"Although 4K ultra-high definition video stillhas a two to three year incubation periodahead, it is making its presence known. Global4K TV shipments will grow from just 62,000units last year, to 780,000 in 2013 and 22million units in 2017," Futuresource predicts.

Researchers suggest that the arrival of native4K content will increase consumerawareness and help boost sales "from 2015onwards."

Futuresource also anticipates that mostglobal TV manufacturers will launch a rangeof 4K TVs by the end of this year.

"LCD TV panel manufacturers and premiumTV brands have been looking for the next hottrigger to accelerate flat panel replacement.3D in the home was an attempt to achievethis and it has yet to become the solidsuccess that many had hoped for," saysFuturesource's Head of ConsumerElectronics, Simon Bryant. "4K represents amore natural progression for the industry,

but one that brings its own challenges, notleast the intricacies of producing 4K panelsat high yield rates and the complexities ofdelivering the bandwidth-hungry content."

"Substantial compression improvementsprovided by the HEVC codec will smooth theway for broadcast, adds Simon. Althoughthe real-time encoding required for livetransmission is still embryonic, solutions arebeing trialled and evaluated."

Vassilis Seferidis, Director, EuropeanBusiness Development at SamsungElectronics, supports the Futuresource view, believing that ultra-high definition TV is ontrack to become a mass-market propositionby 2017.

Speaking at the recent FuturesourceEntertainment Summit 2013 in London,Seferidis based his prediction on the take-upof high definition since its introduction. Henoted that major operators had launched HDservices when penetration of HD sets had

reached the order of five per cent.

Our estimation is that ultra-high definitionwill become mainstream by the year 2017.The question is whether operators will waitfor penetration to reach this five per centlevel before introducing channels. There aregood indications that will start earlier aswell. He noted that a number of operatorssuch as Sky Deutschland were alreadyexperimenting with U-HD production, describing it as the natural next step forresolution.

Ultra-high definition is a market thats goingto happen, basically driven by consumerdemand, but also by operators andmanufacturers, who want to differentiatetheir products.

Be sure to check out the latest in 4Kinnovation at this years CEDIA Expo inDenver. Visit www.expo.cedia.net for moreinformation on the event, 4K exhibitors andeducation sessions.

    A 4K FUTURE?

By 2014, Cisco believes traffic from wireless devices will exceed that from wired devices. It is alsopredicted that Wi-Fi and mobile devices will account for 61% of IP traffic by 2016. The newNetworking credential will identify those industry professionals who have proven they possess theknowledge needed to successfully implement a robust network in the home. It is based on the bodyof knowledge found in CEDIA's IP and Networking track of learning.

This Certification is ideally suited to those home technology professionals who install and configureresidential systems; IT professionals who want to enhance their credibility within the consumerelectronics industry; system designers who need to know they are specifying the right design andhardware and control system programmers who are now interacting with the network daily.

Virtually all technologies in the home are becoming part of the home network, says CEDIAsEducation Director, Matt Dodd. To provide network systems that meet increasing speed andreliability requirements, the home technology professional of today and tomorrow must be able todesign, install, configure, and maintain a high quality, complex network. CEDIA's ResidentialNetworking Specialist Credential seeks to raise the standard for home networks across theindustry. Own the network and the home by mastering your knowledge on wireless networks.

    Who are you?

    Mike Beatty

Whats your company and where is itbased

Pulse Marketing is a sales, marketingand AV distribution company based inStansted Mountfitchet, UK. We focus onoffering our dealers the very besttraining and support; from sales andmarketing, technical and on siteassistance, plus so much more

How did you get into the industry?

I started my life in the industry workingfor The Audiofile in Bishops Stortford insales, selling audio brands such as Linn,Naim and Rega to name a few. I quicklyrealised that the AV industry wassomewhere Id like to stay doesntseem like 22 years, but time flies whenyoure having fun!

    Whats your favourite film?

Thats a difficult question, but if I had topick one it would be The ShawshankRedemption. I know its a predictableone, but I just loved it and Im lookingforward to watching it again on the bigcinema at Pulse HQ.

    Whats your favourite album?

Im really enjoying Live Lounge at themoment. I would listen to Phil CollinsFace Value again and again; when I wasa little younger.

Whats your favourite project and why?

It has to be our training facility, as wehave dreamed since the inception of ourcompany that we would one day have afacility like this. Whilst project managingthe build, I can now see just how hardour dealers work to bring together theiramazing projects.

Which custom installation technologydo you consider the most importanttoday and why?

Anamorphic lenses, as its only right thatwe allow clients to watch films withoutblack bars in the way the directorintended. D-BOX has been a revelationand a product that I can see becoming amust have for all cinemas in the future.

How long have you been a CEDIAmember?

We have been a CEDIA member for thebest part of 15 years and have workedclosely with the CEDIA team to helpwherever possible to achieve thenecessary changes for our industry. I amso proud to have been asked to be a partof the Nominating Working Group withBuzz Delano, Larry Pexton from Triadand Jason Sloan from Sonance.

What do your consider your biggestachievement as a CEDIA member?

Opening our training facility and writingand designing two amazing courses:Introduction to Cinema, (which wasnominated for an award for BestTraining Course) and DiSC; which is themost comprehensive and advancedcourse available to help dealers with theprocess of selling cinema systems. Thiscourse is coming soon.

Whats the biggest issue for custominstallation businesses today and howcan they deal with it?

The biggest issue for Custom Installersto deal with is that too many cinemainstallers arent giving their clients whatthey deserve. When the point ofreference for a cinema is a plasma on awall; clients need not be educated aboutwhats possible. Too many dealers arecutting and pasting systems that theyare comfortable installing, just to makesure of the sale.

If there was one thing you could changein the industry what would it be?

Those CEDIA members that have thepassion, enthusiasm, knowledge andexperience in installing dedicatedcinemas would be highlighted asspecialists in their field.

If you werent in the custom installationsector, what would you like to be doingand why?

Id love to train children to realise theirpotential and to teach life skills to themat a young age. I have learnt so muchabout life and business in the last 10years and I wish that someone had givenme some insight when I was youngeror the next Spurs manager would bepretty cool I manage my boys under 11football team and I think Im doing quitewell actually. Surely, that gives meenough qualifications to get me the topjob!

    Too many dealers are cutting

and pasting systems, just to make the sale
