Global 4K TV shipments will grow from just 62,000 units last year, to 780,000 in 2013 and 22 million units in 2017," Futuresource predicts. Researchers suggest that the arrival of native 4K content will increase consumer awareness and help boost sales "from 2015 onwards." Futuresource also anticipates that most global TV manufacturers will launch a range of 4K TVs by the end of this year. "LCD TV panel manufacturers and premium TV brands have been looking for the next hot trigger to accelerate flat panel replacement. 3D in the home was an attempt to achieve this and it has yet to become the solid success that many had hoped for," says Futuresource's Head of Consumer Electronics, Simon Bryant. "4K represents a more natural progression for the industry, but one that brings its own challenges, not least the intricacies of producing 4K panels at high yield rates and the complexities of delivering the bandwidth-hungry content." "Substantial compression improvements provided by the HEVC codec will smooth the way for broadcast,” adds Simon. “Although the real-time encoding required for live transmission is still embryonic, solutions are being trialled and evaluated." Vassilis Seferidis, Director, European Business Development at Samsung Electronics, supports the Futuresource view, believing that ultra-high definition TV is on track to become a mass-market proposition by 2017. Speaking at the recent Futuresource Entertainment Summit 2013 in London, Seferidis based his prediction on the take-up of high definition since its introduction. He noted that major operators had launched HD services when penetration of HD sets had reached the order of five per cent. “Our estimation is that ultra-high definition will become mainstream by the year 2017. The question is whether operators will wait for penetration to reach this five per cent level before introducing channels. There are good indications that will start earlier as well.” He noted that a number of operators such as Sky Deutschland were already experimenting with U-HD production, describing it as “the natural next step” for resolution. “Ultra-high definition is a market that’s going to happen, basically driven by consumer demand, but also by operators and manufacturers, who want to differentiate their products”. The newNetworking credential will identify those industry professionals who have proven they possess theknowledge needed to successfully implement a robust network in the home. 6 COMMUNICATES Your industr y, your voice…news from CEDIA

Who are you?

Mike Beatty

What’s your company and where is itbased

Pulse Marketing is a sales, marketingand AV distribution company based inStansted Mountfitchet, UK. We focus onoffering our dealers the very besttraining and support; from sales andmarketing, technical and on siteassistance, plus so much more…

How did you get into the industry?

I started my life in the industry workingfor The Audiofile in Bishop’s Stortford insales, selling audio brands such as Linn,Naim and Rega to name a few. I quicklyrealised that the AV industry wassomewhere I’d like to stay – doesn’tseem like 22 years, but time flies whenyou’re having fun!

What’s your favourite film?

That’s a difficult question, but if I had topick one it would be The ShawshankRedemption. I know it’s a predictableone, but I just loved it and I’m lookingforward to watching it again on the bigcinema at Pulse HQ.

What’s your favourite album?

I’m really enjoying Live Lounge at themoment. I would listen to Phil CollinsFace Value again and again; when I wasa little younger.

What’s your favourite project and why?

It has to be our training facility, as wehave dreamed since the inception of ourcompany that we would one day have afacility like this. Whilst project managingthe build, I can now see just how hardour dealers work to bring together theiramazing projects.

Which custom installation technologydo you consider the most importanttoday and why?

Anamorphic lenses, as it’s only right thatwe allow clients to watch films withoutblack bars in the way the directorintended. D-BOX has been a revelationand a product that I can see becoming amust have for all cinemas in the future.

How long have you been a CEDIAmember?

We have been a CEDIA member for thebest part of 15 years and have workedclosely with the CEDIA team to helpwherever possible to achieve thenecessary changes for our industry. I amso proud to have been asked to be a partof the Nominating Working Group withBuzz Delano, Larry Pexton from Triadand Jason Sloan from Sonance.

What do your consider your biggestachievement as a CEDIA member?

Opening our training facility and writingand designing two amazing courses:‘Introduction to Cinema’, (which wasnominated for an award for BestTraining Course) and DiSC; which is themost comprehensive and advancedcourse available to help dealers with theprocess of selling cinema systems. Thiscourse is coming soon.

What’s the biggest issue for custominstallation businesses today and howcan they deal with it?

The biggest issue for Custom Installersto deal with is that too many ‘cinemainstallers’ aren’t giving their clients whatthey deserve. When the point ofreference for a cinema is a plasma on awall; clients need not be educated aboutwhat’s possible. Too many dealers arecutting and pasting systems that theyare ‘comfortable’ installing, just to makesure of the sale.

If there was one thing you could changein the industry what would it be?

Those CEDIA members that have thepassion, enthusiasm, knowledge andexperience in installing dedicatedcinemas would be highlighted asspecialists in their field.

If you weren’t in the custom installationsector, what would you like to be doingand why?

I’d love to train children to realise theirpotential and to teach life skills to themat a young age. I have learnt so muchabout life and business in the last 10years and I wish that someone had givenme some insight when I was younger…or the next Spurs manager would bepretty cool – I manage my boy’s under 11football team and I think I’m doing quitewell actually. Surely, that gives meenough qualifications to get me the topjob! ☺

“ ”Too many dealers are cutting and pasting systems, just to

make the sale
