HARMONIZED SALES TAX (HST) IMPACT ON REGISTERED ADULT

PROGRAMS EFFECTIVE MAY 1, 2010In response to the provincial government’s introduction ofa new harmonized sales tax (HST) effective July 1, 2010,Parks and Recreation has made the necessary adjustmentsto applicable program fees beginning with 2010 summerprograms. HST will replace the GST charged previously onregistered programs for 14 years of age and older. Theseprograms include: aquatic advanced lifesaving, aqua fitness, fitness and other adult training programs. Fees forthese summer programs have been published in this guidewith HST included. HST becomes effective July 1, 2010.However, the government has identified May 1 to July 1,2010 as a transitional period to changeover from chargingGST to HST. If you register after May 1, 2010 for an adultsummer program with a start date of July 1, 2010 or later,HST will apply.

All spring adult programs fees are published with GST included only. HST does not apply to spring adult programsas they all end before July 1, 2010.

POETRY SERIES

THE ART & POETRY OF WILLIAM

BLAKE’S SONGS OF INNOCENCE

AND OF EXPERIENCE Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 pmAs beguiling as some of these poems are, they were also a witness to profound social changes in early Industrial England that were occurring at the same time as the tumultuous French Revolution. Without losing any of their simple charm, we will investigate Blake’s probing look into the struggles of the human spirit as well as observe prints of his hand painted etchings of these poems.

T.S. ELIOT’S FIRST QUARTET Wednesday, September 29th, at 7:00 pmWhile some of us may know of Eliot’s fastidious Anglo-Catholicism, his Four Quartets are a distillation of universal spirituality, a map of the human condition in all its despair and hope, thereby being the most concise spiritual handbook of the 20th Century.

POETRY OF E.E. CUMMINGS

Wednesday, October 20, at 7:00 pm If Eliot teaches us to understand life, then Cummings demonstrates to us how to live it. He is a dancing dervish, touching almost spontaneously all aspects of life in a single poem. We will read many and discuss the concept of setting them to music, while listening to the recordings.

REMEMBRANCE DAY War and Poetry: Two Men and Seven Women:Wilfred Owen and R.A.D. Ford and Women,

War, and, Poetry

Thursday, November 11, at 3:00 pmHow do women as diverse as Canada’s Margaret Atwood, Iraqi’s Mazek a la Ma’Ika, Palestine’s Fadwa Tuqan, and others tackle such a subject as war? British Captain Wilfred Owen broke the mold on wartime poetry with his unbearably poignant verses. And what of a little known Canadian poet who was also Canada’s Ambassador to the USSR for 15years? These were Skoggard’s sources for the dramatic oratorio Bayt Lahm and War & Peace. Robert E. Lee said: “It is a good thing that war is so horrible, otherwise we should love it too much.”

Maybe it’s because there are no bench warmer’s in our classes — every child participates in every

activity — no first string, second string, third string. Nobody’s left out. Maybe it’s because they meet

new friends who share a common interest, and become part of the Martial Arts family. It could be that

they are setting goals and working to achieve them, and when they do, they feel great about

themselves. The personal attention our instructors give them, will keep kids interested and engaged

and keeps them having fun.

Parents who have their kids in our classes love seeing their kids learn self-discipline, self-confidence,

respect for others, equality, and how to defend themselves in any situation.
