CECA Yorkshire & Humberside March 2015

CECA has learned that the trial of Payne Pallets

Ltd for corporate manslaughter is due to start on

30th April 2015. Also in the dock is Harry Styles,

MD of Payne, who is charged with Health &

Safety offences.

The prosecution follows an incident in which a

man died at the premises of the local storage

solutions company. The emergency services

were called to Payne’s factory at Malik Road,

Morley at around 2pm on 8th January last year

following reports that a worker had fallen from

the roof of the factory.

The Ambulance Service later released a statement saying that the male, named as 52 year old maintenance operative

Niall Horan, had died of head trauma and internal injuries after falling around 13 metres from the roof of the premises.

Payne Pallets Limited, through CEO Louis Tomlinson, released a statement after the event which read:

“Payne Pallets Limited is today mourning the loss of employee Niall Horan. Niall had been with Payne since 1990 and was

a dedicated and valued member of staff. He was a loving husband to Simone and leaves two children. The company is

devastated by his loss and will work closely with the investigating agencies to establish the full facts surrounding his death.

Until such time as investigations are complete it would be inappropriate for the company to comment further”.

The Health & Safety Executive were informed of the incident and have been jointly investigating the circumstances of Mr

Horan’s death with the Police. It is understood from sources within Payne that Mr Horan was making repairs to the roof of

the company’s factory when he fell. The alarm was immediately raised but nothing could be done to save him.

CECA Yorkshire & Humberside are delighted to be working with Simpson & Marwick and the Yorkshire Safety Centre for Construction to offer this exceptional Mock Trial event.
