Pope John Paul The GreatA Historic Pontificate • 1978-2005
Since Karol Wojtyla, Archbishop of Krakow, Poland, was elected Pope of the Universal Catholic Church on October 16, 1978, and took the name John Paul II, the world has come to know him as a passionate leader of faith, peace and justice. Not only did he unite people of good will across the world, he traveled the world to visit and unite people and spread the ideals of faith, peace and justice. Cardinal Karol Wojtyla visited Philadelphia in 1976 during the Eucharistic Congress and in October, 1979, as Pope where he celebrated Mass on Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway where over a million gathered for the occasion. There is an exhibit of Pope John Paul II in the Polish American Cultural Center Museum, 308 Walnut Street in Historic Philadelphia. In 1995, the museum unveiled a bust of Pope John Paul II, and since then hundreds of thousands of tourists have enjoyed visits to the museum, where they learned more about his life and shared their thoughts about his papacy. On Sunday, April 27, 2014, Blessed John Paul II will be canonized a saint by Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome. This historic event will be celebrated by people around the world. On Wednesday, April 30, 2014, beginning at 12 noon in Philadelphia, the Polish American Cultural Center Museum will open a special pictorial exhibit on Saint John Paul II’s visits to Philadelphia. This event will gather area supporters to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Saint John Paul II, while looking back on his visits to the Philadelphia area. As we expand our exhibit and install a new electronic display to highlight Saint John Paul II and great men and women of Polish and Polish American heritage, we ask everyone to financially support our efforts. In recognition of their financial support, donors will be listed in future editions of the Polish American News as well as on the Exhibit Supporters list on the museum’s Internet site. Listed below is a reply form. We welcome your donations and invite you to plan a trip to the museum to celebrate with our supporters and volunteers.
