2016 - 2017Annual Report
CELEBRATING
Celebrating collaboration between VNEF and our schools is what I have been doing ever since I stepped into the roll as Executive Director, one year ago. I have become amazed at the value that Viper Nation Education Foundation adds to our eight schools and the enthusiastic support the Foundation provides to our outstanding administrators and teachers. On the next few pages, you’ll read about highlights from the year including:• Our continued sponsorship of Four Points Homework Help, the student-led tutoring service that receives rave reviews from parents; • VNEF’s support of STEM and Robotics events for elementary aged students;• Our impressive 2017 Excellence in Education Scholarship winners;
• VNEF’s support of the rigorous International Baccalaureate programme at VHS; • The array of productive college readiness programs including College JumpStart;• The completion of a transformed VHS library into a Learning Commons and Scholar Lab; • The passionate educators who won 2017 Impact Grants; and• A report of our two primary fundraisers and investments into your schools. We are energized about the year ahead and look forward to serving our academic-driven community, the VIPER NATION. On behalf of our students, teachers, administrators and Board of Directors, thank you for this opportunity to serve you. It is you and your financial contributions that made this all possible.
It is my honor to serve as the second President of the newly renamed Viper Nation Education Foundation. Aligning the Foundation with Vandegrift High School’s mascot helped clarify the Foundation’s mission to support academic programs within the Vandegrift High School feeder pattern. At the same time, the Foundation remains committed to supporting district-wide programs that are within the scope of our mission to serve STEM, college readiness, leadership and entrepreneurship, such as the outstanding Naviance platform used by LISD high school students. In the years since its inception, VNEF has come to be realized as a fulcrum for our extraordinary area administrators. My oldest child attends River Ridge Elementary school, and I witnessed the importance of a fun, exciting STEM event funded by VNEF last year. I was amazed to see young
students running around as excited doing science experiments as walking into a candy store. VNEF happily sponsored this event to further support the wonderful teachers in our community, like Ms. April Greear at River Ridge, and the investment they are making in our children. Before I became President, my wife Cris and I supported VNEF because giving back to our schools not only allowed us to support our children, but also to support the entire team of hardworking principals and extraordinary teachers for which we are so grateful. Viper Nation schools truly are extraordinary because of the team we build together. I look forward to continuing to help expand and strengthen the educational opportunities for all the students in the Viper Nation.
VIPER NATION EDUCATION FOUNDATION stimulates academic excellence for students in the Four Points community
in the areas of college readiness, leadership, entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through
private and corporate funding.

FREE TUTORING PROMOTES LEARNING, LEADERSHIP & SERVICE In 2015, VNEF teamed up with Vandegrift High School students to sponsor Four Points Homework Help (FPHH), a free tutoring service for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Tutors are members of the National Honor Society, Peer Assistance and Leadership and Mu Alpha Theta organizations at VHS. Parents find the program immensely valuable, often noting an increase in productivity and efficiency in their students. Officers and tutors gain greater skills in communication, collaboration and problem solving, all while
serving their community in a positive and nurturing environment. From September through April with days off for holiday breaks, state testing and other major
exams, FPHH took place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Cups & Cones, a local café in the Steiner Ranch neighborhood.
“We couldn’t have been happier with my daughter’s experience at Homework Help. She was tutored in Algebra to reinforce the classroom lessons. The tutors were not only
equipped on the subject matter but were patient while she grasped concepts. Some of the tutors
were downright excited about math! I think it was also a highly successful program for the
students to see the older kids as role models when it comes to schoolwork. I hope this is a program
we can continue in the community and a big shout-out to Cups and Cones for making
their facilities available.”
Staci Forshee, parent of students at Canyon Ridge Middle School & Vandegrift High School
Robotics Inspires Innovation, Teamwork, Gracious Professionalism & Problem Solving though STEMRobotics offers kindergarten students through seniors an opportunity to learn about science, engineering and technology in a fun and engaging way while inspiring innovation, cheering teamwork, promoting self-confidence, improving communication skills and developing leadership. As students reach the high school level, the designing, programming and mechanical proficiency required to produce robots often translates into scholarships, internships and careers in technology and engineering. Since VNEF’s early days, the Foundation has sponsored robotics clubs that follow the international youth organization FIRST, which operates FIRST LEGO League (FLL), Junior FLL and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). VNEF sponsors an annual FLL scrimmage and earmarks funds annually for the eight Four Points-area schools to secure additional equipment and supplies.
“VNEF is the difference between good schools and outstanding schools!
The support for academic programs like robotics and STEM set our students up with opportunities to be on the forefront of excellence in
emerging trends in academic advancement.”
Chris & Pam Province, VNEF Board Member and parents of students at
Four Points Middle School & Vandegrift High School
CLASS OF 2017 EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPSEach year VNEF honors Vandegrift High School seniors with Excellence in Education Scholarships. The Class of 2017 represented an impressive array of graduates, many who will continue their higher education journey in a STEM field. We applaud their hard work and wish them great success. Special thanks to our very generous sponsors for honoring these students.

“So much of what we do day-to-day revolves around
technology and our increasingly interconnected world.
Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will be in our future (whether one is young or older). We are thrilled to have provided some scholarship support for a female Viper to pursue
her dream of a career in a STEM related field.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMME COMES TO VHS Vandegrift High School is in the three-year authorization phase to become Leander ISD’s second high school to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. To support this comprehensive, two-year,advancedacademicstudythatbeginsjunioryear,VNEFgranted$25,000toLISD.AnIBdiplomais considered equivalent to first-year college courses, and graduates receive advanced standing and college credit for their work.
“We were excited about Vandegrift’s announcement on
becoming an IB high school. It wasn’t long after that, Quin came home and said that he was declaring
the IB tract his freshman year. Quin has always pursued higher rigor and he was sold on IB because instruction is not dictated ‘by the test’
but rather independent thinking and understanding of different perspectives. He wants the higher level challenge and is excited about
the international cultures aspect. Plus, he feels it will open more opportunities for colleges and beyond.”
Jill & Rich Collins, parents of a 2017 Vandegrift High School freshman
VHS SCHOLAR LAB ADVANCES LEARNING & COLLABORATION Today’s high school and university students use wireless technology and robust online resources to learn and conduct research. This has generated a redesign of the traditional library into a digitally focused, collaborative workspace called a Learning Commons. VNEF donations have already been hard at work making changes to the Vandegrift High School library, and in 2017, building the Scholar Lab became a priority. This year demand for the lab grew dramatically with the rise in student population. Space increasingly became a premium as existing drop-in computer labs were converted into regular classroom instruction and advanced programs like the IB Diploma and AP Capstone were added to the curriculum. More than ever before, the Scholar Lab would solve a serious need for a colloborative learning space.
Thanks to generous supporters, construction of the Scholar Lab began in June 2017. By using much of an existing shell, we replaced the interior wall with glass to create unobstructed views. Heavy, immovable desks were repurposed, making way for flexible, lightweight tables built for technological use. With the ability to fold up for easy space reconfiguration, the new furniture can turn a group space into a classroom style setting in minutes.
“ In transforming the VHS library into a more collective, creative and flexible learning space,
Librarian Zandra Lopez and other VHS administrators envisioned a Learning Commons that invited student collaboration. Together, we
designed an open, transparent environment with barrier-free zones where groups or individuals
could gather to work or participate in classroom instruction. The Scholar Lab is the latest addition,
making a highly efficient lab for students and teachers alike.”
Michelle Beck, VNEF Board Member and parent of students at Vandegrift High School
PROGRAMS FACILITATE COLLEGE SEARCH, ADMISSIONS & SCHOLARSHIPSNaviance – VNEF funded since 2011In the 2011-12 school year, Leander ISD implemented Naviance, an online comprehensive college and career readiness platform, with financial help from VNEF. Since then, VNEF has remained committed to financially supporting this essential planning tool for all LISD high school students, parents and counselors. Naviance tools ultimately align student strengths and interests to post-secondary goals, helping make a complex process of applying for college more manageable to navigate.
PSAT Team and SAT Support – VNEF funded since 2013 & 2014Students who score within the top 100 students on their 10th grade PSAT receive an invitation to participate in the PSAT Team, a group of high potential sophomores who work with VHS-trained teachers during the summer through mid-October of their junior year to prepare for the final PSAT, which determines Vandegrift’s National Merit and National Hispanic Scholars. Qualifying scores open the door to thousands of dollars in scholarship awards for those students, in
addition to helping boost their college entrance SAT and ACT exam scores. Since the inception of PSAT Team, VHS has made incredible gains in the number of National Merit Scholar Finalists and Commended Scholars. In 2012, 14 Vandegrift students were recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars while three students were National Merit Semifinalists. By 2016, VHS Commended Scholars climbed to 40 students. In spring 2017, 17 students reached National Merit Semifinalist status. VNEF also supported standardized test support for the entire VHS senior class throughout the late fall and spring terms. As soon as teachers complete PSAT Team instruction in early October, they transition to drop-in SAT instruction period during PIT (Personalized Instruction Time) for any junior or senior wanting this personalized support.
College JumpStart – VNEF funded since 2015The brain child of College and Career Counselor Sarah Spradling, College JumpStart is sponsored by VNEF and offered for free to any Vandegrift rising senior. Throughout
the summer, trained teachers offer the four-day sessions to guide students on preparing for and completing the college application process. VHS instructors review how to research potential colleges, determine deadlines, review requirements for applications and essays, and then support the drafting of these documents; how to request letters of recommendation and the etiquette therein; order transcripts; evaluate rank/non-rank options, and much more. A total of 11 seminars were offered during the 2017 summer to more than 220 VHS rising seniors who elected to attend what has become a highly valued VNEF-sponsored program.

Elementary Events Opens STEM Door School-wide STEM events are recognized as one of the most productive ways to encourage kids to enjoy STEM-based subjects and consider them as pathways for a career. Given that Viper Nation Education Foundation holds STEM education as one of its missionpillars,everyyeartheFoundationopensup$500grantsto area elementary and middle schools, their PTAs or other school organizations to encourage STEM events on their campus. On November 7, 2016, VNEF collaborated with River Ridge Elementary School science and math teacher April Greear to create a highly successful model, held in the cafeteria concurrently with the school’s Book Fair. PALS (Peer Assisted Leadership Service) members from Vandegrift High School helped children conduct science experiments while the Viperbot FTC team 4546 “Snakebyte” demonstrated their robot to a crew of aspiring engineers. Principal Shelley Roberts said the evening was one of the largest community events the school has ever seen.
