MESSAGE FROM BRAD LEMMON EXECUTIVE GENERAL MANAGER – CEMENT AND LIME

It is hard to believe, but we are already nearly half way through 2018 – it only seems like yesterday that we were getting ready for the Christmas beak! It has certainly been an eventful start to the year, with a lot of shutdown activity around our sites. We also, unfortunately, experienced a major equipment failure with one of our mills at Birkenhead. I am very grateful for the significant effort made by a lot of people who assisted in achieving a complex repair – thank you.

We have also seen a lot of activity over the last few months in the area of safety. I am extremely reassured by the response we are seeing at all sites – with a particular focus on identifying areas of risk, and most importantly, taking responsibility to ensure corrective actions are implemented. Everyone has the authority, and should be proactive in stopping an unsafe situation or act. Following on the success of 2017, we are once again holding Morning Tea sessions, as I get around to each of sites. These are a great opportunity for me to get to meet as many people as possible, develop a good understanding the issues you might be facing and to hear about the many positive things that are being achieved right across Cement & Lime. I look forward to seeing you many of you over the next few months.

BEFORE AFTER

Kiln 4 shutdown, BirkenheadThe Birkenhead team, led by Ivan Winter, Engineering Manager SA, delivered a successful shutdown campaign for Kiln 4 in January. The shutdown was well scoped, planned and executed, following the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology.

Acknowledgement should also be granted to Ed Southwell, Tim Rochow and Robert Changwo for their assistance with quality inspections, which ultimately resulted in a reasonably trouble-free commissioning. This collaborative approach between SA & WA Operations and Procurement (represented by Anthony Giorgini) resulted in a shutdown that was delivered on-time and under budget.

MCI Port Kembla NewsReplacement and commissioning of the old HV switchboard completed in January. This replaces equipment installed in 1960 with current technology, thereby removing a major safety risk in regards to oil circuit breakers. This has also minimised the risk of unexpected plant outage relating to CM1 & 2.

Tell me about your role at Cockburn cement, what’s the favourite part of your job?

I work in admin at the Dongara Lime Plant, it is quite small with only 12 staff so my role is quite diverse which I love. I get to do a bit of everything and am always learning new things which I crave in a role.

When did you join Cockburn Cement, what’s your background and qualifications?

I completed a sports science degree then left Australia to travel. I came back to Australia just before the mining boom and worked for Rio Tinto as a plant operator in Tom Price. My husband was offered a role at a gas plant in Dongara so we moved South to experience 4 seasons in a year again. I joined Cockburn Cement at the end of 2015, I think having plant knowledge & SAP experience helped me get the job.

What attracted you to the role?

The people and the flexibility of the role.

Where would you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Hopefully still here, still learning new things and still having a laugh with my co-workers.

Outside of work, what do you love to do in your spare time?

I participate in triathlons and enjoy the training aspect of the sport. I also love the beach, the snow, travelling and eating lots of good food!
