Celebrate Art

On 18 February, the school ushered in the Year of the Goat with lots of festivities and cheer. It provided a platform for pupils to understand the culture of another race, promote racial harmony and spread festive joy to the senior citizens. Differentiated classroom activities at each level enabled pupils to appreciate the origins of the Lunar New Year. That was followed by a rousing concert performed by our very own Guzheng ensemble, Wushu members, and Malay dance troupe. The highlight of the concert was the Lion Dance. Indeed, the audience went wild with excitement upon hearing the rousing drumbeats ushering in the lions. To end off a fantastic day, all the pupils, staff and invited guests had a Lo Hei session at the canteen. It was indeed a vibrant and enjoyable event. May the Year of the Goat bring us happiness, good health and good fortune!

On 30 January, the P6 pupils went on a heritage tour to Chinatown. The objectives of the tour were to discover and experience the Chinese heritage of Singapore, appreciate the harmony that exists between the different ethnic groups in Singapore and celebrate the unique diversity (ethnic composition) that Singapore has. The pupils learnt about the history of Chinatown and how it has evolved since 1821.

As part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, our P4 pupils participated in a meaningful Values-in-Action Project, in collaboration with the Pasir Ris West Community Centre. Called Project Festive, it was carried out on 31st Jan 2015 and is part of the school’s spiral approach in VIA. Accompanied by students from Meridien JC, our pupils visited the blocks of fl ats near the school and presented mandarin oranges and greeting cards to the residents. They also distributed healthy eating messages which they had designed to promote healthy eating during the festive season. Our pupils enjoyed the activity and applied what they had learnt in class, such as the social etiquettes whilst visiting and Chinese New Year greetings in Mandarin.

In line with the school’s philosophy of “Every Child Matters”, it is important to create a caring and conducive learning class environment. Our differentiated Orientation Programme for all P1-P6 pupils was conducted to prepare pupils for the new academic year. Many activities were conducted by the Form, Co-Form and Mother Tongue teachers to provide teacher-pupil bonding opportunities and create positive teacher-pupil relationships. Pupils bonded with their teachers through activities such as ice-breakers and team building activities. As a class, pupils and teachers decided on a classroom culture and theme, as well as created shared values banners. These activities were part of their classroom decoration to represent their class identity. Pupils also formed their class committees, decided on class rules and routines so as to ensure smooth daily operations in the class. The Lifeskills programme was differentiated for all levels. With the strong support from our Parent Support Group (PSG), our pupils learnt

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies through level programmes such as Ready for School, Skills@Home and Dining Etiquette, just to name a few. Our P1 pupils were buddied with their seniors in P5 who taught them how to queue up for and purchase food during recess. It was indeed heart-warming to see the care and concern the seniors showered upon their juniors. The highlight for the P1s was the Telematch cum Campfi re where our P1 pupils cheered, sang and participated enthusiastically in team games. Our supportive P1 parents also participated in the teacher-parent game during the telematch. The Orientation Programme not only achieved its objectives but also succeeded in bringing about a synergistic collaboration between the school and our PSG to provide a meaningful and impactful learning opportunity for our pupils.

Total Defence Day was commemorated this year with an array of activities. Kicking off the commemoration was an assembly quiz featuring several invited “stars” like Jojo Joget, PCK and Leticia! Sporting teachers dressed up as the stars to talk about each aspect of Total Defence and conducted quizzes on their segments. Pupils were mesmerised by their favourite TV “stars” on the stage!

A 2-day CCA Camp Excellence was organised for the school team players and members from the various CCAs, namely, Volleyball, Hockey, Netball, Football, Wushu and Art and Craft Club on 15th and 16th January. Organised as part of team building to prepare the pupils for their yearly National Inter-School competitions as well as other competitions, the camp consisted of intensive training sessions and a motivational programme by the CCA coaches and teachers-in-charge. Apart from the

intensive training, pupils thoroughly enjoyed team building activities such as Tchoukball and bonding sessions with their CCA teachers. Pupils were brought on a journey of self-discovery and learning, where they discovered their truest best selves and at the same time, inspired them towards a common goal. Pupils had a whale of a time making new friends and interacting with one another. The camp came to a closure with group photographs and a sharing session for parents.

During recess, an equally exciting Amazing Race was organised. Pupils were encouraged to participate in the race with their friends of different races and age groups, where they had to answer questions about Singapore. Pupils also wrote down their pledges for Singapore on red or white cards. These cards were then pieced together to form the

Singapore fl ag. Colourful prints of their palms were used as the border for the fl ag, signifying unitedness and the strength of the nation. Classroom activities were also carried out during the Social Studies lessons, each with the objective of reminding our pupils that Singapore is defensible and we must ourselves defend Singapore.

A proud moment.A proud moment.

Let us be inspired by – SG50It is with great pride and joy that we celebrate our nation’s 50th birthday this year. SG50 is a milestone in our history and it would not have been possible to come thus far without the leadership, dedication and passion of our founding fathers.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew – The Epitome of ResilienceHailed as the man behind Singapore’s success, Mr Lee was our nation’s fi rst and longest-serving prime minister. His achievements are immeasurable. Mr Lee wanted to transform Singapore into a clean & green city. In 1959, he fi rst led a mass drive to clean our nation. After the launch of the Annual Tree Planting Day on November 1971, Mr Lee role modelled by using the hoe and planting saplings on numerous occasions. He launched many campaigns to educate the people on keeping Singapore clean and green. Today, his efforts have earned us the name, ‘The Garden City.’

Corps Singapore [YCS] and an active member of the PVPS Alumni. In addition, I am a workshop trainer at The Fireant LLP. When I was in secondary school, I was a student councillor and the vice chairman of the Media Club. These roles helped me to build skills in leadership, working with people who have different personalities and identifying my own working style, problem solving and confi dence. To me, attending school is not just about the academics, it is about one’s development into a well-rounded individual. Hence, I was also actively involved in community services such as newspaper collection and Boys’ Town Flag Day.

When I joined ITE, the course offered, though not really my choice, is once which I have come to enjoy. I believe that if I work hard, I will do well. With the help of my caring and committed teachers at ITE, I emerged in the the top 10% in my course and that made my parents and teachers very proud. I also strongly believe in volunteering as I feel happy after helping someone and seeing the smiles on their faces. A simple ‘Thank You’ is suffi cient to make my day! I fi nd that volunteering has opened my eyes to many things that I cannot learn from books. Currently, I am in the Youth Corps Singapore, a movement initiated by PM Lee during his National Day Rally in 2013. My team is presently working on a project, together with Trybe Ltd, a non-profi t organisation, to plan activities for psychiatric patients and teach these patients some skills to create craftworks so as to generate income for them. I am also happy to serve in the PVPS Alumni and hope more of you can join the Alumni family.
