CellsThe basic building blocks of life

What Are Cells?• What do you Know about
cells?• Are there different types
of cells?• What are different types of
cells?• Why are they important?• Are there different parts
of cells?
![Page 3: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
What are Cells?• Cells are the basic building blocks of life• They provide structure for the body,
take in nutrients from food, convert those nutrients into energy, and carry out specialized functions• Cells have many parts, each with a
different function.• these parts are called organelles that have
specialized structures and perform certain tasks within the cell
• Examples of cells: Skin cells, blood cells, nerve cells, sex cells, fat cells, cancer cells
![Page 4: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Two Types of cells•Prokaryotic cells• organisms without a cell nucleus or any other membrane-bound organelles.
•Eukaryotic cells• organisms whose cells are organized into complex structures by internal membranes and a cytoskeleton. The most characteristic membrane bound structure is the nucleus
![Page 5: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What are the differences between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cell
Eukaryotic Cell
![Page 6: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
We will be focusing on Eukaryotic cells

What are found in cells?• All cells contain Organelles• Organelles are small structures found
in cells with specialized functions
![Page 8: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Organelles and their Function •Nucleus: the Boss! control center of cell. Also houses DNA
• Cell membrane: separates cells contents from environment. semi permeable• Cytoplasm: Jelly like substance inside the cell. (made of
water, salt and proteins)•Mitochondria: Produces energy for the cell; the “power
house!” of the cell• Rough ER: transport and storage, and is lined with
ribosomes• Ribosomes: makes proteins
![Page 9: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Organelles and their Function (cont.)•Golgi Apparatus: synthesis, packages and
releases proteins or lipids. Like UPS
•Centrioles: where cellular division and reproduction occur•cytoskeleton: Supports structure and helps move
proteins•Lysosomes: contains enzymes for digestion•Vesicle: “vehicle”, moves proteins, lipids and
carbohydrates throughout cell

Animal Cell
![Page 11: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
With your neighbor, label as many organelles as you can

What about plant cells?• Plant cells and animal cells are similar, BUT NOT
exactly alike. • There are both different and similar organelles found
in plant and animal cells• What are some of the differences?
![Page 13: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Organelles found in plants, and not animal cells•Cell Wall: the outer most
membrane of the cell, provides support and protection •Vacuoles: storage
compartments for nutrients •Chloroplast: where light
is captured and converted to energy (photosynthesis)
![Page 14: Cells pp lesson](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022033107/58a49f2e1a28ab741b8b6ef1/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Compare and Contrast Plant and Animal Cells using a vendiagram. Then discuss with your neighborPlant Similarities Animal
