Introduction
Art is Easy (and all music sounds the same)The Chan Contemporary Art Space, Darwin10 July – 28 July 2013
Curated by Sarah Pirrie, Lecturer in Visual Arts (Darwin), Suzi Lyon and Henry Smith, Lecturers in Visual Arts (Alice Springs) Art is Easy [and all music sounds the same] is an exhibition of artwork made by Charles Darwin University Visual Arts students, covering the pathways from VET to Postgraduate and Doctorate Visual Arts studies.
The exhibition included the creative disciplines of Printmaking, Drawing, Photography and Painting, including large installations by PHD candidate Glynis Lee, VET Visual Arts student Marie Oliveira, group portrait projects from Visual Arts students from Alice Springs & Darwin.
Students were able to participate in the production and set up of the exhibition and gained valuable insight into the exhibition process.
“It is a colourful and vibrant collection that celebrates Territory creativity and the challenges and rewards the profession provides,” Sarah Pirrie.

What Happens If We Do Nothingink on rice paper
On a three day trip to Dundee last year I found the ocean full of pink jellyfish, far and wide. While beautiful to look at, I couldn’t help wondering “Is this due to climate change?”
Oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface and are our biggest carbon sink. But the more carbon dioxide we emit, the more the ocean absorbs leading to ocean acidification. Acidification of the oceans makes it harder for coral reefs to thrive and for shellfish to form their skeletons, threatening larger species that depend on them for food.
Jellyfish are immune to the effects of acidification; they feed on plankton, fish eggs and larvae leaving less for larger species. Jellyfish clog up fishing nets and ruin the fish caught by stinging them. It is also difficult for fish stocks to re-establish themselves in marine ecosystems, once they have become dominated by jellyfish.
Within six months of the introduction of the federal carbon tax, carbon dioxide emissions in Australia dropped by 8.6% and there has been a 30% increase in the renewal energy sector. It’s a good start but more needs to be done and we can all make a difference.
China emits 25% of the world’s carbon emissions. It is no surprise, considering China produces cheap goods for the rest of the world; so less consumption will result in fewer emissions.
But the real differences are made by Government policies like the carbon tax. As the federal election draws near, it is a good time to put pressure on the politicians about how they plan to cut carbon emissions in this country.
Think green so future generations can enjoy this amazing planet too.

The Chan Contemporary Art Space, Darwin
The Northern Territory Government launched the Chan Contemporary Art Space in September 2010 to showcase the diversity of Territory contemporary visual arts and to provide creative development opportunities for Territory curators, artists and arts organisations.
The Chan Contemporary Art Space exhibition program offers local audiences and visitors to Darwin opportunities to engage with quality contemporary arts practice. The exhibition and public programs contribute to raising the profile of a creative Territory - locally, nationally and internationally.
In 2012 and 2013 the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (formerly 24HR Art) has managed the venue and exhibition program on behalf of the Northern Territory Government.
