AAPPL TEST- SEAL OF BILITERACY Information

The AAPPL test has been approved by CCPS for use as an assessment option to earn the MD Seal of Biliteracy

at graduation. The AAPPL test is given by computer and consists of four sections: Interpersonal

Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening. The test is

offered in many languages including: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish

and ESL. They also recently added assessments in Hindi, Italian, Japanese, and Thai. The four components of

the test take a total of approximately two hours. The AAPPL assesses the ability of a candidate to engage in

linguistic tasks on topics of personal, social, and academic relevance across the three modes of communication.

Each task, such as writing an email message, video-chatting in the target language, or making selections from

something heard or read, takes place in the context of the language classroom. Students who earn a minimum

rating of Intermediate High (or I-5) on all four sections of the assessment will be eligible for the Seal of

Biliteracy. Score reports should be available within two weeks of the testing date and will be sent to each

student at his or her school.

We will be offering the AAPPL test on two separate test dates for the 19-20 school year.

The first will be on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Westminster High School at 7:30am, in the

Media Center.

The second date will be on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Westminster High School at 7:30am, in the

Media Center.

The cost of the test is $20 per student and must be paid in cash or by a check made out to the

student’s home school, with AAPPL testing in the memo section.

The deadline for students to register for December AAPPL testing is Friday, November 15, 2019.

Please turn in the completed registration form and payment to your World Languages/ESOL

teacher or department chair by the end of the day on 11/15/19.

The deadline for students to register for May AAPPL testing is Friday, April 3, 2020.

Weather-Related School Closings

We wish to remind parents that we use School Messenger as one of our notification systems when we experience inclement weather and there is a change to the normal school day. Parents will receive an email message and a phone call to the Primary Number. We also encourage parent/student to look for announcements on our home page of our web site at www.carrollk12.org, CETV Channel 21 on Comcast Cable, and local and regional radio and television stations – WTTR (1470 Radio), WCBM (680 AM Radio), WBAL (1090 AM Radio), WMAR-TV (Channel 2-TV).

Cancellation of Extracurricular Activities Due to Inclement Weather

All practices, games and extracurricular activities are

CANCELLED when schools dismiss early due to

a weather-related emergency. Please do NOT call the school. We need to keep our lines open for emergency communications. If you do not want your student driving home if school closes early due to bad weather, please tell him/her ahead of time to ride the bus home or expect someone to pick them up. Having an emergency plan in place with your students prior to an unexpected closing will help to limit incoming and outgoing phone calls. We appreciate your cooperation

Rho Kappa Collecting items for Blue Ribbon Project Rho Kappa is supporting the Blue Ribbon Project in their “Backpacks for Love” drive. The Blue Ribbon Project provides backpacks of necessities to children who have been placed in foster care for the first time. Collections will take place during November and what is really needed now are combs and brushes (especially for infants/toddlers) and elastic waist pants and shorts (both genders – infants to middle school age). Donations can be placed in Mrs. Dorwart’s room, A220.

Veteran’s Day The Century High School Veteran’s Day Assembly will be on Thursday, November 7. Breakfast for Veterans and Guests will be from 8:00-9:00am followed by the assembly, which will go from 9:00 to 10:30. After the assembly, veterans are encouraged to showcase their artifacts and share their experiences from 10:30-1:00 pm in the auxiliary gym. If any veterans or active military would like to attend, please e-mail Henry Butler at [email protected]. Please respond by Thursday, October 31.

Acceptable Dancing Agreement for Students and Guests at School-sponsored Dances

2019-2020

An important part of the Century High School mission is to prepare students for the future by fostering the growth of social skills. An important social skill is the ability to behave with respect and responsibility in social settings. As we approach upcoming social events sponsored by the school, we feel that it is necessary to address potential student behavior that might fail to meet these standards of respect and responsibility. In this agreement, we are specifically referring to the type of dancing that is displayed at school dances. Sexually suggestive dancing is not a reflection of the behavior we accept from Century High School students, does not reflect community standards and is certainly not acceptable at school-sponsored dances. This agreement is intended to convey to students and their parents that the school administration and staff will neither accept nor tolerate dancing of this type. Individual students and guests engaging in sexually suggestive dancing will receive one warning. If they continue this type of dancing, their parents will be contacted and the student and their guest will be required to leave the dance for the remainder of the evening forfeiting ticket admission costs. In addition, the student’s eligibility to attend future dances may be jeopardized. Further, if this style of dancing is pervasive in the opinion of the Administrator in charge, the dance may be halted and students sent home without refund of the costs of admission. We encourage parents to discuss what is acceptable behavior at formal events such as the Homecoming Dance and the Junior/Senior Prom. It is our hope that the style of dancing by all in attendance will be appropriate so everyone will be able to enjoy school dances. In order to purchase a dance ticket, a student must have this signed agreement on file. Once the agreement is on file, the student will be eligible to purchase a ticket for any school dance for the remainder of the school year. Guests of Century High School students do not have to submit this agreement, however Century High School students who invite guests are responsible for ensuring that their guests also comply with this agreement. A Guest Pass is still required for those guests who are students of another high school.

Welcome to the Cafeteria!

2019-2020 School Year Welcome Back! We’re glad that you are here! Please be sure to join us every day for a delicious, healthy breakfast and lunch. We have been busy making your school cafeteria hi-tech and better than ever. Here are some things that we think you need to know to enhance your cafeteria experience.

Did you know that your child has a cafeteria account? Every student who goes through our cafeteria line will

use a unique, Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access their account. Parents have the option to add any

denomination to the account for the purchase of meals and snack items. It is a convenient way to ensure that

money is not lost or forgotten during that hectic morning rush!

Ok, so what is the PIN? Each student has been issued a unique, 5 digit PIN number. Please help them

remember this number! It makes the line move faster and ensures that everyone has plenty of time to enjoy

their meal. If they do happen to forget the number, the cashier will be able to find it for them.

How do I put money on the account? It’s easy!

Visit www.myschoolbucks.com to add any value to the account with a credit card. (There is a small service

provider fee for the transaction.) You’ll need your child’s PIN number to complete the simple registration

process. Please note: online payments require 24 hours to process before your child can access the

money.

You can still send in a check to your school’s cafeteria. The cafeteria manager will add it to the

account.

The money added to the account can be used to purchase meals AND snack items.

And of course…we will still accept cash! Cash transactions will also require your student to enter their

PIN number.

Can I monitor what my child is purchasing? Sure! Visit www.myschoolbucks.com and set up a FREE account. Once

you complete the simple registration process (you’ll need your child’s PIN to get started) you can set up low

balance alerts and monitor what they are purchasing.

You can forget about use it or lose it! Any money that is left on your child’s account will carry over from year to

year.
