FOREWORD

The Council of the Institute of Brewing considers thatits Centenary in 1 986 should be marked by a positivecontribution to the future well-being of its membersand the Industry, and not only by celebration of pastachievements.

In view of its long and close association with theBrewing Research Foundation, the Council has decidedthat its major Centenary project will be to raise funds tofurnish and equip a new meeting room to be provided atthe Brewing Research Establishment, Nutfield, Surreyand to be known as Centenary Hall. This is consideredto be a worthy and constructive objective, entirely inkeeping with the early, continuing and future aspirationsof the Institute, to further the advancement of educationin the science and technology of brewing and associatedfermentation industries.

That the Brewers' Society has approved the provisionof improved BRF lecture/meeting facilities, recognisesthe increasing use made of BRF for symposia, workshops,meetings, etc, at specialist, national and internationallevel.

A minimum Centenary Appeal target of £30,000has been set for furthering the educational aims andobjectives of the Institute, especially in relation to the newCentenary Hall.

(It is very much hoped that the target will be sufficiently

exceeded to provide the beginnings of a fund to be usedby the Institute for educational bursaries, scholarships,travel, etc for students seeking careers in the Industry.

In launching this Centenary Appeal, I am pleased toreport that a number of companies large and small havealready pledged financial support for this deserving cause.

May I urge all members, companies and authorities,either associated with or sympathetic to the work andobjectives of the Institute of Brewing, to make a financialcontribution to our Centenary Appeal. We believe thatthis project offers a unique opportunity to make asubstantial educational investment for the benefit of allconcerned with malting, brewing, distilling and relatedscience and technology.

HISTORYFounded originally in 1886 as the Laboratory Club by DrEdward Moritz and a group of brewing chemists who metin a London coffee-house to discuss scientific problemsof common interest, the Institute of Brewing was formallyestablished in 1890. In 1904, this London-based insti-tution amalgamated with similar bodies in other parts ofBritain to form a national organisation in the brewing andassociated industries, with particular interests in researchand the establishment of scientific/technical standardsand qualifications.

Today there are seven United Kingdom regionalSections, the Australia and New Zealand Section, andthe newest, the Central and Southern African Section.London includes in its register, members of many nation-alities employed in brewing and associated industries allover the world.

AIMIn 1976 the Institute was registered as an Educational

Charity, reflecting its aim:

'The advancement of education, especially inthe sciences of brewing, fermentation anddistillation'.

In pursuance of this aim, the Institute seeks to maintainand enhance scientific/technical standards for the benefitof over 3,500 members, and the brewing and associatedindustries in the UK and overseas.

BREWING RESEARCH FOUNDATIONSince its earliest days, the Institute of Brewing has takenan active interest in all forms of brewing research. AResearch Fund Scheme was established under the chair-manship of Mr (later Sir) Sydney Nevile in 1920, toprovide funds for relevant research projects in variousuniversities, colleges, and laboratories. Subsequentlysubscriptions were collected from companies on a'barrelage produced' basis, as the scope of the work to beundertaken grew in its range and complexity.

In 1931, a Commission of Enquiry appointed by theInstitute's Research Fund Committee, recommended thatall experimental work should as far as possible be con-centrated at one central Research Institute. Progresstowards this end was relatively slow, partly due to theintervention of World War II, but following a guaranteeof the necessary financial backing from the Brewers'Society, in 1948, a suitable property was purchased atLyttel Hall, Nutfield, Surrey.

Thus in 1951, was established the Brewing IndustryResearch Foundation with Sir Ian Heilbron as the firstDirector.

These laboratories (now known as BRF) are todayregarded as an outstanding example in the world of co-operative research, fostered and largely financed by themember firms of a single Industry, and directed for thebenefit of all.

For the Institute of Brewing, it was a proud momentand just reward for its senior members, who aided by theIndustry generally, had worked assidously to establish acentralised, independent research centre.

Today this Research Establishment with a staff ofscientists, technicians and research workers, isadministered under, the general direction of the Councilof the Brewing Research Foundation. The latter iscomprised of nine members of the Brewers' Society andsix from the Institute of Brewing, whose President isnormally the Vice-Chairman.

In recent years, membership of BRF was widened toinclude more non-brewing companies associated withthe Industry, whilst many overseas brewing companiesare valued and long-standing members.
