Council joins with Landcare to improve river systemsSouthern Downs Regional Council has joined forces with several Warwick schools and the local landcare group to begin a river bank planting program, which began Monday 9 September.Mayor Cr Peter Blundell said the Warwick Shire River Improvement Trust, SDRC Parks, Condamine Alliance, Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group and the various schools had developed a four week planting program in a co-ordinated approach to stabilise creek banks, improve fish habitat and local amenity."It's wonderful to see Council and various organisations

working together and also instilling environmental messages in our young people."The schools involved are Warwick East State School, Scots PGC, Warwick State High School and Warwick Central State School. Junior landcare members are also participating as part of the Landcare Conference at the end of the month."The planting areas will be on the Condamine River banks, within the town reach, with the school students walking to various sites or in the case of Scots PGC conducting planting in the school grounds where the river passes through."After the September/October school holidays there will also be some plantings with the Killarney School in the Killarney town area," he said.Landcare Support Officer Angela Burrows said the planting program had a whole host of benefits both short and long term."In the short term we are offering local students the opportunity to learn about the river environment that is right on our doorstep. This planting program engages the students, delivering a greater understanding of how the river functions and the value of vegetation on the banks for our native fish.”"In the long term we are creating resilient river systems and involving students in a program that could inspire possible career opportunities," she said.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKAn old man was relaxing at his hundredth birthday party when a reporter went up to him. "Sir, what is the secret

of your long life?"

The man considered this for a moment, then replied, "Every day at 9 PM I have a glass of port. Good for the

heart I've heard."

The reporter replied, "That's ALL?"

The man smiled, "That, and canceling my voyage on the Titanic."

Looking Back…Allora’s Past 25 years ago

September 1988Back to Goomburra

Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, President Mr. Graham Bool said that they were overwhelmed with the attendance of about 1000 people at the “Back to Goomburra Day” on the 17th September. The day began with a parade depicting transport in the district over the years, and was led by the Wickham family’s early model International truck. Other highlights of the day were historical displays by early families in the district, a bus tour of the historical sites conducted by Stuart Acason and the placement of a time capsule by life time Goomburra resident Mr. Laddie Gilmore. Family reunions and reminiscing by old residents of the district were carried on into the evening with a barbeque and old time dance in the hall.

Football Club BanquetTo celebrate the conclusion of a successful season, the Allora Rugby League held a banquet at which a trophy

donated by Mr. Vic Jensen was presented to John Wilson, and Mr. W. M. Holmes, a vice-president, announced his intention of presenting Wilson with a trophy as the outstanding player of the year. Other presentations included a watch to the coach, Colin Laws, and sleeve links and a tie pin to Mr. Dyer, the ambulance bearer.

Allora’s Past 100 years ago September 1913COMMENT

by “The Angel”A lot of dairymen are going about looking for store pigs just now. Young pigs are scarce and several farmers are preparing to import a few truck loads. A great many years ago a similar shortage of young pigs was experienced and one of our

farmers got down a load of wild pigs from Chinchilla. They didn’t do well but you should have seen them at the trough for the first time. Most of those pigs had never seen skim milk before in their lives and the way that they shouldered, shoved and pushed with their arms and legs was a sight to be remembered.

NOTICEI beg to notify the people of the district that I have purchased the Goomburra Butchering Business from Messrs. J & W. M. Holmes and intend to carry on the same on up-to-date lines.I hope thereby to merit a continuation of the support accorded to my predecessors.A. H. Neale The Goomburra Butchery
