BRICS: Building global bridges

Conveying India’s gratitude to themember states of the ShanghaiCooperation Organisation (SCO) foraccepting the country as a fullmember of the group at its Plenary,Prime Minister Narendra Modi said,“It reflected the natural links ofhistory”.Elaborating on his viewpoint, the

Prime Minister recalled how India’sspiritual, cultural, political andeconomic links with the CentralEurasian region enriched both theregions since ancient times.Terming the development as

restoration of “historical ties ofnatural affinity”, Modi said, “It willalso promote peace and prosperity inthis vast region that has often beencalled the pivot of human history. Itadvances our shared vision toreconnect and integrate Eurasia’sdifferent region.”In this context, he said his visit to

all five Central Asian countries is atestimony to the importance thatIndia attaches to the region.Referring to India’s “strong and

deepening strategic partnership withChina and Russia”, he said, “Ourmembership of Shanghai

Cooperation Organisation is a naturalextension of these relationships andmirrors the region’s place in India’sfuture.”“Together with other countries

present here, SCO could be aspringboard for an integrated andconnected Eurasia to become onethe most dynamic regions in theworld,” he asserted, adding “thetime has come to reach out to eachother across this region.”Highlighting the mutual benefits

of such relationship, the Prime

Minister said, “As we lookforward, we would lend oursupport to improving transportationand communication networks inthe region. We can create a vastnetwork of physical and digitalconnectivity that extends fromEurasia's northern corner to Asia'ssouthern shores. The InternationalNorth South TransportationCorridor is a step in that direction.”“We will support efforts to

create an environment that easesbarriers and facilitates trade and

investments in the region,” heasserted.He said while India's energy

requirement and resources and itsvast and dynamic market will boostprosperity in the SCO region, India,in turn will deepen its engagementin human resource development,information and communicationtechnology, pharmaceuticals andhealth care, banking and capitalmarkets, small and mediumenterprises and micro finance, andfood security and agriculture.

PM Modi sees SCO membership as a historic process

The 7th BRICS Summit was held at Ufa, Russia on 9July 2015. The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi metwith the leaders of the BRICS countries-Brazil, Russia,China and South Africa in the Russian city of Ufa.This was Shri Modi's third meeting with his BRICS

peers in 12 months. He attended the 6th BRICS Summitin Fortaleza in July last year, followed by a gathering ofBRICS leaders in Brisbane on the margins of the lastG20 meeting.The Ufa Summit begin on 8 July with an informal

dinner, followed by the formal programme on the 9ththat started with meeting between BRICS countryleaders and members of the BRICS Business Council -as a two-part programme whose theme was 'BRICSPartnership - A Powerful Factor for GlobalDevelopment', and whose agenda covered both politicaland economic issues.A BRICS Outreach Session followed with Russia, as

the Chair of BRICS, inviting the leaders of the ShanghaiCooperation Organisation (SCO), both Members andObservers, as well as members of the EurasianEconomic Union and Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Atotal of 12 leaders met the five BRICS leaders for thatsession, which concluded with a reception.During the Russian Chairmanship, there have been a

large number of pre-Summit meetings at bothgovernmental and non-governmental level, including

those between Trade Ministers, the BRICS BusinessForum and the Economic Forum, as well as the BRICSAcademic Forum and the Think Tank Council. Therehave also been meetings of Environment Ministers,National Security Advisors and a BRICS Youth Summit. India regards the BRICS Summit as an important

forum for consolidating positions among fivesignificant world economies on issues of commoninterest. The most significant issues involvegovernance, coordination and cooperation on globaleconomic issues.Among key achievements the forum has registered

are the BRICS New Development Bank, Contingency

Reserve Fund, Export Credit Insurence, Financing forInnovation and new proposals for Customs Cooperationand Reinsurance Pool. PM Modi suggested the role ofBRICS cooperation in Annual BRICS Trade fairs,BRICS Railways Research Centre and Supreme AuditInstitutions among others. He called for BRICScountries to establish better coordination so as to have afruitful and ambitious agreement agreed on climatechange in Paris.PM Modi emphasised to focus on BRICS digital

Initiative by utilising skills and provide new ideas to thedeveloping countries. India will host the next BRICSmeeting in 2016.
