Invitation to the joint CEEBA/IILACE conference in London

Dear Colleague, It is our pleasure to invite you as a law society or bar association chief executive officer to join your friends and colleagues from around the world for a truly unique conference in London from November 1 to 4, 2017. After our gathering in Berlin in 2013, the Chief Executives of European Bar Associations (CEEBA) and the International Insti-tute of Law Association Chief Executives (IILACE) members will meet again together, this year in London, which in 2017 is — for the legal profession — one of the most exciting places worldwide. And we will meet in venues that breathe the history of law. As a CEO you play a vital role in your law society or bar association. There are many common issues for you and your colleagues worldwide, may your organization be a representative or a regulatory one, whether it has mandatory or voluntary membership. The management role, perspective and pressures on the CEO are unique. Only other CEOs truly understand it. In London, we will be 60 colleagues, discussing changes of the legal services market, ethical and deontological as well as manage-ment and governance issues. Our conferences are a great opportunity for professional development. The program committee, under the Association of Danish Law Firm’s Paul Mollerup, has worked hard to prepare this great business program, with a lot of help from The Law Society of England and Wales’ Stephen Denyer. There is no other opportunity worldwide to have an exchange with so many colleagues. For a CEO, whether you have been to an IILACE conference before or are a first time attendee, this is the one conference that you will attend that directly addresses the challenges and issues that you face as a CEO of a law society or bar association. We urge you to register for the conference.

13.30 – 14.45 Session #7: Independence and autonomy of the Bars Sponsored by the Law Society of British Columbia (Canada) The cornerstone of a system based on the Rule of Law is an independent legal profession, which

ensures a fair and impartial judiciary. In the changing global context discussed throughout this year’s conference, how does Government involvement in the profession threaten or enhance the role of lawyers in society? Can we continue to advocate that an independent profession is in the public’s interest if the profession does not step up and lead on important issues such as access to the system and the importance of the Rule of Law? What would it take for Government to do it better than we can do it ourselves? This discussion will look at a few models around the world for law societies and bar associations and what we can learn from each other about these various models.
