Announcement of VacancyThe Board of Education of the Walton Central School District announces a vacancy for the position of Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2020.

Mr. Perry Dewey, District Superintendent of the Sole Supervisory District of Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego Counties, will assist the Walton Central School District Board of Education in the selection process. The Board of Education will make the final decision as to the successful candidate. Applicants are not to contact members of the Board of Education. The deadline for the receipt of applications is March 27, 2020. The Board anticipates completing first round interviews April 20-21, final interviews April 29-30, and appointing the successful candidate in May. The new Superintendent is expected to begin employment on July 1, 2020, or a mutually acceptable date.

Terms of Employment & SalaryThe Board of Education is prepared to offer the successful candidate a three-year contract with a comprehensive benefits package and a salary range of $135,000–$165,000.

Our FacilitiesThere is a student population of 908 in grades UPK-12. During the last 20 years, the District has invested more than 25 million dollars in its facilities. The District has established a Capital Reserve Fund and is in the early stages of planning a future capital project.

Our Initiatives & Successes• Parental involvement is encouraged through volunteer

work, the PTA/PTSA, Shared Decision Making team, LINKS team and building level teams.

• Board of Education members, administration and faculty are accessible and responsive to public opinion.

• Administrative staff includes three Building Principals, one Dean of Students for the middle/high school, Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment, CSE Chairperson, and School Business Manager.

• Walton has an excellent record of voter support.• The 2019 cohort graduation rate for Walton students is

91% (2018-2019 District Report Card); approximately 61% of students continue on to college.

• The elementary school offers small class sizes in a literacy-based environment.

• The District values being a “learning community.”• There are 13 college-level courses offered.• There are 23 high school elective courses offered.• There is a strong emphasis on improving academic

programs through the district-wide LINKS plan.• Focused professional development in collaboration

with Clarkson University, BOCES and NYS RTI Action Network is provided for all teachers in the District.

• Students have access to a wide variety of CTE programs through our DCMO BOCES.

• Walton’s FFA Chapter is one of three in Delaware County and is highly regarded locally, statewide and nationally.

• There is a strong vocational emphasis; many students are recognized for their accomplishments.

• A Scholastic Achievement Dinner is held each fall to honor students who excelled academically or otherwise in their previous year’s classes.

• Excellent music instruction is provided. The District is one of two in the county to provide an orchestral program in grades K-12.

• The District has a dedicated staff who see opportunities for students through active grant writing and an Arts in Education initiative; students in 2019 sang on stage with the Hamilton cast on Broadway, blew glass at the Corning Museum, and experienced many more opportunities in art and science.

• Diagnostic applications track student reading skills and reviewed by teacher teams throughout the school year, allowing stakeholders to make informed decisions on whether to initiate academic intervention services on behalf of the students.

• Instructional buildings utilize Interactive Smart Panels and Chromebooks. The District is moving towards 1:1 Chromebook devices over the next three years in grades 6-12.

• A Cisco VOIP phone system utilizes Informacast as an emergency broadcast system. An Avigilon IP-based camera system of nearly 80 cameras provides 90% coverage of instructional buildings. Door access control provides full control of building entry.

CommunityWalton is situated on the banks of the West Branch of the Delaware River at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, approximately 150 miles from the New York metropolitan area. Binghamton is an easy one-hour drive, with Albany and Syracuse each two hours away. Five colleges are located within an hour’s drive: SUNY Delhi, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick College, Binghamton University, and SUNY Broome Community College.

The Village and Town of Walton have a combined population of 8,584. The Village is made up of 3,008 residents and the Town has 5,576 residents as of 2020. Major employers are light industrial facilities, agribusiness or local government agencies. Several small businesses keep our “Home Town Feeling” alive and vibrant. Local healthcare includes United Health Care/Delaware Valley Hospital boasting a state-of-the-art emergency room, primary healthcare center, pharmacy and physical therapy facility; Bassett Healthcare Network health center, individual health and dental practices, and a nationally owned pharmacy. 

Walton takes pride in its clean, family-oriented rural community, has a rich history of agriculture, and is home to the Delaware County Fair. The historic William B. Ogden Free Library is part of a larger library network, and offers an active community schedule including local clubs for adults, story-time for young children, book clubs, author talks, and special seasonal programming. Cultural activities include a summer concert series at the beautiful Bassett Park, and year-round concerts sponsored by Music on the Delaware at the recently renovated historic Walton Theatre. Theatre-goers also enjoy current movies, classic movies, seasonal festivities, and other artistic endeavors. With 13 churches located in the village and several others within a 10- to 15-minute drive, Walton serves a wide range of faiths.

There is a keen interest in outdoor recreating, including golf, tennis, camping, hunting, fly fishing, canoeing, kayaking and hiking. Bear Spring State Park provides opportunities for camping, picnicking, and offers a trail system for hiking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. We have a vibrant summer recreation program for children at the Austin Lincoln Park, including swim lessons, supervised basketball, volleyball, arts & crafts, and large little league program. An active Booster Club program sponsors year-round programs such as football, wrestling, basketball, field hockey and soccer. A strong 4-H presence in our community provides a multitude of opportunities for children to engage in enrichment activities.
