I would firstly like to acknowledge the wonderful individual achievements of Patrick Grave and Jeff Ma, our Duces for 2019, who both received a perfect ATAR score of 99.95. Their performance was complemented by our Proxime Luke Negri with 99.90, as part of our wider tally of 43 graduates who scored above 95. Many of these students were able to join us today, as the celebratory photograph above is testament. The wonderful collective achievement of our 2019 cohort saw the elevation of our median ATAR score to 84.75 – up from 82.70. We are delighted that over 1 in 3 of our graduating class were positioned in the top 10% of the State, with 60.5% gaining an ATAR above 80. Many aspects of our 2019 academic achievements have been summed in our infographic, while further individual student and subject achievements are noted in our accompanying Honour Roll. We are conscious that behind every number stands a young man who has ability and intelligence in its multitude of diverse forms. We hope and trust they have come to appreciate the scores they have now attained are but one measure of achievement, and that they remain men for others who will make a difference in the world by the way they live their lives, through their head, their heart and their hands. We look forward to sharing the individual stories of many of our graduates of 2019 with our community over the coming months. Xavier is always about the faces and the stories behind any data – for we are a school built on people and relationships, on our desire for individual human excellence. A snapshot of this is provided in the adjoining column. These young men are but part of a cohort that blended unique talents, personal conquests and achievements, big or small, that offer much inspiration to our community, not least those who will follow them in the Red and Black. Congratulations to those who are proud of their academic achievements and thank you to all members of our Class of 2019. On behalf of all staff of Xavier, I am very pleased to report on the academic attainment of our 2019 graduating class.

COLLEGE PROXIME

Patrick Grave 99.95

COLLEGE DUCES

Congratulations to Patrick Grave, who has achieved a perfect ATAR score of 99.95. His study score of 50 in Mathematical Methods as a Year 11 student now complements his achievements in Chemistry (47), English (48), Latin (44), Mathematics Specialist (45) and Physics (45). Throughout his education at Xavier, Patrick has embodied all we could ever ask for in a Xaverian – he is a true young man for others, striving humbly towards his own magis.

Patrick held leadership roles as the Vice-Captain of Chess, served as

Debating Captain, as well as the Prefect of Faith and Service where he led by example in amassing 522.5 hours of Ignatian Service. Patrick was also a familiar voice in music, singing at most Masses and assemblies. Patrick also fund-raised and participated in the World Challenge to Peru and was a member of the Global Young Leaders who travelled to the UN in New York in 2018.

Patrick’s tutor Ms Marie-Pierre Deleplanque commented recently at Valete; “Patrick, you are not so

much defined by [your] multitude of awards and distinctions born from your general brilliance, than you are by your humility and the magnificent qualities and resolute character it takes to reach this level of achievement. Namely, your ethical approach to all you do, your generosity, your thirst for learning, your attention and service to others and last but not least your unruly disposition for time management.”

Jeff Ma 99.95Congratulations to Jeff Ma, who has achieved a perfect ATAR of 99.95. He has achieved perfect 50s in both English and Physics, Chemistry (46), Mathematical Methods (49) and Mathematics Specialist (44). Considering English is Jeff’s second language, these are extraordinary results.

Since beginning at Xavier in Year 9, Jeff contributed broadly to the life of the College in Debating, as well as his role as Captain of Chess. Despite a heavy study schedule, Jeff completed 170 hours of Ignatian

Service, of which he generously devoted his Friday nights to Friday Night School and the tutoring of refugees in English.

Daryl Mahoney, Jeff’s Methods teacher says of Jeff, “I have had the privilege of teaching Jeff Maths Methods for the past two years where he has been an outstanding student. For such an intelligent person he always comes in eager to learn not just new content but to understand how and why it all works. He works hard to ensure he gets the most out of himself but

also maintains his humour and his humility.”

In Jeff’s Valete speech in October, his Tutor Lucy Lyford reflected on Jeff’s achievements – “Jeff is quite simply one of the most dedicated and hardworking students that I have ever come across in my 20 years of teaching.”

Jeff intends to study Medicine and enter the medical field.

Luke Negri 99.9Congratulations to Luke Negri who is awarded the Alexander Donovan Proxime Award for his score of 99.9.

Luke is a quiet and humble achiever, known to be a gifted student with a warm and compassionate heart. A man of the Sciences, Luke received excellent study scores in Biology

(45), Chemistry (48), English (49), Mathematics Specialist (41) and Physics (43).

Upon graduating from Xavier, Luke intends to specialise in either the medical or scientific field.
