ECOHEAT™ direct-contact water heaters heat water on-demand, up to 185°F, for use in cold-weather concrete production. With available flow rates up to 1,200 gallons per minute, you don’t have to worry about having hot water when you need it. Moreover, by heating water as it is needed, you don’t waste the added fuel expense of maintaining the temperature of water stored in large water tanks.

Economically wise. Ecologically responsible.

Economically Wise. Because it is an instantaneous heater, you could see your gas bill drop immediately. It only burns the amount of fuel it needs to give you only the amount of hot water you need — when you need it.

Ecologically Responsible. Due to the heater’s incredibly high efficiency, your operation can become more energy efficient and ecologically progressive by lowering emissions.

Optional Ultra-Low NOx burners take that low carbon footprint to the extreme, with emissions less than 9 ppm.

Consistent. Proven. Consistent water temperatures mean consistent concrete temperatures and production without dips and dives. These heaters are factory-tested before shipment. The design is proven, time-tested and production-tested at many ready-mix companies.

Reliable. Solid. As one plant operator commented: “All I have ever done is turn it on when I come in in the morning, and turn it off when I leave at night.” It’s solidly built to higher standards than other heaters you’ve seen, and it’s field-proven to give you fast, consistent results.

Easy operation. The full-modulation burner fires into the combustion chamber, while incoming water is sprayed downward from the top of the heater. This water cascades downward through stainless steel packing. The packing temporarily slows the flow of water, and provides plenty of surface area for heat transfer.

Hot burner gases flow upward from the combustion chamber, through the stainless steel packing. Falling water is heated by direct contact with the hot burner gases. Hot water then falls into the collection area below, where it accumulates momentarily before use.

The CEI ECOHEAT water heater was designed to have maximum combustion efficiency, with the most economic fuel consumption and cleanest emissions possible. Several factors contribute to the heater’s high efficiency, including: Use of a fully-modulating, natural-gas fired burner, design of the combustion chamber, and flow pattern of the burner exhaust gases.

The burner’s fire rate is automatically adjusted to all points between high fire and low fire as needed, rather than merely one or the other. This avoids unnecessary consumption of fuel, temperature overshooting, and underperformance of the heater.

The ECOHEAT heater model most suited for your application depends on water flow rate and temperature rise needed. From the table above, pick the temperature rise approximately the same as the temperature rise you need. In the column below the temperature rise you picked, find a flow rate equal to or greater than the flow rate you need. The heater model most suitable for that temperature rise is shown on the same line. The cfh (cubic feet per hour) values shown for natural gas assume an HHV (high heating value) of 1030 Btu/cubic foot. The gph (gallons per hour) values shown for propane assume an HHV of 91,000 Btu/gallon. *When the heater must be certified for food service, add the letter F to its model designation, for example HHW-60F.

ECOHEAT Direct-Contact Water Heater

Ultra Low-NOx Burners are available for areas with extremely strict emission regulations, such as the State of California. Fuel options include natural gas and propane. These burners produce less than 9 ppm when fired on natural gas, and less than 12 ppm on propane.

Combustion Chamber Design. During the research & development phase of designing this heater, engineers determined that combustion efficiency was improved by extending the combustion chamber in comparison to other designs.

The reason is simple: The heater is designed to heat water with a fired burner. Water extinguishes flame. Therefore, extending the combustion chamber and shielding the flame from water impingement allows more space for complete fuel combustion. Complete combustion yields cleaner emissions.

Some heaters on the market fire the flame directly into the falling water. While this does effectively heat the water, the falling water also prevents complete fuel combustion by extinguishing a percentage of the flame. Such heaters are not only wasting fuel, they’re also sending unburned

fuel emissions and higher carbon monoxide emissions right out the exhaust stack.

Exhaust Gas Flow. In addition to an extended firing chamber, the ECOHEAT also features an internal shield that further protects the flame. This allows for full combustion of the fuel. Burner gases swirl upward and around the shield, heating the falling water as it cascades downward through the stainless steel packing. The heated water falls around the shield and into the collection basin, avoiding impingement with the flame.

Stainless Steel Structural Components, piping and internal parts ensure durability and long service life.

A hinged door on the upper section of the heater provides for inspection and maintenance of the stainless steel packing.

UL-rated, NEMA 4 Control Panel is the nerve center of the heater’s safety systems and PLC controls. Compliance to UL standards not only assures you of the quality of the electrical system, it also puts your insurance company at ease, potentially bringing you lower premiums. The NEMA 4 enclosure provides watertight protection against splashing water, hose-directed water, rain, sleet, snow, ice, dirt, and windblown dust.

Panels that meet CSA specifications, and other NEMA standard enclosures are available optionally.

ECOHEAT Direct-Contact Water Heater

Safety Features integrated into ECOHEAT water heaters provide for safe, unattended operation. Burner controls include a Fireye Flame Monitor to provide microprocessor-based burner management. This ensures that all safety limits are met before the burner is fired.

Low-level switches prevent the burner from firing unless water is flowing through the heater. This prevents the walls of the heater from being damaged by overheating. High-level switches shut off the burner and incoming water flow.

Tank Options. The ECOHEAT water heater was designed to heat water so rapidly that a heated water storage tank would be unnecessary. Indeed, this is the most energy-efficient method of using a direct-contact water heater in a production environment.

Some operations, however, prefer to maintain a small heated water tank as a back-up, or surge tank. In these cases, an ECOHEAT water heater can easily be adapted to heat and circulate water in a separate tank.

Recirculation Options. ECOHEAT water heaters maintain a small amount of water in the collection basin at the bottom of the heater. This helps to provide instant response when hot water is needed. After a period of inactivity, this water will cool down.

Bypass Options. For those times when the incoming mix water is already at usable temperature, CEI offers a bypass package that allows the plant to bypass the water heater altogether.
