In 1989, it was the place I escaped to for the best sunsets. It was the place I visited when I really had a hankering for fresh sea-food. It was the place I went to meet interest-ing people, see artists in action, watch peli-cans, and add unique stories to my portfolio.

And it still is.I started visiting to Cedar Key in 1988 as

a stressed-out college student at UF. I would drive 60 miles west of campus to watch sunsets in the small fishing village. These fieldtrips allowed me to clear my head and relax. And when I started taking photography and reporting courses, the island became a place I frequented to search for stories as I pursued my career in journalism.

The Cedar Key Beacon was a new publica-tion at the time. When I wrote articles about people, places and events in Cedar Key, I often submitted them to the editor to get published for extra credit in my reporting and magazine feature writing classes.

That’s how I began my career in newspa-pers. The first story I submitted for publish-ing in The Beacon was about the UF Marine Lab based on Seahorse Key just off the coast. I was thrilled to see it printed as a double truck spread in the middle of the April 20, 1989 edition and still have a copy of it in my collection all these years later.

In the journal I kept at the time, I described my experience covering research facility. On June 1, 1989, while visiting Seahorse Key, I wrote, “The tide is low, and you can see the bottom of the ocean. The shoreline that’s usually hidden is revealed and vulnerable. perched on the lighthouse and spying into the pelican nests using her binoculars. I had photographed the lighthouse earlier in the day before she took her place.

When I got back to the mainland, I took Henry Coulter, who worked in mainte-nance for the marine lab, up on his offer to fly over the island and get aerial shots.

I’ll never forget see-ing the pelicans nested in every tree top.

The editor at The Beacon asked me if she could use one of my images of the light-house in the masthead of the newspaper. I sent her one and was elated to see it run at

the top of the front page.

The second story I submitted for publish-ing in 1989 was about a retired University of Michigan professor who visited Cedar Key in the winters and painted scenes he saw from the dock on Main Street. Herb Johe was his name, and I bought two of his water color pieces which still adorn my home. A year later, I earned a photography intern-ship at the Ann Arbor News, coincidentally where Mr. Johe lived and he and his wife and I would enjoy Sun-day dinners together during my six months there.

At the end of that internship I took another at the Syra-cuse Papers, in New York, went to grad school at Syracuse University and went

on to work in manage-ment at newspapers in California. After two decades of working in newsrooms, I landed a job as a high school journalism teacher and stayed in the class-room for 13 years.

I returned to Gaines-ville 10 years ago,

taught high school at Newberry and P.K. Yonge then pursued my master’s back at my alma mater. Coverage of the arts and faith and research in community journalism became my focus.

My heart has always been in covering small towns and working at weekly newspapers. So when I got that yearn-ing to reenter the news-room, I was excited to land a position with a company that owns dozens of community newspapers including the Chiefland Citizen and the Cedar Key Beacon.

And I am elated every week, 30 years later, that my lighthouse photo still adorns the masthead of the Cedar Key Beacon.

Every time I see a new edition, it reminds me that I have found my way home.

Cook looked up Henry Coulter who worked at the UF Ma-rine Lab and took her up in a plane to get aerial photos of the island. Cook and Coutler caught up recently after 30 years.

With another full field of 22 teams, the 4th Annual Cedar Key Open was held March 13 at Chiefland Golf and Country Club.

The tournament set a new high in money raised at $6,390. It also set a new low score by a winning team of 55. The beneficiary this year was the Cedar Key School.

This year’s first place was again fiercely contested. The team of Pierce Kelly, with teammates Todd Carter, Stephen Carter and Cam-eron Wintergen, took the championship with an outstanding score of 17-under-par 55.

Last year’s champs, Nature Coast Realty, led by Captain Milt Gillis with Joe Brinkman, Skip-per Henderson, and Al-den Davis, were second with a score of 58. The third-place team, always a close contender, fired a 59 in the scramble match with John Fer-guson, Ken Anderson, Tony Weeks, and Ron Waldron.

The surprise team of the year, finishing fourth with a great score

of 62, was the Big Deck Team consisting of Bryan Skarupski, Buddy Scruggs, George Scruggs, and Stan Zelka.

According to Cap-tain Bryan Skarupski, the team’s rise from the bottom a year ago to contention was a total team effort but was especially aided by the newfound put-ting stroke of George Scruggs.

In its four-year history, the Cedar Key Open has only been won by the Nature Coast Realty Team and the team captained by Pierce Kelly, with each claiming a pair of

wins, setting up 2020 to be an epic show-down.

The tournament or-ganizers wish to thank the area business-es who generously donated a total of 88 prizes to be awarded at the event. A special thanks goes out to the hole sponsors which enabled the dona-tion to the Cedar Key School to be consider-ably higher.

The hole sponsors were: Fugate Law, Mark Braun, Drummond Bank, Big Deck Bar and Grill, Sysco, Cedar Key Market, Dr. Robert Mount, Cooke’s Sea-food, Cedar Key Lion’s

Club, Liam and Madi’s, and Big Bend Chevrolet (three signs).

The team sponsors were Old Fenimore, Nature Coast Realty, Sysco, The Big Deck, and The Eagle’s Club.

The event organ-izers also wish to acknowledge Tim Hart and The Chiefland Country Club and the major sponsors, The Big Deck, and Darlene and Bryan Skarupski.

The event chairmen are Bob Piscura and Joe Chambers.

Cedar Key School was grateful for the sponsors, organizers and participants and the generous donation.

Creating access to nature for people with spe-cial physical needs presents unique challenges, and a recent new partnership with UF is going to create just such opportunities. Thomas Griffin is a Florida businessman who became interested in building boats that would allow disabled people to captain the vessel and enjoy fishing, swimming and wildlife viewing. He connected with local clam farmer Captain Bobby Witt in Cedar Key, and they contacted Corsey Fiberglass Unlimited, a long-time boat builder in Chiefland to explore building a boat that is fully accessible for wheel-chairs and disabled passengers.

As it turns out, the traditional mullet skiff in this region was called a “Bird Dog”. With the mo-tor in the front of the vessel, the boat is perfect for setting gill nets around schools of mullet, the traditional fishery in Florida. As the clam industry developed after the 1994 gill net ban, that same boat design also excelled for working clam leases, and you see them working in our region regularly.

The overall design has big advantages for wheelchair access as well. Working with Thomas and Bobby, Corsey Fiberglass Inc. built a pro-totype boat that is now operational. Thomas started the nonprofit company Bird Dog Boats: http://www.birddogboats.com, and these boats are made to be operated fully from a wheelchair and accessible to all. Thomas and his team have now hosted events throughout Central Florida to provide boating/fishing opportunities for people with special needs, including events in St. Marks through Yankeetown and inland into Winter Park.

On a sunny Saturday in early March, my wife Mendy and I got the chance to take our 14-year old daughter Audrey on this boat with Thomas and his wife Denise. The vessel was captained by

local angler Matt Chatowsky, who uses a wheel-chair. Audrey has a spinal condition and uses a wheelchair herself. Audrey was able to wheel right onto the deck of the boat via a ramp con-structed on the beach at Cedar Key, and the look on her face was pure joy and confidence as she rolled aboard. We had a great day, and Audrey caught fish and watched Matt captain the boat throughout the day.

Thomas Griffin and the Bird Dog Boats crew have now connected with UF Health, Department of Occupational Therapy, and they are exploring how this boat could be integrated into educa-tional programs at Shands in the future. They are also working with the UF College of Journalism and Communications to explore how to promote and expand this effort to reach more people. Given the hard work of Thomas and the partner-ships his team is developing, the results will be improved access to nature in the Nature Coast!

appreciate the drawing ability of Nick Alexiades or Leland as they create amazing images right in front of your eyes.

All along the three-block venue, mixed media artists like Nick Ringel-stetter and painters like alcohol ink painter Julie Tibus will be working. Take the time to ask questions, get to know the artists and their art, and while you’re at it, you just might decide you really can’t even begin “to

Senior Joey Stewart and freshman Mikey Beckham advanced based on their performances at the district competition on March 15 in Key-stone Heights. CKS competed against eight schools who entered a total of 90 lifters during the district meet.

Stewart and Beck-ham will return to Keystone Heights on March 29 to vie for a chance to go on to the state meet in April.

At districts, Stewart, Beckham, and junior Zander Stanley hit personal records and helped set records for future generations of Sharks to aim to beat. The current records are: 129 pound class – Mikey Beckham totaling 235; 169 pound class – Zander Stanley totaling 315; 189 pound class – Joey Stewart totaling 395.
