Two HEXPOL Compounding campuses were recently honored in the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s 2015 Top Workplaces. HEXPOL Compounding, a leading global provider of elastomer compounds, was among 150 companies cited in the newspaper’s sixth annual list. HEXPOL Compounding LLC (Burton Rubber Processing), located in Burton, made the list for the first time, checking in at ninth place among 50 northeast Ohio mid-size companies. Burton Rubber Processing was founded in 1957 and currently has 204 associates working at the campus.

Gold Key Processing Inc., a HEXPOL Company located in Middlefield, made the list for the third consecutive year among northeast Ohio mid-size companies. Gold Key was founded in 1997 and currently has 178 associates working at the campus.

The 2015 Top 150 Workplaces list was published in the Plain Dealer on June 21. Associates responded to a

detailed survey conducted by independent workplace consultant, Workplace Dynamics. The survey standings were based solely on associate responses of “My Job” and “Organization Health” factors which measured important qualities such as: associate’s connection to the organization, organization’s leadership, company direction, execution of company objectives, importance of associate’s work, career development, work/life balance, associate’s relationships with management, pay and benefits.

Survey results indicated that both HEXPOL campuses are comprised of individuals who feel comfortable with HEXPOL through meaningful work, a vibrant connection with the company, and a strong belief that HEXPOL Compounding is moving in the right direction. HEXPOL leadership provides a clear vision, rigorous daily associate development, and an intentional effort to make sure each associate feels valued.

Associates surveyed indicated their appreciation for the recognition, rewards, and opportunities provided by HEXPOL Compounding. The survey respondents cited a connection to HEXPOL because of the positive culture and the company’s intentional support based in personal and leadership development programs.

Markets Make MemoriesBy Patrick Blau

My daughter, McKenzie, was a student for two years in the Auburn Career Center’s culinary program. In her junior year of high school, the first year that she attended Auburn, the class went on a field trip to the West Side Market. They were encouraged to explore the different booths and vendors, and of course they could buy things to bring home that would, hopefully, promote their interest in the culinary arts. McKenzie brought home a jar of garlic cloves from her expedition into Cleveland’s market zone. My daughter and I absolutely love garlic; roasted, baked, sauteed, minced, powdered, pickled, and any other way that you can prepare garlic, we will love it. All the cloves in Kenzie’s jar were pleasantly white, neatly peeled and ready to be prepared somehow. My daughter was openly proud of her purchase, seeing as how it was a mere $10.

The punch line, you ask? The jar of garlic cloves that Kenzie brought home that day was easily a foot tall and 5 pounds, more garlic than we could eat in three months even if we had all of Burton Lakes over for lunch and dinner every weekend, more than you could choke a horse with. They were good, don’t get me wrong; but they just didn’t have quite the same level of taste that is usually associated with raw garlic. Sometimes, not always but sometimes, we emphasize quantity over quality in America. Living in Septfonds, France for almost seven months now, I am finding that the opposite is true here, although the American/western influence is beginning to be felt in culinary quarters. But for now, the foods that I have enjoyed and sought out in France, and which have helped to expand my waistline by a few inches or more, are completely amazing to me, different to my American palate, and seasoned by French tradition and centuries of gastro-intestinal pride.

Wednesday mornings are special in Septfonds. There is a farmers market that assembles on the town square, directly behind the Catholic church and next to the city hall, surrounded on all other sides by quaint and historic houses. There are old folks who set up simple tables and sell home-grown onions for a small fraction of a Euro, others who sell for only a bit more the eggs their chickens laid that day. There is a vendor of saucisson, which is like a medium sized solid log of beef jerkey, pork jerkey, goat jerkey or duck jerkey that has been totally infused with homemade awesomeness. Next to that there is a travelling butcher who sells any cut of most any animal to wives who are planning the midday meal for their families. Beside the butcher is a young woman selling small wheels of fromage (cheese) that are just the perfect size for this particular American to

eat like a donut as my wife and I walk slowly along the short rows of hawkers. We have nowhere to really go, no time to actually be there; this is just a moment to appreciate the non-industrialness of the scene, a scene which is repeated every morning in most every city and village here in France.

There are bigger markets than the one Septfonds has every Wednesday morning, markets in nearby cities such as Caussade or Saint Antonin or Puylaroque that make the gathering here in Septfonds look like a small town backwoods yard sale. But here we can talk to the saucisson vendor whom I notice is wearing an Arizona Cardinals t-shirt, and learn that he received it as a gift from his sister who lives in America. We can notice the small gestures of give and take between seller and buyer as they come to a mutual agreement on the price of a bundle of green onions. We see the smiling eyes of a busy man who proudly calls,‘’Le suivant, s’il vous plait!‘’ (‘’Next, please!’’ ), because his homemade eggs rolls are infused with almost the same amount of awesomeness as the saucissons, and are a favorite of my wife Sarah. The whole scene feels cozy, familiar, almost ancient and ritualized, something that needs its own channel on cable TV to really be fully appreciated. And almost every Wednesday morning you will find my wife and I there, meandering around with a 10 or 20 Euro budget, just enjoying and soaking in the flavor of life here in Septfonds as much as we can. It’s a long way from Ohio, even longer from Burton/Middlefield, but the feel of it reminds me of the booths that sometimes line the edges of Burton circle. The same familiarity, the same smiles and hellos, the same pleasant exchanges between neighbors known and not yet known. After all, memorable experiences are not about the size, the crowds, ‘the-crazier-the-better’ attitude lots of us Americans embrace. When the day comes that I introduce my wife to Burton, she will recognize the feel of it from these experiences here in Septfonds.

Sarah and I sent two bulbs of French garlic in a package to McKenzie a few months ago. Septfonds garlic is pungent, powerful and perhaps overwhelming to tastebuds that haven’t been introduced to its unique potentcy. But not to me, not to my daughter; we ate close to half of that original jar of garlic cloves that she brought home to Burton that day, so we are both garlic professionals now. The small comparison sample that we sent her was much less than the 5 pounds that she and I tried to eat up before it went bad, and then wondered why everyone stayed at least 3 feet away and upwind from us for a week. But I hope that, like me, she remembered the time, and smiled at the memory.

It takes a lot of work to become one of the elite, but when you reach that status, you are richly awarded.  That is what the Elite Yelp reviewers have come to find out after reaching the preferred status that brought them excitement like a field trip to Geauga County on a perfect Summer Day.

  Elite status is awarded to Yelp reviewers whose routines are to check in at every location they visit and write a clear, interesting, fair, review that shows personality. They also need to be active in the Yelp community by commenting on other reviews, welcoming new reviewers, and a few other interactive chores.  If you look at Yelp reviews Elite reviewers are designated and their reviews are usually toward the top as they carry a little more insight.  As Elites they also get special invitations to highlight different locations and businesses. 

An invitation was extended to them by Geauga County Farm Bureau’s Director Ty Kellogg to visit some of Geauga County’s farms and explore the popularity of the field to fork movement.  A popular topic, as 30 joined the group led by Cleveland Elite Community Manager, Cara Lageson; Farm Bureau Office Administrator Marie Morris; and Destination Geauga executive director, Lynda Nemeth. The group met at Patterson Fruit Farm in Chesterland where they were treated to cider and doughnuts, then boarded a Precious Cargo bus.  Nemeth narrated a tour as they passed the Geauga Fresh Farmers Market in South Russell, and made a stop at Sirna’s Farm & Market in Auburn for a tour of the farm and a little shopping.

  Their lunch stop was a hands-on opportunity to put to use all that they had learned at Sirna’s Farm, as they crafted their own farm fresh pizzas at Sirna’s Pizzeria in Chagrin Falls with all fresh vegetables from the farm and Sirna’s fresh sausage. Although unofficial reviews, many of the group commented it was the best pizza they had ever tasted. This was a very diverse group; don’t forget Yelp covers a wide variety of things so reviewers are singles, families, various ages, races, and with a wide scope of life experiences. After enjoying lunch the group boarded the bus for a little more Geauga County information while enroute to Hastings Dairy Parlor in Burton. Upon arrival they heard from owner Brenda Hastings about the dairy farm, and the recently added Rowdy Cow Creamery and the milk production at the farm. The group then divided for tours to take a wagon ride and see the calves, or to tour the milking parlor and taste the flavored milks produced there.

 Upon completing the tour of Hastings, the group was ready to head back to Patterson’s to retrieve their cars.  While at an event where they receive free admission, goods or food, they cannot do any reviewing. They can only review the Yelp outing, and then visit the locations again on their own as a paying consumer to rate and review. We heard several comments that many would be back, as they had enjoyed their time in Geauga County and learning, first hand, more about where their food comes from. Middlefield Chamber's Open HouseMiddlefield Chamber of Commerce held its second annual Open House on July 14,

2015 at the Chamber's lawn, 16014 E. High Street, Middlefield. The event was open to the community and held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Hot dogs and light refreshments were served Melvino the clown from the Kelly Miller Circus stopped in to entertain, while promoting the upcoming Circus to be held in Middlefield on July 29 and 30.

Middlefield Arcade OpenGame Trek II, a combination arcade, snack bar, and Hershey’s Ice Cream Shake Shop, is

now open to the public. Owner Brian Carrabine said he’s encouraged by the feedback he is receiving from the community and said, “Several people have stopped in to tell me they are happy to see and entertainment facility like this in Middlefield.” The arcade area consists of eight video games spanning from a vintage 1979 Galaga to a 2006 Pump it Up dance game. Also featured is a pool table, foosball table, and a shuffle puck bowling machine. “So far, the bowling game is my favorite," Carrabine said. “It has 43 years of wear and tear on it and I thought about having it refurbished, but I think I will preserve it as is. It would be difficult to replicate the original artwork.”

The snack bar serves a limited menu of hot dogs, soft pretzels, popcorn and soft drinks. “We are new at this, and I didn’t want to overwhelm the staff or myself. We will be adding items to the menu on a weekly basis or so. Soon nachos, pizza, and other items will be available.” At the end of the snack bar visitors will find the “sweet spot” of the facility, the Hershey’s ice cream parlor. “It was a last minute decision to put the ice cream parlor in. When complete, there will be both indoor seating and outdoor seating. We are trying to make it convenient for people who just want to come in, get ice cream, and go on their way.” Sixteen flavors are available in both cups and cones with sundaes and shakes rounding out the list.

Carrabine encourages people to follow his Facebook page, Game Trek II, for updates on games, menus, and specials. Game Trek II is located at 15912 W. High St. in Middlefield.

Soap Box Derby Car on DisplayEnd of the Commons General Store is displaying the original 1960 Grand Champion

Soap Box Derby car donated from winning driver, Allen Frantz, of Bristolville, Ohio. The display features the original 1960 winning derby car along with the checkered flag, photos and memorabilia commemorating this beloved event. Cars competing in a soap box derby race were unpowered and relied completely upon gravity to move. The winning car was sponsored by the North Bloomfield Banking Company and the 1960 Trumbull County Soap Box Derby race was sponsored by the Warren Tribune Chronicle and was one of the most celebrated local events of the era. Following the race, the Warren Tribune Chronicle used the winning derby car for promotions throughout Northeast Ohio.

After winning the 1960 Trumbull County Soap Box Derby, 14 year old Derby King, Allen Frantz, then made it to the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron where drivers from all over the United States competed. During the All American Soapbox Derby’s heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, famous TV and movie stars made guest appearances and, as many as 75,000 people gathered to cheer hundreds of youthful racers and builders, ages 11 through 15, who were the champions of local races.

End of the Commons General Store is Ohio’s oldest general store located at 8719 Route 534 in downtown Mesopotamia (44439). The store has been continuously run as an old fashioned general store for over 170 years, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest operating general stores in the United States. Kenneth and Margaret Schaden purchased the store in 1982 and the family continues to run the business

some of ours. Geauga County Tourism officially began in 1980 when the first bed tax check was allocated to the office to be put toward promoting Geauga County. That means we will be celebrating our 35th Anniversary this year. Watch for details to party later this year.

It seems like only yesterday, but it’s been 8.5 years since I began at the Destination Geauga Office (then Geauga County Tourism) during that time we have undergone huge changes, most recently a rebranding to include a new name and look. With the excellent services of Company 119, we have just launched a new website, and have taken on a new project with the Geauga Barn Quilt Trail.

In the past few years we have won four RUBY (Recognizing Uncommon Brilliance in Your Advertising) Awards from the Ohio Travel Association for our Visitor Guide, our Mobile App, our Social Media, and our previous website. We will be submitting our new website soon, and clearing wall space for RUBY number five.

If you are familiar with the term “100th monkey*” we feel we are just on the precipice. In the past three months our request for visitor information has increased exponentially, not just regionally, or nationally, but internationally. With increases to our reach we are organically achieving roll outs to audiences we have

never reached before. Closer to home we just received an acknowledgment from AAA that “Destination Geauga has reached a level of preferred status with AAA and is now being listed fee-free.”

Our walk in traffic continues to rise, within the past month we have worked with visitors from Japan, Brazil, and a group of 43 farmers from Poland who sought us out and altered their course to make Geauga part of their day. Over the past few years we have logged visitors in our office Guest Book from 43 states, and 34 foreign countries (and those are just the ones that stopped in).

In 2015 we worked with 190 Member businesses and are working toward 200 in 2016. We put 30 of those members on network TV, saw over 700 people on our Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour, published a new magazine about our Amish community, serviced 20 brochure racks throughout the county, printed 30,000 maps, printed 90,000 Visitor Guides, and generated more than $190 million in tourism revenue.

Historical Association. The room is filled with train memorabilia, there is an old cupboard behind the servers which was donated by Rick Roose who used to own Roose’s Drug Store right on Main Street. Mr. Roose also helped to start the Historical Society. The revenue from the soda fountain is used to help support the Middlefield Historical Society, which is located right behind The Depot. The Historical Society has several projects they support such as a Festival of the Trees in December and helping young people from Cardinal High School starting out for college with scholarships every year. The funds are also used to maintain the caboose and the actual historical building. All the workers there are volunteers, so there isn’t a lot of overhead, just a handful of people run it and they could really use your help. As for the ice cream, it’s hand-dipped and I can buy a little toot, a very small cone with one or two little dips, for 75 cents and $1 respectively; just the right size for my little grandchildren. Of course you can also purchase a single or double-dip cone of regular size. They serve some yummy looking sodas and sundaes as well. The flavors are crafted for The Depot and oh so good. You simply must try the Elk Prints

or Turtles and Mud, and I’ve never tasted better Key lime before. There are about 20 flavors in all that change up from time to time, so it’s necessary to stop in often to try something new, or before they run out of your favorite. Stop in some time and ask to blow the whistle. Maybe I’ll see you there. The Depot is located at 14979 S. State Ave. in Middlefield.
