The Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance was created by LIBA in 2005 to align with its core mission –

“In pursuit of Excellence and Ethics”.

To propagate business ethics and corporate governance practices for the benefit of students and managers

ACTIVITIES

• BEACON is an annual conference drawing speakers from all over India to discussand debate a specific ethical issue.

• Nature of the Conference: Business / Corporate

• Themes revolve around Ethics in Business, Leadership and Ethics, Sustainability,Social Entrepreneurship, Accountability etc.

• AUDIENCE: Full time students of LIBA and invited Industry delegates.

• Speakers: Corporate Leaders from across different industries.

• Expected Outcome: The budding managers are enlightened about the ethicalchallenges that managers face in the contemporary business environment andthe measures taken by them to handle the situations.

• Learning Value: Students have Q&A session with the speakers to betterunderstand the perspective.

BEACON – THE ANNUAL BUSINESS ETHICS CONFERENCE

• From 2007, BEACON has been deliberating on various issues including inclusive

growth and sustainability in all spheres of management.

• BEACON 2017-18 focused on the theme “Leadership and Ethics for the New India”.

The conference had industry experts including Dr. V. M. Rajasekaran, CEO, ITC

Limited (Matches and Agarbathis Division), Ms. Jahanzeb Akhtar, Principal

Commissioner of Income Tax - Government of India, Mr C K Ranganathan, CMD,

CavinKare Pvt. Ltd., Mr. R. Ravichander, Group President and Regional Director, Yes

Bank Limited and CA M. Satya Kumar, Founder and CEO, Tycoon+ Advisors -

addressing various key aspects of ethical leadership in the context of new India.

BEACON – OVER THE YEARS

• Since 1998, The Mother Teresa Award for Corporate Citizenship – an annualaward given to socially responsible companies, is aimed at inspiring sociallyresponsible leadership.

• The objective of the Award is to honour a successful, profit making listedcompany that excels in its duty to all its stakeholders, via, value addition tothe shareholders, commitment to quality, customer satisfaction,harmonious industrial relations, welfare of workers and gender equity.

• A Jury constituted for the purpose, headed by Mr. N. Vittal – Former CVC,selects the best company every year.

MOTHER TERESA AWARD - INTRODUCTION

• Applications are invited from Listed Companies

• Nominations are invited from Industry Associations, Individuals, JuryMembers and Students of LIBA

• Applications will be scrutinized by the Center and companies will be selectedbased on pre-determined set of parameters

• Students collect information on selected companies

• Companies are invited to present before the Jury

• Q & A by Jury and Students, which the company representative answers

• Jury selects the best company

• The company is honoured at an Award Ceremony

MOTHER TERESA AWARD - PROCESS

• The students of LIBA actively participate in the pre-selection process - they doa homework to cross check the information provided by the companies andalso to gather additional published information about them.

• This enhances their knowledge about the companies and their CSR practices.

• This activity is also expected to make them understand the various CSR spend-heads in practice by different companies.

Fernando, the first Chairperson of the center is widely followed as a text book for thesubject in many colleges.

• JOURNAL PUBLICATIONS: The Faculty Members associated with the center makecontributions to the scholarly repository by publishing research / concept papersin refereed journals.

• CONFERENCES: The Faculty Members also participate and present papers inConferences and Seminars on related themes.

PUBLICATIONS

• In order to facilitate knowledge propagation on contemporary areas inBusiness Ethics and Corporate Governance, the center also organizesperiodical Panel Discussion for students.

• Experts from the area in perspective are invited to deliberate discussion,followed by Q & A session with students.

• Panel Discussions are organized as part of BMI initiative.

OTHERS – PANEL DISCUSSION

• Dr. Ajit Singhvi, a UK based Indian Philanthropist donated Rs. 65 lakhs thisyear, to promote ‘Good Governance’ at LIBA

• About Dr. Singhvi:• Dr. Singhvi is an Alumnus of Harvard Business School, Institute of Chartered

Accountants and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Dr. Ajit Singhvi hasworked in several countries with many multinational companies. Dr. Singhvipioneered the idea of ISR (Individual Social Responsibility) a parallel of CSR to supportand promote philanthropic activities in the society. He is the founder and promoter ofthe Ajit Singhvi Education and Training Trust.

OTHERS – DONATION FROM DR. AJIT SINGHVI

• Using the donation, LIBA is proposing to create “Dr. Ajit Singhvi Micro Center forResearch on Good Governance” under the aegis of Center for Business Ethics andCorporate Governance.

• A wide range of activities are proposed for the Micro Center, which will be planned andmonitored by the Center for Business Ethics. The activities are as follows:• Singhvi Lecture Series on Good Governance as part of BMI program, where eminent speakers

will be invited to deliver lectures on special and contemporary areas of Governance.• Training Program on Governance to be conducted as a CSR initiative to train corporate

executives on varied aspects of Governance, to be done in collaboration with ManagementDevelopment Center.

• Dr. Ajit Singhvi Conference on Governance, where bureaucrats, practitioners, academicians,research scholars etc. may be invited to deliberate on a specific conference theme.

• Dr. Ajit Singhvi Macro Research Project on Good Governance to be initiated, where we caninvite project proposals from Research Scholars / Practitioners from across India. A panel ofexaminers could be formed to scrutinise and select the best project.

• "Governance Digest" to be e-published by LIBA on a quarterly basis, focussing on a specifictheme or as a monograph invited from an expert on a special focus area.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED – Dr. Singhvi’s Donation

• Collaborating with International Universities for Faculty and Student ExchangeProgrammes focusing on Business Ethics and Corporate Governance.

• Launching a quarterly e-newsletter for the Center, highlighting center’s activities andcontemporary issues in Business Ethics and Corporate Governance.

• Developing a complete and dedicated microsite to highlight center’s activities over theyears.

• Partnering with Internal faculty members for research and publications.

• Collaborating with Industry Associations / Expert Bodies for Joint Programs on CorporateGovernance.

• Creating a ethics blog.

FUTURE PLANS FOR THE CENTER

• Establishing linkage with South Asian Universities for Faculty and StudentExchange programmes focusing on Business Ethics and Corporate Governance

• Creating an ethics blog in association with South Asian Universities, who havesimilar interests

• Providing an international perspective on ethics to students of LIBA throughinvited guest lectures and panel discussions by eminent personalities fromSouth Asian countries.
