CENTRE FOR CLINICAL SKILLS & SIMULATIONS
VISION
“To create complete medical professional imparting essential clinical skills in
order to enhance safety during patient care.”
MISSION
“To Provide hands-on learning experiences to medical fraternity for
the practice of clinical skills, which are deemed essential for the
effective and safe management of patients”.
OBJECTIVES
Improve clinical skills with aid of simulators or simulated patients.
To impart student - centred and problem based learning.
To provide an opportunity to integrate different subjects and
disciplines, propagate concept of scientific basis of clinical
practice.
“GOOD JUDGEMENT COMES FROM EXPERIENCE & OFTEN EXPERIENCE COMES FROM BAD JUDGEMENT”
INTRODUCTION
Learning is a continuous process in the field of Life Sciences. A clinician has to
undergo training to upgrade their skills periodically to keep pace with the advances in
medicine and changes in protocols.
Availability of resources to practice in terms of patient and the issues related to
perfection of skills is answered by practicing on manikins under supervision of a skilled
certified trainer.
To make effective application of skills, practice is necessary to be perfect. Before
practicing on patients the clinician has to perfect his skills on manikins under the guidance
of a trainer, get certified and practice.
Simulation is now rapidly becoming an important and integral adjunct to medical
education and training. The need to professionalize medical education and training has
seen the advent of medical simulators and manikins as a preferred choice for training.
Simulation has made it possible for an Apprentice to acquire, practice and become
proficient on demand, besides meeting the critical requirements of various clinical
competencies.
It will be an Integration of Education, Practicality, Assessment and Safe Practice in all
medical & surgical subjects.
Regular CPCR programs were being conducted from October 2009 at RL Jalappa
Hospital till June 2014 by Department of Anaesthesiology. Around 1000 people have been
trained which included Interns, Post Graduates, Nursing Staff, Paramedics and general
public.
The novel idea of providing such skills under one roof was initiated by our Hon’ble Vice
-Chancellor, Prof P.F. Kotur. Under his guidance, the new state of art “Centre for Clinical
Skills & Simulations” (CCSS) was established and inaugurated by Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil,
Hon’ble Minister of Medical Education, Government of Karnataka on 2nd August 2014.
This laboratory was built in an area of 337 Sq. Meters which comprises of Dry / Wet
Labs, Conference Halls, Simulator and Endotrainers room.
The primary focus of this laboratory is to provide training to Undergraduates,
Postgraduates, Interns, Nursing Staff, Medical faculty and paramedical personals in various
diagnostic and procedural skills with the aid of simulators and manikins.
This laboratory caters to the needs of all the clinical departments. The monitoring
committee headed by Prof. A. Bhaskaran, Vice Principal consists of all the Heads of the
Departments and other enthusiastic and focused faculty members.

Brief report of the activities conducted
CPCR programs were initiated to train interns, post graduates, staff Nurses
and paramedical personnel, which will enable them to apply proper resuscitation
methods in practice. CPCR programs were regularly conducted by a team of
Anesthesiologists and Intensivists.
Dr. A. Bhaskaran Professor of Surgery, underwent training course in
providing ‘Basic Surgical Skills’ at Ethicon Institute of Medical Education, Chennai.
Dr. Dinesh.K and Dr. Ravi .M, Professors of Anaesthesiology underwent
training at St john’s Medical Collage, Bangalore under AHA and were certified by
AHA as Providers of BLS & ACLS.
Dr. Thippe swamy, Resident in Emergence medicine underwent training at
“Medical colleagues CPR Institute” Hyderabad and was certified as Instructor for
BLS & ACLS.
So far about 1000 participants have undergone training in CPCR.
The Basic surgical skills include, suturing and knotting techniques various
procedural skills and training on Endotrainers to develop laparoscopic skills.
Undergraduates and postgraduates are trained at regular intervals.
Some of the workshops were conducted on Basic surgical skills in
association with Ethicon Institute of Medical Education, Chennai.
In April 2014, a National level research conference for undergraduates
(DEMEDCON) was organized by SDUAHER. During the pre-conference workshop,
about 60 students have undergone BLS training. After the commencement of new
“State of art” Skill lab with adequate organized space, CPCR programs are being
conducted along with basic surgical skills, orthopedic skills, pediatric resuscitation
skills. During Demedcon- 2015 about 90 students have been trained in BLS and 65
students in basic surgical skills. It was a successful program and excellent
feedback was given by the UG’s students.
FUTURE PLANS
1. To develop advanced clinical Skill lab.
2. To start cadaveric clinical skill lab.
3. To develop simulated Telerobotic skills.
4. To introduce a certificate course for Instructors in simulations and skill laboratory.
