A Central Ohio golf stalwart for more than 50 years, Licking Springs Golf Club has welcomed,

entertained and challenged more golf-ers than just about any other course in the Buckeye State. Yet even with such a long and proven track record, to truly appreciate this golf course, especially if you haven’t played it recently or ever, is to experience it fi rsthand.

Located just a few minutes north of Newark, Licking Springs is an 18-hole championship course that features a natural spring on the property, a variety of natural wildlife and a challenging layout with rolling fairways and undulating greens.

“Licking Springs is a place you have to play to truly appreciate it,” said Licking Springs General Manager Bill Stebelton. “It’s a fair course but not one that golfers are just going to come and rip up.”

At just shy of 6,300 yards from the back tees, Licking Springs doesn’t require signifi cant length, but it does demand accuracy and strong short game to score well. The par-71 offers relatively narrow fairways, a handful of forced carries on several holes, especially on the front-nine and green complexes that will challenge even the best golfer’s touch and speed control.

“The greens really provide defense for the golf course,” Stebelton said. “There is a lot of movement in them and if golfers miss the greens there are plenty of side-hill lies that make getting up and down diffi cult.”

The challenge of Licking Springs is located throughout the course but there are a handful of holes that truly provide the appropriate perspective to the under-rated challenge of the course. In fact, the Jack Kidwell-designed course presents

itself strong right out of the gate. The fi rst hole, a 437-yard, par-5 requires pinpoint accuracy off the tee and features a tight dogleg right some 200 yards down the fairway. Make par or better on the second most diffi cult hole at Licking Springs and your round is off to a strong start.

A similar test waits at the 380-yard par-4 fi fth hole. Another tight, dogleg-right challenge off the tee, the fi fth features a diffi cult approach shot as well with a green that is guarded in the front by a large natural spring. Decision making and execution on the approach shot is critical on this gem.

The close to the front nine is high-lighted by the downhill, 525-yard par-5 8th the longest hole on the course. Long hitters will look to challenge the green in two while shorter strikers will opt for a short approach to set up birdie.

Speaking of strong clos-ings, that is exactly what Licking Springs offers golfer with consecutive par-4s in the 17th and 18th holes. The signature hole at Licking Springs, the 405-yard 17th hole is equal parts challenging and stunning. The approach is everything on this hole as golfers must navigate a large water hazard in front of the medium-sized green.

The second longest hole at Licking Springs, the 18th is also rated as the most diffi cult. Like the 17th, the second shot on 18 is the key to success as a small creek dissects the fairway some 100 yards from the green, which is guarded front and left by water.

Unique to Licking Springs is a bonus, par 3 “19th hole” that golfers can use as either a warm-up hole or perhaps to settle a wager at the conclusion of their round.

Not only a favorite among daily players, Licking Springs offers several membership programs that are affordable both for individuals and families. The programs include full and weekday only packages. In addition, Licking Springs boasts two putting and chipping greens and a separate practice area to fi ne tune your game. zan, the same architect responsible for Wisconsin’s Erin Hills and Ohio’s Cooks Creek and The Golf Club of Dublin, Little Bear sits on 22 acres that used to be a fl at soybean fi eld, but now has roll-ing features, three large lakes, more than 1,000 trees, a beautiful waterfall and 22 sand traps.

The greens at Little Bear are made of synthetic grass, but golfers will see actual tiny blades on the putting surfaces that always roll smooth and quick; they’re about 12 on the Stimpmeter.

Among the pantheon of golf courses emblazoned with the name of legendary architect Pete Dye, The

Fort is not the fl ashiest. It’s not the most recognizable. It’s not the newest. It is the most historically signifi cant, and a damn fi ne golf experience at that.

Dye, along with associate Tim Liddy, re-tooled The Fort in 1998 to create the wonderfully wooded layout you’ll fi nd tucked away in the shadows of downtown Indy. Designer and canvas just so happen to share a similar background.

While Mr. Dye never saw combat time during his time enlisted in the Unit-ed States Army, he was stationed at both Fort Benning (Georgia) and Fort Bragg (North Carolina). At Fort Bragg he served dutifully as greenskeeper of the base golf course, and during trips to nearby

Pinehurst, developed a relationship with Donald Ross. His love for “digging in the dirt” was born and the rest is history.

Established seven years after Fort Benjamin Harrison was offi cially decom-missioned, Dye stepped in to craft a course in the middle of a 1,700-acre state park. Opened in 1906, Fort Ben was an active military base from World War I until Operation: Desert Storm. The base housed prisoners of war during the World War II.

One of Naples’ Signature Golf Courses has a New Name

Panther Run Golf Club, formerly known as The Golf Club at Del Webb is an 18-hole championship golf course designed by noted architect Gordon Lewis located within the Del Webb Naples community.

Opened in 2007 and managed by Troon Golf, the golf club boasts an expansive practice facility with fi ve practice greens, a short game area, which includes two practice sand bunkers and an aqua driving range with natural turf target greens. PGA professionals are on-site for individual lessons and group clinics. A pro shop also features all the latest equipment, acces-sories and apparel.

The golf club was recently named as a 2010 Top 50 golf course for women by Golf Digest magazine and was nominated as a Top 10 New Public Course in 2007 by Golf Magazine.

Panther Run Golf Club is within Del Webb Naples, an active community for those aged 55 and older. The community will have 2,000 homes at build out, with a 35,000-square-foot amenity center which is expected to open in 2012.

There are destinations that offer great golf. There are others that provide memorable beaches and water

activities. There are those people enjoy for the entertainment, nightlife and shopping opportunities. Then there is Hilton Head Island, where every aspect of a memo-rable vacation experience comes together so nicely that many who come choose to make it their new or second home.

Best known as the host of the PGA Tour’s Heritage at its famed Harbour Town Golf Links, the Hilton Head region, which extends into Bluffton on the mainland, is home to more than 20 resort and public courses, many of which have received national awards and recognition. Like-wise, the area has emerged as a popular retirement or second-home destination with numerous private communities housing courses built by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye and Tom Fazio.

For those just getting to know the island, there’s the Sea Pines Resort, which

is home to Harbour Town along with two other resort courses – The Ocean Course and Heron Point by Pete Dye. On the island, Long Cove Club and its Dye-de-signed course is nationally-ranked private facility. Off island, Belfair is a renowned community featuring 36 holes of Tom Fazio-designed championship golf.
