GARLAND NAACP YOUTH COUNCILIMAGE AWARDS

Page 2: Celebrating Excellence “Today's Youth... Tomorrow's Legends

Greetings to the Garland Branch NAACP and Youth Council. This year has brought me a little closer to my hometown. I am looking forward to seeing first-hand the work that the adult and youth members are doing in Garland. Congratulations to the 2014 recipients of the Garland NAACP Image Awards. These awards are a testament to your dedication in your chosen area. Keep working hard in your high school years and beyond. Entering college and careers with a talent or a dream is rare these days, so you are one foot ahead of your peers. With focus and determination, today will be one more stepping stone on your road to success. To the families of the recipients, thank you for raising youth who recognize their purpose. Your support and encour-agement means more than any public recognition and your

presence here today speaks volumes. Keep encouraging your youth to learn and grow. “To know how much there is to know is the beginning of learning to live.”

Best Wishes,Alana Lyons WilliamsonCharter President, Garland Youth Council

Greetings to the Garland Branch NAACP and Youth Council. It is rewarding to see citizens of every age still working together in my hometown giving their time for a greater purpose. My work as a NAACP Youth Council member gave me the confidence and courage to achieve goals in my academic and professional career. Congratulations to the 2012 recipients of the Garland NAACP Image Awards. Your hard work and talents in academics, athletics, and the arts have not gone unnoticed. I hope that you have the commitment and confidence to further your goals and reach your highest potential. With focus and determination, today will be one more stepping stone on your road to success. You know more than I that with every generation of youth come new and challenging obstacles to overcome. I commend you for upholding today’s theme to have Courage and Stand in Spite of Everything. Each one of you has overcome unique challenges to be able

to stand here today. Each one of you will no doubt face many more. Courage is the key to not only face every difficulty but overcome them with grace and dignity. To the families of the recipients, we honor you for your role in fostering the talents and education of your youth. Your support and encouragement mean more than any public recognition and your presence here today speaks volumes. You, too, must have courage to allow your youth to explore their dreams. You must also stand strong and interject wisdom to them along the way. Your family is a team and with your guidance, you will be champions. Your success does not end with you. The success of the future begins with you.“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Alana Lyons WilliamsonCharter President, Garland NAACP Youth Council

Greetings Garland NAACP Youth Council,

With distinct honor and gratitude I bring greetings on behalf of the Texas State Youth & College Division. The NAACP ACT-SO program and Images Awards has identified, enhanced, rewarded and showcased academic and artistic excellence among minority high school students nationwide. We all have the responsibility to embrace our youth and nourish them with encouragement and guidance. The NAACP is the very foundation that helps young students realize their potential.

To the honorees, in reflection, we recognize your hard work and dedication. A special thank you to the parents, volunteers and sponsors of this year’s program. Through your tireless efforts, you have proven your dedication and commitment to the mission of the Association in promoting educational excellence within the communities. Our state youth gives you a true indication of One Nation, One Dream.

Ricky McNeal, Branch Interim PresidentGreetings: Garland NAACP Branch Interim PresidentGreetings,

Wow, another year has passed and we are gathered again to celebrate the service and accomplish-ments of our youth. I would like to welcome each of you to this program where we will acknowledge and confer special recognition to youth in our community. On behalf of the officers, executive committee and members of the NAACP Garland Unit and Youth Council, we extend our highest regards and best wishes to each of you. We have set aside this time and tailored this program for our young people. The late great poet and author Maya Angelou stated, “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But, people will not forget how you made them feel.” With this backdrop, we know that it is important to inspire and encourage each of them. We fully recognize that each one of the individuals being honored this evening is unique and has made a specific impact in our community. Parents, grandparents, relatives, youth directors, and volunteers, I implore you to continue to encour-age, expose and enlighten our youth. The Apostle Paul stated it like this, Wherefore I put thee in remem-brance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands, 2 Timothy 1:6.

I would like to thank our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for endowing these precious young people with abilities and gifts that they have shared and will continue to share with their families, churches, schools, communities and the world. Finally, I request that you join the NAACP and secure a youth membership for your son or daughter to help us make our commu-nity the very best it can be. We would love for you to join us in the fight for equality and justice. America is the greatest country on the planet; however, with you onboard with us she can and will become even greater. Thank you again and we look forward to working with you.

Greetings Garland NAACP Youth Council.

It is my honor to welcome you to the Garland Youth Council Image Awards. We’re happy that you could join us here in Garland. Texas. For decades, the NAACP has embraced a mission and vision of inclusion, a vision that encourages young people to seek their full potential and excel. The NAACP mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, economic, and equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. The shackles of our past have been physically removed; however, we face the shackles that enchain our mind. We avoid the truth because it scares us, or makes us angry, or makes us feel like we don’t know what to do. We can only avoid the truth for so long before it begins to make itself known in even more forceful ways. I encourage you to remember the struggle is not over and it is YOUR MOVEMENT to continue. I thank the leadership of the Garland Youth Council for all your hard work and your determi-nation. The more you know, the more you owe, because you never know what can help your brothers and sisters to grow!

Greetings Garland Youth Council, In the words of the great philosopher Kanye West, “If you have the opportunity to play this game of life, you need to appreciate every moment. A lot of people don`t appreciate the moment until it’s passed”. During the opening plenary session at the 2011 NAACP national convention in Los Angeles, California, Chairman Roslyn Brock set the tone for the remainder of the event as she coined a phrase that was inspired by the movie “The Help.” She recanted time and again that “Courage should NOT skip this generation.” Ironically, in the City of Angels, Governor Edmund Brown stated that in 27 years only 1 school had been built in lieu of the 23 prisons that are occupied by more than 75% of African American and other minorities. Though many of the young people today have in fact slipped through the moral and civil cracks of society, as an entity we should join together to help in rebuilding the future of America and the world. We can make a difference. As proud members of the NAACP we are held to a standard to lead our peers and others towards the way of success. In conjunction with Chairman Brock we should not, as youth of the NAACP, let courage

skip this generation by allowing the opportunity for positive change to pass. We should usher in an era of courageousness by appreciating and thriving on the precious moments and opportunities that are laid before us. The choice is yours. Kanye, a.k.a “Mr. ‘Yeezy taught me’ West,” couldn’t have put it better saying that we could either “…let these dream killers (the stereotypes) kill [our] self esteem-or use [our] arrogance as steam to power [our] dreams!” NAACP youth, adults, and Image award recipients, I challenge you to NOT LET COURAGE SKIP THIS GENERATION.

Thank YOU,Erin Gaddis, President NAACP Youth Council (2010-2011; 2011-2012)

ReflectionsIn the summer of 1998, the Garland Branch NAACP began recruiting and organizing a new youth council. On October 17, 1998, the Garland Branch NAACP Youth Council received their official charter. The council included more than 25 members, including President Alana Lyons, Vice President Ade Adeyemi, Treasurer Andrea Lyons, Secretary Jackie Barnett, Parliamentarian Reuben Griffin, and Sargeant-at-Arms Jonathan Miller. By the fall of 1999, membership had grown to more than forty students from all area high schools and several middle schools.

AccomplishmentsThe Garland NAACP Youth Council was founded in 1998 by a group of teens led by founding President, Alana Lyons Williams ( 1999 Naaman Forest High School graduate, Garland ISD). The organization was chartered by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and its membership is open to children and youth ages 1 through 18. The organization addresses civil rights issues as they relate to youth in five areas: Juvenile Justice, Economic Em-powerment, Education, Political Action (Voter Empowerment), and Health. Over the years, the Garland Youth Council has planned, sponsored and co-sponsored activities for youth addressing voter registration, college tours, college fairs, scholarship and resume writing workshops, educa-tion forums, SAT Preparation Workshops, Street Justice and the Law, Careers, and the annual Garland Branch NAACP health fairs which joins with other organizations in providing back packs and immunizations for hundreds of citizens. The Youth Council also has been selected to implement national initiatives such as the National Day of College Preparation and the Young, Black and Secure interactive game designed to teach middle school and high school students about social security.

The activities of the Youth Council also includes attendance at the quarterly board meetings of the Texas State Conference Youth and College Division, attendance at the annual Texas State Conference in October, the Regional Conference held in March and the NAACP national con-vention which will be held in Orlando, Florida in July. Attendance at the national convention affords the youth opportunities to meet face to face national leaders such as Roland Martin, Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond, Medgar Evers’ wife, Merlie Evers-Williams, Judge Greg Mathis, Astro, a young rapper. Locally, the Youth Council annually participates in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade and youth extravaganza activities, the annual Black History Program for the community, political forums, and the Garland NAACP Branch health fair held in August of each year. Volun-teering at the North Dallas Food Bank was one of the many community service activities of the Youth Council this year.

Over the years, the Youth Council has been awarded numerous honors. The Youth Council re-ceived the Southwestern Region Youth Council of the Year Award in 2009 and the Texas State Conference Juanita Craft Youth Council of the Year Award in 2011 and 2012. The Youth Advisor, Dr. Joyce Miller, has been awarded the Regional Clara Luper Award for Advisor of the Year in 2005, 2007, and 2012. During the 2012 NAACP National Convention in Houston, the Garland Youth Council was selected as the National Youth Council of the Year. In addition, the 2011-2012 Youth Council President, Erin Gaddis, was awarded the NAACP Glouster B. Current Award for Region VI which consists of Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

This year, the Youth Council has gotten off to a great start with the SAT Preparation Workshop held in October at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church and the Let’s Move Activities for approximately 50 children in April. Tonight’s celebration marks our 9th year for the Image Award Ceremony, and is one of the Council’s signature events. The purpose of the Image Award is to recognize chil-dren and youth who have excelled academically, artistically, athletically, and in the area of lead-ership in school, in the community and religious institutions. Over the years, approximately 900 awards have been made to some of the best and brightest youth the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex has to offer. The youth are selected for the award by members of the NAACP, educators, pastors and other adults who work with youth. Youth from Duncanville, Lancaster, Wylie, Garland and the DFW community receive the award at a formal program which includes performances by ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics) Gold Medalists. Adults interested in nominating individual youth and youth groups are invited to join us in encouraging youth who deserve to receive the Image Award.

Membership in the Garland NAACP Youth Council is open to any youth who is interested in de-veloping civic leadership skills; meetings are held the 1st Saturday of each month. For additional information contact Joyce Miller, [email protected]. We thank you for joining us this evening. You are invited to sit back, relax and join us as we encourage our youth to soar to even greater heights.
