13th Annual Central DeWitt High School Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Welcome to Central DeWitt High School. Tonight we will honor four (4) Individuals, two (2) Distinguished Graduates and one (1) Team for their outstanding achievements and contributions to our schools. We believe that participation in extracurricular programs at Central DeWitt High School have served all of us well as an extension of the classroom. Activities play an important role in helping students develop a healthy self-concept and appreciation for commitment, integrity, and excellence. Our students have been exposed to lessons in competition, sportsmanship, and teamwork. These Hall of Fame inductees have been an integral part of extracurricular activities either as a participant, friend, or supporter. We hope you will enjoy this evening and join us in recognizing the 2015 induction class to the Central DeWitt High School Hall of Fame.

2015 Central DeWitt High School Hall of Fame Inductees

Duane Bierman

Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as an Individual of Central High School Duane Bierman was a 1996 graduate who excelled in marching, concert and jazz band. He participated in FB, Track, was senior class VP and NHS member. He earned a BA in Music from Wartburg College where he directed, performed and was selected to the Iowa Collegiate All-Star Band. He earned a Masters from Northern Colorado and Doctorate from North Dakota State in 2010. He is currently the Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. His percussion and brass compositions are published and he has won the Kennedy Center award for Original Music he composed and played in 2002. Tyler Driscoll

Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as an Individual of Central High School 2004 graduate Tyler Driscoll was an outstanding student-athlete, Yearbook Editor, member of NHS and Student Council. He was a 2X Letterman/Captain of the 2003-04 WaMaC Champion basketball team and 4X Letterman/Captain and 5X Drake/State medalist in track. In football, he was 3X Letterman, 2X Captain, 2X First-team All-District, First-team All-State and Captain of the Eastern Iowa team. He holds 14 top 5 rushing/scoring records. He was a 4X football Letterman, All-Conference player and NAIA All-American for St. Ambrose University. He is employed by the Department of Homeland Security: US Customs and Border Protection.

2015 Central DeWitt High School Hall of Fame Inductees John “Jack” Kirby Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as an Individual of DeWitt High School John “Jack” Devero Kirby was born in 1926 and an outstanding athlete during his era. Ensign Kirby was a commissioned officer on a Pacific destroyer during WWII. He was an outstanding guard on a successful basketball team in DeWitt and was a 4-year starting punter, outstanding running back and 1943 team Captain in football. In track he was part of the 2-mile relay that broke school/meet records while winning Drake and State titles including DeWitt’s first ever Class B State Indoor Championship in 1942. He helped the team win two Illowa titles in 1942 & 1943 and individually was a 2X winner in the 100, 220, and anchored the winning 880 Relay. Adria (Sheil-Brown) Huseth Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as an Individual of Central High School 2000 graduate Adria Sheil-Brown was one of the best all-around athletes ever to wear a Saber jersey. She was an All-Big Bend player in Volleyball and Softball and helped the track team win a Big Bend Title in 2000. She was a member of 3 State place winning relays including the State Championship 4 x 200 Relay in 2000. In basketball she was a 4X First Team All-Big Bend and 2X 1st Team All-District & All-State selection leading teams to Big Bend Titles in 1999 & 2000. She was the first female basketball player at Central to reach the 1,000 Point Club. Recently married, she is a licensed and registered dietitian for the National Pork Board. Randy Steward Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as a Distinguished Graduate of Central High School 1978 graduate Randy Steward is one of the premier collegiate wrestling coaches in the country. He was a HS Captain and 2X State Qualifier for Central, placing 3rd in 1978. He wrestled on the Iowa National Freestyle/Greco teams, placing 3rd in Greco. At Cornell College he was a 4X Letterman, team Co-Captain, 2X Conference Champion and 4X National Qualifier. He took over the Loras program in 1993 and is the all-time leader in Dual Meet Wins. He has coached 6 teams to National top 11 finishes, 64 National Qualifiers, 35 All-Americans, 15 Academic All-Americans and 3 National Champions. He has been an Iowa Conference Coach of the Year 4X. Robert Waggoner Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as a Distinguished Graduate of DeWitt High School 1954 DeWitt grad Robert Waggoner attended Harvard, graduating cum laude in 1958 and earning his MBA in 1960. He is the Chairman and CEO at BurrellesLuse, a media monitoring company. He has served as director/chair at Harvard University, the Dean’s Council at the School of Public Health and other committees/associations. He endowed a chair in Economics at Harvard and The Mary Ellen and Robert Waggoner Nutrition Science Fund, at Stanford Medical School. He is a Life Trustee of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and founder of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

2015 Central DeWitt High School Hall of Fame Inductees 1955 DeWitt DeHawk State Runner-up Track Team

Inducted for Outstanding Contributions as a Team of DeWitt High School With 18 Letterman and 10 seniors, the 1955 team would go from what Coach Birney predicted as “fair runners” to “the hardest working bunch he had ever had” by the end of the season. The team would finish as Runner-up in the State in Class B field. The team won 5 meets during the year as well as the Davenport Relays, Fulton Relays, Morrison Relays and District meet. They finished second at the Ilowa meet, the Gateway Classic and the State meet. At State the 880 Relay would finish second and the 400 Relay third with team members: Chuck Runge, Glen McCulloh, Bill Warnecke and Bill Dohrmann. The 2-mile Relay would take 4th at State behind Richard Fell, Don Metzger, Allan Godard and Allan Kluever. The Mile Relay of McCulloh, Warnecke, Frank Greve and Jerry Noel would take 4th. Individually they were outstanding as well. Richard Harring, a Nile Kinnick Scholar would take 2nd at State in the FB throw and Discus. David Drew would also finish as Runner-up in the Mile while breaking an Ilowa record that year at 4:33.5 and the best Class B time in the State. Richard Fell would finish 4th in the Half Mile and Chuck Runge would finish 5th that year in the 220 Yard Dash.

Instead of accomplishments while attending Central DeWitt High School (including DeWitt, Grand Mound, St. Joseph’s, and Welton Schools), nominees in this category could be considered for induction (but are not limited to) through intercollegiate accomplishments, professional, humanitarian, leadership, and/or lifetime achievements, and/or significant accomplishments to his/her community, state, or nation.
