CEHD Insider - September 2015 College, Alumni, Student News, and Special Events CEHD News Howell and Teachers at Westport Middle Design New Orientation Penny Howell, Associate Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, worked with teachers at Westport Middle School to design and coordinate an orientation program for sixth graders who were making the transition to middle school. The program helped ease students’ fears and concerns when going from elementary to middle school. Westport Middle School is a Signature Partnership school and a site for the CEHD’s clinical model of teacher preparation. The Courier Journal featured an article about the orientation on August 7, 2015 Dumas Article Featured in AACTE Publication Tia Dumas, Postdoctoral Fellow and Project Manager in the Nystrand Center, was recently featured as a Mentor of the Month and invited to submit an article in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Holmes Scholars newsletter, The Scholar’s Report. The publication is designed to foster mentoring relationships between the National Association of Holmes Scholars Alumni (NAHA) and Holmes Scholars members. The journal is published by the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts. The article titled, “An Analysis of Text Complexity in Young Adult Literature,” was guided by Flaherty’s honors thesis project that Dr. Chisholm mentored during her senior year at the CEHD. Gross Receives Prestigious NASFAA Award Jacob Gross, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, was presented the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrator’s (NASFAA) Golden Quill Award during an award ceremony that was held at the organization’s annual conference. This award is given to scholars each year based on their contributions to literature on student financial aid. Dr. Gross is the most junior faculty member to ever receive this award and joins top scholars who have been previously honored by NASFAA. In addition, Dr. Gross recently attended a national meeting that included academics from across the country where he moderated a session with Jamienne Studley, the Deputy Under Secretary of Education, on the Obama Administration’s college rating system. Bay-Williams Selected for KCAS Challenge/Review Team Jenny Bay-Williams, Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, and Ryan Davis, CEHD doctoral student in the curriculum and instruction program, were selected to participate on the Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS) Challenge for Mathematics Review/Revision Team. The team will synthesize feedback from the past year to propose revisions that have merit for improving the overall quality of mathematics standards and outcomes for students. Sun Publishes Book Jeffrey Sun, Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, and his co-editor, Dr. Susan Bon of the University of South Carolina, published a book, Law & Educational Inequality: Removing Barriers to Educational Opportunities, which examines how laws have eased the effects of educational inequality within the P20 educational setting. Balkin and Washington to Represent CEHD at GEAR UPRichard Balkin, Professor and Program Coordinator for Counselor Education (Ph.D.) and School Counseling, and Ahmad Washington, Assistant Professor, both with the Department of Counseling and Human Development, will represent the CEHD at the first Kentucky School Counseling and Advising Institute, which will be hosted by GEAR UP Kentucky and the Reach Higher Initiative. The two-day conference will explore successful practice, evaluation, and relevant research to create dynamic school counseling programs that engage the whole school community to ensure students are prepared for college success.

Norton-Meier Presents at ABI ConferenceLori Norton-Meier, Professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, was a presenter at the second International Argument-Based Inquiry (ABI) Conference, which was held in Spokane, WA. The CEHD also sponsored one of the meals served

at the conference. The conference explores benefits of argument-based inquiry in science, math, and language art classrooms. Learn more about ABI, http://abic.education.wsu.edu/.

Terson de Paleville and HSS Students Publish Article Daniela Terson de Paleville, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, and CEHD exercise science students, John P. McCulloch Michael A. Kloby, and Matthew D. Love, were co-athors on an article titled, “Prediction of maximal oxygen consumption

from rating of perceived exertion (RPE) using a modified total-body recumbent stepper.” The article will appear in an upcoming issue of the International Journal of Exercise Science. This is the first time the students have published an article.In addition, Dr. Terson de Paleville recently published an article in Respiratory Physiology and Neurobiology. The article is titled, “Compensatory muscle activation during forced respiratory tasks in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury.” Douglas Lorenz, Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at UofL, was a co-author on both articles.

Jean-Marie Publishes BookGaetane Jean-Marie, Professor and Department Chair for Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, and co-editors, Steve Sider, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Charlene Desir, Nova Southeastern University, published a new book titled, Comparative International Perspectives on

Education and Social Change in Developing Countries and Indigenous Peoples in Developed Countries. The book illuminates research and collaborative initiatives between authors and local leaders in developing countries’ and indigenous peoples in developed countries’ efforts to solve the complexity of social inequities through educational access and quality learning.

Bernstein and SPAD Students Attend National ConferenceGary Bernstein, Instructor and Sports Administration (SPAD) Internship Director, along with SPAD students Christina Franck, Alan Hudelson, Chiny Asher, Emily Russ, Jeffery Levine, Gabi Biderharn, Andrea Marie, Lauren Herich, Mikaela Matifis, attended the Doha GOALS conference. GOALS, the Gathering of All Leaders in Sport, brings together corporations, policy makers, student ambassadors, athletes, and more to discuss how sport can act as an agent of social change and economic progress. The students will develop and implement a special project during this school year for the local community based on what they learned at GOALS.

CEHD Adjunct Instructor a Featured Artist at Kazakhstan EventCarrie Neumayer, an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, was selected to be a featured artist in Kazakhstan’s ArtBat Festival. The month-long event began on August 27th and draws artists and art lovers from around the world. Alumni NewsRYANNE NOEL LUTTRELL, B.S. in Organizational Leadership and Learning Program, will serve as the new Human Simulations Instructional Specialist and Lab Coordinator for the Allied Health Program at Jefferson Technical Community College in Louisville, KY.

A study by JUDI VANDERHAAR, Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development, and MARCO MUNOZ, Ed.D. in Educational Administration, and retired professor Dr. Joseph Petrosko, was cited in a Courier Journal article about JCPS’s alternative schools. Students in the cohort, “Block ’17 EdD,” and the ELFH 710 Doctoral Seminar are featured in a video that centers on developing leadership preparation curriculum that supports leaders serving diverse learners. HSS Student Receives First Petrino Family ScholarshipRA’VONTE HARBIN is the first recipient of the Cardinal Covenant Petrino Family Foundation Scholarship. CEHD Student Named CHRO of the YearHRO Today Magazine selected KAWEL LAUBACH, a Graduate Student in the CEHD M.S. in Human Resources and Organizational Development Program (MSHROD), as the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) of the Year.
