NOTE
The census ehubleration was carried out in full according to plan but the Government of India decided to restrict the tabulation for British India. Consequently the tables in this volume cover less than half the contemplated range and offer in effect only the distribution of the population by community and by province or state, district, tehsil and town. I
Opportunity has been taken however to sort wherever possible the 1/50 random sample taken in every area.
2. The slips in which the remaining unsorted information is to be found are stored in each province against a possible reopening of tabulation in happier circumstances.

l-AREA, HOUSES AND POPULATION
1. This ta,ble shows for each district its area, the number of towns and villages, the number or occupied houses and the total urban and rural population, male and female in the province. Similar figures are given 'for 9 states of the Chhattisgarh States Agency and one state of the Bhopal Agency.. The remaining 6 states of the Chhattisgarh States Agency which were hitherto included in the C. P. and Berar Census Reports were allotted this time to Bihar for the purpose of enumeration and tabulation and their statistics win appear in the Bihar tables. The difference between some of the areas shown here and those in the corresponding table of 1931 is due to transfers to Orissa and adju~tments within the province as well as recalculation of areas as explained in the flyleaf of table IL
2. The area given in this table and Provinciai Table I in some cases differ because the figures given in this table were adopted from the district figures given by the -Survey of India while in Provincial Table I, the tehsil figures furnished by the Deputy Commissioners were adopted according to the instructions from the Census Commissioner for India.
3. The urban population is 2,189,805. Excluding towns which have less than 5,000 population the urban population is 2,152,406 and the urban/rural ratio 10: 75. ,

II-VARIATIO~ IN POPULATION DURING FIFTY YEARS
This table compares the' population as ascertained at the census of 1941, of each district in the Centrl'tl Provinces and Berar and the States of the Chhattisgarh and Bhopal Agencies (nine of Chhattisgarh and one -0£ Bhopal) with that of the 5 previous censuses. The figur'es of the previous censuses differ from those shown in the previous census reports owing to subsequent transfers of territory from one district or state to ,another, within and without the province and also to the recalculation of area. The effect of these changes on the populat·on of the districts or states concerned has been calculated and the figures adjusted accordingly.
The following are the dist:r;icts and states for which transfers of territory have taken place :Between 1881 and 1891.-' Mandla, Balaghat and SeOlli. 13etween 1891 and 1901.-Nagpur, Seoni, Hoshangabad, Nimar, Betul, Mandl a and Balaghat. Between 1901 and 1911.-Saugor, Narsingpur, Mandla, Balaghat, Hoshangabad, Nimar, Betul,
Chhindwara, Chanda~ Drug, Raipur, ~ilaspur, Amraoti, Akola, Buldana and Yeotmal.
Between 1911 and 1921.-Damoh, Seoni, Hoshangabad, Chhindwara, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, • Balaghat, Raipur, Amraoti, Akola, Buldana, Yeotmal and Kanker State.
Between 1921 and 1931.-Drug, Raipur, Amraoti, Akola, Buldana, and Chhuikhadan State. Between 1931 and 1941.-Raipur, Bilaspur, Sal!gor, Damoh, Hoshangabad, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara
and Seoni. An area 1,432 square-miles f~om ~~ district and an. ar~a of ~ square mjles ... om Bila~1lr-district I·
