Celebrating 125 Years of

Potatoes, Ponies, and Pennies!Since day one in 1893 through today, the foundation of Children’s Home Society (CHS) has been built on the grassroots support of individuals, children and families, businesses, churches, schools, service clubs, and organizations.

In the early days of CHS, people answered the pleas of co-founder William Sherrard who called out CHS’ needs in his 4-page monthly newspaper The Children’s Friend.

“We have arranged with our grocer to store and deliver potatoes as needed. We can also use winter vegetables.”

“We are greatly in need of a driving horse. Who will give us one?”

“We are anxious to hear that some of our farmer friends have left wheat at the mills or elevators, as flour is running low.”

In September of 1896, Mr. Sherrard launched the idea of a “Rescue Army.” He encouraged “…all the boys and girls who are glad they have a happy home…” to join this army.

The enlistment fee was $1 to be part of a 50-member company of children. Together, their $50 paid the costs for finding one child a good home.

Children all across the state sent in their dollars along with stories about how they raised it (see inset at left).

This is but one example of thousands of fundraising projects and events that have been held over CHS’ history. These efforts, along with heart offerings of pennies, dollars, checks, and estate gifts have sustained the 125-year mission of CHS.

It is with deep gratitude for each and every donor and gift that this publication is dedicated.

– THE CHILDREN’S FRIENDFall 1963

For the past 13 Christmases, Novak Sanitary Services of Sioux Falls has given a bike to every child at Sioux Falls Children’s Home (SFCH) and Children’s Inn who needs one.

In 2008, Novak challenged their friends in Rapid City at Kieffer Sanitation to do the same for the kids at Black Hills Children’s Home. Long story short, they did—and have also been a “bike Santa” ever since!

There is another familiar player on the bike scene at SFCH. Every spring, members of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Sioux Falls spend an evening inflating tires, tightening chains, adjusting pedals, and whatever else needs to be done to ready bikes for summer riding!

A number of service clubs, church groups, and business employee groups have filled New Beginnings baskets for clients who have been served in shelter by Children’s Inn. Many women who have left abusive situations and are starting a new life free from violence may find it

expensive to set up a new household for themselves and their children.

New Beginnings baskets are laundry containers filled with basic household items such as cleaning supplies, towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, first aid supplies, paper products, and more. What a feeling to know how much people care!

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader chose Children’s Inn in 2013 and in 2017 to benefit from their special holiday promotion “Lend-a-Hand.” With stories devoted to educating the public about the work of Children’s Inn, readers were encouraged to send a gift of support. This is something for home owners to dream about—especially homeowners whose houses may need painting.

Nearly 100 members of Sioux Falls Painters’ Local No. 857 swarmed over the home of Elmer Garness, superintendent of the South Dakota Children’s Home, 1227 East Tenth Street yesterday afternoon to completely paint the three-story, 28x30-foot house in 11 minutes and 40 seconds.

It was a feature of the Cosmopolitan Club’s clean-up week program. Preliminary arrangements for the painters were made by local painting contractors and decorators. All materials and work was donated.

CHS friends Rob and Debbie Mudge of Rapid City share their love of boating and water sports with kids from both Black Hills Children’s Home (BHCH) and Sioux Falls Children’s Home (SFCH). BHCH kids ride the waves at Sheridan Lake.

Jim Bruns and a host of volunteers welcome SFCH kids to enjoy the waters of Catfish Bay, and also provide complimentary tickets to attend the evening’s “Greatest Show on H2O!”
