DENNIS DAY CUTSSESSION IN CANADAToronto: Dennis Day, a long time friend ofJack Markle, who heads up his own recordproduction company, out of Newmarket, wasso impressed with the musical talents avail-able in this country that he decided to try onone of the Canadian recording studios. Hischoice was RCA Victor's Toronto studios.

Out of the session, which was A & R'dby BMI's Whitey Haines, came six sides. Thefirst to be released "I Want To Have A LittleBomb Like You" features Dennis with a

Cockney accent and is a type of spoof onprotest. The flip is "May You. Always" whichis the well known Day theme. Al Harris didthe arranging on the "Bomb" and the musicalback-up was supplied by CBC musicians. The disc is now available on RCA Victor'sCanada International label.

DENNIS DAY

"Little Nick The Laughing Elf" and"Honky The Xmas Goose" as well as "I'llBe Home For Xmas" and "That's What XmasMeans To Me" were also cut at this sessionand are to be released in time for the yearend holiday. "Elf" so impressed The MightyStar Toy Company, out of Montreal, that theyhave created an elf toy and will tie in withthe record release for North America. Thelatter sides are to be released by Columbia.

REPORTSThe Byrds new single is "Have You

Seen Her Face". "Make Me Yours" by BettyeSwan (spelled with a "Y") looks like a chartbound item, but as I write, there is no knowndistributor in Canada. Keep your eye onTommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who wrote TheMonkees' theme, "Last Train To Clarksville",and "I Wanna Be Free". This team has justsigned with A&M Records to record and pro-duce for the hottest company in the USA. TheDoors, who have come close to making a bighit, might just have one in "Light My Fire".How is this for the name of a group? TheLiving Daylights, have just recorded "Let'sLive For Today", which is already the title ofa tune that's in the top 50 (RPM 100) andcould be the same tune. The Grass Rootshave the charted version. "Tracks Of MyTears" is the title of Johnny Rivers newsingle. "Plastic Man" is the new Sonny andCher outing. James Brown does a Gershwinstandard from Porgy and Bess, "I Love YouPorgy" and it's getting the "pick" treatmentso could be a hit.

Mom and Dad will remember "YouMust Have Been A Beautiful Baby" and theDave Clark 5 could roll this one up to the topof the charts. It's really an oldie. What's newwith Peter and Gordon? "The Jokers" is

their new Capitol deck. "Two In The After-noon" is the new side from Dino, Desi andBilly.

"Today's Lament" by Lee Rand is aregional breakout in the Cleveland area andlooks like national action could follow.

R A D OWE GET LETTERS

"Dear Editor: 'The other station won't play itbecause it's on Red Leaf', eh? What's thematter? Doesn't the P.D. or Music Director, orany of the jocks have an interest or percentageof the label or the group? This is ridiculousnonsense from the standpoint of programmingand if 'the other station' actually gives thisreason for not spinning the disc, I shouldthink there would be grounds for defamation. If the 'other station' does have this policy ofbanning Red Leaf, it would appear from here, that perhaps Red Leaf is not doing somethingthe station requires, or that perhaps the labelis, in reality, a 'competitor' to some privateinterest of one of the stations employees, such as another label, record company, orbooking agent. What sensible reason could astation give for banning a certain label? AndI think the question should be answered. Whoare we, as public servants, to say we won'tplay this or that, unless the product is con-sidered inferior or not of the type programmingwe are doing. Maybe 'the other station' con-siders everything on this label inferior. Non-sense! There are good and bad sounds laiddown on all labels. I imagine Capitol andQuality have had some real flops on theirlabels. Just give me one good reason for ban-ning any label. Another thing that bugs me isthe way all you medium and small marketstations follow 'Big Brothers' footsteps. If'Big Brother' picks it, you pick it. If theyplay it, you play it. If they lay it aside, youguys lay it aside too. If they ban a label, youban a label. Come on, fellas, stand up, let'shave some originality. Give these new discsa listen on your own. The hell with what 'BigBrother' does. I also get sick of you recordpeople handing me the line, 'It's number 10 onCRUM in Toronto' . So what the hell, this isKitchener. If 'Big Brother' has personal beefswith the record people and booking agents, let 'em argue it among themselves. But, if

to cut off a certain label, let'sw the leader. By the way, these guys

are always following the leader themselves. They are always trying to hire some of mybest friends from the States, and their boys

"WALT EDWARDS SHOW"FEATURES TEENS ON TAPESaskatoon: One of the main reasonsthe "Walt Edwards Show" is No. 1in ratings with the teens is CFQC'sexclusive "Teen Dedication andRequest" portion of the Edwardsshow. Listeners telephone in theirdedication and request a song thatthey would like to go with their dedi-cation. Their voices are taped andplayed back on the air. Says Walt"It is a proven winner in Saskatoonand exclusive in Saskatchewan to theWalt Edwards Show." It also helpsEdwards compile the "QC Boss 40".

STAFF CHANGES AT 'PTPeterborough: Ian Cook has returnedto CKPT to take over the all nightshow. Ian moves to CKPT from CFRSSimcoe, where he was in charge ofthe morning show. CKPT has droppedtheir "Open Line" program and sta-tion manager Don Percy takes overas the morning housewives host from9 AM to noon. Keven Frillman's shiftis now noon to 4 PM when promotionmanager, Peter Bennet takes over to7:30 PM. Scott Alexander still holdsdown the rock slot from 7:30 PM tomidnight. John Gilbert is the morningman.

CKPT has, this week, gonefive thousand watts.

BELLEVILLE GETS EXCLUSIVEON QUIET JUNGLE DISCBelleville: The Quiet Jungle, one ofthe most popular of the Toronto groupsto play the area, previewed their newYorkville disc "Too Much In Love",for a capacity audience at Belleville'sfamous Tiki Club. Says Dave Charles,"Voice Of The Quinte Teens",(CJBQ), "It sounds like a winner".Page 4 RPM Music Weekly

are always making Stateside visits to get newprogramming and promotion ideas. There arescores of these stations in the States, and our'Big Brother' in Toronto,Canada is just another American top 40 Format station with verylittle originality. It also seems that 'BigBrother' does very little for any Canadian re-cording group outside of Toronto. From here,it seems that there are two kinds of talentthis side, of the border, Toronto talent andCanadian talent. It appears that T.O. has itsown thing going and their own radio outlet topromote it. Perhaps Red Leaf and the Modbeatsare not a part of all this. Where was 'BigBrother' when Canada's top recording of 1966was being aired? Remember, the group is notfrom Toronto, they're from Ottawa. They'recalled the Staccatos. Seems funny that'Canada's Number One Station' didn't chart'Canada's Number One Record'. Seems funny, too that they jumped right on top of the boysfollow-up, 'Half Past Midnight'. Perhaps theStaccatos were not 'in' either. Don't you thinkwe should all applaud 'Big Brother' for sup-porting the Staccatos current disc? They didsuch a damned good job on the other one,'Let's Run Away'.

While we're writing about the T.O.music scene, what's this I hear about a book-ing agent being on the Board that recently re-voked the license of another booking agent?Another conflict of interest, maybe? Eh? Justa little?

Back to the Modbeats and Red Leaf.At least 3000 albums have been sold, thesingle has been a monster in most marketsoutside Toronto. The group has packed kidsin at appearances like no Toronto group, allover the Province, and 'Big Brother', if youcan ignore all this simply because it's onRed Leaf, you're pretty damned narrow-minded.Another reason why all you medium and smallmarket people should not follow the 'leader'.In my mind, they're not a 'leader'.P.S. The views expressed here are not neces-sarily the views of my employer!'

Listen, I missed Volume 1 of"Sounds Great" `cuz I didn'thave enough plastic milk jugs, but I made sure I had enough forthis one. If you cash in elevenjugs, you get enough bread witha little change left over for gas,if you're lugging a Honda, to buyone of these great albums. TheSeekers are here with "A worldOf Our Own" and "I'll NeverFind Another You". Peter andGordon have "World WithoutLove" and "Nobody I Know".Georgie Fame does three numbersand Manfred Mann's here for acouple along with David andJonathan. Sounds great? That'sthe title of the album.CAPITOL - T 6211

You got a favou'rite gal singer?Well, if you haven't, try NancyWilson on for listening size. Oh,what she does with "Alfie", and"If He Walked Into My Life" isjust out of sight. When Nancydoes "Born Free" you'll findyourself starting it all over again`cuz 2 minutes and 4 secondsjust isn't enough, the way Nancydoes it. There's so much greatNancy Wilson here it's hard topick the best. Nancy gives youeverything and not quite the wayyou've heard it before. Her wayis better. Each selection is anadventure. This is Nancy, natur-ally, no silly that's her last al-bum.CAPITOL - T 2712

A mass of teenagers (2167 tothe exact) came to see The Mandalaon the opening night of their return tpCalifornia.

At the door, ticket holderswere presented with The Mandela'snew "Soul Crusade" buttons, a pic-ture of the group and bumper stickersbearing the group's symbol.

George °Hitler being held back from thescreaming Hullabaloo Club audience.(Photos: Courtesy of Out -West Enterprises)

It was showtime at the Hulla-baloo Club on Sunset Blvd. One by

one, the members of The Mandalawere introduced to the screamingaudience. George 011iver reached in-to his bag of tricks, singing "HoldOn I'm Coming" and "Knock OnWood". Next, 011iver sang a lovesong to a girl he picked from theaudience. When it was over he kissedher and what a kiss it was. I wouldthink a lot of girls come just for thechance of being selected for thisnumber. The group ended their firstset with their new record "Give AndTake" which has been receiving alot of exposure on the radio stationsin the past week.

"And back again for thesecond time this evening", roaredthe announcer, "the mighty Mandela".They opened their last set with theflip side of their new release, "FromToronto -1967", a long instrumentallasting more than five minutes.

It was time for the "SoulCrusade. Don Triano, the group'sleader, told the "Sunset Hippies"that LSD, pot and marijuana wasevil and that they could accomplisha similar exhilatory feeling by parti-cipating with them in a spiritualceremony. George 011iver began his"Five Steps To Soul" and thescreaming teenagers bombarded thestage to partake. 011iver went intothe crowd yelling "Come to me, letme touch your hand, show me yoursoul". The sweat -stained blonde(011iver) got so emotional that hefainted into the audience. It tookfour bodyguards to rescue him in a"tug of war" with the mob.

Thus ended the first night ofThe Mandala's "Soul Crusade".

POLISH FANS RIOTDURING STONES VISIT

The Rolling Stones have just com-pleted a roaring Continental tourwhich was highlighted by a riot riddenvisit to Warsaw, Poland, the first forthe Stones to any East Europeancountry. The Polish visit featuredtwo sell-out concerts in the 2700seat Palace of Culture. Outside theRussian -built and financed arena, more than 8000 fans who didn't havea chance to obtain tickets, rioted andshrieked their disappointment. PolishGendarmes brought truncheons andtear gas into play when the crowdstormed the auditorium, during thefirst performance. The police wereready for the second show with twoheavy duty water cannon, but thecrowd went mad again and steel hel-meted troops complete with sub -mach-ine guns and police dogs were rushedinto action as the crowd waded throughthe tear gas, lobbing bottles andstones at the police and troops.

Earlier, The Stones went through a bad experience at Le Bour-get Airport in Paris following a per-formance at the Olympia Theatre. Acustoms official, who was obviouslynot a fan of The Stones, punchedMick Jagger in the chest and threw apunch at Keith Richard. He was ap-parently incensed when all five ofThe Stones passports were handedto him at once.

It's expected that The Stoneswill have a single record release bymid -June.
