Pentecost Sunday: Year A

GATHERING

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING PRAYER (in unison):Amazing Creator, you call us today, just as you called the disciples on the Day of Pentecost. You challenge and support us, revealing the brokenness of our communities, giving us the peace that our world needs. You point us to the pain of the cross, and then remind us of the joy of the resurrection. Transform us, O God, through the power of your Holy Spirit. Help us breathe deeply of the Breath of Life. Blow through our worship and change our lives forever. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP:Leader: Then I will pour out my spirit on all flesh, thus says the Lord.People: Send down the fire of your justice!Leader: Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,People: Send down the rain of your love!Leader: Your old shall dream dreams, and your young shall see visions.People: Send down your Spirit, breathe life in your people!Leader: Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,People: In those days, I will pour out my spirit.ALL: And we shall be people of God

HYMN: Spirit of the Living God UMH 393

INVITATION TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison):Loving God, we confess that we do not use the gifts You have given us. We worry that we will not have enough, and we hoard possessions and wealth. We do not stop to help others because we believe our time is more important. We lift up our own desires above the needs of others and put ourselves first, the exact opposite of what Jesus taught us. Forgive us. Call us into accountability. Remind us of the vast richness of the life You have given us, and that we always have something to give. Fill us with your Holy Spirit as you did with your disciples the day of Pentecost. Revive the fire in us. Amen.

Moment of Silence

WORDS OF ASSURANCE:“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” We are one. We are all needed and valued. You are part of the body of Christ. You are very much needed, very much loved. Share your gifts, because God needs you, and be part of God’s reign now and always. AMEN.

PENTECOST SUNDAY LITANY: God of rushing wind, coming from where it wants and going to where it wants,

Pour out your Spirit upon us.God of fire, flaring on gathered disciples and burning away their stubborn pride,

Pour out your Spirit upon us.God of miraculous speaking and hearing, amazing the faithful and riveting their attention to what is about to happen,

Pour out your Spirit upon us.God of the young who see visions, of the old who dream dreams, of male prophets and female prophets,

Pour out your Spirit upon us.God of wonders above the signs below, God of blood, fire and billowing smoke,

Pour out your Spirit upon us.You raised up Peter to prophesy on Pentecost, Peter to preach straight truth to a crooked generation, Peter to accuse people he loved of complicity in the death of Jesus.

Pour out your Spirit upon us.God of wind and fire and tongues, God of visions and dreams and prophecies, God of signs and wonders,

Pour out your Spirit upon us.You raised up Peter to preach Jesus to a skeptical audience, and with the two-edged sword of Peter’s word you cut through the armor of a crooked generation, you pricked their hearts and saved them.

Great God, send your Spirit to save us too.You sent your Spirit to assail hard hearts. You sent repentance and faith., baptism and forgiveness, teaching and fellowship, communion, and prayer.

Great God, send your Spirit to save us too.
