THE “DETROIT 100” STORYThe City of Detroit is making its comeback, and we’re seeing new and exciting investments being made downtown every week. However, we know that Detroit’s neighborhoods can’t be left out of the city’s resurgence, not if we want a sustainable and equitable future.

Cross-sector collaboration is crucial to a sustainable future. The entire re-gion needs to work together. Life Remodeled’s “Detroit 100” is an initiative, started in 2017, to rally 100 local businesses to support our neighborhood projects and help demonstrate the business community’s commitment to our local community.

DURFEE INNOVATION SOCIETY The school district invited Life Remodeled to lease the Durfee building (built in 1927, containing 143,000 square-feet) for just $1 per year, and we have repurposed this historic school building into a community innovation center focused on entrepreneurship, employment, education and community.

Repurposing the former Durfee building, Life Remodeled has created a space for the best and brightest nonprofit organizations and for-profit businesses to co-locate, share resources and achieve greater collective impact. In order to be a tenant inside the Durfee Innovation Society, organizations must enrich the human spirit of Detroiters by achieving at least one of the following:

- Implementing real-world educational experiences for youth and children- Creating significant workforce development or employment opportunities

for youth and adults- Supporting entrepreneurism- Providing a nonprofit service

ENVISIONING THE FUTURE...

The Durfee Innovation Society exists to create substantial and impactful opportunities for Detroit children, families and single adults, while advancing collaboration among the eight major sectors (arts, business, education, faith based, government, human services, media and philanthropy) in both the city and it’s surrounding suburbs. Life Remodeled will measure community use, increased access to opportunities for youth and children, and the number of jobs we are able to help create.

ABOUT LIFE REMODELEDLife Remodeled is a Detroit-based nonprofit that invests approximately $5M worth of cash, labor and materials into a Detroit neighborhood each year. Projects are determined by the community’s needs and vision. The Life Remodeled partners assist in three areas: Remodeling a school or other community asset; repairing owner-occupied homes, and mobilizing 10,000 volunteers to clean up 300 city blocks in six days.

HISTORYIn 2014, Life Remodeled redirected its focus to Detroit neighborhoods with emphasis on a Detroit Public School. At Cody High School, Life Remod-eled and its partners created a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lab, a medical simulation lab, revamped the home econom-ics room, and built a new $1.2 million synthetic turf football field, allowing students to host a football game at home that school year for the first time in seven seasons.

In 2015, Life Remodeled moved east to Osborn, one of Detroit’s most-blighted neighborhoods. Efforts focused on a new roof, gym, cafeteria, library, and main office, among other upgrades to Osborn High School. Prior to the new roof installation, students and faculty regularly had to deal with water leakage every time it rained.

In 2016, L ife Remodeled constructed a new $1.4 million park designed by Denby High School students, adjacent to Denby High School. It included a performance pavilion, new basketball courts, volleyball court, garden, putting green, pickleball court, several covered seating areas, and other amenities.

In 2017, Life Remodeled made our first multi-year commitment to the neigh-borhood surrounding Central High School and began renovations at the former Durfee school building. In August, we coordinated with more than 300 partner organizations and businesses to rally over 11,000 volunteers to clean up 367 city blocks and board up 534 vacant houses in just six days.

2018 PROJECTAs 2018 marks the 51st year anniversary of the 1967 Detroit uprising, Life Remodeled and our partners are continuing to invest in the neighborhood surrounding the Durfee Innovation Society, in the community where Detroit’s civil unrest began. Our collective impact serves not only as a powerful com-memoration of the progress that has been made, but also the progress we continue to strive toward.

PROJECT SCOPEThis year, we will mobilize another 10,000 volunteers on the same blocks, but go beyond blight removal. In response to the vision and requests of students and community residents, we will plant at least 1,000 trees and perennials, build community gardens, install little free libraries, designate the safest routes to schools with artwork, upgrade several parks, install new bus shelters and add neighborhood signage. Our 2018 Six-Day Project will take place October 1–6.
