Welcome to spring! It has been, as always, an exciting few months at CEAT. The welcoming of new children and

families, new staff members, new initiatives and our fresh new website. We have another exciting few months ahead of us, with several new projects

in the pipeline. We will be working towards expanding our work to other professionals, as we celebrate our

recent certification as an official training provider with the Behaviour

Analyst Certification Board. We are pleased to welcome documentary film-makers William Wroblewski and Cully

Gallagher to Northern Ireland. They have volunteered their services to help us document your stories and our work through the production of a short

film. In addition to a brief but busy filming schedule, we will be kept on our toes as TEAM CEAT runs the 2010

Belfast Marathon in support of the Impact Trust, for whom we are raising

much needed funds. Needless to say, there is much to celebrate, and this edition of the newsletter will be

congratulating our children and staff on recent and well-earned achievements. Thank you again for taking this journey with us, we are bursting with pride and

enthusiasm for the gains your children are making. Please share your stories with us, and we will share them with

others. Kimmy and Mary

It is extremely difficult to condense twelve months in the life of a child recently diagnosed with ASD. But it is

an absolute joy to recount what we deemed “the impossible” for Jude.

Just three months before his second birthday, Jude was diagnosed with ASD.

To date we are unaware of any child as young as Jude getting that diagnosis in Belfast. Although we will never forget

the devastation we experienced at the time, we now thank his lucky stars that we were informed so early. For this, we

must thank my mum for encouraging us to get the ball rolling. As a retired health visitor, she knew long before we were willing to admit that things

weren’t adding up with Jude.

We didn’t waste time. We met Mary and Kimmy at CEAT House and within

a few months our team was assembled to help Jude start this life changing intervention. It was only a matter of

months before we realised that this almost miraculous journey would help unlock something and allow him to begin learning.

Jude went from being a non-verbal, unhappy, unsociable little boy to a vibrant, talkative one who would bite

the hand off you to learn something new.

____________________________

“WE THANK HIS LUCKY STARS THAT WE WERE INFORMED SO EARLY”_____________________________

We know there is no cure for ASD, but it can be treated. Jude now has over 60

words, can count, play with his peers and be his happy little self. Our families, friends and local health

professionals are amazed by his progress.

Jude is a lucky little boy and is thriving. We would like to offer out thanks to:

his grandparents, Carol and Kevin, for their financial support, to Jude’s team of dedicated therapists, Jenny, Doireann

and Leia. We would have never found ABA intervention without Mary and Kimmy and our team supervisor Dr

Vikki Coulter.

on their recent nuptuals. The happy event took place on the 12th of March 2010 in Portadown. The newlyweds

celebrated their honeymoon down under, on a tour of Australia, where they saw the

Syndey Opera House, made friends with reptiles, and escaped the opportunity to sky-

dive due to bad weather. We are pleased to welcome back Evelyn Calvin to our CEAT Team and wish her and John the very

best.

Promoting Communication: The Art of Manding

Thank you to all parents, therapists and professionals who joined us for our Promoting Communication Seminar, which took place on 27th February 2010. We were an energetic bunch who listened hard, worked hard and played hard, trying to find new and creative ways of promoting communication.

“IT WAS GREAT FORUM TO MEET OTHER PARENTS AND TO SHARE IDEAS; WE ENJOYED THE HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES.” - PARENT AND PARTICIPANT

A Day of Fun and GamesAfter diligent work was done getting the computer and projector to communicate with each other, and after rescuing a burning lunch, we got on with an overview of strategies used to teach our children to communicate. But then, seminar participants were put to work generating ideas, role playing and practicing “the art of manding” with the large selection of toys available. Below are just a few of the many ideas generated for making the most of play opportunities:

Play with a PurposeOne team used a car mat and different cars to practice teaching a child to request using colours. This was done by setting up a finish line and teaching request of “go blue car, go red car, go green car!”

Another team used a jungle set and figurines to teach a child to request different animals to do different actions. This was done by having the different animals jump from a tree when the child says “monkey jump, elephant jump, zebra jump!”

Another team used Buckaroo, an old favourite, to teach a child to request different items to place on the horses saddle, by saying “I want . . .” All in all, great ideas. And the possibilities are endless, when you play with a purpose!

Summer is a time of graduation, a celebration of the young people that have completed their programmes. CEAT newsletters often focus on our wee ones so this time we are going to focus on our older children. We can also celebrate the many miles we travel to ensure that children are able to receive the highest quality of consultation. Here at CEAT we consult to families throughout Ireland and Italy. From Ballymena to Cork and Naples to Udine, we are far reaching and delighted to be able to embrace so many families. Over the years we’ve

had a family from Trieste visit us here and spend a day with a Belfast family, and we have hosted therapists from Italy who have travelled to Belfast to gain more experience. This summer we have all be working in the far flung corners of the CEAT map, Evelyn, Julianne and Katherine have been with our wee ones in the far South and we worked with 10 of our Italian families as we traveled from Sicily to Udine via many other cities. The connection between Ireland and Italy was made all the more pertinent this July. One evening whilst walking in Pisa, we

heard some very familiar voices calling us to turn around. To our amazement we saw one of our little ones, Lucia, and her family from Belfast who were finishing off their holiday in Tuscany. It is indeed a small world and another example of how Ireland, Italy and CEAT are an unexpected! but! close community of happy families. We hope that you have all had or are going to have great holidays this year . . . and who knows, you might just bump into

your Consultant.!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 2010 was a great month for our family. Our eldest son Paul, age 12, finished his CEAT programme.

I think back to the days, years ago, when Paul was a small bundle of a boy, tight with anxiety. It was hard to know how to help. Over the years, with CEAT’s guidance, Paul has learnt to manage his own anxiety and it is wonderful to see. As the anxiety fades, the real Paul can shine through.

Paul’s autism has not disappeared. There are still times when life is difficult for him. Autism can still restrict us as a family. Paul can prefer his own company but when the person or topic interests him, he blossoms. Last week when the IT eng ineer called to check the broadband line so he could sign up to Xbox Live, Paul confidently discussed the fault with him and worked his way through the possibility of connection or network glitches. It was not long before he lost me. I left them to it.

Paul has worked hard all his young l i f e a n d d e s e r v e s t o b e acknowledged for that. All through nursery, primary and into secondary school, he came home every day and worke d h i s way thro ugh h i s programme. He was always a quick learner. Indeed, that was why his programme carried on for so long. I’m glad for Paul and I’m glad for our family that he has graduated from his ABA programme. Of course, Paul still has lots to learn but so do all my boys. After all, learning is supposed to be “life-long” now.

As Paul becomes a teenager next month, he is a boy who can be co-operative and flexible. The common interests and sense of humour he shares w ith h is brothers are completely age appropriate. His great passion for new technology, along with his self-taught skills, has opened up an area of expertise for Paul. I can dare to look to the future with the possibility that Paul may be able to use his expertise to create a role for himself and to help others.

The wonderful thing about Paul is that he can now let others see his lovely personality and all his wonderful abilities. Autism no longer hides Paul away. I credit CEAT and ABA with that. I felt truly blessed when I heard Paul was to be one of the first children CEAT would work with in NI. Seven years on, I continue to thank CEAT for coming to NI. I thank Kimmy and Mary for helping Paul to show the world all that is great about him.

Lorraine Donnelly and Damian R o o n ey we re Pau l ’s t r u ste d therapists and then supervisors. Over the years, they both put their hearts an d so u l s i nto Pau l ’s programme. They should feel proud of what they’ve achieved. I will always be indebted to them. I’m happy to have shared my beautiful son with them.

ABA INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

Julianne and Sarah attended the 36th ABAI Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas at the end of May. This conference is “the event” in the ABA calendar giving Behaviour Analysts the opportunity to hear all the latest news in the field, as well as put faces to those famous names we read about in the research. This year it also gave

Julianne and Sarah the opportunity to catch up with an old CEAT friend and colleague – Evelyn Gould.

Attendance at a range of workshops, seminars and panel discussions allowed Sarah and Julianne to gain more knowledge, training and expertise in:

• Normative Levels of social communication• Different functions of eye gaze • Errorless Learning and Programmed Instruction• Comprehension Training• Curriculum Development• Preventing the Development of Problem Behaviour in Preschoolers• Recent Developments in Assessment• Developing Social Skills of Students with ASD served in Inclusive Settings

These are all very pertinent areas in relation to your children, and your Consultant is receiving ‘in house’ training from Sarah and Julianne in these new skills that they learned during these seminars. We recognize how important it is to keep up-to-date with the very latest developments in the research and delivery of programmes that use the principles of ABA to enable your child to learn the functional skills that will change their life and the life of your family.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT SEMINAR

CEAT would like to say a big thank-you to all who attended the Managing Challenging Behaviour sem inar that to ok p lace on Saturday 26th June 2010. The seminar opened with a discussion on what behaviour was and where it came from. This set the precedent for the rest of the day a s t he re we re s o m e g reat comments and questions that definitely got us all thinking right from the beginning.

!

The rest of the seminar looked at how we define behaviour, analyse it and then change the behaviour. This part was packed full of pract ical act iv it ie s inclu d ing watching some very familiar faces throw in g some ente rta i n i n g tantrums. The practical activities and group work allowed individuals to work together and share their knowledge and also ask questions that were pertinent to their own situation. !Once the theory had been learnt and practiced it was time to apply it to the part ic ipants ’ own situations. This gave everyone the tools they needed in order to go home and begin to change those challenging behaviours.

LEADING

EXPERT

On 6th July 2010, CEAT hosted a talk by Dr Alan Zametkin, from the National Institute of mental health, USA. Dr Zametkin shared his exper ience and expertise in relation to current interventions for people with ADD, ADHD, autism and related conditions.

BELFAST MARATHON

On 3rd of May 2010, Team CEAT ran the Belfast Marathon relay. Through their efforts, they raised £500 for the impact trust. Many thanks go out to team members, Kimmy Wroblewski, Sarah Doherty, Vikki Coulter and Joan Mccartan and everyone who sponsored them.

SUMMER SCHEME

Summer 2010 saw the first year of our CEAT Summer C lub. De s igne d fo r teenagers with ASD, it is a great opportunity for all those involved to engage in team/group activities, interact with new people, experience different activities and above all, have lots of summer fun. The Summer Club is running once a week in July and August, and includes activities such as W5 Science Museum, bowling, crazy golf, cinema, go-carting and lots of different sports/adventure activities.
