We have had a national economic shutdown for over a month now. With RMR, this has meant cancellation or postponement of all our events through the end of May. This is unlike anything I have experienced in my lifetime.

The Board has been focusing on making sure RMR does not sustain serious financial setbacks during this period. The largest cost to RMR is the printing of HighGear. The Board decided that we will publish only an online edition of HighGear for May and June 2020. Depending upon the general economic conditions, we will decide whether we can restart the hardcopy version of HighGear in July or stay with the online-only version.

Even past the “reopening,” we are having to reassess our driving program. Dan Carlson discusses this further in his

“Track Talk” column. It is questionable that we will be able to go back to the old ways of doing things. Social distancing will continue for some time. However, adversity is the mother of invention. We may find the new ways to be superior to the old.

Despite the gloomy days right now, we are still planning for the events ahead. Our summer tours are still on the calendar. Our holiday party is still on.

T h e B o a r d i s experimenting with various ways to use technology to fur ther RMR’s fun . Next month will probably herald our first “Zoom” board meeting. We are also looking into using s im i l a r t e chno logy t o create a “social distancing compliant” social.

I have been p l ac ing entertainment articles on the eblasts and will continue to do so. So, please follow our eblasts.

While the skies are cloudy now, clouds always give way to the sun. There are good days that lie ahead. We will overcome!

MISSING THE RMR FAMILY…My husband and I have been staying home and have been

healthy. We have adapted well to working from home! It has been easy for us but I know it hasn’t been the same for many people. I keep thinking of the old saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. I understand this is not always possible. We are resilient and will adapt to overcome. We will get through this.

I am not happy we had to cancel events through May. I miss being at and participating in RMR events with all of you, the members, my PCA family. Hopefully soon, with caution, extra planning, and limitations, we will slowly open our events. We are mindful to keep everyone healthy and it is best to err on the side of caution.

One thing that struck me, is that I am not very busy with organizing events. This is kind of an odd feeling for me. I feel like I should be working on upcoming events, but there is too much unknown and with restaurants in limbo, I will need to wait this out and be patient. I am hopeful businesses will make it through this pandemic. I am hopeful we will all pull out of this pandemic stronger and as better people looking out for one another and working as a community, as a family.

If you have ever thought about writing an article about a trip you took in your Porsche or went somewhere like the Porsche Museum or one of the Porsche Driving Centers, now is the time. With no events going on in the club, content is slim. We would all appreciate you sharing something Porsche related to soothe our souls. And don’t forget your pictures! Email the HighGear team at [email protected].

Do you have a personalized plate? Take a close up and send it to the HighGear team with what it translates to, if not obvious, and what does it mean to you. Email [email protected].

Lastly, know that we are all in this together. We will make it through these tough times.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones,

Prost!

TRACK TALK

Dan H. CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

When we finally begin this season’s track events, we can all agree that things will be different.

Your RMR leadership team is hard at it – brainstorming cre-ative solutions to address possible challenges for planned near-term events.

Your Chief Driving Instructor Team is considering many op-tions, as the safety of our event participants and volunteers is always a focal point. Safety takes on new meaning when social distancing is added to our list.

Here are some of our social/physical distancing concerns:

• How do we adapt the morning registration process?

• How do we safely conduct the morning Drivers’ Meeting?

• How can we find a way to accommodate novice drivers?

– Can classroom training be done safely - where and how?

– Should we consider doing classroom training via a webinar beforehand?

– Instructors currently sit in the car with their students and use communicators. Instead, “follow-the-leader” behind an instruc-tor’s car, could be an option.

• Do we initially only allow experienced drivers?

– If so, should we design a safe no or low cost “Novice Experi-ence” with an orientation followed by our traditional lunchtime charity drive in your own car on the track at highway speeds? Do we place and then rotate one or two novice drivers with an instructor in a corner worker flag station to learn by observing?

• Then there’s lunch, Beer-Thirty, Walk-the-Track, and the bathrooms and showers…

The Club’s Safety Committee is all over this and we are work-ing closely with them.

So is the RMR Board of Directors. They are also doing mod-eling to determine how many participants are needed to break even financially while determining the Club’s risk tolerance for possible losses.

Then there’s you (and me) - the driver. I suggest we’ll all need to approach this track season differently.

It will be a new day…in another way. Most of us will have more off-season “rust” than ever – our

driving skills will need refreshing. Think about it…our last

HPDE was in October; that’s at least eight months since a num-ber of us have driven on a track – eight months!

It will be back to the basics to prep and to drive.

About your car - your budget might be tighter, but this isn’t the time to save money by not changing your brake and other fluids. Make sure to check your brake pads and rotors, and I highly recommend spending at least ½ hour tightening bolts and clamps under the hood and checking your suspension.

The week before heading to the track, review your track notes and past driving evaluations, and take time visualizing a lap around the track focusing on the line, braking, turn-in, apex, and exit points.

When we get on the track, we shouldn’t rush our reorientation – start cautiously and gradually increase speed with each lap. My guess is that it will take a little time to regain the feel of the car, get comfortable with speed, and regain total confidence in your driving and your car.

It will be a new day…I can’t wait!If you’re like me I bet you can’t wait to try a few new things.

Like Formula One, I am going to mentally break the track down into flowing “sectors,” and tackle one or two at a time.

Several of your instructors and I recently tuned into Ross Bentley’s Speed Secrets “Chalk Talk” webinar, and I picked up a few things. I’m going to try braking earlier but less when enter-ing HPR’s Turn #4, and then gradually move my braking point closer to the turn. I’m marking my track map with my “end-of-braking” points for each turn and will focus more on them. I plan to video my footwork and hands. For one session, I plan to focus on visual sensing, and for another I’ll focus on the sound and feel of the car and track. Lastly, I can’t wait to drive in the rain again!

It will be a new day! No matter what obstacle is in the road ahead of us, we’ll adapt

and make the best of it!

If you missed this event on March 7th, you missed one of our club’s fa-vorite events! With members on hand to answer questions about every facet of our club. We are a big club and organize many diverse events. We have had such great turnout and feedback; we hope to continue to grow this event! Did you see “From the Regions” section in the April issue of Panorama? Alpine Mountain Region (AMR) has modeled their New Member Social after ours! How cool is that? I am personally flattered to be recognized nationally be another region. We really enjoy working with AMR and helping each region learn and grow.

I also want to thank our host, Denver Auto Shield, for another great event! They specialize in Clear Bra, Ceramic Coatings, and Paint Cor-rection. They were helpful, kept us fed and hydrated! And did you see the cookies?! They were so cool and very yummy! I want to thank Jeff McEachran, his brother Jared, and the entire team from Denver Auto Shield who were on hand to answer all sorts of questions members had about their vehicles. And if you were onsite, you were treated to three raffle drawings for some awesome prizes provided by Denver Auto Shield. Also, if you attended, they also offered discounted services! Sometimes it is worth while to show up to our socials!

This year we signed up six new people on the spot! This is awesome! Thank you to those of you that spread the word about the club. We do have a lot of fun! And thank you to all of you that came for the first time to see who we are and what we do. We grow mostly by word of mouth. Remember, you get more out of the club by the more you put into it. Ask the volunteers. I would have an empty spot in my life and in my heart if I didn’t have the club and all the great friends I have made!

We also collected $266.00 for the USS Colorado Submarine Associ-ation. This organization supports morale, well-being and recreation of the crew of the USS Colorado (SSN 788) and their families and works to strengthen ties between the boat and our great state of Colorado. More information can be found on the Association’s website, usscoloradosub-assoc.org.

If you missed this year’s March New Membership So-cial and are a new member, please feel free to contact me di-rectly and ask about the club and how you can be involved. [email protected]

Track Personali t ies:Luann Dodge, Karen Harr ison, and Scot t Henderson

By Lynda LoveLuann Dodge, Karen Harrison, and Scott Henderson have

been close friends for many years, brought together by the track. All three of them have consistently been gracious and helpful to many RMR members, including me. Indeed, their contributions have improved the track driving experience for countless RMR members.

We arranged to have dinner together at Luann Dodge’s house. As they entered Luann’s home, Karen and Scott were warmly greeted. Later over dinner, adult beverages flowed, starting a long free-wheeling conversation about how they came to know each other and the happenings in their lives.

A Ferrari led Karen Harrison to join RMR. She had been en-couraged to join the Ferrari club by her friend Adele Arakawa, a longtime RMR member and local network news anchor. In 2010, three years after her husband died, Karen joined the Ferrari club. Her first track day was in May of 2010, driving her “Ferrari Red” 1986 328 GTS Ferrari at the Pueblo track. She was smitten! Adele and Karen’s friend Dan Mayer (another longtime RMR member) convinced Karen to get a Porsche. In 2011, with Dan’s help, Karen bought a red 1990 944 S2 sight unseen from Missou-ri. Dan was at Karen’s home when the 944 was delivered. Initial-ly Karen was unimpressed with the car, but Dan knew she would like it. Dan was right--Karen loves driving the 944! Since both the Ferrari and the 944 were red, Karen decided the 944 needed a little customizing to set it apart. Her friend Lori suggested the “Lightning McQueen” character from the Disney movie Cars. Karen liked the idea. She added the Cars-inspired graphics to the 944, including the “Lightning McHarrison” printing on the driver’s door.

Karen was one of the first women I met at High Plains Race-way (HPR) back in 2012. I loved her car and took a photo of it. When I asked her about the 944’s graphics, she laughed. “I have groupies! They’re only four feet tall, but I have groupies!” Then she explained, “The little kids LOVE my car!” Even today, Kar-en says that people still take pictures of her 944 and that children still recognize and respond to its graphics.

Karen also owned a second Ferrari, a black 2007 F430 that she bought in 2012. She said, “Funny story about purchasing the F430: I actually made a quick stop at Ferrari of Denver to look for a t-shirt for a friend who had just purchased a Lotus. With a very poor selection of Lotus ‘attire,’ I decided to take a quick look at their inventory since I was already there. I left without a t-shirt and brought home an F430 instead!” In 2017, Karen sold the Ferrari to pay down business loans on her Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza franchise. “You could say I needed ‘dough’ to cover my dough,” she joked.

When Scott Henderson attended the June Driver Education (DE) at HPR as a Father’s Day gift in 2009, he took his 2007 C2S Cabriolet to the track for the first time and was hooked! As fate would have it, he parked next to Dan Mayer and Dan Carlson. They took him under their wings and taught him some of the basics. The track bug bit hard and by August, Scott had traded the C2S for a 2009 Cayman S. “It had PDK, was Meteor Gray and soon was equipped with removeable magnetic neon-green-and-yellow fender stripes and numbers,” Scott recalled. He progressed quickly and was awarded “Men’s Most Improved Driver” in 2010. He became a PCA instructor in 2011, a NASA instructor in 2012, and a Chief Driving Instructor (CDI) Com-mittee member in 2017. In 2018, Scott was named RMR “En-thusiast of the Year.” Scott also started teaching the classroom portion of RMR DEs in 2014, which he still does today.

Along the way, Scott sold the Cayman and bought a 1993 964 racecar. In May 2011, the racecar was stolen. Scott’s friend Adele Arakawa put the stolen racecar on Channel 9 news, advis-ing the public to be on the lookout for the car. Scott said, “It was spotted by Denver Police who tried to pull it over on I-70. But it outran them – at night, in a rainstorm, with no windshield wip-ers, on Hoosiers!” Four weeks later, the racecar was recovered after being found abandoned in a wheat field near DIA. That July, Scott took the recovered racecar to Mid-Ohio Raceway, the only out-of-state track he’s visited (and his favorite racetrack). In 2015, he purchased his Speed Yellow 2004 GT3.

Luann Dodge has been involved with RMR since the early 1990s when a co-worker encouraged Gary (her husband who died in 2013) to buy the Porsche he had always wanted. Off to Prestige Imports he went, where he purchased a red 914 and joined PCA. “He put it on our credit card – I think it was around $2500,” Luann laughed. Gary’s focus on safety prompted him to convert the 914 to a track car by installing race seats, harnesses, and a roll bar. Gary took the 914 to the track and “trashed it after going off track at Pueblo.” It was replaced with a white 914 and the process of converting it into a track car began all over again.

After much prodding and encouragement from Gary, Luann finally acquiesced and drove her first DE at Pueblo in the white 914. Advice from Luann: “Close your door BEFORE you put your five-point belts on. Duh.” Kathy Fricke, her instructor, buckled in beside her and then asked, “What kind of tires do you have?” Strapped in, a nervous and nauseous Luann responded, “Round.”

Laughing as she recalled her first track day, Luann explained, “I didn’t know the first thing about the car and really didn’t learn until Gary passed. That’s how I got my nickname: ‘Racing Prin-cess!’-- I just got in and drove!” Luann reported that by the end of her first track weekend, she had overcome her nervousness and decided that “this DE stuff could be pretty fun!”

Gary and Luann bought Dave Stribling’s 1980 911 SC race-car in 2008 and raced the car for five years. During that time, they started the charity fundraising that still occurs today during

each track weekend. In 2010 and 2011, inspired by the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure and Luann’s nursing career in oncology, Gary and Luann raised over $5000 for the Foundation at the two October DEs. (2010’s theme was “Titty Titty Bang Bang.” See photo of the t-shirt logo.) Gary and Luann were also the brains behind the Saturday evening dinners at the track. Previously, there were no organized Saturday dinners at HPR during a DE weekend.

After Gary died, Luann sold the racecar and purchased her 1996 993 911, which she could drive to the track (no trailers involved – hello, Racing Princess!) and which she continues to track today. To illustrate the closeness of friendships in the RMR track “family,” Scott Henderson and Cecil Morris were instrumental in helping Luann maintain the 993 and prep it for the track. They helped Luann learn the ropes (like more than round tires) after Gary passed. Later in 2016, Luann bought a 981 Cayman from fellow RMR member Lisa Bryan. She tracked the Cayman a few times, but ultimately decided she prefers the 911. This past fall she traded the Cayman for a 2017 Macan GTS (which she named “The Rocket” because the console looks like mission control and the car drives like one).

The death of RMR member Jerry Schouten following a crash at HPR in August of 2013 during the Club Race motivated Scott and Luann to work together to increase safety preparation at DE and Club Race events. Scott was a paramedic for about 20 years in a “first career.” After serving as RMR Board Secre-tary during 2012-13, he put together the Safety Committee in 2014. He recruited a team of experienced medical/safety mem-bers from the RMR membership. As a member of the Commit-tee, Luann contributes her extensive trauma background from

her career in nursing, as a CPR instructor, and from serving 42 years on the National Ski Patrol. After the crash, Luann recalls there was “an awakening” of the Safety Committee members. “What did we learn?” and “What can we do better?” became the team’s mantras. The result was an improved communication protocol, a readily available trauma bag, and the purchase of an AED. These, and other improvements in safety are currently in use at RMR DE and Club Race events. Another result is that the RMR Safety Committee includes four surgeons (Lisa Hunsicker [plastics], Krista Turner [trauma], Bo Jensen [gastroenterology], and Jack Manon [neurology]), a neurologist (Ernie Nitka) and an engineer (Joe Warren).

Luann and Karen have also taken their turns with co-chairing RMR’s Ladies’ Day. They each have co-chaired the event for two years.

In 2019, a new adventure was brought to Karen, Luann, and Scott. They traveled together to Monte Carlo to see the F1 Mo-naco Grand Prix. The trio had gotten a tip from CDI Dave Strib-ling on where to sit in the grandstands for the best view of the race. Their high grandstand seating allowed them to see a large portion of the course as the cars sped through the spectacular

road course in front of and behind them. (Luann noted that the spectators on the big yachts could only see a tiny portion of the race.) Luann’s favorite part of the race was the start. Karen echoed this, describing the sensory overload at the start: the roar of engines, the smell of race fuel, and the tires screeching. Why did they decide to go to Monaco? Karen said, “Monaco was my idea. My late husband was a huge F1 fan and I had always main-tained I was going to surprise him with tickets to the Monaco Grand Prix one day. Thirteen years ago, he passed away very unexpectedly. As I was approaching a milestone ‘0’ birthday last year and thinking through ‘bucket list’ ideas, I remembered my vow to surprise Damian with Monaco F1 tickets. It took very little salesmanship to convince Scott and Luann to join me in this adventure. It wasn’t until we were seated in the stands that I did the math and it was exactly 20 years prior that Damian and I were in Monaco on our honeymoon. It was an amazing and emotional trip for many, many reasons. It was wonderful to have shared it with two of my dearest friends.”

Three close friends were kind enough to let me into their world. All three became friends through their membership in RMR. Luann, Karen, and Scott have supported and helped each other for many years. They each bring distinctive perspectives to the track community. In addition, they have all made sig-nificant contributions to RMR, each in their own way. Luann Dodge, Karen Harrison, and Scott Henderson demonstrate how all of us can use our individual talents to contribute to the RMR experience.

PAST EVENT : COLORADO CONCOURS EDITOR’S NOTES

Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19)…By this point in time, we’ve heard it all (the mandates and advice!) coming from many (CDC, the President, health gurus,

governors, mayors, county officials, etc.) regarding COVID-19 in doing this and doing that, but not doing this and not doing that! What we’ve been hearing has been up to our eyeballs! But we will overcome, and we have overcome many times before!!! We Americans are a resilient people, and we should be very proud of that fact! So, in order to keep “overcoming,” eat well, get good sleep, and try to obey the many mandates that are piling up so as to always be healthy, wealthy(?), and wise! God Bless Us, Everyone!

New RMR/PCA Members…On Saturday, 7 Mar 2020, we had our yearly New Member Orientation and Social at Denver Auto Shield. I did not at-

tend this year, because, due to COVID-19, I thought, at my age, it was more important for me to stay at home. Apparently, there was a fine turnout of new and well-established RMR members. I hope many of you dropped by the HighGear table to browse and gather up some recent editions of HighGear so as to acquaint yourself with RMR’s newsletter. Of course, I missed a fine opportunity to chat with you and to begin to associate an in-person face with a name I hope to see in my emails. Know that you’ll be impressed by (1) our monthly socials, (2) the quantity and quality of the DEs, driving and touring events RMR has to offer, and (3) the unbridled enthusiasm always shown by the many volunteers who make our Club the great Porsche Club that it is and will always be! So my warm welcome to all the new members of RMR/PCA!

May and June 2020 Online Editions Only…For those of you, new and old members alike, who do not receive RMR eBlasts, allow me to reiterate what was re-

layed to the RMR membership regarding the May and Jun 2020 editions of HighGear. The May and Jun 2020 editions of HighGear and, possibly, beyond will be web-versions only! The RMR Board has taken this step, at this time, to conserve funds during the COVID-19 pandemic. The web version of HighGear will look the same as the usual hardcopy edition, and the edition deadlines will still be the 20th of the month. Also, nothing will be removed from the web-version editions. And you’ll be able to access the May andJune 2020 editions on the website in the same way that you’ve always accessed past editions. Know that when an edition has been uploaded to the website, you’ll be informed within a few hours via eBlasts or Facebook. For those of you who are not that familiar with accessing and maneuvering your way around the website, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] for guidance in accessing and reading the current as well as all past editions of HighGear. The RMR Board will review its position with regard to future online-only editions of HighGear after the publication of the Jun 2020 edition, at which time you’ll hear from me again. In the mean-time, don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] with your opinions regarding online-only vs. hardcopy editions of HighGear.

Getting to Know You…As you get older, the more you reminisce! And during these very difficult and challenging times, it’s, probably, for the

better! I firmly believe that if you meet someone who has something in common with you, you might begin to develop a friendship with that individual, especially if you interact with him/her periodically. PCA and Porsche folks always say, “IT'S NOT JUST THE CARS, IT'S THE PEOPLE.” I’m an extrovert and I like to get to know the people I work with. That’s why I’ve created this list of particulars related to my life that might trigger some of you to contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] so we can chat about things in common totally unrelated to COVID-19!

One Last Thing…• I’d like to bring back a feature that used to be in past editions of HighGear, titled “Show Us Your Car!” Yes, tell us

about you and your family and your car with photos. It could be an amusing incident. An interesting trip. A colorful and/or rewarding experience. You name it! Usually anything that might peak the reader’s interest. Send your article to me at [email protected] or [email protected].

• Finally, my colleague, HighGear’s Creative Director Bill Simon, and I always invite your thoughtful comments, ques-tions, suggestions, etc. regarding each edition of HighGear!

Mark your calendars! The 37th Annual Colorado Concours d'Elegance is coming!

The Concours will be held on June 14th, 2020 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Arapahoe Community College Campus. The proceeds from the Concours will benefit Ability Connection Colorado's Creative Options for Early Childhood Education Centers. These centers provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to over 600 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families each year.

The Concours typically sees over 14,000 spectators, who come out once a year to join car enthusiasts from all over Colorado and many other states who are showcasing over 500 limited production, rare sports and exotic cars.

The Porsche Club typically displays over 70 cars each year from the 356s to brand new cars.

Members of the Porsche Club started this event many years ago, so we always like to put on a great show for spectators by displaying a diverse group of cars.

If this is your first time attending the event, here is some basic information:

There are many ways to be involved in the event:

1) Register your car, 2) Volunteer, 3) Attend as a spectator, or 4) Become a Sponsor.

If you are interested in registering your car in the event, you have a couple of options:

• Display Only – No Judging • Club Judged - Judging based on cleanliness of the interior and exterior

Elite Concours Group - Judging based on a subjective review of each car in the class The Concours Class has been renamed to the Elite Concours Group to avoid confusion.

Registration to enter your car in the show is NOW OPEN at: coloradoconcours.org

The show is fun for all; however we can’t do it without some help. We are looking for volunteers to help with the entrance gate, parking and general help on the field. This is a great way to see the show and spend your day in the Colorado sunshine. Volunteers will also receive free entry, a free poster and free lunch!

Just visit coloradoconcours.org to sign up, be a volunteer or register as a Sponsor.

Sponsorship has many different levels.

Additional information will be provided in future newsletters leading up to the event.

“Hunkered down” is the term I’m hear-ing most. As I write this, my home city, Salt Lake, is the “hot spot” for Coronavi-rus in Utah. Hopefully, we’re entering a plateau in virus cases. Perhaps by the time this monthly letter hits your computer or mailbox, we’ll all be in a phase that has us coming out of hibernation. For now, though, I like the term “couped up.” It sounds the same as being cooped up, but I like the comparison to our car models. You have an extra escape hatch from a Tar-ga or a Cabrio. But a coupe really fits the bill for this semi-voluntary full enclosure with a limited number of doors.

Shortly after the Utah Governor an-nounced our program called “Stay Home, Stay Safe,” and our local mayor put into place even more stringent measures, I got an invitation from a local P-car owner to join him for a morning drive up a local canyon. All official PCA drives had been canceled. And the invitation was to just three others from the immediate neighbor-hood. Feeling cooped up, I jumped on the opportunity. We had an enjoyably, spirit-ed mountain drive, while maintaining our social distances. I referred to it as an an-alog version of a “Zoom” meeting. I even posted it on my personal Facebook page.

After returning home that same day, I began to see a very active email thread among members of my former “pre-retire-ment” region, but not in this zone thank

goodness. The discussion was among PCA members communicating on PCA club mail servers to arrange a similar kind of planned drive as an alternative to an of-ficial PCA activity. While the discussion started small, lots of people chimed in with ideas very quickly. It appeared that the drive may not eventually be contained to a small number of cars. People clear-ly wanted to get out and drive with their

friends. And it took quite some time be-fore one or two PCA members mentioned that, should anyone from the public be into “entitlement shaming,” that the event could bring a lot of embarrassment to members individually, but more likely to Porsche ownership in general. Even then, some members tried to wrap the proposed “non-event” into a charity fund-raiser.

The hospital charity idea was well inten-tioned, but still contained the same public relations risks. So I pointed out this email thread to my counterpart zone rep, who in turn worked with the region President to provide the direction needed to stop the discussion.

That whole situation pointed out that I must own up to some level of hypocrisy in having made my own canyon run earlier in the day. Yes, our group was small. It was VERY local. It was not a PCA event. In fact it was not all Porsches. Nonethe-less, I’ve now declined the invitation for two subsequent Saturday-morning canyon runs and any future runs until our state restrictions are eased. Perhaps, in my role as zone rep for PCA, the negative PR risk would be higher should anything go wrong with our drive. But regardless of my per-sonal profile, in light of all of the challeng-es people are facing in terms of physical, emotional and economic health, I made my own decision that it’s the right thing for me to do. I’ll just have to make up for it as soon as this countdown hits “zero, blast-off.”

Hopefully, I’ll be in your region having fun with lots of you later in the year. Until then…please stay as safe as you can!

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

From deep inside the Corona-sport mechanized newsroom, a team of elves have been working tirelessly to compile the best, the most bizarre, the most barren, and the most brazen events and commentary from the whole wide world of cars and racing, post-virus arrival. I’ve asked the trolls to sort out the life and the death, the timely and the relevant … and irrelevant, and here’s their report.

Bernie Ecclestone. That should be enough. But it’s not. Not by a long shot. In a missive sent from his ranch, north of Sao Paolo, Brazil, where he’s wintering (summering?) the pandemic, the longtime F1 majordomo has announced that he’s about to become a father, again, at 89 ripe years of age.

While you’re pondering that reality, be advised that Bernie has also weighed in on what Formula 1 should do to revive the 2020 season. The wee-one’s thinking? Do more than one race at a time. And do it by reversing direction for the second part of the doubleheader.

Wait, wait! News flash. Bernie has now come out with an update: cancel the entire 2020 season and start fresh next year. And, yes, it’s true, Mad Max Mosley has surfaced in agreement. Will the powers that be follow this sage advice? Hope springs eternal. The question is whether the virus does, too. Some people, and things, just don’t go away.

Sterling Moss. He passed, recently, at 90. I found it interesting that he was characterized, more than once, as the best driver to have never won the Formula 1 World Championship. Yeah, well, on the other hand, one thing I’m truly amazed about is that he merited a full half-page obituary in The Gray Lady, The New York Times. And they called out, and I quote, “In a 14-year career, he won 212 of his 529 races in 107 different types of cars.”

Moss’ greatest win? Come on. If you’re reading this, of course you know the answer. Ok, ok, the Mille Miglia of 1955, in the Mercedes 300 SLR, No.

722 with Denis Jenkinson co-driving. Which is arguably the greatest racing accomplishment of all time.

The Times obit ran a truly memorable quote from Sir Stirling, “To race a car through a turn at maximum possible speed when there is a great lawn to all sides is difficult. But to race a car at maximum speed through a turn when there is a brick wall on one side, and a precipice on the other – ah, that’s an achievement!”

I had a brush with fame with the great one, about 10 years ago, at a concours in Santa Fe, NM, where I think he was being honored. I’m strolling along, admiring the iron, and, out of nowhere comes a golf cart, all wheel-spin and dust, with Moss behind the wheel. Along for the ride are Lady Susie, his wife, and Denise McCluggage, who’s probably worth her own column.

Anyway, Moss, unmistakable in his trademark “britches,” struts up to, if my memory serves me, an English Ford from the ‘50s. I’m luckily within earshot. He looks it over and then engages a man standing proudly by. “Your car?” he says. Uh yes! says the surprised owner. Moss says something to the effect of, “I rallied one in the ‘50s. It was bloody awful.” And, with that, he hops back on the golf cart and broadsides his way into the distance.

The Cannonball Run. Three guys just did it, in 26 hours, 38 minutes, in a 2019 Audi A8. According to one report, they had to average around 106 mph in order to set that time.

I’m laughing at the ensuing commentary. Will it go down as a record with an asterisk? The issue is that, because of our national home-staying, the roads of our great big country are all but empty. There’s a coterie out there saying, “Yes!” On empty roads … that’s cheating!

As if the idea of barreling coast to coast at extra-legal speeds is morally OK. I’m not going there. Instead, I’m harkening back to an interview with another legend, Dan Gurney, who, of course, set the initial

record with Cannonball creator Brock Yates in a Ferrari Daytona in 1972 at 35 hours and change.

Gurney related that, after the race, Kirk White, who owned the Daytona, offered to sell it to him for $15,000. Gurney turned it down. Why? He couldn’t afford it.

Gemballa. Then there’s the tale of Benjamin Chen, who took his Gemballa-t u ned Por sche Ca r re ra GT out on Manhattan streets and … proceeded to slam headfirst into a parked van. Out of boredom? Who knows.

As you might expect, in our modern age, where nothing happens without an ensuing video, there are at least two visual accounts of the whole sordid mess. One shows the accident, pretty much as it happened. And the second shows Chen reversing, his whole front end a mess of frame, suspension and bodywork and trying to actually drive away.

Now, let’s talk about irony. According to a report in Motorauthority, Chen is the founder of the Goldrush Rally, an annual event that “sees car enthusiasts drive and party across several states in the space of a week.”

Police apparently caught up with Chen – judging by the look of the Porsche’s front end he couldn’t have gone very far – and charged him with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

My last ing thought? The sound emanating from the 5.7 liter V-10 as Chen revved the hell out of it, to try to get away, is truly just plain amoral. Like always, it still sounded like a de-tuned Formula 1 motor. Through a smartphone, no less.

That’s all for now. We’ll leave it to the elves, tucked away safely at virus control, to monitor all channels for updates and new news, going forward. In the meantime, stay safe out there! And sane!

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
