Unlike the last issue I’m not going to tell you a bunch o a

about oriental countries but you’ve probably guessed by no

that’s what this issue is about. Many i not all artists have som

appreciation o eastern cultures and are somewhat inluenc

by it since it’s airly dierent rom western cultures. Man

and Anime have a dierent style rom western cartoons, n

only in their art style but also with their story lines. Traditioand modern architecture also vary greatly in both cultures, as well as their legends, myths a

ways o combat.

This issue o Ceiga explores and appreciates some o these dierences, and it even contains t

interpretation o eastern culture by western artists.

You my notice that this issue is a lot more like a magazine in terms o containing readab

articles instead o just pictures. We have a review, and an interview, and an article rom

external author. I would really like to know i you preer this inclusion o articles, or i y

This is probably not the type o im age you were expecting

to see on the ront cover o an oriental issue, but i

you’ve been a an o Cegia you will know by now that we always do things di erently.

It would have been normal to see a traditional oriental

picture o let’s say a woman, a monk, or a temple. But

Nelson Wei’s ‘Queen of Disco pt.7 ’ works perectly

or the ront cover as it shows o a more modern

oriental society. Bright luminous colours show o the

constantly innovative technology emerging rom the east, as well as the more youthul

manga and party scene.

The Madonna ans amongst you will notice the clothes the main character is wearing

are similar to what she wears when she perorms. Wei based this image on Madonna’s

‘The Conessions tour 2006’ which to a certain extent symbolises western inluences

in parts o the east.

t hey say we should ‘never judge a book by its cover’, but I’m

pretty sure we all do (even i we don’t want to admit it), so

I’ll do something dierent and talk a little bit about the cover

art. The cover image o the book, ‘Fish Man’ by Fabricio

Moraes shows an anthropomorphic sh armed with a water

pistol, standing knee deep in swamp water, this angry looking

character is wearing what seems to be a yellow spacesuit; and

the whole image is surrounded by green leaess trees and a

subtle og. Arguably this ‘sh man’ is not the best image in

the whole book, nevertheless it sets a good tone or the book

and presents the viewer with a good example o the quali ty o

work to be expected.

The design and layout is akin to a proessional photography

book, presented in a simple and clean way. No overlap in text and images, and

there are no cursive designs to be seen, (apart rom in some o the images o

course). The general colour scheme is dark grey and white which makes the book

easy on the eyes and allows the colours o the artwork to stand out more, making

the thumbnails o the artists ace black and white added a nice touch o class.

About The Book

‘Digital Art Masters Volume 6’ contains the work o 50 talented artists both 2D

and 3D with each explaining the various tips and tricks they used to create their

artwork. Each artist has a air bit to say about their work and nearly all o them

have progression images o their work, almost as i they knew their work was

going to be eatured and took screenshots o it whilst it was in development. I

was impressed with the quality o English used by each artist in the text even

though English isn’t the rst language o some o the artists. Nevertheless,

each artist gave a good account o their work and shared important pieces o

inormation about their workow.

The majority o the artists used 3DS Max or modelling, Vray or r

Zbrush or sculpting, whilst explaining their work process they te

detail and use very specic terms and processes with these sofware,

no experience with these then you might not completely underst

artist is talking about. For example, a ew arti sts mentioned adaptive

and transpose in Zbrush which was like Portuguese to me being a

and Mudbox user. Photoshop is another popular program in the

all digital artists should know how to use. What surprised me w

using Photoshop was that a lot o them used older versions, illustrato

used Photoshop CS or his image even though CS5 had been releas

artists used the deault Photoshop brushes or painting as supposed

downloading custom brushes.

We all know that 2D and 3D both dierent mediums used to create

the workow used by both kinds o artists to create their art is some

o the 3D artist use 2D or composition and ofen incorporated 2D

aid the look o the image. Emphasis on research was brought up by

as well as the importance o incorporating a background story and s

into an image. Many artists added smaller details to their images t

story that went with the image, details which would not be not

looking at the image more than once.

In Conclusion

I wish I could elaborate on the great tips and tricks given by the arti

drastically improve the quality o someone’s work, but i I did there

need or you to get this great book.

My thanks go to 3DTotal or putting together such a great book

wasn’t easy. I'll be looking orward to the next one.

I must admit, I’ve never really been a fan of purchasing gallery books to look at images I can find

on the Internet for free, however ‘Digital Art Masters Volume 6’ is definitely, simply not your

typical everyday gallery book. The great selection of both 2D and 3D artwork featured in the book,

insightful tips given by the many talented artists, and the great layout of the design and the layout

of the book itself are just a few things that justify its price tag and make it a valuable tool that every

digital artist should own.

For this interview we talk to Garreth Gaydon, recruitment manager at Escape Studios an Stein (who answered the last question) composting tutor also from Escape.

1. What soware do most Visual Eects studios preer to use or 3D

modelling and why?

Te most commonly used package is Autodesks Maya. It’s also what we teach

our students to use at Escape. It’s a very versatile package that is relatively easy

to use and is also competitively priced.

2.What are the important do’s and don’ts or a showreel in general?

Keep it relevant, research the skills that are required in an entry level position

and make sure you show these skills in your reel. Play to your strength, always

lead with your best piece o work. Breakdown and annotate your work. Do this

in the 2nd hal o your reel. Keep it original, i.e. don’t copy other peoples work.

Keep it simple; don’t attempt overly complex or ambitious work. Don’t show

work in progress or include sub-standard work. Tis is your “show” reel make

sure it is doing you justice! Don’t make it too long, no longer than 2 minutes

including breakdowns.

3. Is it best to become an expert in one area o visual ee

tracking). Or is it better to study a bit o everything?

We teach all our students a range o skills that are aimed at gettin

in the industry but we make sure that they are especially procien

level skills that employers are looking or. For example a lot o our V

enter the industry as trackers and a lot o our Compositing studen

careers as Roto Artists. So while it is important to show a range

must remember to research the specic skills that are going to get

oot on the ladder.

Artists tend to specialise in areas later on in their careers so while

always have one eye on where you eventually want to be it is a go

open minded about the roles you apply or at the start o your care

4.What job positions usually have the most vacancies and

best route to take to get started?

On the 3D side o things a lot o Artists start out as trackers. In Compositing it

is Rotoscoping. Tese are both good entry level roles and a lot o artists careers

start here.

5. Once starting at a company as a runner, how long does it take on

average to move up and begin specialised work on projects?

Tis entirely depends on the company you are working or. We have heard some

horror stories o people working or years as a runner and still not getting any

hands on experience. However most studios don’t tend to abuse this system and

see it as a great opportunity to integrate Juniors into the company. On average I

would say 6 months is roughly what you should expect.

6. Can you recommend any books or learning material or those who

have recently made a decision to get a career in visual eects?

One o the great things about working in 3d sofware is that while we

ofen strive to produce realistic results or stylistic results based on the

real world, we are not restricted to the properties o the physical world

as we know it. Depending on the goal or your image, you can modiy

your scene away rom what is physically correct to create a visually

more appealing result.

I’ve created a scene based on Pixar’s Wall-E to showcase a ew dierent

modications I used to improve the image via light linking. The

character Eva is the main subject o the render. She is being tracked

down the corridor by security bots.

The top image has all o the illumination sources, shadow sources and reections coming rom the same

area or each light source. In the bottom image, I’ve made a ew improvements while still trying to attain

believability in the image.

The changes are as ollows,

•Main red warning light – This light was duplicated and light linked so that one version of the light aects

the character while the original aects the rest o the scene. Once the second duplicate o the light was

light linked to Eva, it was moved to the right and closer to the ground. Sideward to attain more o a side

lighting on Eva to bring out the roundness o the character, and downwards to take some o the red out o

the bowl underneath Eva’s head on the body area. The original light was lef in the initial position as the

warning light object in order to keep realistic lighting characteristics in the rest o the scene.

•Security robot red warning lights – These lights were placed to give a tension ambiance toward the rear

o the corridor with one robot placed so that the warning lights project the shadows o the other security

robots on the wall. To improve the look I moved the lights that are projecting the shadows away to the

right side o the security robot (o-screen) and towards the ground. The lights were moved to the side to

reposition the shadows slightly behind Eva to avoid clutter in the scene and downwards to increase the size

o the security bot shadows on the wall which adds a touch o drama to the scene.
