PAPG Meeting Cefalo's Restaurant, 428 Washington Ave, Carnegie, PA 15106 Thursday, 22 nd March 2012 PAPG STUDENT NIGHT - Students are invited to attend the March meeting of the Pittsburgh Association of Petroleum Geologists in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. March’s meeting will be devoted to student development and give students the opportunity to meet and have dinner with PAPG members. Each student will have the chance to ask questions about education, industry activity, and opportunities in the Appalachian basin. Please join us for this exciting evening. Ramblings of a Petroleum Geologist on a 30+ Year Career – Thoughts on Career Choices, Professional Societies, Technological Advancements, Social Media and Unconventional Resources Bob Trevail, Exploration Manager, Dallas Energy The dramatic increase in drilling activity in Pennsylvania, West Virginia & Ohio due to the Marcellus & Utica shales has sparked interest in geology and geophysics as career options for many students attending university & college in the Pittsburgh region. While their academic needs are being met through class work, labs and field school, their exposure to the realities of a career in the oil and gas industry is somewhat lacking and many may find themselves wondering “what am I getting myself into”? In the not too distant past, junior geoscientists spent many hours creating hand drawn contour maps and pouring over paper seismic sections trying to arrive at a valid interpretation of the subsurface. The current fast pace of change in technological advancements in exploration & development often leaves very little time for new recruits to absorb the knowledge of their more experienced colleagues. In an attempt to partially remedy this situation, PAPG sent invitations to students and an advisor from earth science departments in the region inviting them to attend our March 22 nd meeting to have dinner and network with PAPG members. The students and advisor will receive a free dinner provided by PAPG. As a local industry geoscientist and PAPG member, we encourage you to attend the meeting, mingle with the students and share your valuable work experience with them and offer constructive advice, possibly along the lines of “if I only knew then what I know now”, that students can consider & implement as they begin their careers in the oil & gas industry. There is also a possibility you will encounter someone who will become a future valuable employee or colleague. Current PAPG President Bob Trevail will present his talk “Ramblings of a Petroleum Geologist on a 30+ Year Career – Thoughts on Career Choices, Professional Societies, Technological Advancements, Social Media and Unconventional Resources” a look back on changes in the oil and gas industry, how work gets accomplished, the value of networking & joining professional societies and the possibilities & pitfalls of social media. Although targeted at students, most PAPG members should be able to relate to similar experiences in their careers. About the speaker Bob Trevail is Dallas Energy’s Exploration Manager based in Freedom, PA. He is an American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Certified Petroleum Geologist with over 30 years of experience in a variety of roles in the oil and gas industry including well-site geologist, staff geologist, geological consultant, and exploration manager. Although most of his work experience has been with conventional carbonate and sandstone reservoirs including Niagaran pinnacle reefs, Trenton-Black River hydrothermal dolomites, and Upper Devonian sandstones, recent activity in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays in the Appalachian basin sparked an interest in more unconventional plays. He has a Bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Western Ontario. Bob is the current Pittsburgh Association of Petroleum Geologists (PAPG) President as well as its delegate to the House of Delegates of the AAPG. He serves as the AAPG Energy Minerals Division Eastern Section Councilor. He served as Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President and President of the Eastern Section of AAPG during the early 1990s and also served as 1st Vice President and President of the Ontario Petroleum Institute.

WHAT IS THE PAPG? PAPG is a non-profit organization founded in 1984 to provide a forum for Petroleum Geologists in the Pittsburgh Area to meet socially and discuss technical topics relative to the exploration and development of reserves in the Northern and Central Appalachian Basin. PAPG is an affiliated association with AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) and has representation in the House of Delegates. Educational opportunities are provided via field trips, seminars and AAPG Sectional meetings, sponsored solely by PAPG or in conjunction with the PTTC (Petroleum Technology Transfer Council), PGS (Pittsburgh Geologic Society) and SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers). Although PAPG is predominately a geologic organization, numerous industry professionals including geophysicists, engineers, lawyers and landmen are among PAPG’s members and find the interaction at meetings and educational opportunities beneficial to their professions. PAPG also encourages student membership and participation. Meetings are typically held monthly from September through May in locations within 50 miles of downtown Pittsburgh. From time to time, meetings are held in conjunction with SPE and PGS.
