School council have done a lot since the start of the half term! As we all know Mr McGuigan
is retiring as the head teacher and all in all with the short time he has spent in the school he
has done a great job. School Council had an interview with the people who applied to be the
new head teacher. We did the interview at Space@. The interview went very well and we will
now consider that information to find out the new head teacher! A big well done to Mark
Fletcher, who won the award for the Anti-Bulling Week slogan\poster which is shown below.
In Year 6, Miss Bates has done a lesson for anti-bulling and come up with some great ideas
to help!! For example, we said words that are not very nice, for Miss Bates to put on the
Smartboard and talk about and we discussed why we should not say things like that.
(Breaking News.Breaking News.Congratulations to Mrs Cooke who will be taking overfrom Mr McGuigan to be the new Head Teacher in September 2014)

Year 1 have been studying Electric
Rainbows in science They have been
looking at circuits. Mrs Shaw said all of the
children managed to light the circuit which
meant they have been working extra hard.
They have been studying fish and making
fact files about them. Some of the children
made collages which went up on their
display board outside of the classroom in
the shared area. As part of their topic they
researched fireworks on the laptops, they
gathered up the information to turn them
into leaflets to take home. Year 1 went around the school with partners to find different light
sources around the school; Mrs Shaw was very pleased when they came back as they could
tell her a lot about their work.
In art, the classes have been making
collages of rainbow fish, first their
teacher laid out a set of fish asking
them to choose the type of fish they
wanted to decorate. They stuck pieces
of paper and fabrics of many different
colours on the fish template. Mrs Shawasked them to bring in some fish-like
materials such as clothes with lovely
designs on them. They worked very
hard to make their rainbow fish the
best in the class. All the rainbow fish
were stuck on the window together like
a shoal of fish, brightly made,
colouring the glass. Also handfuls were chosen to go on the display.
In their topic they read a story which is now their favourite book, called Wild Fish mainly
about animals and their talents. They enjoyed the book so much, they wanted to read it
every single day.
Mrs Shaw took them into the garden to look at the different types of animals and their
habitats. The class found all different types of animals in the garden and they found this very
interesting to do.
In maths they have been focusing on money problems and subtraction. Mrs Shaw gave
them work to complete to help them practice the skills they had learnt.

Would You Like Some Fire With That BreadThis term Year 2 have been learning about the Fire of London. They have been working
hard to try and learn as much as they can.
Lets get messyYear 2 decided to get messy. They made some fab fiery houses
out of cardboard boxes and tissue paper. Lolly pop sticks made
great windows, doors and more on the houses. They tried to
make them look like the houses of Pudding Lane. Once these
houses and bakeries are finished and put together it will look
great! Mums and Dads enjoyed it very much as they were asked
to come in and take part in the building of the houses. There are
so many creative children in Year 2. Everyone loves a bit of mess
sometimes.
Magnificent maths
In maths, fractions have been their problem. They have been working on fractions and how
they work. When they finished working on fractions they went on to dividing and multiplying
difficult numbers. Worded problems are also what they have been working on. They tried
hard to understand the maths they are looking at.
Awesome art
In art they have been creating scenes from the
Great Fire of London and Pudding Lane. They
used tissue paper, lollypop sticks and card to
make the scenes and they looked fab.
Loveable Literacy
Samuel Pepys,
the man who
wrote a diary from the Fire of London was their main focus
in literacy. They wrote a diary as if they were Samuel Pepys
and did a good job. Miss Neil and Miss Talbot chose a piece
of work. It was hard but they decided on Suzanne who had
tried really hard.

As the blanket of snow covered the small cottage, the pretty girl pushed back
her curtain of brown hair and stared straight at the stars. A star shot into her
view as she made a wish, I wish toys would come to life! That night as she
tossed and turned, Katie who was 8 years old, climbed out of bed and padded
in to the kitchen to get a drink to help her settle. Meanwhile Amelia, a small
doll the size of two apples, stood up and walked. In her rubber shoes she
made no sound and her ringlets bounced happily around her gorgeous chinaface. Amelia blinked and stared through her shiny plastic eyes once more, then
turned and ran, leaving a minute, clean, white glove.
Waking up in the morning, thinking it may have all been a dream, Katie ran down stairs to
the kitchen and saw the glove, her mouth went dry! She swallowed twice, picked up the
glove and ran, her feet barley even touching the ground to the play room she shared with her
brother. There standing still on her stand was Amelia as pretty as a picture but this picture
had a misprint, a clean white glove was missing! Youre real! Katie shrieked
As real as you are. replied Amelia
That night Katie didnt even try to sleep, she waited tilleveryone else was
asleep, crept down stairs and pried open the play room door. Chaos
formed before her very eyes, solders in a line marching round the room
and her music box dancer was talking to a jack-in-a-box. The tiny painted
faces on the oil painting of children were moving. She could almost feel
the magic in the room! Even the Barbie doll was walking around the
room arm in arm with Ken. Her teddy was straightening his bow tie and
smoothing down his copper coloured fur. His eyes twinkled as he
walked towards her holding out his velvet paws. You really did find
out! His voice was soft and growly but sounded comforting to Katie. Can every toy come to
life? she questioned him, (she had called Treacle), he turned away from her Now Amelia,
did you tell her anything? he asked the pretty doll. She didnt answer looking at her lacy
socks and rubber shoes. No her voice was barley a whisper she seemed to be wishing
that the friendly teddy would just turn his attention back to Katie, who was feeling very lost in
the door way
Can you finish the story? There is a prize for the best KS1 and KS2
entry. Just write your ending to the story and give it to the Newspaper
Club (in Year 6, Red and Orange class). They will read every entry and
decide on the two winners which will be printed in the next CentralExpress. Good luck and remember Best Handwriting!

Open llHours gainOpen All Hours was a TV programme that wason in the 1980s. The show ended in 1985 and
they have decided to bring it back for a
Christmas special. Unfortunately Ronnie baker
died on the 3nd October, 2005 but the actor
Grandville (David Jason) is up and running
and ready for action taking over his role as
shopkeeper. This is a comedy show about a corner shop that sells everything. Other actors
in the show are, Stephanie Cole and Maggie Ollerenshaw. Well its been a long time since
the show Open All hourswas on air but its close to Christmas and Sydney Lotterby who
directs the show has been filming a new Christmas special. The shop Arkwrightsis placedon a street in Balby, Doncaster, quite near to school. The school Central Express newspaper
crew went down to the set on Clarence Avenue
to see what it was like. They saw David
Jason practicing for one of his scenes; he
was riding an old fashioned bike across the
set. The crowd was very large and full of
excited people coming to see the
rehearsals and maybe the recording of the
show a little bit later.
Many people were watching as well so itwas hard to see what was actually going
on. We interviewed lots of people that were
there. One woman had been there from
8am in the morning. WOW! Filming had
started at 7am and finished at 7pm. Its a
long day of hard work and determination for
the actors and actresses. The lady also said
she has a signature from David Jason. Guess what, the woman is Mrs Wards daughter. To
remind you Mrs Ward is our old dinner lady that worked here. It was so crazy if you lived in
the street because when you walked out of your door there were lots of people. Security waspatrolling the street shushing and hushing you because of the filming.
Soon the new Christmas special episodes will on the TV. Surly, it will be a classic sitcom like
it always was. Its great that its up and running again on the TV. It should be fun to see what
the writers have in store and it was recoded right on our very own door step!

When teachers are not at school, what do they do? Do
they power glide, bungee jump or watch The Chase on
TV? Do they have 1000 cats or a Library? Do they go toparties every night? Yes there really are a lot of things we
wonder about teachers. We have chosen to eliminate
some of these questions and expose what one of the schools teachers does in their spare
time.
Cats!!!!!
Year six red class teacher Miss
Fryer is mad on cats! Miss Fryer
has around 29 students who are
all sick of hearing about
CATS!!! Here is some photo
evidence of her classroom. This
picture does seem to look normal
enough doesnt it? But with some editing we have
zoomed in! See what we mean cats! Why cats?
Miss Fryer finds a way to fit cats into every thing
she talks about the catastrophies of war, in maths
we do multipulcation, in art she has us drawing cats
cats, cats, cats - were sick of cats!
I mean look at her magazine that we found on her desk, Do we even
need to write the title? itsI Love CATS!
We thought it would be nice to show you what Miss Fryer is so
dottyabout
This is Jacob - wearing the tie that Miss Batesbought him for his birthday! Some of her pupils are
believing rumours that are circulating regarding Miss
Fryer and the fact that she may be Cat Woman and is
probably disguised as a teacher. Now you know what
Miss Fryer does out of school!
Look out for our next victim guest to be interviewed!

The time has come for Christmas trees and presents. But why do wecelebrate this festive holiday? , because of Jesus the day the Son of
God was born, but with every individual snowflake that falls from the
sky there is one excited child getting into costume for the Christmas
Born to perform
As you may know, the school performs the Nativity every
single year, rain, snow, wind or sunshine the show goes on.
They have the songs too, so its a musical as well. Playing in
the nativity there are Reception and Nursery children. This is
really a great thing to do, let alone watch! We were all were
in the Nativity once upon a time, whether we were sheep,
cows or even Mary. Whether an angel or a star, the nativity
moments are more memorable than anything else.
A Day with the Stars
Now for the stars themselves, Nursery and Reception. The Nativity was held in
the hall on the stage (which had to be cleverly assembled beforehand). Mary and
Joseph were played by Yvie and Kenden and the star was Jessica. They captured
the part very well and always kept in time with the music. Nurserys singing was
wonderful and their voices always stayed in tune. The classes performed to the
whole school but at different times so we all got to see it before any of the parents.
We watched the dress rehearsal with Mia and Georgina from Year 6. The costumes were amazing
even though they were plain it set the mood very Christmassy. There actions were right on time and
there were no jerky movements made at all.

Bravo Brava
There performances were held on the 11th
December at 2pm as well as the 12th at 9am
and were extraordinary. The children seemed to be enjoying themselves extremely and
they got such a loud applause it was amazing. There first performance was for Year
3 and 4 obviously this would be a lot of pressure but they were perfect
never putting a hand out of place.

Year 3s topic is robots! Robots that move, walk and through down what an
exciting topic. To make these robots they had to be all kind of scientists/
engineers and do all this crazy technology stuff. With all that going on, this isreally the topic to beat.
Marching in to Battle
Forward, March, left, head Wait, what? These kids
didnt battle - the robots did! Robot Wars have taken
place in school. The clashing of metal machines and
angry androids. Children in Year 3 became mechanicalexperts as they designed their own robots. The work
they put in was incredible. They started their topic with
building immense robots out of Lego, Knox and
construction sets. So these every marched into battle.
We spoke to Sulaiyman, a boy in Mrs Stephensons
class who particularly enjoined the robot wars and was
said to have been very good at it. Next we spoke to a
young girl who mostly enjoyed making it and she told
us among other things that her dream robot would be
pink and have stars on it.
Iron Man picnic huh?
The last we heard from Tony Stark aka Iron Man, he was
avenging the earth alongside the other superheroes. But
wait, this isnt the Iron Man we were talking about. This Iron
Man was amonstrous, robotic
beast said to be dead
and buried under a
hill - on Picnic Hill. But
our sources tell us
otherwise, as Iron Man has awoken and broken out, disturbing
a family who had been picnicking there. Year 3 have been
reporting about this disturbance.
Our year 3 teachers - Mrs Stephenson and Mrs Bedford - had set the children to work out what hadhappened and why. Now one of these wonderful writers from year 3 (Sulaiyman) will now show you
with a wonderful piece of writing.

Vicious VikingsRecently Year 4 has been on an exciting trip to the Jorvik Centre in York, this is a place
where children and adults can learn about Vikings in an exiting way. Whilst they were there,
they went on a ride called The Dig. This is a ride that shows you where the Vikings live,
what they ate, and where they went to the toilet! Another part of the trip was when they went
into a room with armour inside. A man talked to the children and teachers about what the
Vikings used the armour for (and not for slaying dragons!)
When they arrived at school again they drew a picture of Vikings and
wrote about where they lived and what they ate.
MathsIn maths the children in Year 4 are learning the grid method so that
they can times bigger numbers easer! They were also practising
their numbers on a number line to learn how to use a number line.
Last but not least, they have been learning how to times by ten, one
hundred and one thousand, and how to divide by ten, one hundred
and one thousand too!!iteracyIn literacy they were writing a letter to their parents (Mum, dad, grandparents etc) to
persuade them to come to their caf. When the caf opened in school they sold pizza,
pancakes, tea, coffee, biscuits with sugar on and tacos and much more!

TERRI LE TUDORSThis half term, Year 5 has been learning about Tudors. Here are some of the lessons they
have been doing.
In maths they have currently been learning how to chunk and in the mornings as soon as
they come in they have mental maths tests on paper.
Yr 5 has taken turns to monitor in the dinner hall. There are lots of jobs such as scraping
plates, refiling water jugs and helping little children. They have a selected group of children
to work with all week then they swap over to more children for the next week.
In literacy they have been writing about the battle of Bosworth story in their point of view.
They have been matching up tutor crimes to their punishments. They have also been on a
residential trip to Whitemoor Lakes, Staffordshire. Here they had the chance to take part in
all sorts of outward bound activities and for some the chance to sleep away from home forthe first time! All those who went said they enjoyed it.
In Art they have been painting wonderful portraits of Tudor monarchs such as Henry VIII,
Anne Boleyn and Mary I.

This half term Year 6 are learning about the
Blitz.
Magnificent Museum
Around the beginning of half term, all the
pupils in Orange and Red class took a trip to
Doncaster Museum. Inside there are all sorts
of artifacts and information about the history
of Doncaster. They looked at the WW2
section. Everyone had a booklet to fill in. The
booklet had different questions about different
events. One of the questions was What are
allies?. We asked some of the pupils afew questions
about what their favourite part was. Daniel Bythewaysaid My favorite part was seeing the artillery,
Parkash Singh said, I liked collecting information in
the workshop, and Cleo Buck said, I liked the medal
room,. Bradon Morrhouse-Bones said, I liked
dressing up in the workshop, This was a great
educational trip for the children.
Murderous Maths
During this half term they enjoyed code cracking. This was a chance for the childern to use
their knowledge to crack impossible codes. (Therere not really impossible!) At the top of
their page they wrote the symbols. Some of the symbols had dots and some did not. And
they had to work out what the symbolic code really meant just like spies in the war.
Lumanating Literacy
In literacy we have done all sorts of writing like description, dialogue and much more. Along
the way year 6 did a bit of role play. We had to react to the sound of the air raid siren. Then
we acted as a family. The family had a mum, a dad, a sister or a brother and some babies.
Then we used our acting to help us write a recount of what it may have been like to live
through the Blitz.
This is Germany Calling!
Orange class had the chance with Mr Coan to create a war time radio interview, by writing a
radio script and recording it using microphones and software on the computer. Some even
added sound effects to make it sound as if it had been recorded in WW2. People based their
interviews on evacuees, air raid wardens, Polish Freedom fighters and even Adolf Hitler!
They really enjoyed bringing their literacy writing to life!

Spectacular Sports
This half term there has been some amazing and unusual sports taking place in Balby
Central Primary School. Archery, basketball and football have all taken place. So lets start
off with Archery.
Amazing Archery
Recently Year 6 did Archery Cameron Beards
Granddad came into year 6 as he was willing to teach
them the basics of archery. Year 6 had to firmly hold the
bow, pull the string back half way, then let go and hope
for the best. Owen nearly hit a bulls-eye! Nobody really
even got close to that (well some people). It looks easy
but its not! Anyway moving on
Play Times
At Playtimes the upper key stage two has a football rota. If you are playing football you have
to stay on the new tarmac (just recently laid) but if you are naughty, damage the equipment
etc. quoits, hoola hoops, bouncy balls, you will be banned till next half term and will probablyget a strike so you have been warned! There are three sections to play on. The hoola
hoop section, quoits section and a football section. The hoola hoop section is the biggest
part (not including the field). The quoits section is about half the of the hoola hoop section!
Its Dinner TimeYears 3, 4, 5, 6 all have basketball, quoits, bouncy balls and hula
hoops. About 50% of the students play with hula hoops and the other
50% mostly play with balls and skipping ropes.
So overall, Balby Central is a very active school!

Lets Get SingingIt is a tradition for Balby Central Primary School to do a Christmas carol concert. This year there were
Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 who were performing at St Johns Church on Greenfield lane.
Year 6
Year 6 decided to sing Oh Come All Ye Faithful for their very last year of doing this. It took a lot of
practise but thankfully they remembered their words on the big day.
Year 5
Year 5 sang Holy Night and it sounded amazing. They squeezed in as much practice as they could and
it turned out really good and we are sure you would agree. They were that loud, even year 6 couldhear them in Mrs Moodys class room. Mrs Moody quoted Theirs is amazing!
Year 4
Year 4 sang Away In A Manger and tried very hard. Mr Houghton (the year 4 Indigo class teacher)
couldnt get the tune right so he asked Mrs Stevenson (the singing teacher) for help. It sounded
amazing in the church.
Year 3Year 3 sang Love Shine Down, not that you couldnt tell what song they beautifully sang. Mrs
Bedfords class joined Miss Stevenson class to practice. The first time it didnt go so well but they
finally picked it up, and it sounded amazing on the day.
All Together
The whole of key stage 2 sang Joy To The World and Hark The Herald Angel Sing. Every Monday they
practiced in the hall to get pitch perfect. On the big day they were able to get up to the stage and
sing their little hearts out.
Reading
In the carol service a Christmas story was read out between the songs. Year 6 were happy to
help so some of them signed up to read. It was really hard to stand up there and read in front
of everyone. Balby Central Primary put on a great show once again and we hope we
shared the Christmas spirit.

Every year there is a special day. That day is
Children In Need.
On Friday 15th
November, it was Children In
Need. Our school raised lots of money for
children needing that little bit extra help. We
do this so that they can live an amazing life.
We thought it would be nice, to give you a
peak where these donations are going to.
It funds projects working with children and
young people aged 18 years and under, living in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, who
are experiencing disadvantage through: Illness, distress, abuse or neglect, any kind of disability,
behavioural or psychological difficulties or those
living in poverty.
All of these things we take for granted like a roof
over our heads some people dont even have that.We have a lucky, luxuries life that needs to be
shared with the less fortunate.
Our school raised buckets full of money; in fact we
raced 253.54. KA CHING! For the day we dressed in
spots, dots and stripes. Lots of people dressed up in
all sorts of clothes but the most popular were
onesies!
