Employer BriefingsNO CHARGE to Member Organizations

These Briefi ngs, only two hours in length, focus on best practices in the workplace and offer useful information for HR managers, executives, and business owners.

Engaging Employees With Surveys

Employees will rarely commit to excellence and extra effort unless they know management cares about them and cares about doing what’s best. Employee Opinion Surveys are a great way to show we care – especially if we share the results and collaboratively act on the input we get.

Research shows that when employees say, yes, “my opinions count,” organizations are more profi table and productive. Employees want to be heard and have ideas worth hearing.

Feedback is the way we grow – as individuals and as organizations, but organizations make many mistakes in the design of surveys, the way they collect data and the way they communicate after the survey is completed. If employees perceive their input is not taken seriously, they may become disengaged. A strong and sustained process will lead to engaged employees who are more understanding, dedicated and effective.

This Web-based briefi ng will give you specifi cs on how to handle each stage of the process and how to involve employees so they want to be accountable for improving the things that matter.

Employer Briefings (cont.)Got Talent?

Does your organization focus on employees’ weak-nesses? Have you had a performance review where a few minutes were spent on strengths, and the majority of the time was spent on “developmental areas?”

Is it any wonder that only 12% of the U.S. workforce is fully engaged? What does “fully engaged” look like?

Use their talents every day.1. Consistent levels of high performance.2. Intentional building of supportive relationships.3. Emotionally committed to what they do.4.

Are you fully engaged? How about those who work with you or for you? The key is using your talents every day.

What is a talent? The Gallup organization spent years researching what high performance managers do differently than average performance managers. One of the distinguishing characteristics is they know the difference between knowledge, skills, and talents. A talent cannot be taught. This has huge implications.

Join us for an interactive session where we will look at the concept of talents, and how you and your people can become engaged employees, as well as raise your level of performance.

Training Tip: Hidden Costs of Inadequate TrainingBy Glen Fahs, Training & Organization Development ConsultantCascade Employers Association

If your organization isn’t committed to training, it is just like not being committed to effi ciency, planning, quality, teamwork and communication. They all take time, but productive and profi table organizations fi nd the time.

In determining the 12 statements that employees most frequently agree to in productive and profi table organizations, the Gallup Organization, in a very comprehensive study, reported that two of the 12 were related to training and mentoring:

“My supervisor encourages my development.” ■“In the last year, I have had opportunities to learn and grow.” ■

So why would anyone give training short shrift? When business is slow, managers commonly rationalize, “I love training, but this is just not the time.” Then when business picks up, they may say, “I love training, but we are too busy meeting customer needs to pull people off the fl oor.”

So if managers are so concerned with costs, what are the costs of not training?

Here are a few areas which require formal training:

Orientation/On-Boarding ■ : Well-oriented employees are more confi dent, committed and wise in approaching their jobs. They make fewer mistakes. Instead of focusing just on the isolated, technical parts of their jobs, they consider how what they do affects co-workers, the environment and customers.

Risk Management ■ : If employees are not trained on how to prevent and respond to risks as well as accidents, they realize too late what they should have done. Accidents, harassment, negative confl icts and lawsuits don’t happen randomly. They are integrally related to who we hire, how we treat them and how well they are trained.

Technology ■ : Unless we use technology effectively, great investments are wasted.

Leadership ■ : Most organizations give top priority to developing their professionals and managers – for good reason! Leaders need to be excellent models and coaches. If they aren't, everyone becomes more negative and ineffective. Leaders must collaborate to form a common vision and use excellent communication skills to maximize performance and results.

Those who participate in in-house leadership training series develop more rapport, ambition and confi dence by exploring challenges/issues and setting goals with their peers and top management. They focus on the mission, values and priorities of the whole organization and plan how they will contribute to something meaningful.

Top managers can demonstrate their commitment to learning and collaboration by participating in training themselves.
