    Definitionofcellular serviceor mobile service

A terrestrialradio-based service providing two-way communications by dividing the serving

area into aregularpattern of sub-areas or cells, each with a base station having alow-power

    transmitterand receiver.

A telecommunications service that permits customers to usewireless, mobile telephones to

connect, vialow-powerradio transmission sites called cell sites, eitherto the public switched

    networkorto othermobile cellularphones.

Introductionofcellular servicein India The postaland telecom sectors had started by British Government in India. In 1850, we may

called it is an origin ofCellularphone service in India.

Thefirst experimentalelectric telegraph Linewas started between Kolkataand Diamond

Harbour. In 1851, it was opened forthe British East India Company.

In 1985 Cellulartelephone service started on the Non-commercially basis in Delhi.

Govt. announced a National Telecom Policy' in 1994. Licenseforproviding cellularmobile

services granted by the government ofIndiaforthe Metropolitan cites ofDelhi, Mumbai,

Kolkataand Chennai. Cellularmobile service to be duopoly i.e. not more than two cellular

mobile operators could belicensed in each telecom circle, underafixed licensefeeregime

    for10 years.

The Cellularservices were commerciallylaunched in August 1995 in India. This Cellular

mobile servicewas introduced with both the operators from public and private sector. In 1995

    Overviewoftelecom industry

Indian Telecom sector, likeany other industrial sector in the country, has gone through many

phases ofgrowth and diversification. Starting from telegraphic and telephonic systems in the

19th century, the field of tele phonic communication has now expanded to make use of

advanced technologies like GSM, CDMA, and WLL to the great 3G Technology in mobile

phones. Day by day, both the Public Players and the Private Players are putting in theirresources and efforts to improve the telecommunication technology so as to give the

    maximum to their customers.

The Indian telecom sector can be broadly classified into Fixed Line Telephonyand mobile

telephony. The major players of the telecom sectorareexperiencing a fierce competition in

both the segments. The majorplayers like BSNL, MTNL, VSNL in thefixed lineand Airtel,

Hutch, Idea, Tata, Reliance in the mobile segment are coming up with new tariffs and

discount schemes to gain the competitive advantage. The Public Players and the Private

Players share thefixed lineand the mobile segments. Currently the Public Players have more

    than 60% ofthe market share.

Market shares of public and Private Players

Both fixed lineand mobile segments serve the basic needs oflocal calls, long distance calls

and the international calls, with the provision ofbroadband services in thefixed line segment

and GPRS in the mobilearena. Traditional telephones have been replaced by the codeless and

the wireless instruments. Mobile phone providers have also come up with GPRS-enabled

multimedia messaging, Internet surfing, and mobile-commerce. The much-awaited 3G

mobile technology is soon going to enter the Indian telecom market. The GSM, CDMA,

    5

WLL service providers are all upgrading themselves to provide 3G mobile services.

Along with improvement in telecom services, there is also an improvement in manufacturing.

In the beginning, therewere only the Siemens handsets in India but nowawhole series of

    new handsets, such as Nokia's latest N-series, Sony Ericsson's W-series, Motorola's PDA

phones, etc. have comeu p. Touch screen and advanced technological handsets are gainingpopularity. Radio services have also been incorporated in the mobile handsets, along with

other applications like high storage memory, multimedia applications, multimedia games,

MP3 Players, video generators, Camera's, etc. The value added services provided by the

mobile service operators contribute more than 10% ofthe totalrevenue.

    Growthofcellular service

India is the world's fastest growing Wireless market, with 729.57 Million mobile phonesubscribers as ofNovember, 2010. It is also the second largest telecommunication network inthe world in terms of number of wireless connections after China. The Indian Mobilesubscriberbase has increased in size byafactorofmore than one hundred since 2001 whenthe number of subscribers in the countrywas approximately 5 million to 729.57 Million by

    Nov 2010.

As the fastest growing telecommunications industry in theworld, it is projected that Indiawill have 1.159 billion mobile subscribers by 2013. Furthermore, projections by severalleading global consultancies indicate that the total numberofsubscribers in Indiawillexceedthe total subscriber count in the China by 2013. The industry is expected to reach a size of344,921 crore (US$74.85 billion) by 2012 at a growth rate ofover26 percent, and generate

employment opportunities forabout 10 million people during the same period. According toanalysts, the sectorwould create direct employment for 2.8 million peopleand for 7 million

indirectly. In 2008-09 the overall telecom equipments revenue in India stood at 136,833(US$29.69 billion) during the fiscal, as against 115,382 crore (US$25.04 billion) a yearbefore.

A large population, low telephony penetration levels, and a rise in consumers' income andspending owing to strong economic growth have helped make India the fastest-growingtelecom market in theworld. Thefirst operator is the state-owned incumbent BSNL. BSNLwas created by corporatization of the erstwhile Indian Telecommunication Service, a

government unit responsible for provision of telephony services. Subsequently, after thetelecommunication policies were revised to allow private operators, companies such as

Vodafone, Bharti Airtel, Tata Indicom, Idea Cellular, Airceland Loop Mobile haveenteredthe , rural India outpaced urban India in mobile growth rate. Bharti Airtel now is the largest

    telecom company in India.

India's mobile phone market is thefastest growing in theworld, with companies adding some18.98 million new customers in Oct 2010.

The total numberof telephones in the country crossed the 742.12 million mark on Oct 31st,2010. The overall tele-density has increased to 62.31% by Oct 31st 2010. In the wirelesssegment, 18.98 million subscribers were added in Oct 2010. The totalwireless subscribers

    Post paid service

Post Paid: A model ofcellularservicewhereby the customer is charged forusage in the priormonth (hence 'post'usage), and hence does not featureany limitations on volume of serviceused. In contrast the Prepaid modelasks customers to add a certain amount to theiraccounts

priorto usageand theirmaximum usage is limited to theamount that is added to theaccount.

Depending on the country ofusage, there might bea numberof types of charges associatedwith such service: -Line Rent or Fixed charges which are basically fees charged by theservice provider for the privilege of maintaining a phone numberand account with them. -VAT/Taxes/Govt Fees which vary depending on the country but could add up to a substantial

portion of the bill -Usage charges per minute of voice service, per text/pic/multimediamessage sent or received and per megabyte of data service used. Recently this is beingreplaced byaflat feeforUnlimited Voice, Messaging and Data services.

    Prepaid service

A prepaid mobile phone (also commonlyreferred to as pay-as-you-go, pay-as-you-talk, "payand go", orprepaid wireless ) is a mobile phoneforwhich credit is purchased in advance ofserviceuse. The purchased credit is used to pay formobile phone services at the point theservice is accessed or consumed. If there is no available credit then access to therequestedservice is denied by the mobile phone network. Users areable to top u p their credit at anytimeusing avariety ofpayment mechanisms.

Thealternative billing method (and what is commonlyreferred to as a mobile phone contract)is the post-paid mobile phone, whereauserenters into along-term billing arrangement with amobile networkoperatororcarriage service provider(CSP).

Valueadded service (VAS)A value-added service (VAS) is popularas a telecommunications industry term fornon-coreservices, or in short, all services beyond standard voice calls and fax transmissions. However,it can beused in any service industry, for services availableat little or no cost, to promotetheirprimary business. In the telecommunication industry, on a conceptuallevel, value-addedservices add value to the standard service offering, spurring the subscriberto use theirphonemore and allowing the operator to drive u p their ARPU. For mobile phones, whiletechnologies like SMS, MMS and GPRS are usually considered value-added services, adistinction mayalso be made between standard (peer-to-peer) content and premium-chargedcontent.

Value-added services are supplied eitherin-house by the mobile networkoperatorthemselvesor bya third-partyvalue-added service provider (VASP), also known as a content provider(CP) such as All Headline News orReuters.

VASPs typically connect to the operator using protocols like Short message peer-to-peerprotocol (SMPP), connecting eitherdirectly to the short message service centre (SMSC) or,increasingly, to a messaging gateway that allows the operator to controland of the content

    better.

    SMS service

Short Message Service (SMS) is the text communication service component ofphone, web ormobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow theexchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices. SMS textmessaging is the most widelyused dataapplication in theworld, with 2.4 billion activeusers,or74% ofall mobile phone subscribers. The term SMS is used as a synonym forall types ofshort text messaging as wellas theuseractivity itselfin many parts oftheworld.

SMS as used on modern handsets was originated from radio telegraphy in radio memo pagersusing standardized phone protocols and laterdefined as part ofthe Global System forMobileCommunications (GSM) series ofstandards in 1985 as a means ofsending messages ofup to160 characters, to and from GSM mobile handsets. Since then, support for the service hasexpanded to include other mobile technologies such as ANSI CDMA networks and DigitalAMPS, as wellas satelliteand landline networks. Most SMS messages are mobile-to-mobiletext messages though the standard supports othertypes ofbroadcast messaging as well.

    MMS service

Multimedia Messaging Service, or MMS, is a standard way to send messages that includemultimedia content to and from mobile phones. It extends the core SMS (Short MessageService) capability that allowed exchange of text messages only u p to 160 characters inlength.

The most popularuse is to send photographs from camera-equipped handsets, although it isalso popular as a method of delivering news and entertainment content including videos,

    pictures, text pages and ringtones.

The standard is developed by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), although during

development it was part ofthe 3GPP and WAP groups.

    IM service

Instant messaging (IM) is aform ofreal-time direct text-based communication between twoor more people using personal computers or other devices, along with shared clients. Theuser's text is conveyed overa network, such as the Internet. Moreadvanced instant messagingsoftware clients also allow enhanced modes of communication, such as livevoice orvideocalling.

    E mail service

An e-mail hosting service is an Internet hosting service that runs e-mail servers.

E-mail hosting services usually offer premium e-mail at a cost as opposed to advertising

supported freee-mail orfreewebmail. E-mail hosting services thus differfrom typicalend-user e-mail providers such as webmail sites. They cater mostly to demanding e-mailusersand Smalland Mid Size (SME) businesses, whilelargerenterprises usuallyrun their own e-mail hosting service. E-mail hosting providers allowforpremium e-mail services along withcustom configurations and large number ofaccounts. In addition, hosting providers manage

    9

user's own domain name, including anye-mailauthentication scheme that the domain ownerwishes to enforce in orderto convey the meaning that using a specific domain name identifies

    and qualifies e-mail senders.

Most e-mail hosting providers offeradvanced premium e-mail solutions hosted on dedicatedcustom e-mail platforms. The technologyand offerings ofdifferent e-mail hosting providers

can therefore vary with different needs. E-mail offered by most we bhosting companies isusually more basic standardized POP3 based e-mail and webmail based on open sourcewebmail applications like Horde or Squirrel Mail. Almost all we bhosting providers offerstandard

    Roaming service

In wireless telecommunications, roaming is a general term referring to the extension of

connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service

was registered. Roaming ensures that thewireless device is ke pt connected to the network,

without losing the connection. The term "roaming" originates from the GSM (Global System

for Mobile Communications) sphere; the term "roaming" can also beapplied to the CDMA

technology. Traditional GSM Roaming is defined (cf. GSM Association Permanent

ReferenceDocument AA.39) as theabilityfora cellularcustomer to automatically makeand

receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data

services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by

means ofusing avisited network. This can be done byusing a communication terminal or

elsejust by using the subscriber identity in the visited network. Roaming is technically

supported by mobility management, authentication, authorization and billing procedures.

    Callertune service

A ring back tone is an audible indication that is heard on the telephone line by the callerwhile the

phone they called is still in use. It is normallyarepeated tone, designed to assure the calling party that

the called party's line is ringing, although the ring-back tone may be out of sync with the ringing

    signal.

    GPRS

General packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data service on the 2G and3G cellular communication systems global system for mobile communications (GSM). The

service is available to users in over 200 countries worldwide. GPRS was originallystandardized by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in response to the

earlierCDPDand i-mode packet switched cellular technologies. It is now maintained by the3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

It is a best-effort service, as opposed to circuit switching, wherea certain quality of service

(QoS) is guaranteed during the connection. In 2G systems, GPRS provides datarates of 56-114 kbit/second. 2G cellular technology combined with GPRS is sometimes described as2.5G, that is, a technology between the second (2G) and third (3G) generations of mobiletelephony. It provides moderate-speed data transfer, byusing unused time division multiple

    10

access (TDMA) channels in, for example, the GSM system. GPRS is integrated into GSMRelease 97 and newerreleases.

GPRS usage charging is based on volume of data, eitheras part ofa bundle or on a payasyouuse basis. An example ofa bundle is up to 5 GB permonth forafixed fee. Usageabovethe bundle cap is eithercharged forpermegabyte ordisallowed. The payas youuse charging

is typically per megabyte of traffic. This contrasts with circuit switching data, which istypically billed perminute ofconnection time, regardless ofwhetherornot theusertransfersdata during that period.

    Internet service

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standardInternet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network ofnetworks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and governmentnetworks, oflocal to global scope, that arelinked bya broad array ofelectronic, wireless andoptical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources

and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW)and the infrastructure to support electronic mail.

Most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television arereshaped orredefined by the Internet, giving birth to new services such as Voice overInternetProtocol (VoIP) and IPTV. Newspaper, bookand otherprint publishing areadapting to Website technology, or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds. The Internet has enabled oraccelerated newforms ofhuman interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, andsocial networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and smallartisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supplychains across entire industries.

    Callbarring service

Call barring serviceallows you to restrict use ofyour mobile handset. This function is veryconvenient in caseyouwish to giveyourhandset to third persons for temporaluse. You canalso secureyourselfagainst random dial ofinternational numberbyusing therespective typeofcall barring.

    Voicemail service

Voicemail (also known as voice-mail, VMS, or message bank) is a centralized system ofstored telephone messages that can beretrieved later. The term is also used more broadly to

denoteany system ofconveying a stored telecommunications voice message, including usingan answering machine. Most cell phones havevoicemailas a basic feature, and manylandline phones and corporate PBXs have theirown voicemail options.

    Videoconference service

A videoconference orvideo conference (also known as avideo teleconference) is a set ofinteractive telecommunication technologies which allow two ormorelocations to interact via

  • 8/6/2019 Cellular Service

    11/22

    11

two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It has also been called 'visualcollaboration'and is a type ofgroupware.

Videoconferencing differs from videophone calls in that it's designed to servea conferencerather than individuals. It is an intermediate form of video telephony, first deployedcommercially by AT&T during theearly 1970s using theirPicture phone technology.

    Calldiverting service

Callforwarding (orcall diverting), in telephony, is afeature on some telephone networks thatallows an incoming call to a called party, which would be otherwise unavailable, to beredirected to a mobile telephone orother telephone numberwhere the desired called party issituated. It was invented by Ernest J. Bonanno. In North Americausually (though not always)the forwarded linerings once, to remind the customerusing Callforwarding that the call is

being redirected. More consistently, theforwarded line indicates its condition by stutterdialtone.

In Europe, most networks indicate that unconditional callforwarding is activewith a specialdial tone. When the phone is picked u p it is immediately apparent that calls are beingforwarded.

    Callwaiting service

Callwaiting (orcatch phone in Japan), in telephony, is afeature on some telephone networks.Ifa calling party places a call to a called partywhich is otherwiseengaged, and the called

party has the call waiting feature enabled, the called party is able to suspend the currenttelephone calland switch to the new incoming call (Typically, this is done by pushing theflash button), and can then negotiatewith the new or the current calleran appropriate time toring backifthe message is important, orto quickly handlea separate incoming call.

Callwaiting, then, alleviates the need to havea separatelineforvoice communications. Notethat since the signal to the called party is audible (for example, a 440 Hz beep every tenseconds in North America), callwaiting often can causeDial-up internet access connectionsto terminate, unless the modem supports the most recent V.92 modem standard. For thisreason, callwaiting is often disabled on shared voice/data telephonelines. In North America, the NANP uses *70 beforea call to suspend callwaiting forthat call. A stuttered then regulardial tone confirms the de-activation.

    Call conferencing

A conference call is a telephone call in which the calling partywishes to have more than onecalled partylisten in to theaudio portion ofthe call. The conference calls may be designed toallow the called party to participate during the call, orthe call may be set up so that the called

party merely listens into the calland cannot speak. It is often referred to as an ATC (AudioTele-Conference).

Conference calls can be designed so that the calling party calls the otherparticipants and addsthem to the call - however, participants are usually able to call into the conference call

    12

themselves, by dialing into a special telephone numberthat connects to a "conference bridge"(a specialized type ofequipment that links telephonelines).

Companies commonly use a specialized service provider who maintains the conference

bridge, orwho provides the phone numbers and PIN codes that participants dial to access themeeting orconference call.

Three-way calling is available (usuallyat an extra charge) formany customers on theirhomeoroffice phoneline. To three-way call, thefirst person, who is the onewho someonewishesto talk to is dialed. Then the Hook flash button (known as the recall button in the UKandelsewhere) is pressed and the otherperson's phone number is dialed. While it is ringing, flash/recall is pressed again to connect the three people together. This option allows callers to adda second outgoing call to an already connected call.
