Elaborating on his viewpoint, the Prime Minister recalled how India’s spiritual, cultural, political and economic links with the Central Eurasian region enriched both the regions since ancient times. Terming the development as restoration of “historical ties of natural affinity”, Modi said, “It will also promote peace and prosperity in this vast region that has often been called the pivot of human history. It advances our shared vision to reconnect and integrate Eurasia’s different region.” In this context, he said his visit to all five Central Asian countries is a testimony to the importance that India attaches to the region. Referring to India’s “strong and deepening strategic partnership with China and Russia”, he said, “Our membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a natural extension of these relationships and mirrors the region’s place in India’s future.” “Together with other countries present here, SCO could be a springboard for an integrated and connected Eurasia to become one the most dynamic regions in the world,” he asserted, adding “the time has come to reach out to each other across this region.” Highlighting the mutual benefits of such relationship, the Prime Minister said, “As we look forward, we would lend our support to improving transportation and communication networks in the region. We can create a vast network of physical and digital connectivity that extends from Eurasia's northern corner to Asia's southern shores. The International North South Transportation Corridor is a step in that direction.” “We will support efforts to create an environment that eases barriers and facilitates trade and investments in the region,” he asserted. He said while India's energy requirement and resources and its vast and dynamic market will boost prosperity in the SCO region, India, in turn will deepen its engagement in human resource development, information and communication technology, pharmaceuticals and health care, banking and capital markets, small and medium enterprises and micro finance, and food security and agriculture. PM Modi sees SCO membership as a historic process The 7th BRICS Summit was held at Ufa, Russia on 9 July 2015. The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met with the leaders of the BRICS countries-Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa in the Russian city of Ufa. This was Shri Modi's third meeting with his BRICS peers in 12 months. He attended the 6th BRICS Summit in Fortaleza in July last year, followed by a gathering of BRICS leaders in Brisbane on the margins of the last G20 meeting. The Ufa Summit begin on 8 July with an informal dinner, followed by the formal programme on the 9th that started with meeting between BRICS country leaders and members of the BRICS Business Council - as a two-part programme whose theme was 'BRICS Partnership - A Powerful Factor for Global Development', and whose agenda covered both political and economic issues. A BRICS Outreach Session followed with Russia, as the Chair of BRICS, inviting the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), both Members and Observers, as well as members of the Eurasian Economic Union and Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. A total of 12 leaders met the five BRICS leaders for that session, which concluded with a reception. During the Russian Chairmanship, there have been a large number of pre-Summit meetings at both governmental and non-governmental level, including those between Trade Ministers, the BRICS Business Forum and the Economic Forum, as well as the BRICS Academic Forum and the Think Tank Council. There have also been meetings of Environment Ministers, National Security Advisors and a BRICS Youth Summit. India regards the BRICS Summit as an important forum for consolidating positions among five significant world economies on issues of common interest. The most significant issues involve governance, coordination and cooperation on global economic issues. Among key achievements the forum has registered are the BRICS New Development Bank, Contingency Reserve Fund, Export Credit Insurence, Financing for Innovation and new proposals for Customs Cooperation and Reinsurance Pool. PM Modi suggested the role of BRICS cooperation in Annual BRICS Trade fairs, BRICS Railways Research Centre and Supreme Audit Institutions among others. He called for BRICS countries to establish better coordination so as to have a fruitful and ambitious agreement agreed on climate change in Paris. PM Modi emphasised to focus on BRICS digital Initiative by utilising skills and provide new ideas to the developing countries. India will host the next BRICS meeting in 2016.
