CPFJ 2014 FALL CONCERT SERIES

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT:

CPFJ thanks WITF for their help with our last Spring Series Concert on May 25th -the lobby of their Public Media Center was an ideal spot for the intimate concertperformed by Ehud Aherie and Ken Peplowski - we will certainly have more eventsthere in the near future.

Our next major event is the 34th Annual Central PA Jazz Festival which will include aJazz Party at 1500 N. 6th. St., Picnic at Indian Echo Caverns, Riverboat Cruise, JazzJam Session at the Timbers in Mt. Gretna, and a concert at Mt. Gretna Playhouse onAugust 10th with Philadelphia bassist Lee Smith’s Sextet and Hendrik MeurkensSamba Jazz Quartet. We thank Music at Gretna for offering to co-host a concert inthis wonderful facility. Please check out the complete Festival lineup on pages 4 & 5.We are excited about the artists and events that are scheduled. The new Jazz Partywill feature live music in three venues in one building - the new Condominium at 1500N. 6th St. We will have Jazz Under the Stars on the roof of the building with DianeWilson - this is the only ticketed event and there is limited attendance (150 people) soorder your tickets early. The Timbers Restaurant in Mt. Gretna will be the site forour Jam Session on Sunday, Aug 10 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Please call them forreservations as this venue also has limited seating - we suggest that you have dinnerand drinks at the Timbers and then head over to the Gretna Playhouse for the doublebill of Lee Smith’s Group and Hendrik Meurkens Samba jazz Quartet - it should be agreat day - see the whole Festival story on page 5.

The CPFJ Board has voted to move the 2015 Festival to April or May, enabling us toincorporate more educational components with performances by area high schoolsand youth groups - keep in touch for more news on this new venture.

If you would like to volunteer some time assisting at future CPFJ events, pleasecontact our volunteer coordinator, Leslie Beamer, at [email protected] or (717)790-9672. We will need volunteers for our four day long Cent. PA Jazz Festival - Aug.7-10, promotional tent at the three day Dauphin Co. Music and Wine Festival, Sept.5-7, as well as our Fall Concert Series. We also encourage local businesses andindividuals to donate funds to underwrite CPFJ events, please contact the office atyour convenience if you are interested.

Please check out the “Steady Gig” & “One Time Only” pages in this issue - it is themost complete list of Central PA jazz events available. We hope you will get out oftento support the establishments that are hosting live jazz and give a listen to our talentedarea jazz musicians - there is a lot of great music happening right down the street andit will only continue to be there if there is a steady audience.

I end this letter on a sad note - Ray Bogardus passed away on June 1st at the age of79. He was one of the first people that I met in 1978 when I arrived in Harrisburg andremained a good friend to this day. Despite his blindness, he was always ready tohelp, serving on the Board of Directors and as President of CPFJ for many years. There was never a complaint about his lack of sight, only positive ideas and talk ofgreat music and musicians. We offer condolences to his wife, Josie, and his familyand friends...he will be missed.

Thanks to all for your continuing support of CPFJ!

MAY 25TH SPRING CONCERT Ehud Asherie & Ken Peplowski - Starting the Summer Right

There are lots of ways to categorize jazz. Some think in eras: traditional, bebop, hard bop, fusion, etc. Others

think geographically, as in New Orleans jazz, Chicago style, West Coast, and whatnot. Still others think

stylistically, and talk about modal, swing, free, and more. While I have organized my thinking along all these

conventions at one time or another, the schema that I mostly use is one dominated by time and season. Yes, I

delight in picking out the perfect jazz for the exact time that I am listening. There's Dexter Gordon for after

midnight, and Spyro Gyra for summer mornings; even Coltrane has a time (try listening to A Love Supreme as

the sun rises for a spiritual experience). So, as I sat listening to Ken Peplowski and Ehud Asherie on a beautiful

Memorial Day weekend, with the afternoon sun streaming into the grand hall of the WITF studios, I couldn't help

noticing that the jazz was perfectly matched to the time and season.

I think this “time feeling” crossed many categorical boundaries. Peplowski and Asherie are both from New York.

They played an exciting mix of show tunes (Thou Swell), standards (The Jeep is Jumpin'), and originals.

Stylistically, their center of gravity was focused on traditional jazz, but also swirled around and through bebop,

stride, ragtime, and included modern touches as well. As for influences, I heard much of the history and its

people in their playing. For example, there was James P Johnson, Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, and Billy Taylor, all

rolled up and filtered through Tin Pan Alley in Ehud's playing. For his part, Ken played with a super smooth tone

and lots of imagination on clarinet. And when he picked up the tenor sax, I heard a cross between Ben Webster

and Lester Young – how could someone meld together two more disparate players so seamlessly? Yes, class was

in session, as these two guys took us through a tour of jazz history. However, despite all the eras, styles, and

geography, the one thread that held the whole concert together was that it was the perfect jazz for a sunny

summer afternoon.

In some ways, it's easier to play in a group. With four or more players, one can turn their ears off and blend into

the ensemble. It's potentially easier as a soloist, too. When playing solo, one has to be creative and on target, but

they don't have to worry about blending with others – they can just go off and do their own thing without

consequences. I think duets present the greatest challenge to a jazz musician, because there is no hiding (as in an

ensemble), and there is the real need to listen intently and both solo and support, all of the time. In addition,

since there is no rhythm section, both instrumentalists need to pay attention to both melody and rhythm. This is

no easy feat, but is exactly what we witnessed from Asherie and Peplowski, made all the more amazing by the

ease and relaxation with which they burned through tunes by Ellinton, King Oliver, Al Jolson, Rogers and Hart,

Fats Waller, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Hodges, and others.

Of course, the audience of CPFJ regulars demanded an encore, which Ehud and Ken were happy to provide. And

their afternoony, lazy, pretty version of 'They Can't Take That Away From Me' provided the perfect capstone.

What a great way to start the summer!

CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP - JUNE 18-20, 2014Our Camp got off to a great start with a concert by the stellar faculty in

the Recital Hall at the High Center - pictured to the left are Steve

Meashey, Wycliffe Gordon, Tim Warfield & Jonathan Ragonese ( not

pictured were Kirk Reese and Jeff Stabley).

During the concert we awarded the Ogden Thompson Memorial

Scholarship to Jeanne Marie Stalteri from Indiana, PA who will be

attending Slippery Rock Univ. this fall. Presenting the award were Kara

Thompson and her son Sherman, who is attends the camp.

The facilities at Messiah College are ideal for this event with great

pianos in abundance, a keyboard lab, plenty of rehearsal space and

their beautiful performance hall - Parmer Hall - where the closing

concert is held. We hope you were able to attend this exciting event to

see and hear the boundless energy and enthusiasm that these kids bring

to the music.

We are grateful again to the Olewine Family Fund for underwriting the

Camp and we encourage those of you who are able to donate to our

tuition fund - we annually have many talented young musicians who are

unable to afford to attend. This year we had scholarships donated by

Penn National Insurance, The Hall Foundation, David and Mary Heltzel,

Janice R. Black, Capitol Blue Cross, David Skerpon, and Rosemary

Barrett. Education is the force that keeps America's Music alive - thanks

for your support!

Pictured in master classes with the students are drummer Jeff Stabley,

piano class with Kirk Reese, trombone master Wycliffe Gordon,

jazz history with Jonathan Ragonese, and sax master Tim Warfield.

We had an exceptional group of students this year who

were all very attentive and eager to learn. Many new friends

were made...our thanks to the faculty and staff at Messiah

for their time and cooperation in hosting this great event.

Track of the Month.

Remember back when records came with liner notes that gave information about what you werehearing on the album? In this monthly column, the ViBE collides the new with the old by suggesting a tuneto download from iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite music service, and providing “liner notes” from one of theCPFJ musicians or jazz enthusiasts. Enjoy!.

Mark Whitfield – “Girl Talk” from the album True Blue.

OK, let’s connect the dots on this one. I was at the recent CPFJ concert listening to a wonderfully “summery” version of “They Can’tTake That Away From Me” played by Ken Peplowski and Ehud Asherie, and thinking it was time to crack out some “summery-feeling” jazz. That brought me to this song, and, in particular, this version. Mark Whitfield, after graduating from Berklee (where heattended on a full scholarship), got his first break playing with Jack McDuff, and this was the tune on which he was often featured. The song itself was written by Neal Hefti, the great songwriter and arranger who worked with Woody Herman and Count Basie, andscored the film and TV series The Odd Couple. Speaking of television, the lyrics were written by the great Bobby Troup, who alsowrote “Route 66,” was married to singer Julie London, and played the role of Dr. Joe Early on the 1970s TV show Emergency!Which brings us back full circle to our Sunday afternoon CPFJ concert in Harrisburg, the city where Bobby Troup was born. Bringon the summer, baby!

FAREWELL TO A GOODFRIEND OF JAZZ….

A longtime friend, supporter, former Board member and PastPresident of the Friends of Jazzpassed away June 1st. RAYBOGARDUS, SR. died at HolySpirit Hospital on June 1 at theage of 79. Ray was a willing

activist for the music and cared deeply about themusicians and fans.

These heartfelt words came to us from Rob Rutz:"I read this morning that Ray Bogardus passedaway. He was an instrumental leader with theCentral Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz, that fordecades has been an entity that produces world-class jazz events in Harrisburg, PA. Thanks to Rayand stellar musicians including Steve Rudolph,Reuel Ryman and Jack Snavely, I was exposed toartists one could only dream to meet. Ray wasblind, but it didn't stop him from being GannonUniversity's first graduate with this challenge. Iworked with his wife Josie for many years and hadthe occasion to hang out with Ray in manysettings. I never heard him mention that it wasdifficult for him to go about life without sight. Rayand Josie were enormous jazz advocates andvolunteered countless hours in support of the artand history of the genre. Sincere condolences toJosie and the extended family, including 16grandchildren and four great grandchildren. This isa better world, thanks to Ray and his lifetime ofcontributions in support of family and others.Ray, you opened my eyes to the art of jazz.Godspeed, old friend, and we'll continue to shareyour vision with those around us.”
