New Park Commissioner AppointedDan Monahan was recently appointed to the Board of Park Commissioners of the Centerville-Washington Park District. He has been appointed to serve a three-year

term through May 2016. Mr. Monahan is the 16th individual to serve as a park commissioner since the district’s formation in 1959. He replaces Bill Williams, who retired from the board after serving his third three-year term.

Mr. Monahan holds a B.S. from Ball State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Dayton. He is currently Senior Director of Global Professional Services at Teradata Corporation. He has also been active with the Centerville United Soccer Association (CUSA) as the Mead CUSA Cup tournament director for the past 13 years.

Nearly 30-year residents of Washington Township, Dan, his wife and four children, have enjoyed spending time in the Centerville-Washington Park District’s parks. “Our parks are a great source of pride for this community,” said Dan. “We are lucky to have dedicated open-space nature areas where our residents can enjoy all that nature offers. The Park District maintains a wide variety of competition venues for the community, including baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer and tennis. And let us not forget the many neighborhood parks that offer our residents areas to relax and play within walking distance of their homes.”

Fall is a time for appreciation. The appreciation of leaves changing colors, for each warm day that holds on from summer, and the time for

Thanksgiving. At the Park District we are especially thankful for our volunteers. Volunteers stretch the resources of the Park District further ensuring a greater return on your investment. In 2012, volunteers collectively gave 2,666 hours of service to the Park District. Thanks to the efforts of our joint volunteer coordinators, the program is growing and those service hours continue to rise.

The individuals that volunteer, the hours they give, and the type of work that they do vary greatly. From volunteers that help with special events — such as Paws in the Park, Mini and Haunted Trails, and the Luminary Walk; to scouts that build park benches, upgrade the nature play area, collect native seeds or coordinate a whole BioBlitz; to volunteers that assist or lead weekly and monthly nature programs,

Kiddie Krafts, and fitness walks, it is all vital to the success of the Park District programs and operations. Volunteers even help us in the office answering phones and working on special projects, and in the field monitoring wildlife such as birds and butterflies. An individual, family or group can also Adopt-A-Park and ensure that it is in tip-top shape by organizing yearly clean-ups or beautification projects.

If you see volunteers while you’re out enjoying the parks, please join us in giving them thanks. Perhaps as you reflect on what you are thankful for –– trails for walking, natural places to escape, open fields for playing soccer, playgrounds for children, tennis courts, and other Park District amenities are at the top or your list. If you have the time and inclination, we are always looking for more amazing volunteers to appreciate.

• Concept, Little Mound and Oak Grove Parks – Installing handicap accessible swings with matching funds from the Centerville-Washington Foundation.

• Iron Horse Park – Constructing a picnic shelter with restrooms.

• Oak Creek South Park – Enlarging the concrete waiting area around the skate park.

• Oak Grove Park – Adding a batting cage with matching funds from the Centerville Baseball Softball League. Installing a new fitness course with funds from the NatureWorks grant program.

• Robert F. Mays Park – Starting the first phase of development including grading and seeding, parking lot installation, and landscape planting thanks to a major donation from Bob Mays.

Park Improvement UpdatesPark visitors will soon experience new facilities and improvements at some of the parks in our district. Although some park projects have been delayed due to reductions in state funding and tax revenue, we continue to look for outside sources to supplement the Park District budget. We are thankful for the valuable partnerships that help improve the parks for all residents. Park improvement projects underway in 2013 include:

• Activity Center Park – Adding shade structures around the sprayground and re-painting the sprayground features.

• Bill Yeck Park – Planning the Centerville Station Road entrance, including a parking lot and renovating the historic Smith House for use as a public building with matching funds from the William and Dorothy Yeck Nature Fund.

Tree and Bench Dedication ProgramTrees and benches are available for purchase and placement in a park to commemorate a person, group or event. Trees are planted in November or December. For more information visit:

If you have ever gazed up at the nighttime sky outside the city limits you have probably noticed the vast expanse of stars that aren’t visible within urban areas. Light emitted from lamp posts, buildings and sports facilities increases visibility of the ground but hinders our ability to see the beauty of the evening sky.

This light pollution has become an increasing concern. Not only does it impact stargazing, but it also impacts nocturnal wildlife and energy consumption. Fortunately, we can all make a difference! Use exterior lighting only when necessary, use shielded fixtures and install lower wattage bulbs.

For more information regarding light pollution you can visit www.darksky.org and also plan to attend Fireside Eco-Chat: Starless Skies this fall (see page 10).

This program offers caregivers the chance to participate with their little one, as well as free time to socialize with the other adult companions.

Each café begins and ends with a learning station such as puzzles, blocks, art or a sensory table. After a little free play, we come together for a short program centered around the theme, which may include a story, song, activity or craft. Join us for lots of fun and a light snack. Registration is required.

Beginner Clinics: September 10 OR 126:00 – 7:30 p.m.The beginner clinic is recommended for those who have no experience, are still getting comfortable with archery or are looking for a review of the basics.

Intermediate Clinics: October 8 OR 106:00 – 7:00 p.m.To attend the intermediate clinic, participants should have previous archery experience, know all range rules, be familiar with equipment and feel comfortable shooting.

These clinics are designed to provide interested youth and adults with the basic knowledge required to participate safely in archery. Participants should use a conservative assessment of their skill level and/or their child’s skill level when selecting the clinic they would like to attend. Parents are welcome to observe youth but must be registered to participate. All equipment is provided but participants may bring their own with approval of the instructor. Registration is required.

Hunter Education Certification is designed for people with little or no knowledge of hunting or firearms and is required to purchase a hunting license in Ohio. For those who prefer to work at their own pace, Ohio offers a home-study version of hunter education. After downloading and completing the home-study manual, a final 4-hour completion session will be held at the Grant Park Nature Nook. The session will be led by certified Hunter Education Instructors and will cover firearms safety training, archery, outdoor safety, wildlife management, conservation and more.

Participants wishing to obtain certification must complete and bring all nine quizzes located in the manual in order to participate in this program. You must obtain a score of 80% or higher on the 100-question final to obtain certification.

Calling all dogs! This fun event, co-sponsored with the Washington-Centerville Public Library, includes contests, giveaways and demonstrations. Awards will be given for best costume, best trick, and best dog/owner look alike. Local vendors will be on hand to demonstrate their latest dog-related products and services.

Too often items are thrown away instead of being re-used. The Barter Bazaar brings people together to not only trade in their unwanted items for something more useful, it also provides an opportunity to meet others with a similar hobby.

Bring items you are willing to part with to Park District headquarters any time between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. November 4 – 7. Use your vouchers on November 8 to obtain items that others have made available.

Small items such as buttons, beads and fabric scraps should be bundled and not treated as individual items. The Park District reserves the right to refuse items deemed unusable, unhealthy or dangerous. All items not claimed by the end of the bazaar will be donated to a non-profit charity or used for Park District programs. All trades are final. Registration is not required.
