2016 Annual Report January 28, 2017
CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL EQUITY (CEE) Academic Success Center & Greenville Boxing and Fitness Club
BACKGROUND: The Center for Educational Equity (CEE) is an amazing non-profit
organization founded in June 2000, after a series of articles in the Greenville News
spotlighted the shameful gaps between students.
MISSION: CEE mission is to provide opportunities for at-risk students and young
adults to benefit from success-oriented programs and experiences, especially designed to boost and transform their learning and behavior, to reduce school
disciplinary referrals, improve school attendance, school grades and graduation
rates, enrollment in college and local vocational training programs and to promote greater parental involvement.
FOUNDERS: CEE was founded by Coach Shakir Robinson, a championship sports coach and
certified Personal Fitness Trainer; Leola Robinson-Simpson, a former Greenville County School Board Trustee and current member of the S.C. House of Representatives; with the
support of a diverse CEE Advisory Board and dedicated volunteers.
HISTORY: During the first 7 years of operation, CEE sponsored a SATURDAY SUCCESS SCHOOL, from (2000-2001) at the Phillis Wheatley Center; from (2002-2007) at
Greenville Technical College, where 95% of students functioning below basic on the state PACT test rose to basic 40%, above basic 30%, and advanced 20%. There was also a
100% reduction in school disciplinary referrals and a 95% increase in Parent involvement during this period.
From 2007-2008 CEE operated at the Woodfield County Recreation Building in
Bellemeade, and from 2008-2009 at the Happy Hearts Park Recreation Building in
New Washington Heights. For the past 8 years (2009-present) CEE has struggled to operate the CEE Success Center and Greenville Boxing And Fitness Club in its own
building at 1191 Pendleton Street in Greenville’s historic West End, thanks to a state grant from Senator Ralph Anderson, and a County grant for a fire escape from Councilwoman
Lottie Gibson.
FOCUS: The CEE focus is on Academics, Athletics through USA Boxing for
Discipline, the Arts and Advocacy in partnership with Legal Services, Parental Involvement and Participation. This amazing program is producing youth who
are respectful, doing well academically in school; with few disciplinary referrals,
or bullying of other students.
PROGRAM HOURS: 9:00 A.M.-8:00 P.M.

CEE-TASC STUDENTS IN PINK, RAISE $1,489.00 FOR BREAST CANCER PATIENT
CEE/TASC students, coaches and volunteers are involved in much more than After-School Tutoring, Art, Fitness, and USA Boxing. “Giving Back to Others” for BREAST CANCER AWARENESS Month was adopted as a CEE/TASC Service Learning Project during the month of October. For 17 days, after the tutoring and fitness sessions, CEE students solicited donations for BREAST CANCER from cars passing by on Pendleton Street. These proud students did not wish to appear to be “begging”, so they offered free bottled waters and a wrapped cup cake with pink icing to those who gave donations. By the end of the month, they raised $1489.00 to be presented to a cancer patient.
CEE – TASC HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF
CEE students and volunteers also collected non-perishable food items, clothing and sneakers for HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF, to aid people who are still suffering in the low country of South Carolina. Donations and Collections were given to support local efforts.
