PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

6 HighGear | Celebrating 60 Years | 1958 - 2018

THIS HAS BEEN QUITE A YEAR FOR RMRWow! This has been quite a year for

RMR. Our 60th Anniversary is coming to a close and we embark on our seventh decade of promoting our enjoyment of everything Porsche. The driving season is over and snow is starting to permeate our existence. Hot chocolate by the fire replaces a hot track and the firing on all cylinders.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at our holiday party. For me, it is a chance to reacquaint with Porsche friends who I rarely see during the season and to laugh and be merry with the friends I regularly see. It is a very enjoyable evening. If you haven’t attended the holiday party before, it is a must do.

The installation of the 2019 Board will also happen at the party. We are very fortunate to have such a talented team guiding RMR. I speak in volumes of the great talent we have in our volunteer ranks – and it’s true. Our volunteers are second to none. However, the Board is rarely discussed. I guess it’s a certain amount of modesty and a concern of sounding pompous.

Given my career as a lawyer, I have worked with many boards for both profit and nonprofit entities. It is amazing the range of talent and collegiality there has been on these various boards. Our current RMR board is among the top that I have had the pleasure of working with. Each member of the Board is a dedicated

volunteer, who works tirelessly for RMR, despite real jobs, families and whatever else life dishes out. I am very honored to be the President of this Board and look forward to making 2019 one of the best years of RMR.

Here’s to all having a peaceful and joyous holiday season. May you and yours be happy, healthy and enjoy whatever Porsche gifts you may give or receive this season. On to 2019!

… and don’t forget, Eiskhana is happening this January. Don’t miss out!

TRACK TALK

Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

That’s right, what a year.

We did our best to live up to our performance-driving program theme of Raising the Bar Higher. Here’s a recap of some of the highlights.

2017 Distinguished Driver Dale Hartzell and Most Improved Male and Female Drivers Mark Fenner and Debbie Keisling were honored at the January Member Social.

Some new ideas and events were mixed into the schedule.

A prime example was a very memorable evening at the beautiful CU South Events Center Theatre to kick off the track season. It started with our Annual RMR/AMR Instructor Clinic where 125 instructors participated in a lively discussion sharing instructing best practices. Afterwards, Patrick Long, the only American Porsche Factory Race Car Driver kept an audience of 225 people engaged for two straight hours talking about his racing experiences and his race craft.

Another was our club’s first-ever one-day Novice DE at the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) track. With the incredibly successful Ladies’ Day DE the day before, it was a tremendous and fun weekend for everyone.

Sixty-nine first-timers “caught the track bug” at the April DE/Autocross 101 orientation led by CDIs Brian “Lear Jet” Leary and Scott “Hendo” Henderson.

• 40 of them subsequently participated in one or more DE or Autocross events.

• 12% of the “101” participants participated in 5 or more events.

• Attendee Mark Taylor went to 8 out of the 10 DE and Autocross events – way to go Mark!

• 27 of them drove in the April Autocross event.

• 15 participants were part of the Ladies’ Day and/or Novice DE weekend at CSP.

• There were 7 couples at the “101” class who subsequently participated in an event weekend.

Jan and Randy Pidhayny attended a total of 9 event weekends!

Student ratings of their instructors and events were consistently high.

All of our DE and Autocross events were enjoyable, well attended, educational, and financially successfully. Most importantly, our emphasis on safety paid off once again.

Note that next year’s DE / Autocross 101 is scheduled for Saturday morning, March 30 at 3R Racing.

While 2018 is “in the books,” we look forward to implementing some fresh new ideas and events for next year’s performance-driving program. Your suggestions are always welcome – we listen!

Lastly, thanks to all of you volunteers who stepped up to make all of this happen. MUCH APPRECIATED!

Have the very best holiday season, and I’ll see you next year.

HG

PAST EVENT — EDELWEISS FALL TOUR

Photographs: Vicki Cox-Jones, Russ Rydberg, and Michelle Sandhu

Since I had never been to the Edelweiss German Restaurant in Colorado Springs before, and I had heard rave reviews from fellow members, I was se-riously considering signing up for the tour. However, my hubby was a little more on the fence because the tour was sandwiched between the last DE of the sea-son and the last autocross. He thought a weekend “off” would be nice. When I had convinced him to go, it was too late, the tour was full. I thought, “bummer, oh well, there is always next year.” Then the week of the tour, Holly Jackson sent me a text offering me a ride in her Targa (her husband Dave was cancelling because of work). Well, as you can guess, my answer was YES!

It was a perfect Colorado autumn day, a little crisp but bright and sunny, when Holly and I arrived at the Perfect Landing Restaurant parking lot. Several of the 67 Porsches that were joining us on the drive were already there, as they had gathered for the Breakfast Club prior to the drive. Everybody was having a great time catching up with friends while waiting in line to sign the waiver.

Following the drivers’ meeting, led by our fearless leader Erik Behrendsen, the cars lined up behind their respective group leader. With so many people and cars attending we were split into three groups. We wound our way out of town, heading west towards Castle Pines. We eventually found our way to the inter-

esting town of Sedalia, where we were finally on open road, Perry Park Road to be precise, headed south towards our destination! Getting there was a bit of an adventure. Holly didn’t really mention I would have to navigate. Our discussions were mainly on how to get out of town up to this point. Once all our group was following, we could marvel at the magnificent moun-tain views along with the horse stables. At one point, we encountered a one-lane road with a flagger. We mentioned to the flagger there were 17 other Porsches in hopes he would let us all through. He grinned and mentioned we were the second group of Porsches to go through. The second flagger waived enthusiasti-cally as we passed. Once we were through the con-struction it was an uneventful drive to Monument and on to Colorado Springs.

Once we arrived at the Edelweiss German Restau-rant, we were treated to wonderful German food and even some libations for those who wanted to partake. The weather was perfect to enjoy lunch in the outdoor beer garden. However, I think the best part of the day was getting to talk to so many friends. I find the last events of the season (whether DE, autocross, or tour) to be rather bittersweet. I get so much enjoyment be-ing around a group of people with at least one com-mon interest – our cars – and I look forward to seeing you all again next season.

PCA’S AUTOCROSS LOGO CONTEST

21HighGear 1958 - 2018 | Celebrating 60 Years |

In October 2017, the Porsche Club of America (PCA) initiated a logo contest to find an image that best represented PCA’s hugely popular national Au-tocross program. PCA looked to its members to generate ideas for the new logo. To entice entries, a $450 cash prize was offered and contest sponsor Pirelli “stepped up” and sweetened the deal with a set of Pirelli tires (maximum retail value of $1,500).

PCA specified that the new autocross logo must represent PCA’s Autocross program and must con-tain the word “Autocross” and could also include “Porsche Club of America” or “PCA.” The winning logo was to be used online, in print form, and on logo merchandise, and, therefore, the artwork need-ed to resize easily and to look good in black and white as well as in color. Due to the requirements for high-quality printing and re-sizing, logo entries had to be submitted in scalable vector graphic format (an .EPS file).

According to PCA Director of Administration, Laura Moffitt, over 200 logos were submitted for the con-test. PCA staff and Executive Council narrowed the entries down to five logos. In mid-September, PCA looked for input from its membership in choosing the winner. Online voting was done via www.Survey-Monkey.com with voting ending September 24th.

On October 9th PCA announced that the winning autocross logo was created by Rocky Mountain Re-gion member William Simon.

If you have read the last few issues of RMR’s High-Gear you have seen some other examples of Bill’s work and creativity. Since August 2018, Bill has been working with HighGear Editor Tom Champion on the layout and production of RMR’s award-winning newsletter.

As for the new Pirelli rubber…Bill has yet to decide if the new tires will be a set of Pirelli P6000s for his 1984 911 Carrera Targa or a set of Pirelli P Zero Tro-feos for the 1996 993 Targa.

Decisions, decisions.

POSITIVE OUTCOME FROM A TRAGIC ACCIDENT

Jerry Schouten hadn’t drunk enough water before the race, and his cool suit seemed to not be working quite right. But Schouten, 65, had driven in hotter weather, and on Aug. 17, 2013, he steered his 1974 Porsche Carrera RSR as ably as ever – until the moment he passed out. His car veered off the High Plains Raceway track, smashed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames.

Shortly before the helicopter arrived to rush him to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) on the Anschutz Medical Campus, Jerry told his wife of nearly 47 years: “I’ll be alright, Netty.”

He lived another three weeks, but those words were the last he would ever say to her. Five years later, Arnette Schouten’s dona-tion of the proceeds from the sale of another Porsche promises to help UCH intensive care patients like Jerry continue to communi-cate. But making a difference would take more than money.

Locked InPatients in intensive care units are there because their lives are

at risk. They are often sedated. They often rely on mechanical ventilation to do their breathing for them. But often, too, research has shown, they’re “awake, alert, and responsive to verbal com-munication” even if they can’t themselves verbalize. This was the case with Jerry Schouten during his time in the UCH Burn Center.

Early on, he tried to speak. Neither Arnette nor the Burn Unit nurses could understand him. Burns to one arm and damage to

the other made pointing, much less writing, impossible. And so, Arnette says, he lay there with his eyes closed – listening, fam-ily and friends assumed, but no longer trying to make himself understood. This despite Jerry always having been the family’s “talker,” as she put it.

Skin graft surgeries and the amputation of his shattered left an-kle happened without a word of his input. Even as he recognized he was losing the fight, despite being surrounded by loved ones, Jerry didn’t have a chance to say goodbye.

“He died without being able to tell us how he felt,” Arnette said.Arnette made up her mind that she would give back to the

UCH Burn Center. It would take a few years and the expertise of UCHealth specialists who had been looking into the very chal-lenge Jerry had faced.

‘Frustration, Anger, Extreme Stress’Meghann Griffin and Kaylee Skidmore, UCHealth speech-lan-

guage pathologists, had been studying ways to help intubated patients like Jerry communicate. Beyond their own experience – both provided bedside care in the hospital’s ICUs, and Griffin has specialist training in speech therapy for burn patients – there were compelling studies backing their belief that the work could help patients.

In one, patients interviewed after mechanical ventilation re-ported that their inability to communicate worsened their sense

— Editor’s Preface —Many thanks to longtime RMR member Ken Provasi for

informing me of this article that appeared in UCHealth Today dated 11/10/2018.

Ken and RMR member Mike Forster were working the corner at High Plains Raceway where Jerry Schouten’s accident occurred and were first on the scene that terrible day. So, this article has special meaning to Ken.

Ken knew both Jerry and Arnette Schouten for over 30 years and was surprised to see that there was a very positive outcome from this tragic accident at HPR four years ago.

Many RMR members knew Jerry also, and Ken is sure that they would all appreciate learning about this final chapter in Jerry’s life and how Jerry’s wife, Arnette, turned her loss into something good.

It is a true tribute to the way Jerry and Arnette lived their lives, always giving to others.

Be sure to watch Channel 4’s coverage of Arnette’s wonderful gift at https://denver.cbslocal.com/2018/09/24/widow-husband-uchealth-donation.

of distress and heightened frustration and anger. Another study found that speech-language pathologists and augmentative and al-ternative communication (known as AAC) tools can help assuage the frustration, panic, anxiety, dehumanization and sleeplessness such patients reported. A UCH study pending publication found the inability to communicate to be the top complaint of those who had been intubated. Griffin and Skidmore had started working on ways to address all this.

“I can’t tell you the amount of research that goes into the trauma that patients experience because they can’t communicate when they’re in one of the most vulnerable situations in their lives,” Griffin said. “They can’t talk to their family. They can’t express their needs

.”

The 911 Porsche RSFor a quarter century, Jerry did club racing in events held by

the Rocky Mountain Region Porsche Club of America (Arnette did her share of driving, too). His Porches dated to the 1970s and 1980s. They weren’t the fastest or the priciest, but Jerry’s rac-ing skills compensated for deficits in horsepower and handling. A few years back, he bought another one. It was old, too – a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS. He told Arnette it would pay for their retirement one day.

“And I said, ‘Oh, yeah, right, Jerry. You just want to race it,’” Arnette said.

He did race it for a bit, but he also did some research. He checked with Porsche in Germany and learned that this white car had once been light yellow. He had already noted that the car’s major components had “matching numbers” – meaning original parts. Friends told him he was crazy to race it. So he moved on to other cars and started work on restoring it with help from local Porsche mechanic and racecar builder Steve Rowe. But they both got busy and the project stalled.

A week after Jerry died, Arnette reached out to Rowe.

“We’ve got to get this done. We’ve just got to get it done, for Jerry,” she told him.

Her plans for the 911 RS, though, had nothing to do with re-tirement.

Talking with One’s EyesGriffin and Skidmore had been working on a program to help

ICU patients better communicate for a solid year when they sat down with Arnette last spring. The 911 RS had sold, and Arnette wanted to donate the proceeds to the UCH Burn Center for exact-ly the sort of work they were doing. In the months that followed, Griffin considered an array of options across the gamut of tech-nological sophistication. She and Skidmore settled upon three of them.

First, for patients who like Jerry can’t tap a screen, there would be a Tobii Dynavox, a thick tablet computer with dual cameras to track a patient’s eye movements. It then determines what the patient is focusing on and reacts according to the task at hand: recording the letter on a digital keyboard, selecting a prepro-grammed phrase (the device can read words and phrases aloud), opening a web browser, launching a video call – about anything one can do on a PC.

“That’s what Jerry would have needed,” Arnette said.Second, the speech-language pathology team will acquire sev-

eral tablet computers with specialized software. Those will en-able much the same for patients who can’t talk but can tap. Third, they’re going to distribute dozens of 18-inch by 12-inch white-boards for use throughout UCH’s intensive care units. The front side of the boards will have the letters of the alphabet for spelling things out and space to write; on the reverse side, there will be roughly 20 simple-but-vital phrases such as “I’m in pain,” “I’m cold” and “I need my glasses.” The idea is that nurses can start with the whiteboards and, based on the patient’s needs, move on to tablets or the Tobii as needed, Griffin says.

Meghann Griffin, left, works with Arnette Schouten as they calibrate the Tobii Dynavox to recognize Schouten’s eye movements. Once calibrated the device uses two cameras below the screen to track eye movements

that can enable typing and text-to-speech, web surfing and other activities familiar to computer users.

(continued from page 26)A Chance to Talk“It’s going to allow patients to be more active in their care,”

Griffin said. “They’re going to be able to get so much deeper

in their conversations with family members, and just to express what they’re feeling emotionally is a lot easier with something like this.”

She and Skidmore are planning a research project to determine if and how the high- and low-tech additions improve ICU patient satisfaction and well-being. It’s the sort of work that can change best practices far and wide.

Arnette’s generosity is going to help meet the needs of not just Burn ICU patients, but also those in ICUs throughout UCH.

“It’s massive,” Griffin said. “It’s a big deal.”The Tobii Dynavox will come too late for Jerry Schouten. But

Arnette has an inkling that her husband would have approved of this sort of gifting of their “retirement.”

“I think he would be proud of me,” she said. “I think it’s cool that I was able to do it and that Meghann and everybody are just so thrilled with it, and that we’ve found something that will be such a neat tool.”

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

It’s been a tough year. Politics excluded. Although that hasn’t helped.

My father passed in early January. The day before my birthday. He was one of a dying breed, literally. A veteran of the big one, WWII. Battle of the Bulge. Wounded twice. Silver Star, although he never found out why. He was 18. I can’t even begin to imagine what he saw and felt, and went through.

A favorite aunt passed this summer. My oldest friend passed a few months ago. And, by oldest, I mean from the first grade. He introduced me to my ex. Some sort of rare blood disease.

It goes on. Another friend, with whom I play golf every few weeks or so, just found out he has stage three liver disease. And this is while he’s been preparing for spinal surgery. He retired just two years ago. You hear about these stories…..

My mother, who turns 90 in five days from this writing, says you do sort of get used to it. You don’t have a choice. She keeps asking me if she sounds “older.” I say, no, you’re as sharp as you’ve ever been. I’m not sure she believes me. I’m not sure I believe myself.

What to do? I’m doubling down on an active lifestyle. Eating well, living well, loving well. I ran another half marathon a few weeks ago. Out of 11,000 or so runners, there were 10 souls in my age group. That’s it, 10. I finished sixth. I checked the times for the next older age group. And, sure enough, if I continue at my current pace, in three years I’ll win just by showing up.

So, looking back, what’s been consistent? My parents, my daughters, my lover, my friends, my dog, my cars.

Ah, my cars.I’ve owned six Porsches. Bought

my first one at 27. I still have number three, a ’78 SC. I’m celebrating its 40th anniversary on the planet. Actually, it’s 41 - the build date on the rocker panel says October ’77. It’s an early SC. I’ve owned it exactly 30 years.

I remember clearly the day I drove it home. A private sale. My father drove me to pick it up, and my older daughter came along. She was six. She’s a pediatrician now. Married, with two boys and a daughter due next month. All kids all the time. God Bless Her!

Alison rode home with me in the Porsche. She thought it was the coolest thing, sitting in one of the jump seats. “Seats just for me!” she said. Although her sister soon occupied the other jump seat. No matter. I had plenty of room. One of my most cherished photos is of them both, as teenagers, posing at dusk in front of the car. More like striking a pose.

That car has been with me through three of six corporate relocations. It’s had license plates from four states. Three exhausts. I’ve lost track of how many sets of tires. Although I do remember a few sets ago. They dry rotted from the inside. I had no idea. I discovered the problem when I tried to check their inflation. The valve stem slid inside the tire.

The SC turned 50,000 miles last year. I tell this to people, and they look at me like I should be put away. But I’m always ready with a simple explanation for why I hang on.

First of all, it’s turned into a good investment, although that’s only over the past 10 or so years. The first 20, the car’s value stayed absolutely flat. Second, there’s the cost of ownership. Classic car insurance. If it needs service,

that’s usually a once-a-year proposition. It takes forever for anything to break, which enables me to enjoy the essence of ownership of a classic driver. It’s what I call “the thrill.” What’s “the thrill?” It’s the fact that, every time I get in, it feels like a new experience. I experience the thrill of discovery, again and again. The smell. The mixed-up ergonomics. The “je ne sais quoi.”

The driving. Learning, once again, how to finesse the gearbox into shifting, just so, with no grinding. The ride. They say that, in a Morgan, you can drive over a dime and tell if it’s heads or tails. I think you can also do that in an early Porsche. O, the beauty of no manual assists.

Unless the ambient temperature is way, way low, I always drive with the sunroof open. And go searching for underpasses and tunnels, where I can downshift one, maybe two, gears and nail the throttle, in order to bask in the music of power.

I never winterize it. Oh no. If it’s snowy and icy for extended periods, I’ll start it. Roll it backward and forward, in order to keep the tires from f lat-spotting. I get the fluids up to operating temperature before shutting it off. And, on those crystal, sun-bathed winter days, I’ll venture out. Oh yes, I will.

Am I crazy? Am I playing with time? Maybe. But, then again, maybe not. Others have been down this road. I think Fitzgerald said it best, when he concluded his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, with this line: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

Happy Holidays. Let’s keep making memories.

IT’S BEEN A TOUGH YEAR

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

Being a Zone Rep for PCA is a “2+2” assignment. Two years for the first term, and a second two years unless you hang up the keys, or the Executive Council back at PCA headquarters hears that you really messed up. Former Zone Reps that I meet regularly remind me that it is the most re-warding National Staff “job” in PCA. I totally agree.

The reason for even bringing up this milestone is that as I crest the mid-term hill, it is worth mentioning that in a short 18 months we will start looking for the next Zone 9 Representative. The process will involve phone interviews with, at minimum, the President and Vice-Presi-dent of PCA (Tom Gorsuch and Cindy Ja-cisin). They will also be looking for input from me, as well.

Preference has typically been given to past Region Presidents. And this is not limited to “current” Presidents. So if you are a past President and missing the action, consider throwing your name in the mix when the time comes. There are at least a couple dozen of you reading this, so think about it. It is also not always true that only former Region Presidents are selected. So if you have been an active leader with mul-tiple roles on your region board, and have

“seen it all” over the years, you should also consider putting your name in the mix.

I meet lots of members in regions who find that the “job” of a Zone Rep for PCA is a bit of a mystery. That’s completely understandable. PCA has 14 zones - one Zone Rep for each. Our Zone 9 covers seven regions that stretch from Idaho to the Mexico border and cover all of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, plus the southern parts of Wyoming and the western parts of Texas. For most club members, the Zone Rep is seen only occasionally at a social, DE, autocross, or tour in their re-gion. However, the invisible part of the “job” is behind the scenes. Our primary role is to act as a liaison between your re-gion’s leadership and the National Office. Equally important is the expectation that we act as a resource for Region Presidents to provide training, share best practices, help as needed with bylaws, elections, Na-tional policies, raise concerns to National, and support planning and succession pro-cesses as requested. We are expected to travel and are reimbursed for attending a minimum of one member event per year in each region. I personally strive for two events and am pleased to say that the Na-tional Office supports my travel plan to

allow this to happen. The reason for starting now to ask you

all to think about a future as a Zone Rep is that we had only two candidates at the time that I applied for the role. In my case, I had only been Region President for 50% of my elected term, which caused some disruption here in the Intermountain Re-gion at the time. So to hopefully build a deep enough bench when my term is up, and to allow a smooth transition at that time, I’m reaching out EARLY, in order to invite levels of interest and offering to share any/all information needed for po-tential candidates to make an informed decision. If you have ANY inclination to become a Zone Rep for PCA in the future (2020, 2024, 2028), I would LOVE TO HEAR from you personally some time in 2019. Simply email me at [email protected]. From there we can set up some phone time and perhaps arrange an individual meeting for a demystifying Q&A session during one of my trips to your region in the coming year.

Happy Holidays to All!!!

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
