In the last twenty six years Habitat for Humanity India has con-structed over 33,000 houses for the less fortunate in society. The slogan of Habitat for Humanity India reads – Building Homes, Transforming Communities and Changing Lives. Building homes is a tangible and concrete reality, the benefit of which can be seen by all. But alongside this, Habitat is engaged in transforming communities and changing lives. Besides building homes, Habitat would like to be involved in livelihood, water and sanitation, disas-ter mitigation and preparedness and in the promotion of improv-ing the overall quality of people’s lives.

Habitat alone in no way is going to meet the challenge. There is a need to collaborate and network with likeminded organizations and government machineries to address the challenge .In the com-ing years Habitat will seek greater level of engagement with cross sections of service networks, corporates and government agencies to make a difference in the lives of the poor in building affordable homes, in transforming communities and in changing lives.

Hope for a brighter future

Savita, 35 years of age, lives with her paralytic husband and 2 children in Malgaon village, Dist. Sangli, Maharashtra State. Before her husband’s paralytic attack the couple worked as laborers in the vineyards near their village. For the past two years Savita is the only bread winner in the family. Her elder son, Vinay-ak who was studying in 9th grade had to drop out of school recently, to supplement his mother’s meager income to meet the medical expenses of his father.

Their house was a ram shackled structure made of dry grass and covered with tarpaulin sheets to protect them from the rains.

In the year gone by, Savita joined the SHG group in the village, through which she was extended a loan to purchase a few goats, which helps her supplement her income.

The increase in household income gave Savita the courage to embark on building a permanent home for herself and her family and today she is well on her way to being the proud owner of a house being sup-ported and built by Habitat. She believes her new home will bring happiness and prosperity to the family.

She says, “I do not know how it feels in heaven but I’m sure having a permanent house which you can say is yours is just the same feeling as being in heaven”. The attached bathroom and toilet facility will also help her to provide better care to her husband.
