Cell theory

And types of cells

Levels of organization

Levels of organization Cell -- basic unit of life (Ex. blood cell, nerve cell, Collenchyma cells(plants))

○ Different types of cells have different jobs, this is called Cell Specialization

Tissue -- group of cells that perform a particular function

Organ -- groups of different tissues that work together (Ex. Heart, brain, skin)

Organ system -- a group of organs working together to perform a specific function

(Ex. Digestive tract)

Organism -- entire living thing that carries out all the basic life functions

Discovery of the Cell ● Anton van Leeuwenhoek● First described living cells as

seen through a simple

microscope

● 1600’s

Discovery of the Cell ● Discovered by Robert

Hooke ● He looked at a piece of cork

in a microscope and noticed

“tiny, empty chambers”.

● He called them “cells”.

● Used a compound

microscope

Discovery of the Cell ● Mathias Scleiden identified

the first plant cells and

concluded that all plants are

made of cells.

● Thomas Schwann made the

same conclusion about

animal cells

Cell Theory

1) All living

things are

made up of

one or more

cells and their

products

Page 8: Cell theory - sps186.org theory (1).pdf · Different types of cells have different jobs, this is called Cell Specialization Tissue -- group of cells that perform a particular function

Cell Theory

2) The cell is the

simplest unit of

structure and

organization in

organisms.

Cell Theory

3) All cells come

from other cells;

they do not come

from non-living

matter.

Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic

Page 13: Cell theory - sps186.org theory (1).pdf · Different types of cells have different jobs, this is called Cell Specialization Tissue -- group of cells that perform a particular function

Prokaryotic Cells

● Simple, unicellular organisms (e.g. archaea and bacteria)

● No cell nucleus ● No membrane-bound

organelles

Page 14: Cell theory - sps186.org theory (1).pdf · Different types of cells have different jobs, this is called Cell Specialization Tissue -- group of cells that perform a particular function

Eukaryotic Cells● Larger than prokaryotic

cells ● Contain a nucleus and

membrane-bound organelles

● Includes protists, fungi, animals, and plants
