ANNUAL REPORT | july 1, 2012 - june 30, 2013
ConTEnTsfor the past twenty
years, the Hope Center’s
mission has been to care
for homeless and at-risk
persons by providing
life-sustaining and life-
rebuilding services that
are comprehensive and
address underlying causes.
The Hope Center is widely
known as a homeless
shelter. That’s true, but it’s
so much more.
it’s not enough to only
provide the homeless in our
community with a place to
get off the street; we must
also provide them with the
tools they need to stay off
the street. The root causes
of homelessness vary
widely. That is why our
programs are so important.
Each person who enters
our doors is valuable and
unique. Our goal is to
provide each one with the
tools they need to rebuild
their lives.

2 HOPE CENTER
LETTER fROm THE ExECUTivE diRECTOR
Twenty years ago, on June 14, 1993, our community held the opening dedication for the Hope Center Emergency shelter on West Loudon Avenue. it was the only facility we had, and it housed everything we did. it had 116 beds.
Today, we still operate the shelter and provide food, clothing and a place to sleep to anyone who comes to our door. Thanks to the generosity of Lexmark, we have had the land donated to do more. West Loudon is now also home to the George Privett Recovery Center, the Don and Cathy Jacobs House and the Jacobs Hope Cafeteria. We have and continue to remodel the shelter to provide more emergency capacity. We provide a place to sleep for as many as 450 men in these buildings.
That’s not all. We also provide permanent housing for 40 men in recovery at Hill Rise Place. We serve about 80 women in need of recovery at the Ball-Quantrell Jones Center for Women on Versailles Road. We provide 44 units of permanent housing for recovering women in the Barbara H. Rouse House next door to the Women’s Recovery Center. At one Parent scholar House we provide housing to more than 180 parents and children in 10 apartment buildings.
Altogether, we provide shelter and housing to as many as 800 people each night.
The numbers are not the whole story or even the most important story. in fact, there is not just one story at the Hope Center, there are thousands of stories each year. They are the stories of the individual men, women and children who come to us because they need something we will provide them: refuge, food to eat, clothing to wear, treatment for mental illness, recovery from addiction, health services, help with employment, child development, the chance to go to college, a place to live.
There are many faces here, faces with many human expressions. The look i see most often on these faces is hope – hope for a better life, hope to regain control, hope to strive and succeed.
Thank you for helping make these things possible. Together we have created 20 years of Hope.
Very truly yours,
Cecil F. Dunn

ANNUAL REPORT 12-13 3
Emergency shelter The Emergency shelter is the first-stop for most Hope Center clients. Last year, the shelter provided more than 66,000 nights of lodging, 13,000 healthcare services and 40,000 articles of clothing. in 2013, much-needed renovations began which will expand the Health Clinic, sleeping quarters and bathroom facilities.
Jacobs Hope Cafeteria The new Jacobs Cafeteria feeds the men from both the Emergency shelter and the new Don and Cathy Jacobs House in a modern and pleasant setting. it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the year, serving over 430 meals daily.
Last year we provided more than 156,000 meals. Each evening for dinner, the Jacobs Hope Cafeteria is open to anyone in the community needing a meal.
george Privett Recovery Center for Men The Privett Center houses the men’s recovery program. There are currently 225 men in the program, our recovery program has a high rate of success with an 82% decrease in alcohol use and a 91% decrease in illegal drugs being reported thirty days after Phase 1 of the program. The Privett Center provided 48,000 nights of lodging and 150,000 meals in 2012.
don and Cathy Jacobs House The Jacobs House houses men who are learning to overcome addiction, mental health issues, employability deficits and other challenges to self-reliant, independent living. it provides 144 beds, which reduces the capacity pressure of the 116-bed Hope Center Emergency shelter. it provided over 30,000 nights of lodging last year.
ball-Quantrell Jones Recovery Center for Women Approximately, 80 women are being served at the Women’s Center and at any given time and there is normally a waiting list of those who wish to enter. More than 1,460 women have received some level of services since the program began in 2002, and 479 women have completed all aspects of the program. 162 women entered the program last year.
Mental Health Programin 2012, the Mental Health Program served 147 clients and assisted them with various services from medications, therapy, housing, to life skill groups, payee services and dual-diagnosis groups. Appropriate clients are referred to affordable housing when they are deemed ready.
Each year, several clients are housed in the community and continue to live independently with the help of a weekly visit from their Hope Center case manager. The regular visits and case management assistance are only one part of what makes this program so unique. Ultimately, the Mental Health Team attempts to help stabilize the clients and prepare them for community living regardless of the time it takes to achieve these goals.

A gift: DAviD Brown“About halfway through the Hope Center
recovery process, something changed in me – in the way I viewed myself and other people,
and my perception of the world. ”
–David, Phase 1 Case Manager, Recovery Center for Men
As far back as i can remember, i saw my mom struggle to make a good living for us. My dad was absent, and i learned my sense of responsibility
from helping my mother take care of us. i drank my first beer at age 9, and as i got older, found relief from that pressure and responsibility in alcohol.
At 18, i joined the Army, and finally felt like i was part of something bigger, part of a family. But since alcohol and drinking were acceptable in that
environment, i was allowed to drink to excess, and addiction took hold of me there. i got out of the military, married my first wife, and had 3 children, but my addiction destroyed the marriage. My addiction led me to sleeping in abandoned houses and cars and not eating or bathing for days at a time.
i entered my first detox in 1997. Between 1997 and 2000, i entered and completed that program six times and entered detox 17 times. on my last detox entry, they informed me there was nothing else
they could do and suggested that i go to the Hope Center. i remember riding the Greyhound bus from Louisville to Lexington, thinking, am i
even worth it? Am i worth a new life?
About halfway through the Hope Center recovery process, something changed in me – in the way i viewed myself and other people, and my
perception of the world. After several years working up through the ranks and dedicating myself to the program, i was promoted to Recovery Case
Manager for Phase 1, where i am now.
The Hope Center has given me many gifts, but one in particular really changed my life. For 20 years, i had not had a key to my mother’s house. in my third year of sobriety, she gave me a key, which meant she had begun to trust me again. she later told me that the Hope Center is where God had
sent me, and where i should stay. And because of that, and because of her, i dedicate my life to the Hope Center.

Health Clinicour clients typically do not have access to regular health care so we offer a free clinic at both the men’s emergency shelter and the women’s recovery center. A nurse practitioner is on staff at the women’s center and the HealthFirst Bluegrass staff treats clients at the emergency shelter. in addition to health care services, the nurses also provide education on healthcare issues. The clinics provided more than 13,400 services to clients last year.
social services Programour social services team assists elderly and severely physically disabled clients with housing, health care, transportation, finances, and connecting them with other resources and agencies as needed. Last year, 126 clients received services through this program.
Employment Programour Employment Program supports the client’s effort to find employment by offering clients employment training opportunities, transportation to interviews, resume and referral assistance, assistance with off-site housing, higher education information and more. More than 4,900 clients requested assistance with employment and housing last year.
Transitional HousingThis program provides semi-private rooms for clients participating in the Employment Program. These clients pay rent, save money and continue to work on life skills as they prepare themselves for independent living outside the shelter.

i went to UK on an art scholarship, and started dabbling in photography in 2005. The minute i picked up a camera, i knew what
i wanted to do with the rest of my life. i dove right in and started a successful photography business and was doing well for myself,
when an arrest brought everything crashing down. Due to some prior convictions, i was looking at some serious prison time- but it was my
God-given talent that saved me; i had taken family photos for the court bailiff, who personally vouched for me. i was let out on bail, and ended
up fighting my court case for over three years. in the end, i agreed to a plea bargain which included one year in prison, and that’s how my
journey to the Hope Center began.
God put me here for a reason. When i started really listening, i realized that my life was unmanageable. Unlike my brothers here, i
had a choice to leave, but i didn’t want to. i believe in the Hope Center, i’ve seen it change lives- i’m one of those people. i want to be an
upstanding citizen, be a good father and husband. i needed to change, and the Hope Center gave me that. it will always have a special place in
my heart.
i plan to open a new photography studio when i complete the program, and to pursue my passion for photography. The Hope Center
taught me that if i can do what i love every day, i can be successful. They showed me that i can be happy when i do what i love.

Loving voices At one PArent schoLAr house: cAren “Everyone here supports each other. We are all single parents helping single parents.”
–Caren; mom, student and singer
i have been singing ever since i can recall with my church and have performed for many events, including the Black Achievers banquet. i auditioned for American idol in 2008 as well. singing and listening to music is my stress release. i don’t see it being a career – i just enjoy singing.
i became pregnant in 2007, my senior year of high school, with my now 5 year old son Taeshawn. While living with my parents, i enrolled at Bluegrass Community Technical College and was working on my associate’s degree when i became pregnant with my daughter, Amaya. i was at a point in my life where i was ready to become independent, but was nervous and scared because i didn’t know where to go. My cousin, a former resident of one Parent scholar House, told me about the program.
The staff made the transition for me and my children very comfortable. They were able to help me with supportive services and assist me with getting me the help i needed in making a future for my family.
Everyone here supports each other. We are all single parents helping single parents. All of the teachers are hands on with the kids and my kids love the Child Development Center. Amaya asks every saturday if she can go to school.
i will continue to express my love of music through my singing while i work hard to provide a better future for my family at one Parent scholar House.

“I can use my gift of being a critical thinker and a problem solver to give back and make
a difference in people’s lives.”
–Drew, Nurse
After completing a fellowship and my nursing degree, i began working as a nurse in an iCU open heart surgery recovery unit. Within a few
months of beginning my new job, i began to steal drugs to support my addiction, which had begun in college. When i got caught, i
immediately resigned and reported myself to the nursing board.
At their suggestion, i completed a 30 day recovery program. They also set me up with a sponsor, a cardiologist who is in the impaired
Physicians Program. My sponsor told me, “what’s done is done, now we have to preserve your license and preserve your life.”
Unfortunately, i relapsed and started using amphetamines, oxycodone and heroin. i once again reported my actions to the nursing board in
order to keep my license, and they recommended long-term treatment. My parents were scared, they told me that i had one week to find a
treatment program and move out. They dropped me off at the Hope Center.
i have completed Phase one of the recovery program, and am looking forward to working in nursing again. There is satisfaction in nursing.
i can use my gift of being a critical thinker and a problem solver to give back and make a difference in people’s lives. i am now considering a
Master’s degree in nursing.
The Hope Center is a blessing. now i’m a human being again.

Hispanic ProgramThe Hispanic Program helps spanish-speaking clients overcome the language barriers that stand between them and independent living. The bilingual coordinator of this program ensures that our spanish-speaking clients benefit fully from programs offered by the Hope Center. over 1,200 people were assisted through this program last year.
Hill Rise Place This 40-unit efficiency apartment building provides male clients who are ready to move back into the community with a low-cost, drug- and alcohol-free residence that supports their recovery.
barbara Hardwick Rouse House This 44-unit apartment building provides permanent housing for women at a rate they can afford and without concern about the lives they have left behind. This facility provides drug- and alcohol-free permanent housing to women in recovery, and an atmosphere that supports their continued sobriety.
Mobile Outreach TeamThe Mobile outreach Team includes a nurse and two caseworkers who reach out to homeless and marginally housed community members from a custom motor home -the HopeMobile- parked at a different downtown church location each week day. More than 7,600 people requested services from the HopeMobile last year.
detention Center The Hope Center offers a recovery program for men and women at the Fayette County Detention Center. Last year 105 men and 73 women entered the recovery program at the Detention Center.
A staff of recovering men and women guide inmate clients through a four month intensive recovery program. Volunteers help conduct meetings and work one-on-one with our clients.
Detention Center clients are also given the opportunity to continue their recovery programs after release by transitioning directly into the Hope Center’s Recovery Program for Women, or the Recovery Program for Men. By directly linking the jail program with other Hope Center recovery programs, a seamless continuum of services is provided, which often proves crucial for the high risk population we serve.
in addition to providing life-changing, life-saving experiences to at-risk men and women, the program also saves our community many thousands of tax dollars by dramatically reducing the re-arrest rate of the clients who complete this program.

cheryL h.“Today I can be who I really am. I could never do that before. I am in a place where I am comfortable with myself and where I am in life, and I can help others
suffering from the same disease as me.”
–Cheryl, teacher
For some, teaching is a true calling. For others, it is a hidden gift that is discovered later in life. The Hope Center helped me discover my gift of
teaching others.
i was born in Pewee Valley Prison while my mother was incarcerated for murder. i am one of seven siblings and went into the foster care system for part of my infant life. When i was four, my mother was released and
gained custody of me. We moved to indiana where life was hard. Mom was abusive so you never knew what to expect from her. i don’t remember my
mom ever showing any of us kids affection with a hug or pat on the back. My older brother really raised me. i took my first drink at twelve years old,
began smoking marijuana and by thirteen i was partying in the bars.
i found myself married, a mother, and popping pills and drinking. i was a functioning addict working in a sewing plant and drinking on the weekends;
soon i was drinking every day. Ten years of drinking and pills had turned me into a person i did not even recognize and i walked out on my son and husband. Drinking was just a normal everyday part of my life. For six years
the only time i got out of bed was to get a drink. i was 115 pounds and dying. After losing my home, car and the respect of friends and family, i entered
the Women’s Recovery program on August 19, 2012. i came in hopeless and found hope. The Hope Center saved my life.
i now feel i have the patience and love needed to help guide clients in understanding their disease. i teach steps 1, 2 and 3 of Alcoholics
Anonymous, in which they identify the problem, define the solution and decide to take action to bring about the solution. Today i can be who i really
am. i could never do that before. i am in a place where i am comfortable with myself and where i am in life, and i can help others suffering from the
same disease as me.

The purpose of the grant is to provide services to populations that have traditionally been underserved by conventional health care systems.
veterans Program The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded the Hope Center a grant designed to help reduce the number of veterans who are homeless and without needed services. The grant assists the Hope Center in conducting extensive outreach programs, clinical assessments, mental health treatment, alcohol and drug abuse counseling and employment assistance. A total of 49 veterans were provided housing, meals and social services through our Veterans Program last year.

Josh“I couldn’t have done it without the Veterans Program-
it really helps when you have knowledgeable people who know who to call on your side.
Cooking is a creative way for me to show kindness to others while I rebuild my life at the Hope Center.”
–Josh, chef
i am a client in the Hope Center’s Veterans Program. i served in the U.s. Army, national Guard, and navy. My service took me to military bases all
over the southeast and Midwest. My gift is cooking delicious food for family and friends. Cooking is a passion for me. it takes my mind off things when
i'm cooking, it’s like everything else doesn’t exist.
i left the navy in 2002 and since then i have worked in a variety of jobs, including construction and roofing. i came to the Hope Center for a brief time in 2011, and returned in october of 2012. i entered the Veterans Program three
weeks later. The program is helping me get my medical benefits. i couldn’t have done it without the Veterans Program- it really helps when you have
knowledgeable people who know who to call on your side.
With the assistance of the Hope Center, i am enrolling in the Lab Tech program at Medtech this fall. i will be pursuing part-time employment after
beginning my classes. in the meantime, i will remain at the Hope Center, where i enjoy cooking for my fellow residents. i try to make enough for
everyone. The donations of food from local businesses are really great. i would love to make my homemade spaghetti sauce for the guys sometime.
Editor’s note: When Josh cooks, it’s not uncommon for guys to pop their heads in and ask what’s for dinner. He has also volunteered at other local
homeless shelters, preparing food and sandwiches for people in need. Josh’s cooking is a creative way for him to show kindness to others while
he rebuilds his life at the Hope Center.

fAith heALs: AshLey g. “I really started working on my relationship with a higher power, which I never had before. The program gave me everything I needed to be successful in my recovery. They loved me until I could love me.”
–Ashley G., grateful believer
Hope Center clients possess many gifts, but they also receive gifts during their time at the Hope Center. Just like me. i received the gift of faith. When i came here, i was scared and intimidated, but when i saw the comfort of the sos office, as soon as i walked into the room, i was relieved. i knew that i was somewhere safe. Before, i was so sick, i was broken. i didn’t realize how bad it was. When i walked through the doors, it was instant relief.
i graduated with honors from Jessamine County High school, where i was a varsity cheerleader and played both softball and soccer. i was enrolled in college and working full-time when i was hospitalized with a serious blood clot and prescribed pain medicine. i misused my pain medicine, and became so addicted that i lost everything- my job, apartment and most importantly, my relationship with my family. on my birthday in July 2012, i toured the Hope Center’s Women’s Recovery Center and was put on the waiting list and i entered the program a few months later.
in motivational track, i really started working on my relationship with a higher power, which i never had before. The program gave me everything i needed to be successful in my recovery. They loved me until i could love me.
i am now a peer mentor, which i feel is part of a greater plan for my life. My journey is just starting. i got to start over at the Hope Center. i got to rebuild my relationships with my family and with God. i’ve never been this happy in my life. i’m just turning 30, and my life is just starting. i’m truly grateful for this program. Finding my God has made all the difference.

bAll HOMEs NigHT Of HOPE "no matter who you are, no matter what your story is, you too can discover the gifts with which you were born,” said Chef Jeff Henderson, the keynote speaker at the 2012 Ball Homes night of Hope. Attendees at the night of Hope listened to his amazing story, where his time in prison for drug dealing taught him to embrace everyday opportunities. He learned how to cook, which became his passion; and has become a Food network star and bestselling author. Everett McCorvey and his students provided special music and WVLK radio host Jack Pattie served as the master of ceremonies. The Hope Center thanks our sponsors for making the Ball Homes night of Hope possible.
