2016 AUSTRALASIAN REPORTING AWARDS
IN 1950 A GROUP OF LEADING BUSINESS PEOPLE ESTABLISHED AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN PREPARING ANNUAL REPORTS TO IMPROVE THE STANDARDS OF FINANCIAL REPORTING AND COMMUNICATING WITH STAKEHOLDERS IN AUSTRALIA. THESE AWARDS, NOW KNOWN AS THE AUSTRALASIAN REPORTING AWARDS (ARA) HAVE BEEN PRESENTED EACH YEAR FOR 66 YEARS.
The Awards are administered by Australasian Reporting Awards Limited, an independent not-for-profit organisation run by volunteer professionals from the business, government and not-for profit sectors, with the support of professional bodies concerned with the quality of financial and business reporting.
The Awards provide all organisations that produce an annual report an opportunity to benchmark their annual reports against the ARA criteria which are based on world best practice. In the General Award, Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are presented to recognise the achievement of a high standard.
Competitive Special Awards are presented in specific areas of reporting such as Governance, Sustainability and Work Health & Safety, and for Communication and Integrated Reporting.
THE ARA CONTRIBUTES TO ONGOING IMPROVEMENT IN THE QUALITY OF REPORTING BY:
• Preparing and widely distributing criteria based on world best practice as guidelines for preparing an annual report;
• Conducting an annual seminar on reporting
• Recognising excellence in reporting with Gold Silver and Bronze Awards; and
• Providing constructive feedback to organisations that enter the Awards.
ABOUT THE ARA
ARA OBJECTIVES1. To improve the quality of
annual, sustainability and integrated reporting by organisations in Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
2. To raise awareness among the leaders and managers of organisations of the need for complete, open, honest, transparent and timely disclosure of information to stakeholders.
3. To enable private sector, public sector and not-for-profit organisations in Australia, New Zealand and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region to be highly effective in communicating financial, business and sustainability-related information.
4. To create greater community understanding of the purposes of organisations, about how they operate and the results they achieve.
5. To create greater community awareness of valid and objective measures of organisational performance, and greater understanding of the results an organisation has achieved.
2016 ARA AWARDS 01
SEVERAL YEARS AGO, AS THE CEO OF WMC, A MINING COMPANY WITH WIDESPREAD OPERATIONAL CENTRES, I HAD A VERY PERSONAL INTEREST IN WHAT WAS THEN THE ANNUAL REPORTING AWARDS PROGRAM. I HAD A CLEAR MESSAGE OF IMPORTANCE I WANTED TO BE ABSORBED BY ALL OF THE ENTERPRISE AND THE AWARDS PROVIDED A WAY TO DELIVER IT.
In many companies a message from the CEO is likely to be filed in the waste paper basket. But if the message is delivered in a very public manner it takes on a greater sense of importance. As is often noted, ‘What interests my boss fascinates me’. So the reporting process for which Awards are being presented this evening can serve as much as a management tool for internal communication as it does as the means for formal reporting.
WMC had been a participant in the ARA Awards for some time and its annual report was ranked with Bronze Awards for several years. In 1994 it was clear a change in our internal culture was necessary. Part of achieving this change was to develop a strong commitment to making external declarations about our safety, and our impacts on the environment and the community.
WMC was the first of the mining companies to have an external NGO Committee to examine the work of the company on site and to prepare reports about safety, the environment and the community, and to publish them separately, not just as a page or two in the Annual Report.
From 1995 each site of operations was required to submit its own report and these were collated into the final WMC annual report. This inclusive responsibility was a vital step in delivering the message that accountability for all aspects of operations was something that was non-delegable. This management message became strongly embedded in all of our work activities and the culture of the organisation.
All those involved in delivering the ARA process can take pride in the importance of their contributions to continuous improvement in organisational communication, sustainability and management practices.
Hugh Morgan AC Patron, Australasian Reporting Awards
(Adapted from the comments made by Mr Morgan AC at the 2016 Awards Presentation Dinner.)
[Subsequently WMC Resources Limited received several ARA Gold Awards and won the Report of the Year Award in 2001. Ed.].

PATRON´S MESSAGE
02 2016 ARA AWARDS
CHAIRMAN´S MESSAGE
AS I STEP DOWN AS ARA CHAIRMAN I WISH TO THANK EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED FOR THEIR INTEREST IN, AND INVALUABLE SUPPORT FOR, THE AUSTRALASIAN REPORTING AWARDS.
With the support of the many professional women and men who have generously volunteered their time and expertise to run the organisation, or to judge annual reports, ARA has been able to make significant contributions to improving the quality of reporting since it was first established in 1950 – 66 years ago!
ARA has benefited greatly from various organisations over the years that have generously assisted it as sponsors and supporters.
But the largest group of people responsible for the success of the Australasian Reporting Awards is the people who enter the Awards. Their interest in achieving and maintaining a high standard in reporting is the driving force of the ARA.
ARA is proud of its 66 years of valued service to business, government and not-for-profit organisations. This is a remarkable achievement for a small not-for-profit organisation which would not have been possible if it did not receive so much support from so many.
ARA’s reach has now extended beyond Australia and New Zealand into the Asia Pacific region and recently there have been a number of entries and Award recipients from Hong Kong and Malaysia. ARA seeks to expand its reach into this region.
I am pleased to advise that I leave the ARA in the capable hands of Chairman-elect Professor Suresh Cuganesan FCPA and a board of directors who have extensive business experience. Suresh is a Professor at the University of Sydney School of Business and Deputy CEO of the John Grill Centre for Project Leadership.
Your continuing support would be appreciated.

ALL ABOUT AUDIENCESAnnual Report 2015
THE AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION’S PERSISTENT PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNICATING ABOUT ITS ACTIVITIES HAS BEEN REWARDED WITH RECOGNITION AS THE 2016 REPORT OF THE YEAR.
The ABC has received an ARA Gold Award for its annual report each year since 2004 and was selected as a Finalist for the Report of the Year in 2013 and 2014. No other organisation in the 66 year history of the ARA has received thirteen consecutive Gold Awards.
In accepting the Report of the Year Award, Judith Maude, ABC’s Head of Corporate Governance said, “I am very pleased to accept this Award on behalf of the ABC. We are very proud of our annual report. Many people, including the ABC’s former Managing Director, Mark Scott, worked on this report. It is a significant honour to have our efforts recognised in such a prestigious way.
“Mark was our Managing Director for 10 years, and for almost every one of those years I promised him I would deliver an Annual Report of the Year trophy. I’ll be texting Mark as soon as I sit down.”
“The ABC’s vision is to be the independent home of Australian conversations, culture and stories. The rich
content provided by the ABC helps achieve this vision by making stories and conversations come to life.”
“While I’m not suggesting the ABC’s annual report is as entertaining as Rake — or as controversial as The Chaser — it is an important part of telling the story of the ABC and the vital role it plays in Australian life and culture.”
“The report is the primary mechanism through which the ABC is accountable to the Australian public on its stewardship of public funds. A comprehensive and transparent report of operations and performance is essential to maintain the trust Australians overwhelmingly have in the ABC.”
“The annual report also enables us to report on the stories we tell and the conversations we have with audiences every day — important conversations about topics such as mental health and the issues affecting regional Australia.”
(Judith Maude’s remarks have been edited.)

Integrating work health and safety into all work processes and decisions should be core business.
Annual reports are increasingly seen as a way for investors to find out how organisations manage risk. Good work health and safety performance is an indicator that your business manages its risks well, and is likely to be more productive. Including work health and safety in your annual report can establish your organisation as a leader in this area. Have a look at what the leaders in this field are doing, including this year’s winner the Bureau of Meteorology and last year’s winner the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
