CQU Auction – WOW! My living room/dining room has turned into a world of many tables for staging our auction items. I am ex-cited about the contributions to date and ap-preciate everyone’s efforts. We have quilts, wall hangings, kits, candles, baskets, pillows, totes, theme fabrics and patterns, and much more! Realizing this is our major fund raiser for a two-year period, I encourage your partici-pation. Share the date with your friends, rela-tives, and coworkers. Take this opportunity to clean up your stash of dusty fabric and quilt tops that will never mature because your taste has simply changed. How about those panels you would like others to have and turn into a master piece for the CQU panel challenge? How about that pattern that you loved so much you purchased it several times! I know I am not the only one… Give me a call and drop off your contributions. Not able to contribute now—bring items for the bake sale—volunteer for the day of the auction—set up, registration, item selection and display, check out, etc. This is going to be a GREAT FUN time! Lessa Porter CQU Auction Committee 703 471 5637, [email protected]

Upcoming Workshops: No Workshop Fee (there may be a kit fee). Sign up at the October meeting or by emailing Jacqueline Lehman at [email protected]

Hex Vex – English Paper Piecing with Barb Vedder, Friday, October 13 @ Sully Govern-ment Center from 10-3. Students will learn how to achieve in-tricate patterns and designs using commercial fabrics. Full Day Workshop $12 Class fee. Quilt Your Own Quilts with Marisela Rumberg, Friday, Oc-tober 27 @ Sully Government Center from 10-3 If you don't want to keep sending your quilt tops to some-one else to quilt them, this workshop is for you. I will teach you all my tips and secrets for you to be able to quilt your own quilts at home in your domestic sewing machine. Learn the difference between Walking Foot Quilting and Free Motion Quilting and never be scared again of ruining your quilt tops. This is a six hour workshop that combines my Walking Foot Quilting class and Free Motion Quilting 1 class.

Quilts - The Story of My Life, Barb Vedder A Powerpoint Presentation followed by a trunk show of quilts representing my 25-year journey in quilt making and design. I present my quilts chron-ologically to show the evolution of my work from commercial patterns to adaptation to original work. I share my inspiration sources and how I have interpreted them in my work in hopes that it will inspire others to tell their own story. February Program: February will be our Round Robin so if you are in-terested in teaching something to your fellow CQU members e-mail or talk to Jacqueline Lehman, [email protected]

For each UFO you complete, your name will got into the drawing for first prize of half the pot, second and third prizes are a quarter of the pot. Please bring your UFO's for "Show and Tell" and let me know what you have completed. Cash or checks made paya-ble to CQU. We have 81 items in the UFO challenge, so far. Fall Retreat - November 10 - 12, 2017 Hilton Garden Inn, Winchester

Only a couple of months until our Fall Re-treat! There are 24 spaces available for this terrific weekend of sewing and fellow-ship. This is a great opportunity for seasoned quilters to get away and have time to enjoy quilting with no distractions; AND, an opportunity for quilting newcom-ers to come, concentrate on your new hob-by, and learn from some great ladies!

Bonnie Wagoner and Vicki Portley are coor-dinating the retreat this year [email protected]; 703/975-5513). Non-refundable deposits of $30 can be brought to the CQU meetings in October and November to get your spot locked in!

Once you have signed up at the CQU meet-ing (or had a friend drop off your deposit for you), be sure to book your room at the Hilton Garden Inn. See flyer included in this newsletter for more information!

Challenges

Thanks to so many who participated in the Calendar Page Summer Challenge. It was fun to see what you decided to make and in some cases, what your friend made for you! That's what CQU is all about. Congrat-ulations to our five gift certificate winners. Our Fall Challenge is to make something with a "panel." I am using the term loosely, as I am includ-ing about anything as a panel. You may have an ac-tual panel (preprinted fabric) or preprinted block(s), Redwork, or some embroidery. Take a look around and see what you would like to "Challenge" yourself with and share your finished item with us at the De-cember meeting. There will be prizes!! Questions, please contact Marianne Stana, [email protected]

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

For those of you who are new to CQU, our chapter has an active Block of the Month (BOM) program. Each month, the Block of the Month Chair selects a block pattern; direc-tions and a photo of the block are included in the newsletter and also made available at the monthly meeting. The Chair constructs the pattern to check the accuracy of the block and makes recommendations with respect to color choice. Members turn in their completed blocks at the next meeting and a drawing is held with the lucky ticket holder winning the blocks.

This year's blocks are varied and utilize dif-fering techniques including, patchwork, ap-plique, paper and string piecing. Consider making two blocks each month, one to do-nate and one using your own color scheme that you can combine into a sampler quilt at the end of the year.

I hope you will choose to become involved in this year's BOM program. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn a new technique and sharpen your piecing skills. Be sure to see the next page of this newsletter for the October BOM. Vicki Portley, [email protected]

Important Library News:

We will be selling the books listed (see the list attached to this newsletter email) for $1 at the upcoming Auction - first come, first served. If you see something you want and don’t want to possibly miss out on it, you can reserve a book by emailing me and paying $2.50 for the book. You can pick up and pay for your reserved book(s) at the auction. So don’t miss a chance to get some great books and help support our chapter’s fundraiser.

Thanks, Maria Spetalnik, [email protected]

This month you will be cutting fabrics. If it seems like a lot of pieces, it’s because you are cutting enough to sew a

certain amount of these units together EACH month beginning in month 3. (or you can sew these units all together at

your own pace/leisure)

From your BACKGROUND fabric: Cut a total of (76) 3 and 3/8” squares. I cut 6 strips of fabric 3 and 3/8” x WOF and

then subcut the strips into 3 and 3/8” squares.

From an assortment of PRINT fabrics: Cut a

total of (152) 3” squares. Cut each square once

on the diagonal to yield a total of 304 half square

triangles.

Set all of these pieces into 6 baggies as follows:

Baggies 1 thru 4 will have 13 background squares and 52 assorted print half square triangles.

Baggies 5 and 6 will have 12 background squares and 48 assorted print half square triangles.
