President’s DiaryHello Members,Well we are now well and truly into spring-time – perfect motoring weather! Our Au-gust meeting had two brilliant highlights – Dave Hume showcasing his recently re-stored 1901 Locomobile (steam powered) and the pleasurable task of awarding Alex Kirkwood his life membership award. Alex was away during the AGM but it was de-

lightful to present him his well deserved award with his family and fellow members present. Alex continues to add to his outstanding service to the club as our current Secretary, as well as a key fig-ure in the operation of the new restorations shed, and many other activities – well done Alex!

As many of you would be aware, the last AGM saw the new structure of our Executive Committee implemented as per our revised Constitution. One of the major changes is that mem-bership to the committee involves all members having a portfolio of responsibilities, as well as our ongoing officer roles. Whilst Branches and Sections no longer have a member each on the committee, there will be a committee member who will have di-rect responsibility to raise any queries or discussion points that any branch or section has, and to follow it through. The im-portant point though is that any member who would like to con-tribute to the running of the club, or has any suggestions, the committee always welcomes input. If you aren’t sure who to con-tact, get in touch with our Secretary (Alex) who will make sure that your communication gets through to the right people, and is tabled. Remember, we are all volunteers and some of us work full time (including me). We all believe in this club and give our time to make it continually better.

October sees a very important moment for our club as the new Restoration facility opens and is our open day. This

marks an historic day for our club which adds to the uniqueness of our member offering, and really increases our key role in the preservation of automotive history in this state. There are adver-tisements for the day in this edition, please come and get in-volved. I am incredibly proud of what we as a state wide move-ment collectively achieve and we need to celebrate our role.

Ok members, its time to get your vehicles polished, bat-teries charged, and check the roadworthiness of your vehicles. After such a wet winter its time to get those wheels turning!

Have a great spring and I’ll see you on the roads.

Pres Tony

All Members, Branches and Sections are invited to the Wattle Grove Clubrooms on

The Mystery Run

10 year old Ashton asked “Where are we going today?” “It’s a mystery,” I replied. “Huh?” Yes, folks it’s a mystery run. We were parked at the Servo putting some fuel

in Gertrude cos if you don’t know where you are going or how far, then you need a full tank of petrol. Just in case. Ashton looked around. “There’s a lady and she’s looking at us.” Says me, “She’s probably thinking that her uncle had an old car like this years ago.”“Yeah. Like 70 years ago……” “No….. Gertrude is not that old. She is only turning 69 this year.”We laughed.

The drivers meeting was held at Ravenswood. We were given our sheet for the first leg of the journey. “You’re pulling my leg,” says a voice, but Jenny was busy and didn’t hear the humour, just the interruption.

We travelled without worry toward the hills. As we turned into Scarp Road, there was a row of Vintage cars parked up. A muffler has fallen off. Everyone needed to see and offer advice. Back on the road, a gravel road, quite well maintained but with tight corners and a few small potholes from the recent rains. We passed a beautiful rock formation on the left. Unfortunately, we didn’t see its smaller counter-part in the middle of the road. We bumped and bounced over it. Gertrude did us proud. No problems.

Oakley Dam was the destination for the first leg of the run and was beautiful. The cuppa was warming and food enticing. We walked along the path, manoeuvring around a large puddle that covered the path. We reached the dam wall. It was suggested that we try to walk on water. Ten year old Ashton was keen to try. All the jokes came out of the bag. “I heard a crash and then a splash,….” More instructions. We were back on the road on the next leg.

We needed to find the underground structure at Pin-jarra Shopping Centre. Being new to the area, we parked up and went inside. Yes, this shopping centre has an under-ground carpark. Surely this is the answer. But the correct an-swer turned out to be ‘Subway’. I don’t think so……. I will put in a protest with the organisers. Mmmmm. I don’t like to be wrong.

We were last after our stop at the shopping centre but were travelling along quite nicely down the country road when we saw a row of vintages lined up on the side. It ap-peared as though everyone had stopped to pat the farmers cows as there were many standing at his fence looking at us trying to straddle the spoon drain to get to them. But no, the Morris has a flat tyre. Once again, everyone needed to see and offer advice. The cows also, had come across the pad-dock to see what all the commotion was about. Just an added bonus to the day really.

Next stop was carpark (and toilet) on the side of the Forest Highway some where near Lake Clifton. The last set of instructions led us to the Dawesville Foreshore Reserve for lunch.

Oh, I nearly forgot. The Morris has two more flat tyres. I’m not sure but I think it got trailered home.

All in all, a great day out. Special thanks to Dennis who took Ashton and Eliza in his Buick. They had a wonderful time. I’m glad to hear they were helpful with navigating.

If you missed this run, be at the next one. Lots of fun and laughter and always some one to look out for you if you have problems.

Cheers from Di.

Mundijong FairNine vintage cars from Peel Section were at the Mundijong

Fair on Saturday 11 August. Estelle and John took the FJ” after the ”Franklin” disgraced itself by having a flat tyre. The latter noticed just when they were to leave home. So much for all the cleaning and fuelling up to get it ready. All to no avail.

The weather was good, plenty of good stalls and the coffee was also great. It was pleasing that there was much interest in the cars.

The “railroad” runs through the middle of the town and the fair was saluted by a toot from every engine that passed through.

Of great interest was the sheepdog herding. Several sheep ran all through the crowd, with only the shepherd to guide it with his whistle. Judy and Estelle wanted to have a ride on the camel train, but were not brave enough to try. Maybe next time.

Cheers Estelle Bosich.

DONNYBROOK DRIVINGS

Donnybrook branch was busy (out and about) during August. Saturday 18th, Mem-bers travelled to the Nannup Tulip and Gar-

den Festival displaying our vehicles together with other car clubs. Members took a shuttle bus to visit three out of town open gardens.

One exhibition had a pendulum wooden clock which stood four to five metres high. On completion it will be mounted in an enclosed structure in the main street of Nan-nup. It was truly a work of art and must be seen to believe what a master piece it is.Along the main street, tulips, which were displayed in large planter boxes, made a spectacular display of colour. Nan-nup carried a real carnival atmosphere with many stalls in-cluding art and crafts on display.

Sunday 19th August, Donnybrook branch was invit-ed to visit Collie branch for the day. On arrival, the Collie club supplied morning tea for us and after some comradery, we all left to visit Ian Guppy’s Panel Shop. The workshop was immaculate and fitted with all modern-day technology. This business was very professional and we observed their way to vehicles coming and leaving the paint shop. Thank you, Collie branch for an enjoyable visit.

Sunday 26th August, we visited the South West Railway and Heritage Centre in Boyanup. Our vehicles to-gether with the South West Veteran Car Club made a great display. It was very interesting to learn the railway’s history of over the years. On display were model railways, a blacksmith’s shop opened and in operation, the Men’s Shed was open and a great display of old stationary motors. Great weather, great displays and catching up with fellow members, what more could you ask for!

Father’s Day, Sunday 2nd September, our branch is celebrating Father’s Day at the Donnybrook Snack Shack where we will run our meeting whilst the staff prepare our breakfasts and coffee/tea. If it is anything like last year, it will be an enjoyable morning.

Just to remind any VCC members visiting our way that our Donnybrook branch meets on the first Sunday of each month at the St John Ambulance Centre commencing at 10am. New members are welcome, further information about club activities can be obtained by phoning Doug Bish-op on 9731 2998.

Until our next Donnybrook Driving’s news, drive with care.

An afternoon run on Sunday August 26th

was taken up by 18 of our members who enjoyed a short drive for dev-onshire tea at the Sandalwood facto-ry. There was, of course, opportunity to view and purchase any of articles on display in the shop which included different oils, perfumes, soaps plus a host of other sandalwood related products. The weather looked a bit dodgy however the day turned out OK which was a bonus for the few who took their older cars on the run. Thanks to Jenny Sinclair for filling the void on the events calendar and making good an opportunity for mem-bers to take the cars out.

The next run on Sunday September 30 will be hosted by Christine and myself. Normally the monthly outing is on the fourth Sunday of the month however this has been deferred by one week to avoid the long weekend for the Queen’s Birthday on Monday 24th. It also provides a gap and free weekend from the last event at the club rooms on September 15. While we would have liked to put on a rally, we don’t have the time to put it all together at present so the run on the 30th will simply be a pie run to Mount Barker – no route sheet, no ques-tions, no hassles. For members who would like to take the car for a drive, please meet at the club rooms at 10.30am for 11am start. The intention is to go to Mount Barker via Woogenellup Road, have lunch at the old railway station carpark on Albany Highway around 12 noon then return home via Mount Barker-Denmark Road to Narrikup then south along Albany Highway, a round trip of about 160 kilometres. For those in Mount Barker or Kendenup, you could join in near the Woogy hall or somewhere along the way and Denmark members could meet at Mount Barker otherwise you are welcome to start from Albany if you want the extra miles. It’s up to you. Simon Keast provides the following information for the Tusker Run in October: TUSKER BRIDGES COUNTRY RUN Sunday 28 October – 9.30am Due South Car Park, Albany Foreshore The event is a non-competitive run providing a scenic tour that incorpo-rates the bridges spanning both King and Kalgan Rivers.During the drive on open bitumen roads, the emphasis will remain on the cars and their Drivers/Navigators to supply a spotlight on Vintage, Post Vintage, Classic and more modern cars. Appropriate attire is requested.

The Director of the run encourages this active participation from the entrants that brings about the regard that they have for their cars and the Club. A stopover has been arranged at WIGNALL’S Winery - 448 Chester Pass Road - to provide a display of the vehicles and have a coffee break with coffee/tea supplied at no charge. Additionally ROB WIG-NALL has kindly agreed to explain to entrants the intricacies of his wines and showcase his wine cellar. Whilst at the Winery it is hoped to present the display of vehicles to some members of Albany Probus Clubs to give them an appreciation of our range of Classic Cars of Yester Year. The return journey to the VCC Albany Branch Club premises for BYO lunch will conclude this run. The total distance is ap-prox60kms. The charge is $10.00 per vehicle and ALL club members are encour-aged to participate in order to provide a car demonstration of some scale and contrast over 75 years of motoring. Thanks Simon and we look forward to solid member support in recognition of Simon’s effort with organizing this event. Hopefully a fine spring day will be on our side which should make for an interesting event. By now you will probably have heard that the date for the De-cember meeting which includes the Christmas function is now planned for Sunday December 9th – deferred by one week to overcome a clash with another event being held on Sunday 2nd…Cars and Coffee on the foreshore, if I remember correctly. There’s a bit of time yet to finalize the detail but the general outline will be a catered lunch at the club rooms with the meeting to follow. The cost will likely be similar to last year i.e. around $15 per person but will be confirmed closer to the time.

The next general meeting will be held on Sunday October 14th at the club rooms starting with BYO lunch at 12.30pm. Weather permitting, a drive to somewhere afterwards is a possibility – it’s a pop-ular spot that one, as we all seem to go there from time to time.

Now for a little bit of housekeeping...if you are the owners of the following [part] email addresses and wish to remain on the club mailing list please can you respond to me with your correct email ad-dress as the ones I have been given are incorrect and messages con-tinue to be returned to me? If I don’t get a response by September 30, these listings will be deleted (1) nindawarri; (2) carmen; (3) pcolmer; (4) jjte5253; (5) gardf@lincolns; (6) shaylor. My email address is at the foot of this article but please note that unless you are using the active link, which is a bit impossible on hardcopy, don’t include the ‘mailto:’ bit otherwise you will not succeed, but you probably knew that anyway. …and that’s about it for this month.Graham Wright mailto:[email protected]

Well here we are again back from holidays and back into action. Half the club has been touring in one way or the other either in Australia or the world, must be all back shortly. Last month we did not have a feature but hopefully we will this month.

Our first meeting in August managed 25 people in at-tendance with apologies from 20 so not a bad effort, although we did have 91 members at one stage, so really should be a lot more in attendance. Unfortunately some members did not renew their memberships and will have had a reminder in the mail and also email. Hopefully those people on concessional licenses have all renewed otherwise your ca r will be deemed unlicensed.

On 19th August we had 10 members with cars to ac-commodate the RED HATTERS event that was organised by Merle and Jude. After a scrumptious morning tea the club mem-bers took the red hat ladies for a drive in their cars. This event was extremely popular with the ladies and I am sure next time there will be many more red hatters. .Some ladies dressed ac-cordingly to match the era of the cars.

Our last event was the Sunday run, glorious day sitting at about 25 degrees we managed to get 15 cars in attendance. It was great to see Andy Beaton in his Ford which he has fully re-stored himself, it has taken a long time and even more dollars to bring this car to the glorious car we see today Hopefully we will have a story in a few weeks, I actually saw this car at different stages during the restoration as Andy was our former treasurer. Nice also to see AAron and Dominique Woosnam and their two little children in their ford enjoying the run so much it put the kids to sleep. As we had quite a few muscle cars join us on our run it was decided to go a little further than just around town and let the cars use their accelerators instead of the clutch. This proved to be very popular. There’s some other restorations happening at the moment hope I can get a story on these for future editions.

After our run which was about 30 ks we detoured to visit the local Mermaid Leather factory. I am ashamed to say I have lived in Esperance most of my life and never been to this tourist attraction. It seemed to be the go for a lot of people. I found it very interesting after watching a short video on the workings of the fish leather and how they create the items in shop that they actually sell.. Well worth a visit if you are in Esperance.

Some of our members are heading to Newdegate Field day in September and to Ravensthorpe for the wildflower festival so should have pictures for that next month.

Cheers for now Merleygirl

Busselton Briefs

August has proven to be anoth-er busy month on the Events Calendar. This month’s mid week ran set off from Rotary Park where 9 intrepid travellers braved the weather and ventured along Vasse Highway to Nannup, where they met up with 9 fellow Members to enjoy morning tea. Hot soup would have been the order of the day as the temperature only managed to get to 6deg C. After re-freshments, everyone continued on via Mowen Road, Sues Road and Brockman Highway to the lunch venue at the hotel in Augusta. The restaurant has to have one of the best views in the area and as usual, a very nice meal was enjoyed by all. As a special bonus, the Hotel have offered the Club a special menu discount for $20 per head. Now that’s a good deal.

The General Meeting took place on the 12th and was followed by a hastily plotted scenic run through the country-side to end up at the Amelia Park Tavern in Vasse. The re-cently restored venue is quite a pleasant place to visit. 12 Members in 7 cars attended and a good time was enjoyed by all.

18th and 19th August were the dates of the annual Nan-nup Flower Festival. This event has been growing in populari-ty for the last few years and, as always, the Club had vehicles on display for both days. There were some concerns about the inclement weather leading up to the event, however, the “rain gods” were very kind and turned on some beautiful spring weather for both days. All who attended had a good time and lots of interest was shown in the vehicles on display. A big thank you to all who took part.

26th August was the open day at the Boyanup Rail Heritage Museum. Once again, the weather was kind and the Members who made the effort to attend reported that it was a very interesting day.

On the evening of the 29th, the Club were approached by the local Bunnings store to take part in a small display to celebrate Fathers Day. We attended with 3 Members cars who should be commended for braving the diabolical weath-er.

Still on the Fathers Day theme, the Club took part in a display at Cape Care, Ray Village on Thursday 30th. The residents really enjoyed getting up close to the vehicles on display and, as always, were very happy that we had attend-ed. 6 Members in 5 cars and 1 motorcycle took part in the display.

COMING EVENTSSaturday 2nd September. Fathers DayThursday 6th September. Mid Week Run. This month Mem-bers will be visiting Williams.Sunday 9th September. General Meeting with run afterwards to Yallingup.Wednesday 12th September. Visit by National Aston Martin Clubs.Sunday 16th September. Fennessey Rally organised by Mari-lyn and Trevor Bennett.Wednesday 26th September. Ladies lunch at Sensations.

Collie CapersOn a bright, sunny winter’s day Donny-brook branch members joined us for morning tea after our monthly meet-ing. They were very envious of our club rooms, especially after seeing photos of what it looked like nearly thirty years ago! We all then travelled in convoy up to the Light Industrial Area to visit Ian Guppy and Co’s panel and paint workshop. One Donnybrook member, who will remain nameless, got slightly lost in his vintage Plymouth and had to be rescued. Sausages and onions were already sizzling on the BBQ when we arrived so the tour was postponed whilst we all tucked in. Peter, Doug and crew gave us an interesting insight into the workings of a panel and paint shop. Everyone was most impressed with the state of the art equipment and the organisation and cleanliness of the premis-es. They also generously contributed to our monthly raffle (won by a Donnybrook member) with proceeds going to the Motor Neu-ron Disease Association of WA. Thank you to Peter, Doug and crew.

Two of our members are already on their way across the Nullarbor to South Australia in their 1928 Model A ute towing a camper trailer. Wayne and Anne Millman are going to take part in the Bay to Birdwood Rally in Adelaide and they will also attend the 90th Anniversary Rally for Model As at Murray Bridge. Along the way they will be raising funds for MNDAWA. To chart their progress and maybe make a donation google chal-lengeeventsmndawa.everydayhero.com/au/wayne. So far the weather has been atrocious, so we all hope that it improves. Sue and Neville Swindle are setting off later in their 1929 Model A to also take part. Safe travels to all and no speeding!

Until next month,Roving Reporter Rex

Eastern Goldfields Notes

XR Falcon in Progress.MANY kilometres

have passed with trips over east and a recent visit from a Damian O’Doherty from

Ballarat, that person ‘that’ sold me the Jalopy in the form of a 1918 Studebaker Light 4 in 2015. Damian is a member of the Veteran Car Club in Ballarat. Somewhere in the paper-work, Damian indicated the month of manufacture is Octo-ber. When back in Kalgoorlie I will have to go thru what I received at the time of purchase. The date is not on the Certificate of Authenticity, perhaps the chassis number could be the key. On the way to Golden Bay to collect some ‘stuff’, Damian stopped over in Kalgoorlie for a de-served break from driving on Saturday, Sunday a visit to the Gallo’s to see the Overland’s progress and to talk about old cars. Then onto Paynter’s to see Geoff’s Ford AC and some motor bikes. Something as modern as my classic Fairmont is called an easy-mobile by Damian - People who buy classics, may purchase a second car which is usually older, vintage or veteran which helps to keep the old car movement alive. “says Ked”.

After travelling to Golden Bay to collect boxes of Delage stuff to complement the Delage car he has in Balla-rat, we caught up with Damian in Esperance. A trip to the Sunday markets – no car stuff, then a round trip to Stone-henge to compare the original in England, the rocks are really quite good and then onto Lucky Bay was in order. To top of his visit, out to the Esperance branch to meet some of the members there, I love Anthony’s model cars. A photo showing the trailer load of car bits along with Damian and the supervising dog Meika. This vehicle will of course add to Damian’s collection.

The Goldfields branch decided to join the Kam-balda Flounders club in Kambalda at the end of July. Being so late in the month, I am including the members car that attended this month. We may get a couple of new mem-bers from this meeting, the original XP Falcon could be one. Those at the meet, Paul B 67 MGBGT, Alex G 27 Es-sex, Steve D 67 Cadillac, Graham D FJ Holden, Garth I 64 EH Holden, Stephan K Valiant Ute, Eddie M Riley, Steve G HD Holden, Andy W Camaro, Barry W MG TC, XP Falcon. Other cars were Gt Falcons, LX Toranas, EH Holdens, Al Camino ute, modern Holden utes and a Mustang. See pho-tos of members cars. As per usual, the service from the K F Club was good – well done. Without the Fairmont, Gwen-da and Kevin Escaped. (Her new shopping trolley)

At the August meeting, Rocker Cover racing was to be discussed but held over to the next meeting - I won-der what the mechanics amongst us will build as racers. And I’m sure Steve will organise another round the town event for September. It will be to or past the murals that have been painted on building walls in town, Paul B has indicated he may take the photos and we will end up some-where for lunch. Can’t wait.

Next meeting it is planned to show some DVD’s of an event Graham Duncan attended and Steve Dawson who at a meet in NZ (New Zealand) where an estimate of 3000 cars turned out. Just over 12 months to the events in Kalgoorlie / Boulder and the return to Perkolili in Septem-ber 2019.

Until another, K Ed. Goldfields.

Warren Blackwood’s

Doings

There was plenty to keep the members of Warren Black-wood busy in the month of August with our regular annual trip to the Nannup Flower and Garden Festival.

A dozen or so of us made the trip on the Saturday and found that there were several other branches that had the same idea. It turned out to be a great chance to meet up with like minded people from Donnybrook, Busselton and Nannup areas.

The flower show organisers had done a great job this year and there was a well organised bus tour at a budget cost of $3.00 to take people to some of the further flung open gardens set in the pristine countryside surround-ing Nannup.

A further plus was an interesting and informative visit to a local woodworker who has built a full sized Clock that is to be installed in a clock tower in the town centre

The timber made up for the clock mechanism had to be precision cut to ensure absolute accuracy in order that the clock keeps correct time. Just the works are a work of art.

Friday 24th saw another turn out of cars to Boyup Brook in order to help publicise a visit by the Melbourne Cup. Boyup Brook is the only other centre in WA, apart from Perth, to host the cup on its international journey prior to the running of the race in November.

Melbourne Cup Day is also the day that the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society stages the Dinninup Show, another event that we always attend that is a great day out with our cars.

Finally, Sunday 26th saw a few members make the trip on a beautiful spring like day to take part in a display at the Boyanup Railway and Heritage Centre, another excel-lent place to visit at any time.

Regards, Chris Marler

TT Ford notesThe weather should be on the way for improvement the rain should be less frequent and temperatures on the rise, so it is time to get the old cars out and about soon. For us it time to ready for the Vet-

eran Rally at Forbes NSW. I am getting a T Ford ready for the Field days late August and a T Ford for a display on Father’s Day at Mukinbudin. We won’t be at the T Ford Signature Run due to being at Forbes but after-wards we plan to be at the veteran run at Myalup and with the T Fords at Whiteman Park.

The 1911 T Ford has been a bit of a trial tuning up the steering geometry and the engine. The engine was hesitating under power, one way I use is to check that compression is equal on all cylinders then I get a car that is running sweetly then swap components until I find a response. It doesn’t always work, I went through every-thing plugs, coils and timer and it was still hesitating and loosing power at full throttle but I did find a clue, when I changed the plugs I noticed the front plugs were quite sooty compared with the plugs in cylinders 3 &4 so I thought there must be a different fuel mixture front and rear, and the only way this could happen is via the inlet manifold cylinders 1&2 are fed by a different port to 3&4 so I took it off to check for leaks. The manifold was good, so the gasket was suspect I fixed that, and I had found the trouble.

I have decided to have electric head lights on the 1911 T Ford there has been so much controversy about carbide some now say it is hazardous but no more than petrol but getting the carbide has persuaded me it’s too hard for me to find. I found some tiny LEDs about the size of a carbide flame and they are warm white so look like gas lights.

Another tip I found over the years was spark plugs, to buy new ones to fit veterans is expensive I have tried adapters for modern 14 mm plugs but there is too little space around the porcelain for the combustion products of the old veterans. My solution is to use old take apart spark plugs and then get the porcelain out of a 14mm plug by removing the crimp. Then get copper washers of the correct size and countersink them with a tapered punch and tighten them in the old plugs. That gives plen-ty of space for buildup of combustion products and makes them easy to clean. If anyone wants details of the modern plug and copper washer size contact me, and if anyone has old half inch b.s.p. taper thread spark plugs I could do with some I have 6 Fords tractors and cars use the same spark plugs. York Rally Round Up

The highly competitive 2018 York Rally dawned on a sunny, cool and frosty morning to 60 strong hearted intrepid competitors with several new members & G Ellis's granddaughter joining the York Rally. Enthusiasts in 23 classic vehicles, 2 moderns and the back up team came from as far away as Geraldton, Kalgoorlie and Manjimup.

The day started around 8am with the traditional settle your debt to YRC (York Rally Committee), raisin toast, tea and coffee with reminiscing meeting new rally groups and catching up with old friends, as York Rally was rested as priority was given to Ral-ly West in 2017. Clutching the traditional Rally Pack, loaded with expensive goodies with thanks to the Salters for a last minute Rally pack additions, and their route sheet in hand the normal pre rally briefing of how to read directions as we had a few new members who had not rallied before, where and how cryptic questions were set on route what they can expect today.

First car away at 9am was Ross & Ron Payne driving their mothers 1923 Essex and over the next 25 minutes cars departed at 1 minute intervals. After crossing Tonkin Highway the first of the cryptic questions started, with some surprising responses. Rally committee when marking the questionnaires quickly identi-fied that approx half the competitors needed go back and redo their drivers licence as the could interpret a standard road sign with a motor cycle and parallel wavy lines underneath and the others need to return back to grade 3 and learn what a vowel and a consonant is. The rally weave its way thru traditional back roads of Kalamunda, Mundaring Weir Road, thru Stoneville to

Gidgegannup. Arriving at Museum of Pubs, members were met Garth Irvin Kalgoorlie who willingly accepted their question sheet with almost as many cryptic answers, and entered their time of arrival. Yes Barry there was a timed section as you did ask. At Museum of Pubs our host Steve and Janet provide us with morn-ing tea and guided tour of the museum which has an extensive collection of beer and brewery memorabilia, cans, mirrors, signs, even a full length Pub Bar with taps that was save from the dem-olition team. Members were surprised as the size of the extensive collection, the knowledge Steve & Janet have about beer and beer manufacturers. Similar to us and our cars Janet spoke of their "Obsession" with their collection and it should be displayed and not kept in boxes. We are the same get the car out of the shed and on the road where it can be seen. Even more surprising Steve and Janet do not drink beer. Janet our host bravely put up her hand, to do the judging for the best couple attired related to the age of their car and highly entertained us as she did even donating beer related prizes to the winners. Hours later exiting the museum we rallied up to Toodyay for a late lunch and a few exploring antique shops, Conner Museum and the "Christmas Shop" where I hear several persons left the shop a little lighter in the hip pocket.

Mid afternoon we cranked the old cars into life and mo-tored thru Clackline and Spencers Brook to York. All farmers should be are please this year as all dams are full, wheat, oats and canola crops are on their way to a bumper season. Rally technically finished at the Flour Mill Cafe. That evening we dined at the Castle Bistro Bar on a lavish meal & wine till the late hours. The banter and laughter drowned out the catering staff as they weaved in and out of us serving our meals.

During the evening Drivers and navigators were presented with a "Certificate of Participation" and the following received prize packs for the following:Best Dress Kevin & Karyn Salter First Entry Tony & Lesley Gibbs Neatest Entry Margaret Hatch Oldest Car Ross & Ron Payne 1923 Essex Question Quiz Mark & Margaret HatchTimed Section Richard WhiteheadBest Hat FM Lesley Gibbs Best Hat M Terry Sellner1920 Car Rod Henley 1930 Car Mark Hatch1950 Car Ian Baxter 1960 Car Kevin Salter1970 Car Barry Peterkin 1980 Car Ian BainYork Rally winner Karyn & Kevin SalterSunday's weather proved a fantastic drawcard to the York Motor Show, with several hundred cars on display in the main street of York and down on the river reserve. A few cars returned early to Perth due to commitments. Back Up returned mid afternoon to Perth with the satisfaction their services were not required.

NEWS FLASH Never let the truth get in the road of a good storyThe home of the YRC was raided this morning with a Search and Seizure Warrant by the VCCCC (Veteran Car Club Corruption Committee) after allegations similar to the Fine Cotton racing substitution scandal of 2014 were raised. The search and seizure stems from a formally respected club member and his strapper raising questions on the rally that when GM runs York Rally they always win a prize. Further questions had been raised when Ian Bain a very highly respected club member raised how did I win the 1980 category when his rally time was grossly out and zero points on questions. Easy Ian, by default, as you were driving the only 1980 vehicle, but *^%$#@ was driving a 1982 Mercedes 380 SL. A quick check by YRC confirmed that *^%$#@ had entered into the York Rally 1962 MGA, and allegations of rally fixing by substitution of a faster vehicle to deceive the YRC and win a prize. The VCCCC is asking any persons with information or pho-tos to come forward to assist with investigations. A $5 reward has been posted.(Editor’s Note: The editor thanks Dale Miller and crew for step-ping up to run this year’s rally. Hopefully will be there next year but if granddaughter keeps competing in the world champion-ships of highland dancing each August, then who knows!!)

The 2018 York Motor Show

Wow, what a great weekend the 26th of August was this year With a beautiful day promised, we started the day early to get cars into place from the members of the York VCC, before heading off to do our stints for the day. Either being a marshal, doing the registration or selling raffle tick-

ets, we knew exactly where we were supposed to be from the briefing that we had the day before.

Soon the vendors came and set up, followed closely by vehicles. Big ones, small ones. New ones, old ones. Trucks, tractors, caravans, motorbikes, vintage buses that took the public on a trip around town, for a gold coin donation and by the number of people that went on the run, it was a great hit. There were also remote control vehicles, again in all shapes and sizes that went around a very well laid out course.

There were around 650 vehicles on show at this year’s Motor show, I guess it was the 23 degree heat that helped bring people up to York because there were approximately 4,500 visitors enjoying the early spring day.

Peter and Robyn Briggs, brought up an outstanding 1903 Renault, it is a car that has done the run from London to Brighton. It was a real family event with everyone catered for including Billy Kart racing. 5 billy carts. 5 heats, then the final. A trophy was awarded to a boy and a girl who won the race.

Trophies were also given to winners of people’s choice and best under bonnet. It was very pleasing to be able to have an event such as this where there was no animosity to anyone and all I could see on people’s faces, were smiles. We have had numerous feedbacks, all congratulating us on such a well run event. It is such a big show by a very small committee.

To those that volunteered we would like to send a heartfelt thank you. Without them, we could not have run this event. We would also like to thank the Perth VCC, for including York, into their weekend itinerary. Also to the numerous clubs and individuals that supported us.

Preparations are well under way for next year’s event. On a personal note, Graeme and I would like to thank Gary and Trish Byfield. Their organizing skills were outstanding.

Till next time, Kathy, the scribe.

At the Club AGM, Parts Shed stalwarts Phil Stockdale (left) and Trevor Hooper (right) were presented with

plaques of recognition for their work over many years at the Parts Shed. Both Phil and Trevor have played pivotal roles in the development of the Parts Shed and its opera-tion over many years. Between them they’ve also trav-

elled hundreds / thousands of kilometres collecting parts for the Club and making sure that parts are correctly iden-

tified and stored away so that all members can benefit from the materials on hand.

A big THANK YOU to these two members for years of service to the Club !

Rootes Rambles

Hillman Humber Singer Sunbeam Commer Karrier

It will be officially Spring by the time you are reading this. A run up to York for the York Motor Show on the 26th gave us a taste of what is to come. The exceptionally good weather brought out all of the usual cars as well as the Multitudes of "Fine Weather" runners so made for a great day out with a good selection of vehicles from all era's and makes. Well done to the York Crew for a great event. Congratulations to Terrence on having his Series VA Snipe at its 1st official club run. Did note that it has a towbar so hope to see it bringing the 37 Hillman along on a trailer next time......... We did a minor convoy run from Cen-trepoint comprising of the 2 Snipes, a Mark Hawk, Hillman Special and had a Mercumber as the sweeper car. Apart from a Stone Chip or two from impatient cars overtaking and kicking up stones all completed the journey.

As at most shows if we show the Flag there is al-ways the chance of finding out about new cars or potential members and York was no different. Managed to catch up with Nick Soencer who was driving his Viva but had previ-ously told us about a Singer Gazelle that we need to look at, so this time we have his contact details and just need to arrange a visit. Also Michael another VCC member has just become the proud owner of an Hillman Minx that he needs to get out of his brothers shed and then look at what needs to be done. Plenty of expertise and parts available for this one so hopefully will be successful in getting it on the road again.

More on Terrence's Snipe Story. It appears that Ter-rence had his Grandfathers Minx (another story) as an eve-ryday car but like all Rootes owners lusted after a Humber Snipe. So about 29 years ago he managed to purchase

one that was in a less than happy state. After having is-sues getting it started it was eventually parked up until the inevitable seized motor occurred. Took it to a "Mechanic" who could not appreciate such a fine motor car and was told it was "Hopeless". To cut a long story short the car was parked up for at least 25years until the time was right and resurrectance has finally taken place. A short story about true persistence. Also note that there are a few other Rootes cars in the same stable awaiting the "Right Time", namely a Singer Gazelle 111a or 111b, a Humber Vogue Series 1 or 11 and of course the 1937 New minx that has made a few appearances at our displays and the Hillman Nats this year.

There is a push on to locate any and all of the items that actually belong to the Humber Club ( previous) or the Humber Rootes Section of the VCC so if any members have anything stored away in sheds, cupboards or wherev-er can you please let John Ley know so we can list what we have and then decide where we can keep these. Had an offer at our last meeting to transfer any paper files we have on to ( Not sure what) but in an electronic format so we don't lose historical information due to the problems with storing paper. Thank you Ellen hope you don't regret the offer.

We will have had our Annual Sausage Sizzle at Bun-ning Kalamunda which is the 1st September and Deanne has made us a set of aprons for use on such days. The aprons will certainly improve the "Professional Look" not sure what we can do about the faces though, naturally excluding the lovely wives who always help out. Keep in mind the following dates:23rd Sept Spring Rally 7th Oct Rotary Display at Wesley Rootes Roundup 14th October Stirk Park Annual EventLooking for all Rootes Vehicles from all sections and branches to come along to support us and keep the Rootes Group Name at the forefront.Until Next Month " Keep the Lucas leads Dry and the Rootes Boots Scoot-ing." BOOK REVIEW by Bill Buys

--THE biggest book we’ve seen in a long while was Perth motor historian Graeme Cocks’s Red Dust

Racers, a huge work that took 20 years of research. All about racing at Lake Perkolilli, near Kal-

goorlie, in the early years, it tipped the scales at 3.6kg - and made world news when UK writer Doug Nye dropped his copy on his foot.

However, it’s soon to be overtaken by a book on Bentley.

The famed Brit celebrates its 100th anniver-sary next year and to mark the milestone date, it will release a limited edition book covering its illustrious century of operations and its future. Called Bentley Centenary Opus, it will be much more than just a rec-ord of the brand’s history. It will be published by Opus, and its writers have been given exclusive ac-cess to Bentley's designers, engineers and executives to present data never seen before. Apart from a look at the luxury brands plans for the future, it will detail Bentley's glorious 1920s Le Mans victories and iconic models of the 20th century, and highlight the people who helped bring the company and its cars to life.

Here’s the rub, as they tend to say in the up-per echelons of Bentleydom: the book weighs nearly 10 times more than Cocks’s magnificent effort (which, incidentally, made it to the finals of the world motor book of the year). Bentley Centenary Opus has a mass of a coffee table collapsing 30kg, its pages will be up to 50cm square and it will also have some Play-boy-style fold-out sections (‘gateway’ pages in Opus-speak) stretching to 2m, so as to ‘offer full justice to the stunning imagery. The price has not yet been re-vealed, but it will probably be as substantial as the book, which will be printed in three editions: the Mulli-ner and Centenary editions in large print and the Crewe edition will be produced in a more compact size. The books will arrive in 2019 and those wanting to reserve a copy need to contact Opus Publishing.

Bentley will also build a special Mulsanne (car, not book) as a homage to company founder Walter Owen (W.O.) Bentley.

Opus co-founder Hari Ramchandran: We are thrilled and deeply honoured to be able to tell this unique story.

Morris and Austin Display Day

Just wondering if it is still possible to get something in your EA magazine about the Austin (and Morris) Car Display at Whiteman Park on Sunday 7th October 2018. It is the 70th anniversary of the Morris (Minor) car in October 2018.

The Austin Car club is holding a rally at the Whiteman Park Motor Muse-um on Sunday 7th October 2018 and they have invited the Morris Car Club of WA to join them so we thought we should celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Morris make on the same day.

All Austin and Morris cars (club members or non-club members) are invit-ed, in fact anyone with a Austin or Morris car of any model, shape or size is wel-come. Ideally cars should be in place by 0930 hours with some information about their car placed on the windscreen.

From the Morris Car Club we expect to see cars from 1948 through to the current models, with some unique cars such as the Morris Z ute, J Van, Series MM Low lite and highlight Morris 1000s. Everything from sedans, utes, vans and Travellers.

Katanning and Districts“GAZETTE”

Well folks That’s August done and dust-ed. Phew that went quick. Myself I’ve

been busy finishing my 40s Van for the upcoming Spring Tour, so haven’t got much to report.

Lloyd Nelsons run was quite successful by all ac-counts with participants from far and wide. Including some City Fol and a spattering of the crew from Boddington Nuts and Bolts. Thanks lots and good on you Lloyd. See we weren’t all sitting by the cosy fire.

That’s it from the Desk ; Brian NobleBeverley RunAfter a wet and cold Great Southern week the sun came out for Clubs County Peak - Beverley run. Sunday August 5thNarrogin and Wagin members met up at the Narrogin Town Hall and pushed on to the Brookton Railway Station to meet up therewith Members of the Perth Chevrolet Club, Boddingtons Nuts &Bolts Club & Chittering Club Members.

After a quick look through Inezs Antique & Old Wares shop, the convey travelled to Kokeby, turned there Eastwards fol-lowing the well sign posted County Peak road, crossing over the strongly running Avon River. As the convey stopped at the Peak Walk Path they startled a group of Red Kangaroos which bounded every which way.

County Peak is a very high point and looks into seven separate Shires. The Tourist drive loops below the Peak and there is a walk path to the top which most of the Convoy Climbed. There is another low level Lookout overlooking the Yen Yenning Lake Chain which empties into the Avon River. Property owner Scott McLean kindly sign posted the route to the lookout and most club members took this walk.

Then it was a dash into Beverly on Dirt Roads to take in a Xmas in July type lunch in the delightful Bever-ley Hotel. Host John treated us well. After this visits were paid to the Trash & Treasure warehouse on the Highway and then to the outstanding Vintage machines display. There is an astonishing collection of artefact there and very well worth the visit.Run organizer Lloyd Nelson said that it was a great day out. Lots to see and everyone attending was very so-ciable. County Peak is an outstanding tourist attraction but very little known. He said the club possibly could do another run to the Peak next year

The Verdict was missing last month because I was over-seas seeing the long lost family with Max-ine. We had a great month away, saw the folks in England

and drove down to Spain through France, lovely scenery, very good roads and good company. We never noticed any old vehicles in Europe. England was a different matter though and we went to the Haynes Motor Museum in Sparkford to view a magnificent collection and to the Mor-gan Factory in Malvern for a tour. This was very interesting as you see how the cars are made from start to finish. The tour takes about two hours and shows every stage from the chassis build through frame assembly, sheeting, paint and trim. The Morgan is still the only hand built car on the market that is built in the traditional way with an Ash frame and made just like a vintage vehicle. One of my brothers-in- law in the Midlands has a 1937 Buick, a 1929 Chevrolet and a 1942 Army Jeep so we were around some old cars. They are all left hand drive which is a bit of a worry around the English lanes but it didn’t seem to concern him, alt-hough I had a few white knuckle moments at times.

Enough about me, now back to reality. The Auto Jumble held on July 1st was once again a resounding suc-cess - there were 93 Sellers and 1132 buyers. I don’t know where they come from but this is always a popular event and of course good for the club. Two trailer loads of old rubbish (the only way to describe it) was taken down from the parts shed. Now this stuff was to be thrown away and consisted mainly of old Guards in poor condition. Rod Vo-gel said “ let’s try to sell them instead of chucking them away and ask $5.00 for each item,” well they had to re-move the price tags, people were offering more money than was being asked, the parts shed made $1300 from the two trailers loads of stuff !! Notice it’s now called ‘stuff” instead of rubbish. You can never tell what people want, you see, never assume.

PRE-WAR MID WEEK RUN

Doug baker has started a mid-week run which will be held once a month mainly for pre- war vehicles, which of course are all vintage vehicles and some post vintage. I took my Roller which is 1951 and I’m sure it wouldn’t matter what you took. The point is that the run is suitable for the older vehicles if you choose to take one. What a lovely day we all had. The initial meet was at Rotary Park Wanneroo where four cars assembled, we then drove to Muchea where we joined four other vehicles, there was meant to be five but one broke down before reaching us, that’s what happens to old cars occasionally. Our route took us on Chittering Road to join the Great Northern Highway and then on to the Bindoon Museum where we spent a very pleasant hour or so looking around. Lunch stop was at the Bindoon Bakery where we all had naughty things to eat, well I did anyway. Back home at our leisure and a wonder-ful day was had by all.

There were eight cars all told for this first run organ-ised by Doug and I must say all went well, it’s nice to get out mid- week whilst there’s less traffic so we can enjoy our hobby. Our old cars need using, so how about getting them out of the shed and joining Doug for these lovely out-ings.

Meanwhile keep those old wheels turning Richard Whitehead
