The 2010 -2011 school year has come to a close with Graduation on June 29th . We are very proud of the accomplishments of our graduates and all of our students for this school year. We are pleased to report that 238 students have achieved Honour Roll status - that is an average of 80% or higher for courses taken this semester. Many other students came close to reaching an average of 80%. We also have 52 of our graduating students being awarded Ontario Scholar Certificates, 44 of our graduates being awarded DSBN Academic Gold Medallions and 16 of our graduates being awarded DSBN Academic Silver Medals. It seems like just yesterday when I first arrived at Centennial. It has been an event filled year with many activities, accomplishments, struggles and, sadly, tragedy. One thing I‘ve come to realize is that our school community has a kind and generous character and that people here, students and staff, really support each other and the community. Not only do our students achieve great things in academics, athletics, the arts, and extracurriculars but they are also good citizens. We wish all of our graduates well as they go on to work, further their education or contribute to community life. To our returning students we wish them a safe summer and encourage them to get involved in something over the summer that contributes to their community and/or family. It is also time to say goodbye to some of our staff. Ms. Bernicky, Mr. Nero, Ms. Butters, and Mr. Snopek will be pursuing other teaching opportunities. Mr. Sarvis will be teaching at Westlane; Ms. Wiseman is going to E.L. Crossley and Fort Erie; Mr. Moyer will be teaching at Port Colborne; and Mme Kimber is going to Grimsby. The Welland Centennial community would like to thank these teachers for their many years of involvement with our students. We are also saying goodbye to our Vice-Principal, Ms. Ann Kennerly. It has been my pleasure to work with Ms. Kennerly who has served the Centennial community for the past four years. Ms. Kennerly believes in our students and is a strong supporter of student success. She has advocated for students and worked out plans for many at-risk students that have helped them reach their graduation goals. I know she is very proud of their accomplishments and of the successes of all of our students. We wish Ms. Kennerly the best of luck in her new position as Vice-Principal at Port Colborne High School. We thank her sincerely for her dedication and support of students and staff here at Centennial and know that Port Colborne will benefit from her commitment to student success. We are welcoming Mrs. Jane Kopp who is our new Vice-Principal, Mr. Sardella to Guidance, Mr. Burratini to Student Success, Mr. Bolle to Mathematics and Science, Mrs. Drake and Ms. Kirouac to French Immersion. We look forward to the energy and ideas that they will bring to the Welland Centennial community. Finally, I wish every member of the Welland Centennial community an enjoyable and activity filled summer vacation. For our returning Cougars we are looking forward to your continued involvement in our great school and, to your continued success in the classroom and co-curricular activities.

O.S.A.I.D.

Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving has been running for five years at Centennial. It is our goal as a group to raise awareness around the dangers of impaired and distracted driving. Our group of more than 25 students and 2 staff advisors have been working very hard to achieve that goal. We invited our feeder schools along with our grade nine students to our National Students Against Impaired and Distracted Driving Day and had a mock crash for our senior students. We ran a campaign pledging to leave your phone alone on National Remembrance Day for road crash victims. You can take the pledge at leavethephonealone.ca. Thanks to the O.P.P. we had a rollover simulator demonstrating what happens to the occupants of a car when you roll over with and without your seat belt. We had our third annual pasta dinner raising money to attend the National Conference and for scholarships. Thanks to the Phoenix Lodge #535 of Fonthill 13 of us attended the CYAID conference. We organized our third annual Region 12 conference. We had 10 schools and 100 delegates attend. Thank you, Mr. Laughton and his culinary arts students for preparing a delicious lunch. May 11, 2011 was the global launch for The Decade of Action for road safety. After reading a message from the United Nations Mothers Against Drunk Driving showed their powerful multimedia presentation to the entire school. We had activities in the cafeteria at lunch including the Breathalyzer machine thanks to the Niagara Regional Police.

OSAID would like to congratulate our graduates who have been recognized by the Niagara Region Road Safety Committee for the efforts to keep Niagara‘s roads safe. Tallulah Learn, Paige Eedens, Danielle Heaton and Kelsey Kiers have all done a terrific job as members of our group. Each graduate receives a scholarship on behalf of Centennial OSAID. Tallulah Learn was the Region 12 rep for the province. She has worked tirelessly and is an inspiration to others. Congratulations Tallulah for receiving the Aviva Insurance Scholarship, 1 of only 3 given provincially. We congratulate Madison Chatwin and Tyler Agnew who have been elected region 12 rep and associate rep respectively. Centennial has held this honour three years running.

A group is only as strong as its individual members Mrs. Pelissero and Mrs. Iannetti would like to thank all of our members for their part in making our year a success. To our graduates we wish you every success and to our returning delegates we look forward to next year. We all have a part to play in road safety.

Student Council

The past semester has been an eventful one for Students‘ Council. It began with traditional

Valentine‘s activities such as the Matchmaker exchange and our Semi-Formal dinner-dance in

February. The spirit week, held in March, culminated in a very exciting staff-student volleyball

game. The highlight of April was the school-wide Easter Egg hunt. The fierce competition

throughout the school made one thing abundantly clear: Centennial loves chocolate! During a

school-wide assembly in May, Bob Upgren delivered a very inspirational challenge to students to

make the most of their gifts and talents. His presentation concluded with him painting a beautiful

canvas that is now hanging in the cafeteria as a constant reminder of his message.

This year‘s Cougarfest was held on Wednesday, June 1st. After recognizing the amazing efforts

and talents of our student body at the awards assembly, everyone enjoyed a BBQ in the

courtyard before heading outside for an action packed, sunny afternoon. Spectators cheered as

fellow students competed on the inflatables, sumo-wrestled, boxed, cooled down on the slip and

slide, tried to avoid getting tagged by a dodge ball, and took on the staff in the annual soccer

game. A special thanks goes to our wonderful chefs for the delicious BBQ lunch, all of the staff

for their support and supervision, and all of the students for their spirited participation.

Students‘ Council is currently busy preparing for the year‘s final hoorah: Prom. The celebration

will be held at John Michael‘s Banquet and Conference Centre in Thorold. The event will mark a

well earned rite of passage for this year‘s graduating class.

A special thanks goes out to all members of the 2010 - 2011 Council for making this year such a

memorable one. Your efforts are appreciated by the staff and student body alike!

LOGO design winners announced!

musical logo winning design has been awarded to

grade 11 student: Bethany Heaton! Many

congratulations!! Second place was awarded to grade

11 student: Rebecca Gibbins for her intriguing font

design. Both designs will be combined for use in all

marketing and advertising material for the 2012

musical: The Music Man.

Arts Department

Centennial honoured at

Sears Drama Festival! This year the Drama Department produced a one-act adaptation of Oscar Wilde‘s ―The Importance of Being Earnest‖ and this production was our entry in the Sears Drama Festival in March. The show was extremely well received by audiences and was generously honoured in the festival. Besides winning top honours as one of the Outstanding Productions of the District festival, individual awards also went to Rob Colonico for his performance as Lady Bracknell, and Faith Bunyan for her outstanding set design. Winning the coveted Peltoma Award for outstanding production meant that this show moved on to the Regional level of the festival which was held in Hamilton this year. Again, Centennial‘s excellent production received many awards, including another one for outstanding set design, individual acting awards for Katrina Frausel and Nyle Collins, and an award of excellence for the entire cast. This was the first time Centennial had the opportunity of moving to the regionals and it was a rich

class presented a rich and varied evening of theatre as they performed their drama anthologies. They ex-plored contemporary themes through a wide selection of drama forms and expressions. Congratulations to all the students who took part – it was an excellent evening of theatre!

Centennial now offers a Specialist High Skills Major in

ARTS & CULTURE A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific area (Arts & Culture) while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and assists in their transition from secondary school to college, university, apprenticeship training, or the workplace. This year Centennial offered an Arts & Culture SHSM for the first time, and students enrolled in this program enjoyed many types of specialized training, reach ahead opportunities and experiential learning.

During the year, special presenters brought a variety of workshop opportunities to our students, including stage combat with Jamie Treschak, focussing on sword fighting, vocal workshops with Melissa Shriner, acting workshops with David Langlois, and a lighting workshop with Ken Garrett from Brock to name a few. Experiential learning also included attending the Zacada Circus School in Hamilton and theatre workshops at the Classical Theatre Project in Troronto. We expect that the program will continue to grow and expand as we have more students signing up for this exciting opportunity.

Grade 10 Drama Class tackles

difficult topic This year the Grade 10 drama class ended their semester with a play entitled ―Hiding in Plain Sight.‖ This play, which was written by the class, dealt with the difficult topic of school bullying. Recognizing that bullying is a serious and pertinent topic for discussion and exploration, the class felt motivated to create realistic scenes in which the devastating effects of bullying were made clear. The students did an excellent job of presenting their work and all who saw it praised their work. Their work was bold and courageous and they should be congratulated for bringing this important work to the stage.

The Music Man comes

to Centennial!! Plans are already underway for next year‘s produc-tion of Meredith Wilson‘s THE MUSIC MAN. This affectionate and classic salute to small-town values of a bygone era, follows fast-talking travelling sales-man Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City into buying instruments and uniforms for a kids‘ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn‘t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain‘s fall. This classic of the Broadway stage features such memorable numbers as 76

Trombones, Till there was you, and Goodnight my Someone. This show features a large cast and an even larger chorus. As always, we encourage everyone to become involved.

We also plan to include some future Cougars in our production, so we will be looking for stu-dents in grade 4-8 to join the team. More information will be available through our family of schools and on the official website for our production:

The website is still under construction and is constantly evolving, but currently you can visit the site to hear all the musical numbers, see a list of characters and read the synopsis of the story to begin to familiarize yourself with the show.

Musical rehearsals will begin in September and auditions for solo roles will not take place until November, so we encourage all students to come out to rehearsals and find out what it‘s all about. Who knows, there may be a budding star out there who hasn‘t discovered their voice yet and it‘s time to give it a try.

The performance dates will be April 26, 27, 28, May 3 and 4, 2012.

Dance

This past semester Centennial introduced dance into the curriculum. It gives students an opportunity to earn high school credits (Gr. 9, 10, 11,12) in dance. In addition to learning technique in a variety of styles that include jazz, ballet, modern, African, Hip Hop, and Ballroom, students also learn how to choreograph dances and develop their performance skills. They learn to respond to, analyse, reflect on, and evaluate dance performances. They also develop their understanding of the role of dance in various cultures, societies, and historical periods. As well, students gain health, anatomy, and kinaesthetic awareness through dance. They also learn choreographic techniques, dance history, anatomy, and dance critique. Students have performing opportunities in the school as well as in the community.

Centennial Dance Crew

This year the new Centennial Dance Crew (CDC) started up with a bang! After auditions in February, the dancers started rehearsals for a number of events.

Flash Mob

The first event was for the 22nd

Annual Niagara College Seafood Gala at the Fallsview Casino in April. The dancers kicked off the evening with a Flash Mob that include the Centennial dancers dressed as servers and joining in on a dance that include 80 local dancers. It was a huge success and the Dance Crew received many compliments on their performance.

Dance Day at Centennial

The dancers participated in a day of workshops led by professional dancers including two teachers from So You Think You Can Dance Canada. The workshops included African, Jazz, Lyrical, Ballroom, Musical Theatre, and Hip Hop.

Niagara's Best Dance Crew

The Centennial Dance Crew participated in a local dance competition at St. Catharines Collegiate. The team performed very well and earned a 5

th place for their funky Jazz routine. In

addition, Shannon Bederski earned a 3rd

place for her fantastic Irish Dance solo.

Rose Festival Parade

The dancers participated in the 50th Rose Festival Parade and are looking forward to doing it

again next year.

Cats Band 2011

We, in Cougar Country, are very proud of our Cats Band! The Cats Band has performed on a number of occasions this year including our Arts Road Show concerts at our feeder schools, the Winter Concert and Spring Concert. Their medleys all arranged by our own Mr. DiMartile included this year an R&B Medley, The Girls Unplugged Medley, the Brill Building Medley, and a Disco and Funk Medley. Arts Trip to New York

New York City 2011

New York City is fast becoming the favourite destination for our Arts Department! Our 2nd

trip to the Big Apple (our bi-annual department adventure) departed bright and early Thursday morning, April 7, 2011. Some students pictured were on our first trip in 2009! Some students in grades 9 and 10 on this trip were already making plans for their return visit in two years! Highlights on this trip included Ground Zero where we saw the Freedom Tower in progress, The Statten Island Ferry, Wall Street, Radio City Music Hall, Phantom of the Opera, Times Square, a comedy improv show, the International Museum of Photography, and a birds eye view of Manhattan from the top of the Empire State Building. All agreed the all time favourite had to be the tour of the Apollo Theatre where many music greats were discovered! We will be returning to New York City in 2013 for a brand new itinerary so plan ahead to be with us!


Welland Rose Festival Parade, June 2011

This year was the 50th anniversary of the Welland Rose Festival and the Grand Parade took place

on Sunday June 19th . For the first time in many years, Welland Centennial Secondary School

had an entry in the school category. We are proud to show our school spirit and support the

Welland community and the Rose Festival. Our energetic and spirited group consisted of a large

decorated float accompanied by a terrific dance/cheer team organized by Ms. Wylde. The group

entertained the crowd with live performances starring our singing sensations Darcy Feagan and

Cassandra Stuart who belted out tunes all along the parade route. Our dance/cheer team

dazzled the crowd with their innovative dance routine coordinated with the moving float and our

live singers. The float included student representatives of clubs, activities and programs such as

OSAID, the Environment Club, our Specialist High Skills majors in Construction, Hospitality &

Tourism, and Arts & Culture, English, and Science. The Cougar mascot charmed the children

along the route (thanks to Dylan Ryerse for braving the heat in costume).

Our many thanks go to the staff team who organized the parade group: Mr. Krasnay, Mr.

Seebach, Ms. Wylde, Ms. Thibault, Mr. Braun, Mr. Snopek, Mr. Colonico and Ms. MacKinnon. A

special thank-you goes to Jeremy Cox of Cox‘s Home Hardware and Building Centre for

providing the flatbed truck for our float and for driving us in the parade.

We are already looking forward to next year‘s parade and continuing what we hope will become a

school tradition!

Minister of Education Visits Welland Centennial

On Monday June 13, 2011 the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Education, visited Welland

Centennial Secondary School. The Minister was greeted by board officials, school staff and some

student ambassadors before visiting Mme Pellisero, Mme Kimber and Mr. Frazer‘s classrooms. While

in Mme Pellisero‘s classroom the Minister made an announcement regarding French Immersion pro-

grams. She stated that French Immersion programs will be available to students in applied level

classes starting in September 2013. Some time is needed to develop the program and curriculum for

these courses so that is why they will not start until 2013. Our students reacted positively to this

message and felt this would create more opportunities for students. One student asked, ―Does that

mean I could take math at the applied level and still stay in French Immersion?‖ The answers to these

questions will follow as more details about the program become available over the next year. After

visiting Mme Kimber and Mr. Frazer‘s classrooms and talking to students for a while, the Minister left for

another appointment. As she left she commented on how impressed she was with our students and our

school. Our students and staff are to be congratulated for doing such an excellent job hosting the

Honourable Minister for her visit.


Geography Department

It has been a busy spring for Geography students making visits to Short Hills Park, Niagara Falls, and Toronto. Grade 9 students did a global positioning exercise in Short Hills Park while enjoying a sunny day in an otherwise rainy spring. Sunshine also greeted the Grade 9's in Niagara Falls but they still got wet on the Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara's Fury, and the Maid of the Mist.

Grade 12 students had an early morning train ride and a brisk walk up University Avenue in Toronto to visit the Royal Ontario Museum and tour the galleries of interesting exhibits. After a walk through several Toronto neighbourhoods students ended up back at Union Station and slept on the train ride home. A special thanks to the staff who chaperoned these valuable educational experiences.

Literacy Retreat

Thanks to Ms. Douglas and Ms. Bernicky who organized a successful Literacy Retreat at the District School Board of Niagara board office in St. Catharines which took place on February 4, 2011. The purpose of the Retreat was to help grade 10 students to prepare for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) which took place on March 31, 2011.

Writer’s Craft Tea

On Wednesday June 8, 2011, Mrs. Lomas-Gale's Grade 12 University Level Writer's Craft

class hosted a Tea where they displayed their writing Portfolios and presented a variety of

their creative writing pieces to an audience of invited guests. Based on the talents

displayed, a member of this class just may be the next great Canadian author.

Results of this Test along with a letter outlining the supports we have in place to prepare for the OSSLT next year will be mailed home with the June report card.

We were sorry to lose Mr. Anderson at the end of semester one, but we welcomed Ms. Benner back in semester two. We have also been lucky enough to have Ms. Bernicky and Ms. Butters working with us in our department this year. All your efforts have been appreci-ated and we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours.

Moderns Department

―Carnaval à la Cabane à sucre‖

This February, a group of Gr. 9 Core French students had the opportunity to

celebrate ‗Carnaval à la Cabane à sucre‘ (Winter Carnival at the Sugar Shack)

here in our own region at White Meadows Farms. This traditional Québecois

experience was full of activities including: a Sugar Bush Tour that included

sampling the various types of Maple Syrup; participating in Winter Carnival

Activities; a camp fire to relax and sip hot chocolate and hot apple cider; and a

delicious pancake and maple syrup lunch with musical entertainment provided

by Juno-Nominated French Canadian Historian, Mike Ford. Our group really

enjoyed this unique cultural experience!

Through the efforts of the Environmental Club

along with other contributing groups within the

school, Centennial now has an environmentally

friendly water bottle filling station. This system

provides easy access to cold, filtered water 24/7

and is conveniently located in the hallway outside

of Gym C.

The system was installed in May and has already

saved over 4000 plastic water bottles from land-

fills! There are plans to have a second system

installed in the cafeteria next year.

In September, at registration, we will be offering

personalized, stainless steel Cougar water bottles

for only $10.00.

Physical Education Department

Congratulations to all the Centennial Rowers on their great season! Three Centennial Cougars, Sarah Alakas, Jessica Smith, and Zach Voth put forth a huge effort and showed a lot of determination and dedication! The athletes participated in many Regattas during the season including : Saratoga Spring, in New York, The Mother's Day Regatta, The Head of the Welland Regatta and the Canadian Secondary School Championship against more than 300 schools. Good work by all athletes and congratulations to Jessica Smith who received The Rower of the Year Award at this year‘s Athletic Banquet.

Welland Centennial Athletic Fee

If you are participating in our extra curricular program as a member of any Centennial team,

you will be asked to pay a one time athletic fee of $30.00, even if you play multiple sports.

WHO? Any participating athlete of Welland Centennial.

WHY? Fee used to offset tournament costs, referee costs, transportation

Science Department

It has been another busy semester in the science department. In addition to our usual classroom

activities, we hosted Grade 6 students from our feeder schools for the Math and Science Olympics

in early April. Students enjoyed competed in an aluminum boat-building event.

Senior science students had the opportunity to travel to the Ontario Science Centre on April 27th.

They participated in a ―Physics Principles In Action‖ workshop, viewed the IMAX film ―Under the

Sea‖, visited a special exhibit entitled ―Nature Unleashed‖, and toured the other Science Centre

exhibits.

One of our Grade 12 students, Megan Matkowski, had the opportunity to be a student at the

Ontario Science Centre School for the second semester. While enrolled, she took grade 12

courses in chemistry, biology, and calculus, and worked 20 hours per week in the Science Centre.

She was involved with hosting the general public and elementary school groups. Megan lived in

Toronto during this opportunity and was able to return to Centennial to graduate with her class on

June 29th.

The science department staff wish to congratulate all of our graduating students. Particular recog-

nition goes to Donovan Chaffart, who is the first recipient of the Welland Centennial Secondary

School Science Scholarship for his excellent achievement in science courses.

It is one of the highest honours to be selected as a nominee for the Rotary Medalist Award, which exemplifies the Rotary motto: ―He who profits most, serves best.‖ The nominees were selected for their suitability by the teachers, and the graduating class then voted for the most deserving male and female candidates. Congratulations to the two male nominees, Reilly McIlhone and Scott Mannell and to the three female nominees, Danielle Banninga, Leah Clarke and Cecilia Ruiz-Lujan.
