Dedication and Acknowledgements

Throughout the years that it took to complete the Faulkner County Cemetery Census, I was helped along the way by many people. To name them all, would be difficult due to the passage of time and I would run the risk of omitting some. However, I would like to especially thank the following: Veradean (Johnson) McCord, Charlotte (Johnson) Moudy, Stephanie (Moudy) Weatherington, Glenna (Blair) Shumate, Suzee (White) Cia, Joe Melton, Connie (Hall) Weir, Lynita Langley-Ware, Desmond (Walls) Allen, Euna and Steve Beavers, Charles Parsons, and Vivian Hogue. I'm also grateful for and indebted to Terri Buster and Charlie Ward, who have made it possible for me to accomplish my dream.

This census is dedicated to my sweet, dear mother, Veradean McCord, my wise and understanding sister, Charlotte Moudy, and Suzee Cia, my tried-and true, faithful friend, who have continually supported my efforts to complete this long and difficult project. It is also dedicated to the memory of so many loved ones that have gone before us, whose lives changed our history and our perspectives of life. To my Lord and Savior, whom I thank for guiding me and watching over me as I walked the hallowed grounds and for giving me courage, strength, and determination.

Hawkins Cemetery

Location and Description This abandoned cemetery is located on the Abe Hawkins farm north of Mt. Vernon. It was apparently named after the property owners because there is no known connection between the members of the Hawkins family and the people buried here. The cemetery is surrounded by a barbed-wire fence to protect it from cattle. It is overgrown with weeds and underbrush. Some of the markers have been threatened by fallen tree limbs and general neglect. History There are two common links among the deceased at Hawkins Cemetery — the surname of Baker and their Kentucky roots. Syntha Baker married James M. Ricketts, Lida Baker married Cy Davidson, and Cynthia Baker married John G. Spradlin.

Thomas Richards was born in 1402 in Witney, Oxfordshire, England, and died on September 16, 1485. So begins the long history of the Ricketts family whose descedants ultimately settled in Faulkner County, Arkansas. These records, like so many other historical records, rely on many different researchers and resources. It is given here to help future family history researchers get a head-start and to lay a foundation for more accurate information. The spelling of "Ricketts" has taken many different forms over the centuries: Rickett, Ricards, Ricardes, and Richards. Thomas Richards married Emma Hervey in 1425 in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. He next married Alice Ricardes, perhaps a cousin or distant relation. Their marriage produced William Richards, who was born in 1448 in Shropshire, England, and died in 1470 in Melton Hall, England. William had a son named James Richards. James Richards was born in 1558 in Pitminster, Somerset, England, and died in 1608. He had a son named Thomas Richards, who was born in 1573 in Somerset, England, and died in Herefordshire, England, in 1594. He had three sons: Oswald, who died before his father;
