I-4 GENERAL INFORMATION

Shop Drawings for long lead items must be submitted within 3 weeks of Notice-to-Proceed. No additional compensation will be paid for delay in obtaining these items. The Contractor’s invoices will not be paid until the Schedule of Submittals has been approved by the Commissioner.

To accommodate special events, the Contractor shall:

On the day before events: Complete clean the entire project area and move temporary drums, barriers, or barricades to optimize pedestrian access and safety. Trenches must be backfilled, covered with steel plates, or patched with temporary asphalt as directed by the Commissioner. Contractor equipment must be consolidated to a location specified by the Commissioner and protected with temporary fence.

On the day of the event: Perform no Work except to be present to repair and maintain pedestrian safety and traffic control elements.

Agency Permits The contractor must secure permits from IDOT before commencement of work on or adjacent to Jackson Boulevard, Adams Street, Washington Street west of Wacker Drive, and/or Randolph Street west of Canal Street. Samples of the following forms are provided in this book.

As part of the contract, the Contractor must comply with the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) included with these specifications and secure a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit No. ILR10 issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) including all permit fees and coordination effort necessary.

spaced horizontally 24” o.c.. Cut and shape curbing where necessary to accommodate ramps and other items of Work. Dress arrises, edges, corners and welds on exposed surfaces to make flush, straight, smooth and free of surface blemishes for neat appearance. Hot-dip galvanize all components in accordance with ASTM A 123 requirements. Comply with ASTM A 384 and ASTM A 385 to prevent warpage and to provide high quality zinc coating on assemblies. Mark units on back for proper assembly and installation.

Verification of Conditions: Examine the areas to receive the Work and the conditions under which the Work would be performed. Contractor must remedy conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the Work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

Installation: Install steel plate curb accurately in location, alignment and elevation, plumb, level, true and free of rack, measured from established lines and levels. Fit adjoining sections together to form tight joints. .

Touch-Up Painting: Touch-up damaged and abraded areas of galvanized surfaces with specified zinc-rich primer paint. Thoroughly clean the surfaces and apply primer in accordance with paint manufacturer’s recommendations.

Method of Measurement: Steel Plate Edging will be measured in place in linear feet.

Basis of Payment: This Work will be paid for at the Contract Unit Price per linear feet for STEEL PLATE EDGING, which price includes all costs for completing the Work as specified.

ITEM 233 HIGH PERFORMANCE PAINT

Description. Work under this item shall be performed according to Section 506 and 1008 of the IDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, except as herein modified.

This Work shall consist of cleaning and preparation of new steel and aluminum surfaces as indicated on plans; bus shelter structure and any miscellaneous metal items on platform, including but not limited to all metal used for bench support, metal plates around columns, advertizing panels, etc., furnishing, application, and protection of the paint coatings.

ITEM 234 MISCELLANEOUS METAL – METAL PLATE ASSEMBLY Description. Work under this item shall be performed according to Section 505 of the IDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, except as herein modified. This Work shall consist of furnishing and installing items made primarily from plate, shapes, and other forms of metal, but which may include sheet metal components. Metal Plate: Stainless Steel plate at bus shelter bench and at column bases, digital/static ad and messaging panel housing and elsewhere as shown on plans.

Metal Shapes: Stainless Steel angles, channels used in the plate assembly, digital/static ad and messaging panel housing nd elsewhere, as shown on plans.

Anchors, fasteners, accessories and hardware used for connection to concrete base.

Materials.

(a) Stainless Steel Shapes:

(1) Shapes and Bars ASTM A276, Type 316 (2) Plate, Sheet and Strip ASTM A240, Type 316 (3) For Welding: AISI, Type 316L

(b) Hardware Components: T316 stainless steel. (c) Gaskets: As required to seal joints in formed metal and remain weathertight: as

recommended in writing by metal manufacturer (d) Sealant: Exterior: ASTM C 920; elastomeric; As recommended in writing by the metal

manufacturer. Sealants shall have a VOC content of not more than 250 g/L when calculated according to 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24).

(e) Backing Paint: Protective Backing Paint: FS TT-C-494, Bituminous. (f) Grout: Non-shrink, non-ferrous minimum yield strength of 7,000 psi at 28 days. (g) Fasteners: Fabricated from same basic metal and alloy as fastened metal unless

otherwise indicated. Do not use metals that are incompatible with materials joined. (h) Anchors: Type best suited to application.

Finish.

All exposed stainless steel shall have matt, non-directional surface, EN 10088-2 2K, maximum surface roughness of .5 Microns Ra. Pickled and passivated process shall be used to remove all discoloration after fabrication for the entire pedestrian rail system, including but not limited to posts, attachments and anchor plate, per ASTM A380 and ASTM A967.

General Requirements. Work shall be in accordance to the details shown on the plans. Install components plumb and level, accurately fitted, free from distortion or defects.

Design metal items and connections under direct supervision of Professional Structural Engineer experienced in design of this Work and licensed in State of Illinois. Connections not fully detailed on the Drawings to resist the loads shown on the Contract Drawings or specified,

Build in straps, plates, and brackets as needed to support and anchor fabricated items to adjoining construction. Reinforce metal items as needed to attach and support other construction

ITEM 235 MISCELLANEOUS METAL – CANOPY DRAINAGE AND CONDUIT RUN

Description. Work under this item shall be performed according to Section 505 and 506 of the IDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction except as herein modified.

This Work shall consist of furnishing and installing bus shelter canopy drainage system: metal flashings, gutters and downspouts, and conduit raceways.

Materials.

(a) Gutter: minimum 12 gauge extruded aluminum custom downspouts

(b) Downspout and conduit raceway: minimum 14 gauge extruded aluminum custom downspouts

(c) Flashing: minimum 16 gauge extruded aluminum custom downspouts Aluminum Shapes:

(1) Aluminum Sheet and Plate ASTM B209, Alloy 6061-T6 (2) Extruded Shapes ASTM B429, Alloy 6063-T6

(d) Solder: Class A, Grade I, half-and-half, pig lead and block tin, ASTM B32, Type 50-50, with rosin flux.

(e) Mastic: FS SS-S-153, Type 1, black plastic cement.

(f) Nails and Screws: Same metal as flashing/sheet metal, Stronghold type, with large flat heads and sharp points. Use lead or neoprene washers where indicated. Use sheet metal screws or self-tapping screws to fasten sheet metal to other metal. Match finish of exposed heads with finish of material being fastened.

(g) Lap Joint Sealer: Polyisobutylene non-hardening, non-skinning, non-drying, non-migrating sealant.

(h) Coating for Dissimilar Metals: bituminous paint.

(i) Epoxy Seam Sealer: Two-part non-corrosive metal seam cementing compound recommended by metal manufacturer for exterior/interior non-moving joints including riveted joints.

(j) Adhesives: Type recommended by flashing sheet manufacturer for waterproof/weatherproof seaming and adhesive application of flashing sheet.

(k) Metal Accessories: Sheet metal clips, straps, anchoring devices, and similar accessory units as required for installation of work, matching or compatible with material being installed, non-corrosive, size and gage as required for performance.

(l) Gutter and Conductor-Head Guards: Use materials compatible with gutters and downspouts. Connections butt welded and ground smooth.

Finish: All aluminum items: painted, per Special Provision: High Performance Paint. Paint aluminum in contact with concrete with protective bituminous backing paint to avoid dissimilar metal reaction.

ITEM 238 BUS SHELTER BENCH SEAT

Description. This Work shall consist of furnishing, application, and installation of benches, as shown on plans and specified herein.

Materials.

Seat: Wood - Exterior use: lpe; FSC certified.

Mounting and connection hardware: Stainless Steel Grade 316

End caps, and seat dividers: Stainless Steel Grade 316

Finish.

Finish on wood – Unfinished

Finish on metal: All exposed stainless steel shall have matt, non-directional surface, EN 10088-2 2K, maximum surface roughness of 0.5 Microns Ra.

General Requirements. Coordination: Coordinate with concrete platform,bench and curb manufacturer, shelter manufacturer, railing manufacturer, electrical and traffic surveillance requirements and any other trades.

Submittals: (a) Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product data, storage and handling requirements and

recommendations, installation methods and available colors, styles, patterns and textures. (b) Shop Drawings: Submit manufacturer’s shop drawings, including plans and elevations,

indicating overall dimensions and details. (c) Samples: Submit samples of materials, finishes, and colors. (d) Submit min 24” long sample of the bench seat, including attachment to the concrete base

and seat dividers and adjacent metal plate. (e) Manufacturer’s Qualifications: Manufacturer regularly engaged in manufacture of site

furnishings since for min of 5 years

Construction Requirements. Bench seat shall be shop assembled in largest pieces possible. QC/QA Requirements. The Contractor shall provide material acceptance for all material that are not referred to in SSRBC. The Contractor shall provide a Manufacturer’s written certification that the material complies with these specifications for materials included in SSRBC. Warranty Products will be free from defects in material and/or workmanship for a period of three years.

ITEM 244 BOLLARD BARRICADE SYSTEM

Description. This Work shall consist of furnishing all materials and equipment and all work necessary to construct the crash tested-crash certified – high security bollard barricade system, as indicated in the contract documents and specified herein. Material: Bollard: Steel Architectural Enhancement Outer Shells: Stainless Steel 316 Foundation:

Deep Foundation: Concrete Shallow Foundation: Steel members w/ steel reinforcing mesh welded in place.

Finish. Steel Structure. The foundation and underside of the Bollard shall be asphalt emulsion coated for corrosion protection. The roadway plates shall have a non-skid surface. The above grade portion of the Bollard shall be finished with an industrial enamel primer. Architectural Enhancement Outer Shells: Stainless Steel 316: matt, non-directional surface, EN 10088-2 2K, maximum surface roughness of 0.5Microns Ra., Wire mesh shall have surface finished as supplied by approved manufacturer. Pickled and passivated process shall be used to remove all discoloration after fabrication. Design: Based on DELTA SCIENTIFIC CORPORATION; Model Omni DSC800 General Requirements. System Configuration for crash rated Bollard Barricade System: (a) Bollard Height. Height of the Bollard shall be 30 inches (762 mm) as measured from the top of the foundation frame to the top of the Bollard assembly.

(b) Bollard Diameter, with Architectural Enhancement in place shall not be greater than 10” inches (260 mm) in diameter.

(c) Foundation is set into existing roadways or sidewalks.

(d) Spacing. Clear opening between Bollards shall be 43 inches (1.09 m) maximum.

(e) Stopping Capacity for BOLLARD BARRICADE SYSTEM:

The Bollard system shall be designed to stop a vehicle attacking from either direction.

(a) High Energy Attack. Bollard(s) shall have been shown by certified dynamic non linear analysis to be capable of stopping and immobilizing non-armored or non-tracked vehicles with weight and velocity characteristics as defined in next paragraph. The Bollard system shall be designed to destroy the front suspension system, steering linkage, engine crankcase and portions of the drive train.

(b) The Bollard shall be capable of stopping and destroying a vehicle(s) complying to DOS/DOD K4,L2 certification: 15,000 pounds at 30 mph (66,7 kN at 100 kph)

ITEM 248 DIGITAL/STATIC AD AND MESSAGING PANEL HOUSING Description. Work under this item shall be performed according to applicable portions of Section 505 of the IDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. This Work shall consist of furnishing and installing housing for the digital and static ad and messaging panels incorporating elements such as: JC Decaux static advertising poster, BUS TRACKER DIGITAL SIGNAGE, AUDIO ADA ANNUNCIATOR SYSTEM, LED UPLIGHT, electrical outlets, all electrical and Ethernet connections included under BUS SHELTER ELECTRICAL WORK required for the components to be housed.

Materials.

Metal Plate and Shapes: 316L stainless steel. (a) Comply with Special Provision: Bus Canopy Structural Steel. (b) Finish. As specified in Special Provisions -Item - MISCELLANEOUS METAL - METAL

PLATE ASSEMBLY

Hardware Components: T316 stainless steel. All exposed screws and hardware shall be tamper proof. Piano hinges: 316L stainless steel.

Sealant: As recommended by the manufacturer

Backing Paint: Protective Backing Paint: FS TT-C-494, Bituminous.

Grout: Non-shrink, non-ferrous minimum yield strength of 7,000 psi at 28 days.

Anchors: Type best suited to application.

Gasket: Neoprene

Louver: 316L stainless steel; 16 degree deflection, ¼” spacing between bars; weld-lock construction; mitered corners. Bases of design: AG40 Bar Grille by Architectural Grille. Approved Equal.

Pneumatic Strut: Hydraulically dampened gas spring for opening of lids; 2 per panel; Capacity: 500 LB.

Glazing: 3/8” Clear tempered and heat soaked monolithic. All edges will be ground flat with a frosted appearance. Comply with QC requirements listed for item: Poster Frame of Special Provision.

Finish. As specified in Special Provisions -Item - MISCELLANEOUS METAL - METAL PLATE ASSEMBLY

ITEM 249 BUS TRACKER DIGITAL SIGNAGE

Description. This item consists of furnishing and installing a combined digital display/ integrated PC into DIGITAL/STATIC AD AND MESSAGING PANEL HOUSINGs as detailed in the plans and all programming, system integration, and coordination work necessary for the digital display to show real-time Bus Tracker information from the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) network.

Materials. Minimum Requirements: Digital Display:
